And that’s it. 2019 - done. Welcome to the January issue and Happy New Year to you all. I hope you all had a good Christmas and you managed to grab a little time to relax with family and friends. It’s not just a new year to celebrate but also a new decade. It’s been an amazing year for Island Magazines, we are continuing to grow and reach more islanders every month. I enjoy hearing the positive feedback from readers, advertisers and contributors. I am very lucky in that I can say, I do love my job and enjoy every minute of putting each issue together Although January tends to be a little quieter our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section still has plenty to offer including regular community events. Take a look at pages 12 and 13 to find out what’s on. I hope you all have a great January and remember to keep warm and well as I’m sure there is cold weather on the way. I look forward to catching up with you again next month.

News Report from Wootton Bridge Councillor Barry Abraham 07800736557 | Email:- barry.abraham@iow.gov.uk The Winter Night Shelter is now up and running at the former Barton Primary School in Newport. This is for people who are sleeping rough across the Island, it is a partnership between the Isle of Wight council and the Salvation Army and kitchen facilities are available along with showers and toilets and people will be offered help to access services across the public sector. One item that was caught up in purdah is the consultation on the council housing strategy, this will set out how the council intends to deliver low cost housing that is both low cost to buy and available to rent at a level most island families can afford. The council will use its own land supply in partnership with housing associations and through its own development company IWight Developments. I mentioned in my last report that I had emailed Island Roads to find out if it was their intention to resurface the roads in the village that have a concrete surface, such as Footways and Rectory Drive etc, unfortunately they have no plans at present. I will keep the pressure on them as I believe there is a desperate need to upgrade these roads. I also mentioned the Cedars traffic lights and the complaints I have received at the number of vehicles jumping the red lights which does seem to be cars waiting to turn into Station Road when coming down the High Street. The lights change, the cars turn right and by this time the pedestrian sequence has gone green, putting cars and pedestrians in conflict. 4

I am still in contact with Island Roads to get this situation resolved. I hope the weather improves soon, I am fed up with all the rain but at least with January, the evenings slowly start to get longer. May I wish all residents a happy 2020. Please do not forget if you have an issue with the council, please give me a telephone call on 07800736557 or email: barry.abraham@IOW.gov.uk. Barry Abraham.

Keep Warm and Keep Well This Winter The next couple of months the weather is likely to turn cold and this is the time to look after yourself, your family, elderly neighbours and friends. The cold weather can make some health problems worse and even lead to serious complications especially in those 65 or older, or anyone who has a long-term health condition. One of the biggest problems for many, especially those living on their own, is not staying warm enough in their homes. When temperatures fall below 8C, older adults can have an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, flu, pneumonia, and in serious cases of low temperatures – hypothermia. Older adults can quickly lose body heat and aren’t always aware of their temperature, making it easy for them to become too cold, too quickly. Body temperature below 35C (normal temperature is 37C) can cause hypothermia. Hypothermia is particularly dangerous for those living alone as there’s not someone around to notice the signs.

Later signs of hypothermia: Early signs of hypothermia: • Slow or jerky movements including • Cold hands and feet • Puffy or swollen face trouble walking and clumsiness • Pale skin • Slow heartbeat • Slow or slurred speech • Slow, shallow breathing • Lethargic • Loss of consciousness • Anger or confusion If you notice signs of hypothermia, call 999 and seek immediate medical attention. Check on older neighbours and relatives, and those with heart or breathing (respiratory) problems, to make sure they: • are safe and well • are warm enough, especially at night • have stocks of food and medicines so they do not need to go out during very cold weather Here are a few tips to keep you and your family warm and well this winter:• keep your bedroom at 18C all night if you can – and keep the bedroom window closed • use a hot water bottle or electric blanket to keep warm in bed – but do not use both at the same time • have at least 1 hot meal a day – eating regularly helps keep you warm • have hot drinks regularly • draw curtains at dusk and keep doors closed to block out draughts • get your heating system checked regularly by a qualified professional • wrap up warm and wear thick socks indoors.

