News Report from - Cllr Wayne Whittle. Tel 07792 670771 Email wayne.whittle@iow.gov.uk Twitter @RydeAbide The Ryde Slide event will take place on Sunday 22nd July this year in Union Street and will be raising money for our 5 local groups and charities, Aspire Ryde, Inshore Rescue, Waterside pool, Brainy Bunch and Ryde Arena Group.
waterproof gates will be installed, once the summer is over the EA will return to the Harbour Beach and remove the old redundant outfall pipe whilst connecting the new diverted pipe leading into the Harbour.
We will have an additional Mini Water Slide at the top of the street for children under 10 years old and toddlers to ride if accompanied by parents; you will be able to pay to ride the Mini Slide on the day at £2 each.
It’s looking like the local ward boundaries will be changing in the near future as the Island has had a boundary review that will divide the population more equally between the local Councillors and to do this any new builds or planning permissions have to be considered.
If you would like to ride the 200 metre Ryde Slide book your tickets online at rydeslide.uk
See you all at the Ryde Slide
Don’t wait too long as they are going fast and you don’t want to miss your chance to ride it this year as it may be the last. The weather has been lovely and Ryde has been well attended, the sand on the beaches has been raked back from the sea walls and levelled off for summer (let’s hope we get a lovely 6 weeks weather for the School holidays). The Environment Agency will begin to clear the Harbour beach from the 2nd of July and leave the fencing up for the Pride Event on the 21st. After the event the fencing will be removed and the beach will be clear and back to normal for the rest of the summer. The work will continue in Simeon recreation ground where the new flood wall and 2

Welcome to the July issue and thank you for picking up a copy of your local community magazine. This month’s issue, as usual is packed with news, information, advertisers, feature editorials and much more. Now summer is here the Island is getting busier and there are many events happening throughout July and you can find details of these on the ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 10 and 11. July officially sees the start of Carnival season and we will keep you updated of when and where they are taking place. One of the best parts about my job is the positive feedback I receive from readers who let me know how useful and informative they find the magazine. I also hear from advertisers who have received a good response from their advert. I hope you all have a fantastic July and lets hope the sunshine continues and we can keep on enjoying the Island and all it has to offer. Until next month...

News Report from Wootton Bridge Councillor Barry Abraham 07800736557 | Email:- barry.abraham@iow.gov.uk June is halfway through as I put pen to paper for my July report, the weather has become warm and the evenings almost reached their longest daylight hours which means there is plenty of time to keep the lawns cut. Mrs Abraham’s roses are full of blooms and are quite a picture this year and her lavender bushes will shortly start to flower and the bumble bees will make full use of the pollen. It never ceases to amaze me how many types of bee that there are.

What you got there? The little red on this month’s front cover is a personal favourite of mine and local photographer Zoe Cox was able to get up close and personal with this little lady.
Zoe has taken the time and dedication to visit her local nature reserve on an almost daily basis (in fact I wouldn’t be surprised if it was more than once some days!) and her perseverance has paid off as Zoe is now in the position where she can hand feed her and stroke her. You can obviously see from this photo how inquisitive she is and wants to know exactly what Zoe has in her hand. This shows the trust that can grow between local wildlife and humans. Zoe is a wildlife fanatic and has thousands of photos of foxes, birds of prey and her favourite of them all, red squirrels. Choosing just one picture for the front cover became a very hard task as she has managed to capture the beauty of them all. This is the second time that one of Zoe’s photos has appeared on the front cover, and last time was the amazing picture of a fox, which once again she gained the trust of, and he was happy to pose for her whilst she took pictures.

News Report from Councillor Charles Chapman for Ryde South Email:- Charles.Chapman@iow.gov.uk | Mobile number 07970 009608 The school holidays are almost upon us, with long drawn out days and hopefully dry BBQ evenings. For many of us, parents and grandparents alike, it’s planning days out with the kids that are both enjoyable and affordable. When planning busy child-centred days, please consider, ‘The Arc,’ at Oakvale which has already been environmentally improved, with more to come. The footpath which runs from the football club and links with other interesting paths and woodland are worth a second look. I tried this with my own grandkids where they photographed the flowers/leaf heads of different wayside plants, then we used the internet to identify and draw them. They actually enjoyed making a scrap book! Also remember, Puckpool Park, always a joy to look at, and then explore the Eastern and Western gardens. It’s free. Don’t forget our marvellous sea front and beach including, Ryde Canoe Lake. I have had several people tell me that the upkeep of these facilities are a waste of hard earned local money. I do not agree, and from your emails and comments neither do the majority of you. I am always pleased to hear your views and, where I can, look into your concerns. With various partners we are working hard to improve Ryde South, repairing and resurfacing roads, signs being repaired or replaced, bins being emptied etc., lobbying for our local bus route and supporting our local schools and shops. The latter is vital as they provide much needed local employment. Over the years I have encouraged strong links with the IOW College, who provide training and experience to many of our youngsters as well as new opportunities for older folks. Our local housing provider has been most co-operative and local tenants are beginning to see results. I see, as part of my job, to encourage and when necessary hustle the
various bodies into doing their jobs. Also to recognise when they do. My congratulations to all at the football club at Oakvale, which continues to go from strength to strength. Get your young people involved, they will receive a warm welcome at this club, which has a bright future. Sorry to bang-on, but loneliness is a killer! I am involved with helping a number of people who live alone. Often, it is not financial need, but the loss of a partner, parent, friend or even their job. It is then difficult for people to pick up the thread of making new friends, finding new employment or meeting a new partner. So, as usual, I make my plea of introducing yourself to your neighbour, or if they reach out to you, make time as 5 minutes can make all the difference, a wave and smile can ‘make someone’s day’. Ryde has a very busy month with Pride in Ryde. A good place to view is the Esplanade. The Ryde Slide in Union Street. It’s brilliant, even if you don’t take part. It has a carnival atmosphere and raises funds for local charities. I would like to give my personal thanks to all who are involved in our festivities. Often overlooked is the contribution made by our local police. Not only do they have to control the crowds but they enhance the festive atmosphere. A difficult ‘line’ to achieve. One last plea, if you see anyone fly tipping, please, please report it. Everyone is working really hard to clean up and improve our area and these people have no respect for us or where we live. It costs money to remove it and worse still, it encourages vermin to breed and invade our homes. Thanks for reading this and have a good summer.
