Looking to sell your car? IW Trading Standards have a few scams for you to be wary of. • An email from McAfee stating that you need to update your Microsoft Windows version. Be very careful when you see messages purporting to be support for your device – don’t leap in and click on links. Think about it and chat with somebody who is familiar with IT. • A message from Whatsapp about updating your settings. Take some time to think about what you are doing and are you making sure that your account is protected and private. • Calls about your debit or credit card being used and large amounts taken. elcome to the July issue and thank you for picking up a copy of ‘your local community’ magazine.
At the time of writing we are having some great summer sunshine and it’s nice to see so many people out and about enjoying the island while still keeping social distancing practices in place. The beaches have been busy and some favourite picnic sites around the island have been bustling with families and holiday makers making the most of what the island has to offer. Our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section is being slowly reintroduced as a monthly feature, but the events are very much dependent on government guidelines. You will find this section on page 10. If you have an event happening in August, please feel free to email the details to islandmagazines@gmail.com. Inside this issue you will find the latest news and information for your area, our puzzle section, editorials and adverts from local businesses who all appreciate your support when using their services. I hope you all have a great July and hope the sun keeps shining and I look forward to catching up with you again next month.

News Report from Cllr Phil Jordan - Ryde North West. Tel: 07929 376375 | Email: phil.jordan@iow.gov.uk The plans for deck chairs and sun beds back on to Ryde beach moved a big step closer this week as planning for a container has been granted to be situated along the harbour wall to store the deckchairs overnight. Along with the deck chairs and sun beds you will be seeing two or three giant chairs along the Esplanade which are being used to promote the new deck chairs and are also for photo opportunities for residents and visitors alike. Half day and day hire will be possible, and we hope that lots of people enjoy and make use of them at very affordable pricing for everyone. Plans are also coming to fruition to provide water sport type equipment such as paddle boards and kayaks and we plan for those to be available for hire from around the harbour area throughout the summer months. Details of these services will be published shortly and in and around the beach area. Keep an eye out for their introduction and availability. I have recently been working on the problem of the closed car park at Appley due to the ongoing works by Southern Water which we understand is likely to stretch on until October. Obviously, with many visitors likely to arrive soon on to the Island, we are going to be under pressure for the increased parking need in Ryde. I am pleased to say we are in the final stages of creating a temporary car parking area in Simeon recreation ground for the summer months until Appley can open again. Final details are being worked out for entry and exit and I understand a temporary surface will be provided but I would
remind residents that this is a temporary arrangement under emergency needs for our summer season and normal service at Appley will return as soon as we can. Please bear with the temporary arrangements especially as there will be increased vehicle movements in places we would not normally expect or see. Work continues at pace for the High Street Action Zone (HAZ) and design and build plans are being produced for Ryde Town Centre by Hampshire Council who have great experience and knowledge in delivering brilliant public realm projects from inception to completion. Research into the provision of bollards at the beginning of the High Street is under way and we hope this process will eventually lead to those vehicles that currently ignore the no entry signs from being able to pass through the High Street and we can return it to a vehicle free experience as originally planned. Together with the eventual upgrades to the High Street and public spaces around the squares, better seating and greenery and improvements to the surfacing we hope to provide an area which is attractive. pleasant and encouraging for residents and visitors alike. Finally, this month, to remind residents that although there are relaxations in Covid restrictions we need to stay as careful and vigilant as we can under the wishes and hopes of all of us to get back to normal living. We have been very fortunate in many ways on the Island and as Islanders we know how special our place is but please do try to do your bit to help us on to a brighter future.

You can borrow books, use the computers and don’t forget we have a photocopier! If you haven’t used the library in a while come in and take a look, we have loads of new books! The Summer Reading Challenge will hopefully start up in the middle of July and this year’s theme is ‘Wild World Heroes’. We think it is a terrific theme, the best yet. It has been created in partnership with the World Wildlife Federation and illustrated by children’s author Heath McKenzie. So, look out in the library for more information. As always, we welcome donations of books (in good condition please). We know that many of you will have purchased books during lockdown and what better way to recycle them than to donate them to the library for others to read! We also are very happy to take donations of jigsaws. Please keep an eye on the local press and social media for any changes to the service. We are looking forward to seeing the library busy with readers and visitors.

