Dear Readers Welcome and thank you for picking up a copy of the July issue. June has been a varied month weather wise and the tourists have been arriving to take pleasure in our beautiful Island and to experience just a little of what we enjoy on a daily basis. You will also find the ever popular ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 8 and 9. In this issue we have articles from Mr Wally AWOL and Friends and a news update from the Friends of St Mary’s Hospital as well as news reports, business editorials and much more. News Report for Wootton Bridge Town and County Councillor Barry Abraham Email:- barry.abraham@iow.gov.uk As I sit down to write my news report for Island Magazines, the election was just the other week and far from delivering a clear answer, the outcome is more confused and it is all very depressing. The only thing I know is that I do not want another election. Three votes in a year is plenty, thank you. I have been appointed to the council cabinet (executive) looking after Planning & Housing which can be a very contentious area leading to heated arguments on all sides. As I have said previously I am against large scale developments that deliver little for communities. But we do have a real shortage of affordable housing to rent or buy and it is something as an Island we need to face up to. How we can build these homes in a sustainable way without too much controversy? The Isle of Wight Festival has come and gone and despite a really wet night prior to the start and Friday night being a bit damp, it all went off very well, although I did get held up in traffic going into Newport on the first morning of the one way traffic flow along Fairlee. The old plane tree on Wootton Bridge has been identified as being in a dangerous condition and there is some doubt about its long term future and options are being explored. As more information becomes available I will let you know. Residents that live around the Recreation Ground have raised with me concerns on a number of issues. Parking during rugby matches is very chaotic and accesses have been blocked. I have asked officers to look at how this might be overcome. I recently met with residents to look at the ever present 4

issue of dog fouling and heard about dogs being let off leads and the owners not being in control of their dogs and in one instance, a dog stalking a young child walking with its grandparents. Clearly this is unacceptable and a solution needs to be found. One suggestion is to have a bylaw requiring dogs to be kept on leads at all times, this is something I am loath to see happen but things really do need to change. On the parish council, congratulations to Steve Porter on becoming Chairman and to Carol Walton on becoming Vice Chairman. Steve has worked hard for a number of years with the Parish Council, particularly with the Old School in New Road and has made sure Wootton has somewhere young people can go that is safe and secure. The former parish Chairman, Ken Morris, has been unwell for some time and I wish him well. Please do not forget that the Parish Council meets on the third Tuesday of every month except in August. Please come along if you have concerns on anything affecting Wootton which you can raise at the meeting. The London terror attacks a couple of weeks ago on Borough Market was for me an outrage as when we go for a weekend in London, it is one of the places I love to visit with all the food stalls and teas and spices from all around the world. It truly is one of the melting pots of the world. What has this to do with the Isle of Wight you ask, well, one of the stalls sells Isle of Wight tomatoes and you would never believe how many different types of tomatoes there are.

A lot has been happening at the Friends of St Mary’s Hospital since our last update. We had a record number of applications in 2016 for funds for equipment and resources from various parts of the Hospital We were able to make a large number of grants which will enhance the already excellent care and service we Islanders get from St Mary’s. The items have been ordered and are coming into use daily. Examples of what we were able to provide are monitoring equipment for community midwives, traction splints, transfer hoists for stroke patients, warming equipment for hypothermia cases dealt with by ambulances, dementia friendly crockery, and learning resources for children with special needs. We also looked after our staff with some exercise equipment and refurbishing a rest room. We have taken the opportunity to give a fresh look to our branding and have launched a new website. Check it out at www.fosmiow.co.uk. We are now communicating regularly on Facebook and gradually building up a healthy following there. It is important to let people know what we are doing for the Hospital and how they can help us to do it. Our amazing volunteers are running our friendly cafe and well stocked shop in the Hospital foyer. And we now have an outlet in the Health and Wellbeing Centre in Ryde. With the Laidlaw cafe and the daily ward trolley, that gives us five outlets to look after so if you have some time to spare to volunteer, please do contact us through the website or ring our office on 534405.

At a cost of £3,000, the Friends have provided 20 traction splints for the ambulances, to be used to relieve excruciating pain from certain leg fractures. Paramedic Mike Wigley (pictured) explained that essential pre-hospital treatment for someone suffering a mid-shaft femur fracture is to relieve the pain through a combination of pain relief and splintage.