News Report from Cllr Wayne Whittle. Tel 07792 670771 Twitter @RydeAbide E wayne.whittle@iow.gov.uk Happy New Year 2020 is predicted to be a big year for Ryde Ryde Town Council has been awaiting the outcome from bids and feasibility studies that, if positive, could lead to further decisions to be made. If it wins the bid for the 7.5 million of Historic England funding for Ryde Theatre then Ryde Town Council will have to decide how to acquire the Theatre and take the restoration and rejuvenation project forward. Since putting a press release into the media asking for interested residents to come forward and volunteer to create a “Friends of Ryde Theatre group” I’ve received 7 expressions of interest. If anyone else would like to contact me you can email wayne.whittle@iow.gov.uk RTC should soon be receiving a professional feasibility report on the condition and prospects of commercially taking over and running Ryde Harbour. Once again the information in the report, if positive, will lead to an RTC member decision on best way forward or not with the Harbour. The beach cleaning and grounds maintenance contracts have been retendered and won, RTC financially top up both services so they are delivered to a high standard, it’s important that we 10

have competent new providers going forward. The online consultation on “Pubic Protection Orders” begins this month and I hope many residents take part by providing their views particularly where dogs are concerned, as I’ve had many residents approach me over this so now is the opportunity to add your weight to the consultation. Ryde will also be moving forward with the High Street pedestrianisation and regeneration of its public realm, working closely with Historic England, residents and stakeholders to develop a scheme and seek further funding opportunities to deliver it. The Isle of Wight Council bid for “South East Hampshire Rapid transport” funding for 15 million to improve Ryde transport links with Portsmouth via better gateway infrastructure and access is expected to come to its conclusion in February, not forgetting the already won funding of 25 million to restore Ryde Railway Pier and a further 26 million funding for island line infrastructure. I can’t remember more opportunities falling on Ryde at once, if we get a warm sunny Summer and the Big Soaker tilt bucket finally works down at the splash park, I think we’ve cracked it as a town. So let’s keep our fingers crossed and hope we all enjoy a positive year.

News Report from Councillor Charles Chapman for Ryde South Email:- Charles.Chapman@iow.gov.uk | Mobile number 07970 009608 Happy New Year to you all and I sincerely hope that you had a good Christmas, I know that I did, especially with the excellent Panto at Shanklin Theatre. Did any of you go to see the extraordinary displays in December of the Christmas trees at the churches? What a pleasure and what thought and enthusiasm went into such glorious displays! Moving on into 2020, the results of the election are in and we must now, hopefully, all move forward. And, it is with that thought in mind that I decided to dedicate my newsletter to ‘What have I said that I will do over the past year and what have I actually succeeded in completing?’ I try very hard not to say or write what I cannot achieve. Often much to the chagrin of many of my colleagues and sometimes even my friends. Living and working in Ryde, for longer than I care to remember, (that would give my age away) means a great deal to me. Despite ill health, I go round my ward every month, report what I have seen to the appropriate department or service. By and large I have, on your behalf, received good service and prompt action and indeed, sometimes, even thanks for reporting and noticing potential and actual problems, including graffiti, fly tipping, damaged road signs, scrappy grass verges etc. Mundane they may be! But, these are what contribute to the quality of our everyday lives. Local and national companies have supported our summer programmes and helped raise money for people who are less fortunate than many of us and provide services and entertainment for locals and visitors alike. 14

Island Roads have served my Ward very well indeed, and I would like to add my thanks. The schools programme has gone well with teachers and parents commenting on the new facilities at Oakfield. Many of you may already be aware that I support the Brownies, as the president of the Royal British Legion, as well as other Ryde youth organisations. Best of all was the collaboration of Sovereign Housing on the regeneration of the ‘Arc foundation’ at Oakfield Road. ‘May’ celebrations still ring in my ears and it’s been a great pleasure to follow up and see this, once derelict area, literally flowering and being used by both schools and locals alike. We, I mean Ryde citizens, did well at the Gibraltar Games, where island young people took part, including the many Ryde adults who also helped and participated. Summer events went well, with the IOW Parks Services, once again producing flowers in bloom for Ryde, worthy of a gold at Chelsea Flower Show. The good neighbour policy has not fared so well, it started off with a bang but really fizzed out. We need more volunteers and better recording. At present I don’t see how this is going to be possible and I apologise for it not succeeding as well as it should. Supporting our hospital to keep services on the island has been singularly unsuccessful with the closure of the Dementia Ward, late last year, rehab still