News Report for Wootton Bridge from Cllr Daryll Pitcher Tel: 07511 045 145 | daryll@planetmail.net It has been a busy first full month for me as the Local Member for Wootton Bridge with many of you getting in contact to raise issues and ask for my assistance in resolving problems. I am happy to say that I have indeed been able to assist in resolving several problems, but many others remain that I am still working on. I am pleased to report that some resurfacing work was carried out on Church Road and that the gullies and drains by the lights were also finally cleared. This resurfacing, while welcome, has not solved the issue either at the end near the lights where the patching occurred or further down where nothing at all was done. I have reported several other potholes along the road to Island Roads so hopefully they will be filled in shortly. Again, this is only a temporary fix and in reality much of this road needs complete resurfacing. On this note there is bad news as I have had it confirmed that resurfacing works are not currently planned for Church Road nor indeed for either Footways or New Road. I will be pushing very hard for all three to be included in next year’s programme of resurfacing. I am currently dealing with an issue relating to waste collections in Woodside. It appears that bags are being left overnight at the Fiveways junction and that due to a lack of protection animals are getting into the sacks and spreading muck around. I am dealing with this with the Isle of Wight Council Waste Management Team and Amey, the waste contractors who have sent extra people up to clear the mess at least twice. Could I please ask that people who have to leave their rubbish here use gull 8
proof sacks to protect the bags? If you do not have one please get in contact with the Isle of Wight Council. I would also ask that people do not attempt to clear the mess up themselves if they see it. Doing so is unhygienic to you and unnecessary, please contact either myself or the Isle of Wight Council switchboard who will organise Amey to send a clear up squad. The Parish Council are currently looking at their signage at Wootton Station and Brannon Way. Both maps need updating and replacing and the sign at the station is no longer fit for use. These will all be replaced shortly with map holders reinstated also. I am pleased to (tentatively) announce that by the time you read this a part-time pop-up Post Office should be operational within the village. It will be located in the former Brannon’s Tearoom next door to the Parish Council Office on Brannon Way and should be open from 10am-12pm on Wednesdays and Fridays (subject to confirmation). I would like to thank Wootton Bridge Parish Council and Community Action Isle of Wight who have worked together to provide this solution. I know only two mornings is not much, but it is 100% more than we currently have and will allow those in our community who rely on the Post Office to be able to do so once again. It has been very difficult during the last few months managing without this service so to have it back is good news.

News Report from Michael Lilley for Ryde Appley and Elmfield 07769 551 578 | Michael.lilley@iow.gov.uk | www.michaellilley.uk July sees Ryde buzzing with activity! It has been a busy few weeks since the elections and I am not sure where the time is going. I hope everyone is enjoying the good weather and getting out and about. Although, I know the Government’s announcement that we have a further month (end of July) with lockdown restrictions might be disappointing, we should celebrate the amazing work of the NHS and the reality that the IW is close to having all adults vaccinated. My update hopefully provides some positives to look forward too. Fiver Fest in Ryde Shops! Ryde Business Association has been promoting local shops in June and the shops have been buzzing. There are new shops on Cross Street and really worth a visit, Her Whey and Islandia. The old Packs building is soon to open as the base of Ryde’s award winning and internationally renowned Carnival company, Shademakers, in July. There is currently an amazing window display and light show in the evening. Ryde shops are really coming alive and developing an enjoyable shopping experience. The Ryde Historic Action Zone and Historic England are investing in the Packs building along with investment in St. Thomas’s Church which should later this year be renovated and opened as Ryde’s youth centre. A feasibility study on the Town Hall will be out in July so the next steps can be made. West Acre Park Planning Application – 6th July The big issue for me in July is the planning application for 465 houses on Westridge 12
Farm. I am supporting the Hollidays who have worked the farm since 1966 in saving it. I will be speaking against the planning application and promoting the importance of preserving the farm on the 6th July at County Hall. Appley Sinkhole The eyesore of the sinkhole and Southern Water works still disrupts the Ryde beach experience and this will continue well past October. I am in talks with Southern Water about compensation for the local community, voluntary groups and businesses affected by the disruption. News on Ryde Arena There will be news about the Ryde Arena shortly and I am campaigning with other local councillors for revitalising the Esplanade and Beaches to celebrate our beautiful seafront as an important leisure and recreation area of the town. Deckchairs on Ryde beaches again Ryde Town Council has established Ryde Leisure and one of its first ventures is to put deckchairs and beach equipment back on our beaches and hopefully we will shortly see this. Roads in Ryde Appley and Elmfield Marlborough, Great Preston and High Park Roads have been in dreadful condition, and I have been complaining constantly to Island Roads. I am now assured High Park Road is to be resurfaced in August 2021. In July, Solent, Royal and Queens Walk are also to be resurfaced and details are going to residents. continued over the page
News Report from Michael Lilley for Ryde Appley and Elmfield Splash Park and Canoe Lake Local businesses came together to clean the splash park for free and Waterside Trust are now looking at getting it open shortly. I am meeting with IW Council officers and Waterside about getting a long-term sustainable plan for the Canoe Lake. Network Ryde Our Network Ryde youth service is developing a whole programme during the school holidays for Ryde young people and their allotment on Quarry Road is amazing. Links with Portsmouth University Ryde Town Council are having talks with Portsmouth University and ways we can work together. 11/12th September – Honouring Covid19 Heroines/Heroes and Car Extravaganza The vintage car extravaganza will be over 2 days this year and this year it will go alongside IW Day on the 11th which this year is celebrating all the Island residents who have gone that extra mile in supporting the most vulnerable during the Covid19 pandemic. Please take care and make sure you are safe. I send a message of hope that together we will come out of Lockdown and re-build our amazing town which we all love.
