YOU can change YOUR life By Maggie Currie I have been to many seminars, courses, retreats, conferences, workshops where it is plainly obvious the people running them are using them to upsell their more expensive products. These can cost thousands of pounds and whilst they give you a glimpse of what they offer, you never actually get to benefit from it unless you pay out that money. There is also a lot of claptrap being sold out there that is solely to make money, and is not focused on YOU. I offer coaching and mentoring - for YOU to make changes in YOUR life, to help you to have more fun, more freedom and less stress. That is it... There is no catch. If you would like help with your personal development, career development, relationship issues, limiting beliefs or something else, please get in touch via hello@maggiecurrie.co.uk and we can have a chat about how best YOU and I can work together. Sometimes it can seem to be too scary to be coached on your own, so I also offer group coaching. There is a powerful energy when groups get together for growth and transformation, both personally and collectively. I offer face-to-face, phone or skype coaching sessions for a minimum of 3 sessions as I believe building trust with each other takes time. The 3 sessions of coaching include interim email support. Coaching sessions are anything from 30 minutes to 90 minutes depending on how much is covered or how much time is needed. YOU can change YOUR life for as little as ÂŁ150.00, and you are worth every single penny.

Do you want to make some changes in your life? Not sure where to start? Work with me, Maggie Currie, Professional Transformational Coach. Learn how to live life like YOU and not how you think other people want you to be. This will bring you more freedom, more fun and less stress. Thank you for picking up a copy of your local community magazine which is filled with news, information, features and much more. There will be no mention of the weather this month, as I really can’t find any suitable words to describe it... I’m simply throwing open the curtains each day and just dealing with whatever season it is! The next couple of months are set to be really exciting as July kicks off carnival season and who doesn’t like a good carnival! There are 18 carnival events happening across the island in July and August with a mixture of children’s, main and illuminated. I think we can safely say there will be something for everyone. On page 7 you will find a handy list of locations, dates and times to cut out and keep so you don’t miss out. On a more serious note we have got together with Andy Hollebon of the Organ Donation Committee, Isle of Wight NHS Trust to bring awareness about the changes happening to organ donation next year and the importance of discussing your wishes with your family. You will find this feature on page 14. I hope you all have a great July and I look forward to catching up with you again soon.

News Report from Cllr Wayne Whittle. Tel 07792 670771 Twitter @RydeAbide E wayne.whittle@iow.gov.uk I was pleased to support Ryde Town Council’s election of new Mayor, deputy Mayor, Finance Chairman, deputy and Planning Chairman and Deputy. The Town Council will hopefully now have a more outward focused and positive lease of life and will be working hard to attract government funding streams that any Primary Retail Town and premier Gateway deserves, it’s high time we gave Newport some competition in bid writing (as Ryde used to). Unlike Newport, Ryde already has a pedestrianised High Street and any funding that can provide capital for a better public realm must be sought and applied for. I’ve personally always had an ambition to cover the pedestrianised part of the High Street with an open ended ornate glass or tented self supporting roof running from the Edinburgh Wool Mill up to the Star pub, covering Victoria Square (could have indoor market) and the pedestrian part of John Street. Something like this could anchor the Town as an indoor all weather shopping area that could compete with Tesco and other Island supermarkets on rainy days. Many government bids, like the Heritage High Street fund call for innovative ambitious bids and this type of project could perhaps fit the bill. Ryde being the “Town on the Beach” also needs to connect it’s gateway better to Town and Beach via better pedestrian friendly green corridors, walkways and signage. 4

Our car parks need real time parking space availability signs that direct visitors and residents to the nearest car park with available space before they have already driven through and exited Ryde. As one of the most historically interesting Towns on the Island with our beautiful ornate Georgian/Victorian buildings lining Union Street, the Esplanade and beyond is why we need to make sure RTC put in a strong bid for the “Heritage High Street Fund” this year, so it can gain much needed funding to preserve it’s buildings and Town and seafront offer. A “Ryde Place Plan” could help us attract funding in the same way the “Newport Place plan” has for Newport, so something our new members of RTC should consider. The Waterside trust have had the tower for the “Big soaker” tilt Bucket installed in the splash park but have now discovered the water pump is broken and needs replacing, the plant equipment for the splash park is very old and needs updating, hope they can get it working soon as one day, hopefully, these cold winds will stop and our lovely summer will finally begin. It’s good to see Ryde Lifeguards are back patrolling our beaches for the coming season and our beaches are getting raked and preened again. Mark Downer (head of parking services) attended our local Ryde North East Action Group meeting and discussed the criteria necessary to obtain resident and limited time waiting zones. continued over the page

