Servicing, Replacements, Repairs and Maintenance Hot water and ensuring your house is heated over the winter months is a necessity, but it is also important to remember that some older boilers and those that aren’t serviced regularly can end up costing households much more money than necessary and will most likely not be working to their full potential. Local business, Primo Technical Services Ltd have been in the industry for over 25 years and offer a range of services including all aspects of domestic gas services, safety checks and installations, power flushing, heating and ventilation, plumbing, unvented systems and electrical. They provide regular maintenance as well as emergency breakdowns and they always turn up when they say they will! They also believe it makes sense to ensure your boiler is working efficiently and all their new boiler installations come with a ten year warranty so that alone is something worth looking into to ensure you aren’t throwing money down the drain.

Hello and welcome to the July issue. I’m extremely excited that this issue is back to being in print as the last two months have been online only due to Covid-19 regulations and although this worked well at the time I know many of you missed going out to pick up your copy from local distributors. I haven’t yet reinstated the ‘Dates for your Diary’ section as most events have been cancelled and everything is still very much ‘up in the air’ but to ensure you don’t get bored I have included a double page puzzle section which will keep your brain active!! Following the great response I had last month on how great the new ‘recipe’ section was I thought it was only right that I give you another mouth watering treat, and you will find this on page 14. I have got together with our hedgehog carers this month and on page 16 you will find a useful and informative article along with some gorgeous pictures. Inside you will find reports from local Councillors ensuring residents are kept up to date with news for the area. It is great to see local shops and businesses opening again and shopping will certainly be different to what we are used to, but I think with all that we have gone through the last three month we can adapt to anything. Keep safe everyone and I look forward to catching up with you next month.

LIONS CLUBS OF THE ISLE OF WIGHT - WE SERVE In January 1970 the first Lions club was inaugurated in Ryde. There are now 3 more Clubs and a branch club on the Island. Although these clubs are all working to the same goal, to serve the communities of the Island and beyond, they are all autonomous of each other as they can conduct their business and efforts in different ways, yet can also work together on larger projects. This year Ryde Lions Club are celebrating their 50th anniversary. The club, which was first chartered as the Isle of Wight Lions Club on the 13th January 1970 had 17 Members but when Newport Lions Club was set up The Isle of Wight Lions Club was renamed The Lions Club of Ryde and became the Mother club to Newport. Shortly after, two more clubs started up, first at Ventnor then Sandown & Shanklin Club. Finally, another started in Cowes as a branch of Newport some 16 years ago. Many thousands of pounds have been collected on the island to help local communities but also a much smaller amount has gone to help people who have suffered catastrophic disasters all over the world such as Nepal, and the awful tsunami at Christmas 2004, and closer to home in Boscastle and the floods in Yorkshire. 100% of all monies collected from the public is sent to nominated good causes. Volunteers receive no remuneration for their work in the community but give their time willingly while making sure they have fun doing it! The island clubs are part of a much larger organisation called Lions Clubs International (LCI) and they are one of the largest service organisation in the world with 1.4 million members in over 200 countries. Collecting money is just one part of what they do, as members of this huge organisation they carry out many other tasks as well, such as painting a room or providing carpets for a deserving family or doing beach cleans, building garden fences for people who are unable to afford a replacement of their own and help run free prostate screening tests for men on the island. They also help charitable organisations such as Mountbatten Isle of Wight to run fundraising events, or work hard with others to help keep the Daisy bus running, so that islanders can attend hospital on the mainland for cancer treatment. They care for the environment by collecting plastic and rubbish around our island and collecting used spectacles for use in emerging countries of the world. There are always opportunities to be part of a Lions club on the Island and they are keen to hear from anyone who has a desire to know more about what they do, how they help people and the enjoyment that can be gained from helping others. You can contact them on the island by calling 0345 833 5789 and you will be contacted by the club in your area.

ORDINARY PEOPLE DOING AMAZING THINGS
Daisy, Daisy…. A blanket of daisies reaching as far as the eye can see… and what a beautiful sight it is. Although the photographer of this meadow, James Whillier sees this view many times a day he never gets bored of it and certainly doesn’t take it for granted. He was kind enough to capture it and allow us to share in on this month’s front cover. Daisy Valley as James likes to call it is a very special place, and this wild flower meadow was created by Chris Spence the owner of the farm who over the last 50 years has planted thousands of trees and flowers to ensure the continued survival of our birds and bees.