Although legacies and donations are very important to us, our cafes and shop are our main source of income, and we do see these facilities as being a very important part of our service to the hospital. The coffee and tea is good and reasonably priced and there is a range of sandwiches and snacks. We have “Splintage is particularly important, as joined the Hospital initiative to promote less separating the fracture bone fragments sugary food and drinks and our customers are provides significant pain relief and reassurgetting used to that. Our lovely staff have a ance for the patient,” he said. “If a bone is caring attitude and always reach out to those shattered in half the leg muscles immediately in the cafe who are struggling. This is not pull the bones together, and it really hurts.” always physically, as inevitably we meet many people who have had bad news or who are worried about a loved one. We work closely with the Hospital to make sure that our funds really do make a difference to patients, staff and the Island community and we enjoy great support from the Trust, to help us to help them. So if you can help us in any way, do get in touch via the website or by ringing the number above. We would love to hear from you. 6

News Report from - Cllr Wayne Whittle, Hunters Way, Binstead Hill, Ryde. Email wayne.whittle@iow.gov.uk Tel 07792 670771 Twitter @RydeAbide The shelters and street furniture on North Walk are finally getting a lick of paint and Island Roads have promised to get the job completed by the end of June in an effort to clean up our public realm before the summer holidays.

I attended the Wightlink Raiders awards event and was heartened to see the three teams and coaches honoured with gifts and trophy’s.

The flood prevention works are due to start at the end of the summer season on the Harbour Beach where the outfall pipe will be put into the Harbour to let the Monkton Mead flow directly into the Solent.

I provided the teams with 5 RydeSlide tickets that they will use to gain sponsorship funding to go towards making Wight Ice Leisure Ltd into a full blown charity (they need 5k to do this).

The Environment Agency have started to contact residents with properties that border Simeon Street Recreation Ground to discuss the wall they intend to erect around the recreation Ground to protect them from future flooding.

The RydeSlide tickets are selling well and several time slots are already sold out for the day on Sunday 16th July.

This is the second part of the flood prevention engineering Works and will require a sheet piled waterproof centre to the wall that will be hidden behind a more traditional facade to be agreed. To do this some tree roots will be severed and representative from the EA want to meet with all locally affected resident to discuss best way forward regarding their boundary trees. If you have a boundary fence with the Recreation Ground and haven’t already been contacted by the EA you can email Ian Tripp at ian.tripp@environment-agency.gov.uk and request a visit. The Recreation Ground will still have the same entrances but waterproof gates will be added that can be closed to tank any ensuing flood water during times of heavy rain. 12

I’m still working with the group to explore ways to bring back ice Skating to the Island.

There is no Slide ticket lottery this year so we only have 500 tickets to sell for the day and they are going fast. If you want to buy yourself or someone else a ticket you can pay me at the Big Kahuna (leaving your name and phone number) or go online donate and purchase them from www. rydeslide.uk The event will be bigger this year with the slide moving all the way down to the bottom of Union Street with riders landing in a tank on the Esplanade, the event will spread onto the Western Gardens with a bouncy assault course and hospitality tents. There will be the usual music at the top of the Slide with Rob da Bank putting in an appearance DJ-ing, Compton White and Talek Dul performing. All proceeds will be divided between our local big 5 groups and charities the Waterside Pool, Wight Ice Leisure Ltd, Aspire Ryde, Inshore Rescue and the fire services annual charity.

Mr Wally AWOL and Friends Mr Wally AWOL and Friends is an Isle of Wight (Cowes based) self funded voluntary organisation which rescues and rehabilitates Wild Birds. It is run by Kay Ounsworth, with help from Donna Henderson, Tracy Lane and Leah Ounsworth. Their aim is to help sick and injured birds back to peak health and get them returned back into the wild once this has been accomplished. They work closely with a fantastic team of veterinary surgeons. If you spot a sick or injured bird, the best course of action is to: 1) Secure the bird in a box with air holes. 2) Give the bird something comfy to nestle on such as tissue, kitchen roll, an old towel or something similar. 3) Place the box with the bird inside in a dark, warm, quiet place while you seek assistance. They welcome calls for advice or to arrange collection. Please call 07765564479 or 01983 247528 or message their Facebook page: www.facebook.com/wallyawol They work almost entirely by bus, so reaching more remote parts of the Island at night time is not always possible. However they are happy to arrange a more convenient meeting place, grab a taxi or advise as necessary. If you would like to help keep Wally AWOL running smoothly, Pets with Hart in Newport (opposite Hurst) happily accept donations for them and they also have an Amazon Wish List: Wally AWOL Wish List Link: www.amazon.co.uk/registry/wishlist/ C0X58RG47PSS
