Happy New Year to all our readers, advertisers and contributors. I’m looking forward to the year ahead and to continue publishing your local community magazine which is now coming into its 9th year. In this issue we have some great advice and nifty tips on how to keep your home warm for winter. Go to page 13 for more details and if you have any tips which aren’t featured feel free to send them in so they can be shared with other readers. You can find details of events happening across the island by going to our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on page 10. If you have an event happening in February please email the details to islandmagazines@gmail.com and they will be included in the next issue. At the time of writing this the weather has turned a little bit chilly but like many I don’t mind the cold as long as it’s dry and not raining. Its a good chance for us to all wear the hat, scarf and gloves we got for Christmas! I hope you all have a great January and I look forward to catching up with you next month.

News Report from - Cllr Wayne Whittle. Tel 07792 670771 Twitter @RydeAbide E wayne.whittle@iow.gov.uk

Since the culvert has been blocked at the beach end to stop seaweed washing up during the final stages of the diversion it has caused flooding to gardens and Simeon recreation ground on the East side and outside of the flood wall. Pumps have been installed to pump the water trapped outside the flood wall to inside the tanked area in the recreation ground. This whole situation was impacted further by the week of heavy rain at the beginning of December and caused the flooding of the gardens in homes at the bottom of West Hill Road to rise significantly before permanent pumps were installed. This scenario was raised several times at our local Flood group meetings by residents who wondered how water would get away from properties outside the tanked part of Simeon Recreation Ground. Thankfully Ian Miller from the Environment Agency was quickly notified and was on the case and has assured the affected residents that a permanent solution will now be engineered into the project and has assured all that the main cause of the impact was caused by the culvert being blocked. I was relieved to see enough sensible Ryde Town Council members join me in voting against the proposals put forward by the Mayor, the committee chairman and the vice chairman who once again requested new ipad’s for all Councillors. THEATRE COMPANY They lost the vote and now resources can hopefully be put to better more community focused use in the New Year.

We’ve always strived to provide the very best care to all our clients and are looking forward to the new year to continue expanding our innovative services. Last year, we were the first island vets to offer laser therapy and a full endoscopy service allowing us to perform key hole surgery. We upgraded our waiting room, including our new bespoke cat lounge and opened our retail shop offering pet toys, leads and collars, natural healthy treats and essential accessories. Our laser therapy is a ground breaking new treatment that stimulates the body’s own healing systems to treat a wide range of conditions including arthritis, joint stiffness and promote faster wound healing - it’s fast and pain free. Results have been tremendous with many dogs being able to walk and exercise happily without relying solely on painkillers and it’s usually covered by pet insurance too. This year we’re continuing to expand our range of services. Our new pet nutrition clinic can offer advice on diet, especially if they’ve put on a few pounds over Christmas! We continue to develop our state of the art diagnostic facilities, expand the surgery and will be welcoming some new faces soon too. For more information, you can telephone us on: 01983 212999, visit our website at: www.mobilevetsurgery.co.uk and follow us on Facebook for the latest news. 7

News Report from Councillor Charles Chapman for Ryde South Email:- Charles.Chapman@iow.gov.uk | Mobile number 07970 009608 A new year, new resolutions, new hopes, new problems and many old ones continuing. It’s how we deal with all this that gives us hope for the future.

As promised I have been to Sovereign Housing and will extend the promised update. The Arc, (play area and sitting area for locals and visitors ) looks amazing. I must add that all the various groups have ‘pulled out the stops’ with a special thanks to Dempsey, for not only what they have done, but the obvious pride taken in design and finish of the work. Parents can now watch their children play in safe fenced off area, with finished and painted areas. It’s a pleasure to visit. The wood walk is coming on a treat, with clear paths, access to the stream and identification boards, which can be used by all; but especially our school children with whom it is intended to encourage and extend their wildlife knowledge and interest. I am so pleased with the outcome and the cooperation that I have had from Sovereign Housing. We are still hot on the vandalism which, I am sorry to say, is being mainly caused by young people. These can now be easily identified on the super duper CCTV. I don’t intend to get maudlin, but personally, as a council and a country I believe that we face a difficult and changing future, perhaps we need to re-think of new ways we can tackle these in 2019 and beyond. We all know of our problems, the trick is thinking ‘outside of the box’ to solve them. We need to enact a strategy which is both innovative and dynamic. We need to stop entrenching and look to be braver to use our resources, both financial and personal, to invest in the future. As an island we rely on tourism! It’s one of

our main money earners, yet we spend very little of our precious funding, from you, our residents in investing in its future. It’s like not saving for your old age! Increasing the number of visitors and providing an infrastructure which is both innovative and dynamic is vital. This is our job as a council, making sure that we all work together, that we have a clear plan that rivals and improves on both other equally interesting locations. It’s essential that we coordinate all our topnotch entertainments, visitor centres, hotels B & B’s and aid those that are not so good. We need to invest in modern entertainment facilities for visitors and locals and which will then provide future employment for our young, interests for our older people and promote us as a forward looking venue for visitors. We can borrow and invest, regenerate run down areas, improve both our attitude to tourism and jobs. Injecting money into such projects will ensure that we have a future. To keep ‘cutting’ and ‘selling’ will not provide us with either a future or a ‘pension’ i.e. investing into such locations as Ryde Harbour, Ryde Skating Ring and many others. I have been involved in working for the council since 1986. Privileged to work with Lord Steve Ross, and many others who have all looked to developing a dynamic and prosperous place to live. We need to re-set our values, set aside our differences and all work together to ensure a resilient and bright future. A Happy and prosperous New Year to us all.