Just like a baby sitter, except I care for your animals and home, when you need a break/holiday, business trip or respite. I stay in your house, keep your pets happy, healthy and stimulated, clean up after your pets and myself, leave your home clean and odour free. I’ll look after 2, 3 and 4 legged pets, but no Arachnids or Venomous Snakes . “Do you provide dog walking services?” Yes, if it is part of the house sit, (long stay) Day sit or Doggy Day Care, but not as a stand alone service. “ How much do you charge for your services?” It depends on what type of service you want, what breed/animal or pet you’d like us to care for. It’s best to arrange a ‘Meet & Greet’ appointment so we can discuss your requirements, routines and then agree a fee. You can view our price list on the main website. For ‘First time’ bookings, I’m happy to negotiate especially for longer stays/ bookings. “Do you have any experience with horses?” Yes ... My husband is the equine expert. ‘Horse whisperer’- He has an inner calm, a quietness that horses love. He’s an experienced driver and eventer. Me... I have
some experience and basic knowledge of care and can turn in/out your horse, feed, water, pick feet and muck out pens and I can ride. Please call me if you would like to meet ‘Mr Whisper’. “Why are you providing/promoting this service on the Island, when you don’t live here?” When I first came to the Island in May 2017, to dog & house sit for a client who had just moved to Ventnor from mainland; they quickly pointed out that there wasn’t a professional dog & house sitting service for long stays who provided the services that I do. I then set up ‘Pawfect Sitting Services’ and started receiving bookings from September 2017. The business exploded, I renamed it to ‘For Pet’s Sake’. (Until March 20th 2020 and Covid-19 forced me to close temporarily. We are now open again and look forward to caring for your babies and your home.)

News Report from Wootton Bridge Councillor Barry Abraham 07800736557 | Email:- barry.abraham@iow.gov.uk Another month of lockdown is now behind us but thankfully things are starting to open again but you do have to wonder what impact there will be on the High Street in the towns with everybody shopping on line. Well not everybody, I buy very little that way if I can avoid it. I like to be able to see what I am buying. I think it must be an age thing and what about all the waste packaging that comes with it. You see the postman laden with all the boxes and parcels every day, I suppose the only good thing is it is replacing all the letters that are not now being sent because of emails. I rarely receive a letter from residents raising issues, everything is done by email. I was listening to the radio the other day and a historian was saying that because no one sends letters or postcards very much now, it will be difficult for historians to look in to the social history as you can do now for say soldiers on the front line in the Great War. Sending an email will not be the same and will be lost forever. I mentioned last month about meetings being live streamed on the computer, the first meetings have now taken place via Microsoft teams which I think worked reasonably well. I tuned into the first planning meeting for an exciting evenings view (not) but democracy must be seen to be done. I took part in the first cabinet meeting to be live streamed and more meetings are planned for the coming months, details are on the council website. Internal council meetings with council officers can now take place via Microsoft teams, which does mean I can catch up 10
on resident’s issues easier and chase up outstanding matters. Cars are being left at various locations around the village that are not taxed and appear to be dumped, unfortunately there appears to be car dealers leaving their stock on land that is not directly highways but left in places where they need not be taxed and be held on a SORN notice. I have spoken to other councillors and it is a problem across the Island, it is being investigated and hopefully a solution can be found to stop it happening. I have met recently with Lushington Hill residents to look at the drainage issues with road drainage emptying into the resident’s gardens. I received an email from Island Roads giving dates when the work for New Road was going to be carried out from the 27th July, unfortunately this has been cancelled because of the impact on the holiday season and the impact on the businesses. The council has asked for the work to be halted so Wightfibre can carry out their cabling first, when that will be I have yet to find out. It is hard to imagine that in the winter it was so wet through until March and now, three months later it has gone the other way and is now so dry but I am told it has been a good year so far for butterflies which by the amount I have seen when walking through the fields, I think is true. Please do not forget if you have an issue with the council, please give me a telephone call or email.

Home-Made Ice Cream Summer is here at last... and nothing beats a bowl of ice cream on these sweltering days. Gone are the days of needing specialist equipment and with just two ingredients plus your chosen topping it’s so easy to make yourself. This recipe is a favourite of Sophie Toogood who enjoys making this silky smooth ice cream with daughter Layla. They have been experimenting with flavours and below is the main recipe and some of their favourite suggestions for flavours. Ingredients 1 can of condensed milk 2 cups or 450ml of double cream Method 1) Whip the double cream until stiff peaks form. Be careful not to over whip. 2) Add in the can of condensed milk and continue to whip just until the condensed milk is combined with the cream. 3) Add in any flavorings you wish and stir through the mixture. (see ideas below). You can make any combination you wish! 4) Scoop ice cream into resealable tub. Cover the ice cream mixture in clingfilm to stop ice crystals forming, put on the lid and put into the freezer for 6-8 hours until set. If you wanted to make mint chocolate chip ice cream, add in 2tsp of mint extract, a few drops of green food colouring and a handful of chocolate chips. DENYER PLUMBING For chocolate ice cream, add in 2tbsp of cocoa powder (it will look light at first, but it soon darkens up while the ice cream is in the freezer) You can also buy some chocolate sauce and drizzle it through the mixture and on top as an extra burst of flavour.