News Report from Cllr Wayne Whittle continued During the discussion he informed the meeting that a local survey in Ryde North East will begin the first week in June and continue for 6 weeks to investigate vehicle movements and off street parking numbers compared to on street. Once the survey is completed he will be bringing the findings back to the RENAG meeting in September to present to local residents (please note our flood group meeting starts at 5pm and then run into our local action group meeting depending on what time the flood group business is completed) will provide the date in a future report.

News Report from Councillor Charles Chapman for Ryde South Email:- Charles.Chapman@iow.gov.uk | Mobile number 07970 009608 Well, we have had a few nice sunny days! One of which, I was really pleased about, was on the opening of the ‘Arc Woodland Celebration Safari’. There was so much going on, of which I have included a picture, and shows what is freely available at the Arc Playground. It is situated in Slade Road, Oakfield, and is open all the year round, 365 days a week. Over £100,000 plus investment has been made into this site, which includes new swings, climbing frames, information tablets, picnic benches, a basketball pitch and a brilliant skate park. The ‘Arc Playpark’ looks to be wheelchair and pram friendly with plenty of seats for carers and parents to enjoy what is going on as well as joining in the many activities. The area is monitored

with CCTV which includes ‘Night Vision’ for extra safety, thus reassuring both parents and vulnerable people of the extra security. It is open for all residents of the Isle of Wight, and to kick this off we have a schools programme for local children, which through planned/available handson-activities in the Arc will increase their awareness of the natural habitat and hopefully their love of nature. I think now that it is accepted that caring for the environment starts very young. For me, personally, I have been working with both schools and youth groups, for over 30 years, to encourage a greater awareness and participation in looking after our environment. It was one way, by being a local councillor, that I could actively encourage, particularly schools and therefore young people in conservation work. As you know, local council budgets have been slashed by central government, so the input by Vectis and Sovereign Housing has been both astonishing and welcome. An enormous thank you to them and their team, who have tirelessly put this project together. For numerous free events throughout the summer, check out local websites including ‘Down to the Coast’ for activities in your area. continued over the page

News Report from Councillor Charles Chapman continued The Royal British Legion had a fund raising event on Saturday 25th May at which I was privileged, as President of the Ryde Branch, to address the Lord Lieutenant Mrs. Susie Sheldon and High Sheriff, Mr. Geoff Underwood. We also welcomed dignities from the Isle of Wight Council and the Mayor of Ryde. We raised over £300 for the Poppy Appeal. This event could not have happened without all those unnamed volunteers and the Royal British Legion Standard Bearers. I cannot thank these people enough as they come out in all weathers, different times of the year, different days of the week and unstintingly give of their time and often their own vehicles, equipment and money. Thank you all. I know that I have had a busy month but I have still had time to ‘Walk my Ward’. Island Roads have been resurfacing several of our local roads and repairing damaged drains etc., which have all been marked. I have been looking at kerbing and footpaths as I have had several request about our policy for wheelchair and pram users and I would like to hear your thoughts? Last but not least, the Summer Planters on the sea front look amazing as usual. It’s a beautiful place to visit and walk. Don’t forget the area around the canoe lake with the children’s play park and splash pool. Walk a few metres further towards Apply Park. All these activities are free. Have an enjoyable summer and remember there are still so many lovely places on this Island to visit and enjoy, at no charge.