News Report from Wootton Bridge Councillor Barry Abraham 07800736557 | Email:- barry.abraham@iow.gov.uk As I write my January report I have been around the village and all the Christmas lights are festooning houses and looking very festive. On the council front things do slow down for the Christmas period but a few are still ongoing. The consultation on the local development plan review started on the 30th November 2018 and it has been decided to extend the consultation period by four weeks until midday on Monday 25th February 2019. This is an important document, the local development plan will shape how the Island will develop over the next few years, so do take part and have your say. I am again getting reports of parents causing problems when dropping off their children at the school, by parking outside the gates. This is causing congestion and is a danger to other children. Please think about where you park. I am talking to council officers to see what measures can be put in place to address this serious issue. Wootton Bridge parish council is considering making a bid to Sport England to install a track around the recreation ground, this would include upgrading the existing path. It would be hoped to also have new public toilets included in the application. The idea is to try and improve health and fitness in the area and also help to create a safe route to school from the recreation car park. Wasps are not everyone’s favourite insects but I am a bit of a supporter of the little things. They are one of nature’s good guys 12

as far as I am concerned as they kill off many garden pests. I raise this because twice in the last month, we have had Queen Wasps come out of the wood basket and buzz around the lights in the lounge. I have managed to catch them (without getting stung) and relocate them to a cooler place in a farm building where hopefully they will stay until spring. My ‘Moan of the Month’ has to be again the amount of rubbish laying around some of the roads, discarded by motorists. The Isle of Wight Council can only do so much to keep the roads clean but we, the public, have to take responsibility for the paper and plastic we create and dispose of it properly. The Parish Council decided not to have a Christmas tree this year but spend the money on charities instead. The village Christmas tree this year was paid for by the village businesses. I find January such a dreary month despite having a birthday in the middle of it but there always is an upside, the days start to get longer and spring is not too far away. I wish you all a happy 2019. Please do not forget if you have an issue with the council, please give me a telephone call on 07800736557 or email: barry. abraham@IOW.gov.uk .

Simple tricks for keeping you and your house warm in winter. Just a few easy changes around the house can make a huge difference. Use your curtains - Heat from the sun is free so make the most of it. Open your curtains and let the sunlight in during the day to make use of this free heat. When it gets dark, shut your curtains, which act as another layer of insulation and keep warmth in your rooms. You should also make sure you don’t have any leaks or gaps so that the warm air can stay in and the cold air stays out – this also helps to reduce condensation. Reflect the heat - Keep your house warm with some easy foil insulation. Cover a thin sheet of card with tinfoil and place it behind your radiators (if you’re feeling particularly crafty you can make it T-shaped so it sits on your radiator brackets). It’ll reflect the heat back into your rooms, meaning they warm up faster and retain more heat. If DIY isn’t your thing, you can also buy ready made foil insulation. Move your sofa - It might feel great to have your favourite seat in front of the radiator, but it’s absorbing heat that could be warming your home. By moving it away from the radiator, hot air can circulate freely. The same goes for your curtains or drying clothes – keep them away from the radiator so that you can get the most out of your heat source. Wrap up warm - If you have a hot water tank, make sure it is properly lagged – or insulated. This will keep the water warmer for longer, and reduce heating costs. Block out the draughts - Even a simple solution such as a making your own sausage dog draught excluder will help keep the warmth in your home or use any spare foam pipe lagging as a door draught excluder – just cut a section to fit the bottom of your door, then slide it on to form a tight seal against the floor. You can do this yourself for very little cost. Self-adhesive rubber seals around doors and windows and door draught excluders are relatively cheap and easy to install. So it’s worth getting those doors and windows sealed before winter properly kicks in. Use the oven to heat the house - Once dinner comes out of the oven, we all close the door again. But why waste that heat? Leave the oven door open and let the heat transfer slowly into your kitchen, it’ll help keep your house warm while you eat. 13

How valuable is your health and wellbeing? By Nickie Short January is often a time of new beginnings and good intentions. In 2019 why not make a commitment to getting to where you want to be in life? I offer a variety of weekly classes but I also offer individual sessions for people who want something more bespoke. However, with my experience as a support worker combined with 20 years of teaching yoga to people with ongoing physical and mental health needs, I like to look at where you are now, where you want to be and what tools we can introduce into your life to ensure that you get there. This might be physically, emotionally, mentally or energetically. Most of the practices I share with you can be introduced into the challenging daily circumstances of life, rather than being a specific mat practice. A wide range of holistic practices can work with the physical body, the breath, changing thought patterns and approaches to life, relaxation and amending lifestyle. Recently I have supported people through, big changes in life situations, overcoming severe anxiety, stroke recovery, grief, fear and lack of confidence, physical sports injuries to name a few.
