Knitted Outer Pouches:- Material: 8 ply or DK wool (they are unable to use pouches made from synthetic materials as the joeys cannot breathe in closed synthetic pouches). Fabric Outer Pouches:- Cotton, flannelette, polar fleece, wool, jersey, sweatshirt material, etc. Poly blends and synthetics are OK. French seams are not needed for outer pouches. All Inner Pouches:- 100% natural fibre only (cotton, bamboo, linen, silk). Flannelette or plain cotton are great as well as stretchy t-shirt cotton. Fabric should be very soft (what you would give to a baby). French seams are a must for all joey pouch liners. The lining should not be attached to the pouch as it will need to be changed regularly. Onward shipping has been arranged to the ARCG and her family will also deliver to local hubs for distribution across Australia. You can drop your items at any of the following collection points, IOW Zoo, Sandown; Lanesend Primary School, Cowes; Vic Tavern, East Cowes; Dog Grooming Centre and Monkey Haven, Newport; 4c Oakvale, Oakfield, Ryde; Tapnell Park Farm, West Wight. 2

Welcome to the February issue which arrives with a big sigh of relief that we made it through January; the month that goes on and on and on, which wasn’t helped with all the rain and wind that we’ve experienced recently. On a positive note you will notice that the evenings are slowly getting lighter which means that Spring will be with us shortly. This months issue is packed with news, information, features and much more. Our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 8, 9 and 10 will keep you busy with events happening across the Island. This month also sees Valentines Day on the 14th February and near the end of the month on the 25th is pancake day. We have some great local businesses advertising with us and please do support them by using their services and remember to tell them you saw them advertised here. I hope you all have a great February and I look forward to catching up with you again next month.

News Report from Ryde Town Councillor Karen Lucioni Email: karen.rydesouth@mail.com | Mobile 07506930109 Welcome to February, whilst you are used to me getting out and about getting involved with community projects, the other part to my role as a councillor is to represent you at Ryde Town Council. I am heavily involved with making sure your money is spent correctly and gets great value for money. I am always turning to you to get your views and try at every opportunity to make sure your voice is heard when it counts. This month Ryde Town Council sets its budget for the coming 2020/21 year, this means the precept for your council tax is determined. I have been on the finance committee this year so have been evaluating how we have been doing and the feelings from residents. I will not be supporting any raise to the precept. I know a lot of us struggle with everything going up all the time. I’m honoured to be the chair for the Facilities and Assets Management Committee and will work hard with the committee members to make sure we get greater oversight of our services/assets and value for money for them. I am part of the Planning Committee, committed to our conservation area making sure we keep the heritage of our wonderful town which has been put on the at-risk register with Heritage England whilst moving forward making the sure the expansion of Ryde recognises our cultural identity, environment and views of its residents. I am working with a small marketing working part, at present we are focusing on the way our town is portrayed, we

have commissioned new “Visit Ryde” posters that are being worked on to promote Ryde in the best way. We will also explore the various other projects that we use to promote our town not only as a gateway but more importantly a destination. I am still chasing for the extra CCTV for Ryde and we have again recommenced talks with Island Roads, and I remain committed in delivering these if possible. Thank you to Ryde Clerks for all their work on this so far. They are a real asset to our town as is the officer team I am looking for residents that have a view on our town and crime to come along to the World Café I am helping to put on and have their say. I am hoping that people who do not get involved or feel their voice is not normally heard will attend. I would welcome you to join me and offer support to anyone wanting to attend that may need a little extra support to do so. More details will be out soon however if you want to know more details; our hope for the project include • For Ryde to be a better community • Reduce ASB • Better Partnership working • Create a safer community • Build a more positive perception of the police • Create better connections between partners • Getting tenants to contribute to the community