News Report from Councillor Charles Chapman for Ryde South Email:- Charles.Chapman@iow.gov.uk | Mobile number 07970 009608 Well, it’s this time of the month again when I report back to you about topics that I believe will both interest and concern you and many which have in essence been formed from recent emails and texts from you, to the more mundane yet just as important of everyday issues. Island Roads and their workforce have, wherever they have been able, effected local repairs and more recently started work where such repairs, which could cause serious delays, in an effort that when thing return to more normal, to be ahead of the game. They have recently started weed spraying, and my Ward is ahead, my thanks! Most of the Ward has been sprayed and any help that residents can give by keeping areas clean, is most welcome, keeping social distancing, of course. Our refuge collectors are doing sterling work and although, not without its ‘hiccups’, Island tips are now open. Also, the ‘lessening of social restrictions’ has helped people generally. More recently, I have been contacted by people who are finding the restrictions causing a great deal of anxiety and loneliness. As those of you who read my page regularly are aware, loneliness, has always been of concern to me and encouraging neighbours to visit and introduce themselves to each other is, I believe, of vital importance to community cohesion. Please, please keep in contact with your neighbour and try, as things normalise, to keep in touch. 40 Acre field at Nicholson Road - Green Space - As you know a significant number of residents in my Ward and the adjoining Ward of Cllr. Michael Lilley have limited
or no outside space. Something which will continue to be needed by all residents, even after lockdown is fully lifted. With this in mind Cllr. Lilley and I are lobbying to get the above field open as quickly as possible, with pathways around the site and with residents and other major partners, getting the west side of the field, developed into a nature reserve. Natural Enterprise is to finance the opening up of the work. It is my understanding that ‘covid-19’ social distancing measures will be put into place and the High Street, (Ryde), up to Green Street/St. John’s Hill traffic lights, may well be made people friendly. As I understand it, will then come into ‘compliance’ with social distancing. We have got to find new ways of safely meeting each other, some will inevitable be by trial and error. Union Street and the Esplanade will give way to pedestrians; however, this will not impede vehicle access. Good news - summer plantings are going ahead! The display on the esplanade always fills my mailbox with positive compliments. So, I am looking forward to your many comments this summer. And hasn’t the weather been fabulous! Now I’ve said that it will probably rain nonstop, nevertheless, I hope that like me you are looking forward to summer. Lastly, a big thank you to Officers and volunteers of Ryde Parish Council, including volunteers at ‘Aspire’, for all their good work and for putting Ryde residents first. 15
Looking out for Hedgehogs... Some people are lucky enough to have a regular nightly visit from these adorable mammals. The island as a whole has a love for all wildlife and it is good to know that there is a specialist team of hedgehog carers for the island and their work involves offering advice, support and information to the public. They also take in injured or sick hedgehogs to help them recover before releasing them back to the wild. We have got together with Zoe from Save Our Hedgehogs Isle of Wight and Zoe has kindly given some advice below to ensure the ongoing protection of any hoggies we come across. What to do if you have a hedgehog visiting your garden? Always have fresh water available and you can also put out dry cat or dog food. Make sure any netting is secured as they could get tangled up. If you have ponds either cover over or add in a ramp for access in case they fall in. Have a messy patch as they love rummaging in undergrowth. Enjoy them from a far. If you think a hedgehog is in trouble If a hedgehog is seen in the daylight it might be in trouble, as they are nocturnal animals. They might be walking like they are drunk or unsteady – this is a sign of dehydration. A hedgehog walking with purpose might be a new mother moving a nest especially if she has been disturbed. Watch for signs she is moving her nest, she would be carrying nesting and then would transfer the babies. In the autumn the juvenile’s born will likely be too small to hibernate so they will need to come to us for the winter. Be careful when clearing your garden too as we see strimming injury’s, always feel around before gardening. If there is an obvious injury place the hedgehog in a light colour towel, in a high sided box and call myself or Jacquie on 01983 613145 and we will offer the advice you need. Save Our Hedgehogs Isle of Wight often attend events across the island and take hedgehogs along for people to see and their Facebook page has lots of helpful hints and tips and is the place where they provide updates of the hedgehogs they have looked after. https://www.facebook.com/saveourhedgehogs/
