Welcome and thank you for picking up a copy of the February issue of Island Magazines. We are slowly working our way into the new year and Spring is finally getting closer. I have already seen a cluster of crocus bulbs pushing through the surface looking for the sun. Let’s hope they don’t have too long to wait. Have you noticed that as soon as the shelves were cleared of Christmas goodies they were soon replaced with Easter Eggs. Is this good or bad? I’m not sure where I stand on this as on the one hand I think everything is getting too commercialised and happening much earlier then is necessary but on the other hand who doesn’t like chocolate and to be honest I am a creme egg lover and I don’t believe they should be just for Easter... they taste so much better in February!!!! This months issue as usual is packed with news and information from local councillors. We have a great selection of advertiser offering a variety of services and don’t forget Shrove Tuesday is on the 13th February and I look forward to joining many others across the Island in Garden perfecting the perfect pancake flip.

News Report from Wootton Bridge Town and County Councillor Barry Abraham | Email:- barry.abraham@iow.gov.uk
In February all council meetings are concerned with is setting the budget. Indeed since the autumn all stones have been turned and looked for any spare pockets of monies. One thing is clear, it is becoming all but impossible to make savings without impacting on services but we are doing what we can to lessen the impact on the most vulnerable but as we move to the budget meeting, a legal budget will be set and this will mean a rise in the council tax.
I have had a letter from the car parks department of the council regarding Brannon Way car park, apparently some of the accesses from the High Street properties have not been authorised and health and safety issues have been raised. The council now intend to licence these accesses and make them comply with current legislation. Sadly it sounds bureaucratic but the council has a duty of care to car park users.
On Wootton Recreation ground an application has been made to place a communication mast on one of the flood lights which will increase its height. I have had conversation with residents who have told me their views, some for and some against. As landowners, the council will get a payment for wayleave if planning is granted. I have had talks with officers where this might be spent and it would most likely be ring fenced to be spent on the recreation ground.
On the news at the moment is what the government intends to do to reduce the use of packaging particularly plastic. Anyone who watched Blue Planet recently cannot have been moved by the impact on the seas around the world and animals that are caught up in our rubbish, it never ceases to amaze me how quick we can throw away unwanted wrappings. A walk along the Creek will show what I mean. I am constantly clearing plastic from the farm hedges and the banks of the Mill Pond.
I have no news yet on the planning application at the end of Palmers Road but the application for twelve holiday units at Woodside has raised interest. This is an extension to the Woodside retreat that takes the development outside of its recognised boundary and will start to impact on the look of Woodside. The old Plane Tree on the bridge looks to have received a stay of execution, a second report does not think the tree is anything like as bad as first reported, but I hope to be able to update further in my March report. 4
Taking of the farm, we use massive amounts of plastic wrapping and I just wish there was an easy way to get it recycled. Perhaps when I buy it there should be a recycling charge and an obligation on the suppliers to collect and recycle the used materials. New Road has now been surveyed for the resurfacing, as I have explained before there will be three parts to the process of upgrading it to a good highways standard. Firstly the drainage will be upgraded, continued over the page

followed by the pavements and lastly the road surface. Hopefully afterwards we will have a road that will be fit for purpose for several years. As we approach February, evenings are getting lighter, snowdrops begin to show along with daffodils and in the hedgerows Cuckoo Pint or Lords and Ladies (if you prefer) start to show their leaves, things are not so bad after all!
Show your carpets, rugs and upholstery how much they mean to you this Valentine’s Day by treating them to a deep clean and bringing the sparkle back in your life. Call now on 01983 295518 We give a money back guarantee. We apply a protector to carpets FREE of charge.

Caught on Camera! This month I have been very fortunate to come across the photography work of Darren Harris who has kindly allowed us to use his exquisite kingfisher photo on the front cover. Like many, Darren is a wildlife enthusiast and his passion is birds of prey and kingfishers. After watching kestrels and photographing them on his phone he decided it was time to invest in a suitable camera to enable him to take his photography to the next level. In doing this, Darren has become accustomed to observing and learning the habits of the vast range of wildlife we have on the Island. The front cover picture was taken as Hersey Nature Reserve in Seaview and Darren is a regular visitor at the reserve and can sit for hours and will often see a flash of blue or orange dart by. By hiding, waiting, observing and keeping still for long enough, whilst ensuring his finger was poised on the shutter button paid off and Darren was able to catch the kingfisher in all its glory whilst it took a well earned rest before flying off again. The details of this truly magnificent bird are clearly shown in the picture and I wonder if he knew he was being watched and decided to play along so Darren could get the perfect shot!! Whatever the reason I think everyone will agree that this picture is just perfect and thank you to Darren for allowing us to share it.

News Report from - Cllr Wayne Whittle, Hunters Way, Binstead Hill, Ryde. Email wayne.whittle@iow.gov.uk Tel 07792 670771 Twitter @RydeAbide It is now hoped that the Environment Agency Flood prevention engineering Works will start on the Harbour Beach early 2018 rather than at the end of the summer. The Flood Group had stressed their view to the EA at the last meeting, “sooner the better” for the outfall diversion into the Harbour. The EA agreed that a pre-summer start would provide a longer window of opportunity than the restricted 50 days if works were to start in September, as the engineers would have to stop works and leave the beach after the 50 days to make way for the migrating birds if works were not completed by late October. I attended a demonstration of the temporary flood barriers in Simeon Street recreation ground during December and was also advised that the permanent wall would now be erected on the West side of the footpath rather than following the Garden fences, this work will not start until after the beach works have been completed. Erecting the permanent flood wall further inside the Rec will prevent the removal of boundary trees and enable water to escape Westwards from homes and gardens on West Hill Road. Sadly the shelter at the bottom of Dover Street had to be fenced off over Christmas due to long running nightly antisocial behaviour and vandalism to surrounding properties and shelter itself. I’ve previously met with the Police and community safety team who tell me they are directing extra resource to deal with the ongoing problems.
I’m pleased to hear there are now two live Web Cams in Ryde that can be viewed 24/7 from anywhere in the world sponsored by Ryde Town Council, just google iwccti.co.uk and take a look. One is constantly panning the Solent from the top of All Saints Church, called “Solent Cam” the other is panning Appley Beach, called “Beach Cam”. If you go on the website you can also view the Havenstreet Steam Railway on “Railway Cam”. A big thank you to “Isle of Wight Webcams” you’ve created a great invite for tourists and handy way for locals finding out if the tide is in or out before leaving home. The next Ryde Regeneration Workshop took place at the end of January and the three key issues focused on in more depth, as identified by attendees at the first workshop were:• Large empty buildings – current status (ownership, plans), ideas for use, funding sources, who/how to take forward • Greening Ryde – more green space, better use /care of what’s there • Youth opportunities - Current provision, demand, options/ideas, funding sources, who/how/when I hope to give you an update on the workshop in the next issue. Best regards Wayne

Songs From My Heart by Sara Kouvaritakis
Sara Kouvaritakis was born on the Isle of Wight, and during her childhood she and her siblings enjoyed a lot of freedom. They spent many happy days playing on the beach, swimming in the sea or fishing from a little boat. In this way the sea became a part of her identity, and the movements of the waves and shifting sand have had a profound effect on her work as a musician, painter and poet. Sara studied the clarinet at the Birmingham School of Music, and she has had a lifetime affair with painting. She now lives back on the Isle of Wight.

It used to serve as a lighthouse, but now it is wartime and the lantern no longer burns.
