June 2016
Dear Readers Welcome to the June issue of Island Magazines. I can’t believe that close to half the year has gone already. I’m loving these light evenings and there is no better place to be then here on the Island, especially if the sun is shining. We have had a few really nice hot days recently, as well as a few miserable ones too, but lets hope that once summer is finally here the sun will shine every day. The Island will be getting ready for the Isle of Wight Festival in June and there will be celebrations happening across the Island to mark the occasion of the Queens 90th Birthday. There are many other events happening too and you will find details of them all in the ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 12 and 13. If you are holding or know of an upcoming event please drop me an email so we can include it in the next issue. I hope you enjoy reading this months issue and catching up on all the latest news and information happening in the community. Until next month...

Tim decided to take his love of design and his hobby of gardening one step further and started offering a Garden Maintenance Service covering most aspects of gardening from planting out, grass cutting, hedge trimming, lawn care, weeding and so on and can also take on handyman work if someone asks. Break the Cycle Community Interest Company has been set up to help and support survivors of domestic abuse to move forward with their lives now they have escaped from an abusive relationship and are living independently. Weeks, months and years afterwards, a domestic abuse survivor, although away from the violence, can still live a life mentally imprisoned by the trauma they have experienced. Many reporting a deep sense of self doubt and feelings of uselessness and insecurity about the future. When talking to men and women who would potentially take part in the program, many spoke of a need for support to forgive themselves for being victims of abuse and overcome a lack of self worth so they were able to have a better outcome in life for not only themselves but their children also. The six module programme is designed to fill the gap between agency provision and social care. While external agencies support these men and women to build external aspects of recovery, ‘Mind the Gap’ will work with the internal aspects of recovery supporting participants to not only come to terms with their experience but live a fulfilled life past the experience too. The three directors, Maggie Currie, Kelvin Currie and Ian McLaughlin, aim to be working with a diverse range of men and women coming from all ethnicities and backgrounds. There will be no restriction to participating in the program for beneficiaries. We will be using a range of training material that complements each participant’s learning style. The sessions will also be interactive and engaging to allow the participants to learn through practice and experience vs theory.

Ryde District Heritage Centre Historic Ryde Society not only runs Ryde District Heritage Centre, but it also organises a Pub Quiz in Yelf’s Hotel, Union Street, on the last Thursday of every month, and every two months holds a talk on various local subjects, also in Yelf’s. These events raise money towards expanding the Heritage Centre into three more exhibition rooms, and, importantly, opening the very rare integral ice well to visitors. The ice well, possibly unique in the UK, was used to store ice imported from Norway and North America in the 1830s. The ice was used for culinary purposes, as well as for packing foodstuffs such as turtle soup, sent anywhere in the country, at 15 shillings a quart!

News Report from Cllr Michael Lilley – Green Councillor for Ryde East Ward Email: michaellilleyiow@gmail.com or call/text 07769551578 I am now getting a bit of swing in my new role as a local town councillor and starting to get involved in a range of issues and projects. The longer light in the evenings enables me to enjoy our beautiful town in all its summer glory. Surgeries - I am holding Ward surgeries every 1st Thursday of the Month at St. John’s Church Hall, High Park Road between 6.00 and 7.30pm. Next dates are 2nd June, 7th July, 4th August and 1st September 2016. Just pop-in if you wish to see me about local issues that are worrying you or where you have concerns. I may not know the answer, but I will support you to connect with a person or organisation that will hopefully help. I also have themed surgeries and the one on the 2nd June is any issue that involve neighbourhood policing and I have invited the local neighbourhood police team to come along especially in light of the recent robbery at the Co-op. Speed Watch – Fast Drivers watch out? On the 2nd June, Hampshire Police will be holding a Speed Watch survey on High Park Road. High Park is a long straight road in parallel to Marlborough Rd. Car drivers often use it as a way of avoiding the traffic lights on A4050 and cars are known to speed as high as 60mph. Speed Watch has successfully been tested in other areas and I have requested the police consider implementing it in Ryde East Ward. The scheme would involve local residents being trained to use speed camera equipment which could lead to drivers being fined. If you are interested in being a Speed Watch volunteer see: www.hampshire.police.uk/internet/adviceand-information/crime-prevention/communityspeedwatch or contact me.
a ward allocation of £250 to donate to local charities. I am nominating Ryde Food Bank an award of £100. See: www.isleofwight.foodbank.org.uk Westridge Farm and Hope Road – Public Meeting held 3rd May - There is a proposal to build 80 new homes on land rented by Westridge Farm on Hope Road in Ryde East. There was a public consultation meeting at Grace Church with members of Ryde Town Planning Committee on 3rd May. Over 100 people attended and a range of concerns were raised. Local people were concerned that with all the new proposed new house development there was enough being done to build local infrastructure such as improved roads, schools, GP surgeries to withstand the rise in population the housing will involve. No planning permission application has been made by developers and I will keep you posted, but it was good to see Ryde Town Council listen to the strong concerns and views of local people. Ryde East seems to get the brunt of the expansion of housing in the Town as stated as needed in the Town plan. According to a local amateur historian, there were once 7 farms in the boundary, Westridge is the last and one of the remaining few dairy farmers on the island. See: www.facebook.com/savewestridgefarm
Beach Watch – Ryde is the Town on the Beach and it is our treasured natural asset. As a Green and as Councillor with Appley Beach in my ward, I am keen to be actively involved in making sure it is clean and cared for. I have been appointed by Ryde Town Council as representative on the Isle of Wight County Council’s beach advisory committee but sad to Foodbank - Grace’s Church on the Marlborough hear in the last year it has not met. Road is home to Ryde Foodbank and I wish to praise the local people who volunteer there and Ryde toilet’s including the one at Appley Beach provide a real life line to people who would go are now under management of Ryde and are open. The Town Council agreed to pay for hungry without it. As a local councillor I have

News Report from Cllr Michael Lilley extra cleans during events in the summer. The Ryde Environment officer visits the toilets regularly to make sure they are clean. Please call: 01983-821000 if you have any concerns about toilets, vandalism on beach, dog-fouling, and litter. A new beach cleaning contract has been awarded by Isle of Wight Council and Ryde Council voted to provide funding to make sure it is a Bronze standard service for the next 12 months. The Town Council has also agreed to support a proposal for a local company to apply with Visit Isle of Wight for funding for an International Beach Sport Event in 2017 from European Union which will include beach volleyball, football, rugby and cricket. I asked about the involvement and accessibility of all the community in the event and I was reassured the event would be inclusive. Hope in Crisis - Redesign of Mental Health Services on the Island - 1 out of 4 of us in the community experience depression, distress, isolation, despair and anxiety at any one time. This could be triggered by relationship breakdown, job loss, long-term unemployment, serving in the armed forces in a war zone, worry about other family members and many other life events. On the 4th May, I hosted a meeting at St. John’s Church in Oakfield, how the Islands mental health services needed improvement and redesigned to help support people more effectively in times of crisis. It was a lively meeting with 25 attending. A major call was for a Crisis House in the community as an alternative to a psychiatric ward at Seven Acres nest to St. Mary’s hospital. This event was part of a whole programme of public meetings being held in May and June on the future of health and social care services on the Island.