Bereavement is the period of grief and mourning after a death. Grief is as unique as you are, and as individual as a fingerprint. Each person will be affected in his or her own way because everyone is different – even in the same family. Butterflies Bereavement Support is a community-based bereavement charity and was set up 3 years ago to meet the growing demand of supporting the emotional and physical needs of those aged 16 plus who have experienced the loss of a loved one or a friend through death. Butterflies is inclusive, everyone is welcome. They are not a religious organisation or connected to any other charity. They are here for bereaved families and individuals who need care and support following the passing of someone special in their lives. Butterflies Bereavement Support is made up of volunteers who have experienced their own loss, and each of them have received varying levels of training and continue to be trained in all aspects of bereavement. It is the invaluable support of a growing team of dedicated people locally who are giving their own time, skills and talents to be there to listen, counsel and support throughout the year. They offer accessible Counselling Sessions, drop in and chats, evening bereavement support groups, bereavement cafe’s, Suicide Prevention and Support, Dementia and Bereavement Support, Pre-Bereavement Support and activities to alleviate loneliness. Bereaved people, even those who have witnessed the peaceful death of a loved one, often need to tell their story repeatedly, and at that important part of transferring the experience they endured into a memory, instead of reliving it like a parallel reality every time they think about it – they are here to encourage open discussion with all people. Butterflies is transforming the lives of many – and many more will be transformed in the future. Butterflies Bereavement Support are looking for volunteers to become Bereavement Buddies. Their bereavement buddies have the chance to become trained listeners and achieve Level 2 counselling skills and then further development and training opportunities. They also are looking for welcomer’s, team leaders and people who can help with admin and fundraising. If you or indeed you know of someone who would benefit from support call them on 07889009393 or 01983 619503. If you are interested in volunteering email Paul at info@butterfliesbereavement.co.uk or for more information about Butterflies Bereavement Support visit their website www.butterfliesbereavement.com 11

News Report from Wootton Bridge Councillor Barry Abraham 07800736557 | Email:- barry.abraham@iow.gov.uk The old saying “As the days lengthen as the cold strengthens” seems not to be true this year, rain seems to be replacing the cold and has been keeping the gully suckers busy making sure as practically as possible that the drains and ditches are kept clear to keep the surface water off the roads and keeping the gritting lorries and grit in the garages and store. I know sometimes the council receives criticism for not appearing to be thinking ahead but as fickle as the weather can be, the council through its contractor has to be ready for any weather conditions. I have recently become a victim of IT failure. I have to say that I am not the most tech savvy person but to be able to access council emails, agendas etc. I have a council IPAD. Sadly when I had to change my password, unfortunately I could not remember my chosen one and my IPAD locked its self and no matter how much I swore at it, it would not open up, fortunately the council has a very good IT section but the people that work on Apple IPADs were on holiday or off with sickness which meant that I had nearly two weeks without access to my emails. Thankfully the tech guys sorted out my IPAD within a few hours. The lesson I learned was not to forget my password! When I opened my emails, it had accumulated over 360 unread emails, most were offering places at various conferences and seminars, there does seem to be a lucrative business offering councillors and officers two or three days away at conferences around the country at £300 or £400 plus hotel and expenses for limited benefit, but that’s only my opinion. The ones that did concern me 12

are the ward residents that emailed me, who had not had a reply. I have now got on top of them and I apologise if you were one of the residents who did not get a quick response. How I long for the days when I first took up public office when snail mail reigned supreme and I was not bombarded by junk mail. I think I have only had two letters from residents in the last three years, how times have changed! The council has just launched a housing needs survey for Islanders to try and find what housing is likely to be needed for younger people who have grown up on the Island and at present might still be living with parents and unable to move into their own property. At present there are over 2000 people on the council’s waiting list for properties to meet their need. The council also want to hear from older Island residents who might want to move to smaller properties and cannot find anything that meets their own needs. This will then be used to build a picture of what will be needed for residents in terms of housing in the next few years. There is nothing to report on planning at present, only small applications are being made around the village. Because of the very wet weather some planned road works have been set back. I have been in contact with Island Roads on issues that residents have raised with me and hopefully will feed back on them next time. Please do not forget if you have an issue with the council, please give me a telephone call or email.

Café Bridge Coming Soon The Isle of Wight will soon be playing host to its very first Café Bridge, and organiser Philip Watson is excited to be bringing this event to Yarmouth. The invitation is open to all standards of bridge players and he hopes players from across the Island will support the event and help raise some much needed funds for The Mountbatten Hospice. What is Café Bridge? This daytime event involves playing bridge with pre-dealt hands in Yarmouth’s finest licensed establishments. Walk to the next pub with your partner after each round, guided by a roadbook and map given to you at registration. Soup and sandwiches are provided wherever you land up at lunchtime.

Café Bridge started in Holland, and is now widespread in the UK. It combines playing bridge in social surroundings with walking around a pleasant British town – all while raising money for a good cause and giving bridge some needed publicity. On 26th March, island residents will have the chance to join visitors from Hampshire, Surrey and Dorset at Yarmouth’s inaugural Café Bridge day. Pre-booking is required – use the link on the main advert, or call Philip on 07712 018645 with inquiries. The organisers look forward to welcoming you in March.