News Report from Wootton Bridge Councillor Barry Abraham 07800736557 | Email:- barry.abraham@iow.gov.uk As I write my July report, commemorations have been taking place to mark the 75th anniversary of D-Day and nobody could not be touched by the memories of the veterans as recalled on the TV. Such bravery from men who at the time were little more than boys. I have always known that soldiers were stationed in New Copse, Wootton and part of our old farm house (Kite Hill House) had been partly requisitioned for army officers accommodation but it has only been in recent years that I realised that this was for the D-Day preparations. I asked my mother who was 8 years old at the time and growing up on the farm, what her memories were and she can vividly remember seeing the soldiers in New Copse and how friendly they were and would call at the farm for milk. On one occasion when my grandfather’s Fordson Standard tractor ran out of fuel, the soldiers came out to help get it started with some fuel and afterwards my grandfather said “I do not know what it was but the tractor purred like a kitten”. Sadly with D-Day happening, New Copse was empty. Local people came to see what had been left behind. Mums memory is seeing shaving mirrors hung on the trees still in place.

I arranged a meeting in Park Road to look at safety issues with residents and officers from both the IWC and Island roads. Liz the parish clerk was also in attendance. The meeting took place at the cycle track crossing point on Park Road, to highlight the safety problems of vehicles over the 6’6” width restriction using the road regularly and breaking the 40MPH speed limit. Safety issues are paramount. A resident has raised concerns about the number of cars using Rectory Drive and the speed of the cars. I regularly have residents raising this problem as it impacts Church Road, Footways, Palmers Road and Brocks Copse Road, as drivers try to bypass the High Street and Lushington Hill lights. It will be raised with the parish council at the July meeting on the 18th , 7 pm at the Old School, New Road. Last month I mentioned the lack of swallows and had seen none, I am pleased to say that they have arrived, if somewhat late and have taken up residence in the barn, hopefully they will again raise another brood.

Nothing much to report on planning issues. The Palmers Farm application is still outstanding. Residents have raised concerns about trees being cut down. I report the My grandmother always thought of the young concerns to planning and an officer always pays a visit, most times the work has already men that had left and gone to their deaths. been agreed, other times advice is given or told to stop. Do your family know whether you want to be an organ donor? Have you ever talked about organ donation with them? If the answer is no, then you’re not alone; sadly, many donation opportunities are lost every year because families don’t know if their loved one wanted to be a donor. From spring 2020, all adults in England will be considered an organ donor when they die unless they had recorded a decision not to donate or are in one of the excluded groups. Even with a change in the law next year we need more people to talk about organ donation to increase the number of transplants that happen. It will be just as important in 2020 to join the Organ Donation Register and discuss your wishes with family and friends as it is now. You can record your decision to opt in or out on the Organ Donor Register. Those excluded will be people under 18, people who have lived in England for less than 12 months or who are not living here voluntarily, and people who lack the capacity to understand the change. Adults covered by the change will still have a choice whether they want to be an organ donor and which organs they would like to donate, and their families will still be involved before organ donation goes ahead. In the UK…… • Around 6,000 people There’s no time like the present to talk about it. Nationally across the UK are waiting for millions of people are on the NHS Organ Donor Register an organ transplant already but only one in every hundred will die in • Three people a day die in circumstances where they could donate, so every donor is need of a transplant due to precious. Here on the Island there are about 60,000 people a shortage of people being on the Organ Donation Register which means there are willing to donate organs around 80,000 people who are not on the register. Last year • Only one in three adults there were 8 organ donors on the Island resulting in 20 has told their partner / family patients receiving a transplant. You could help someone their organ donation decision. waiting for that vital call, by joining the NHS Organ Donor More info www. Register and by telling your family. Register now at organdonation.nhs.uk www.organdonation.nhs.uk. Staff at St. Mary’s Hospital work closely with Specialist Organ Donation Nurses from the national NHS Blood and Transplant organisation to ensure that organ donation proceeds smoothly in a way that meets the wishes of the donor and family. The Island’s Organ Donation Committee want to start a support group for everyone with an interest in organ donation – friends and family of donors, donor recipients and anyone else with a particular interest. This informal group would provide an opportunity to talk about experiences and to participate in awareness raising activities. If you would be interested in being part of the Island’s Organ Donation Support Group then please contact me by e-mailing andyhollebon@nhs.net or on 07544-555839.
