Dear Readers Welcome to the June issue of Island Magazines. Now that the local elections are over we need to focus our attention on the general election which takes place on the 8th June. Don’t forget to vote and have your say. You will find the regular informative news report from Wayne Whittle, who has kindly agreed to continue writing them each month. Wootton residents can now get a full update of news and information happening in their area as Barry Abraham will also be supplying a monthly report. Summer should be kicking in now and we have been very lucky so far as there have been some really nice days. The Island has many beautiful places to visit and Ryde is a favourite with many - the beautiful sandy beaches, the picturesque parks and seafront, the town with its local and unique shops and the many eateries in which to relax and indulge. I hope you enjoy this issue and please keep using the services of our advertisers and let them know you found their information here.

News Report from - Cllr Wayne Whittle, Hunters Way, Binstead Hill, Ryde. Email wayne.whittle@iow.gov.uk Tel 07792 670771 Twitter @RydeAbide I was pleased to be re-elected as County and Town Councillor for Ryde North East and would like to take this opportunity to thank all who turned out to support me on May 4th and via postal vote. There were many winners and losers on the night at the count and the result has given my group a mandate to govern our County Council for the next 4 years. We have had a rather nice couple of weeks weather and then some rather unseasonal windy weather that had blown the sand around the ward, I’ve asked Island roads to check the gullies and unblock where necessary before it’s washed into the lower drains. The beach cleaning contract started on the 1st of May with a machine clean every other day and a daily litter pick, the machine clean helps put the sand back on top of the stones after periods of heavy wind blows the sand off. I have recently sent the tree officer to Harcourt Sands after passing residents raised concerns about tree felling on the site, the officer confirmed all felled trees were perfectly legal and part of the agreed plan. The hotel plot at the front shore side of the site has been marketed for 350k with planning for a 60+ bedroom 5 star Hotel. The whole site is being cleared ready for building to commence, I welcome this much needed regeneration project as this greatly missed accommodation has blighted the 6
Ryde economy for many years and been an eyesore and fire risk. Let’s hope things get moving soon with a hotel provider as it’s probably the best spot on the island for a picturesque wedding reception. In my last report I incorrectly stated that a new Harbour masters office would be provided by Ryde Town Council but it’s actually Isle Of Wight Council who have the funding for it in the Capital program and not forgetting the funding for the Environment Agency Flood Prevention Works are also contained there in. I will now start pulling in updates on the Environment Agencies work plan and time line for provision of the necessary engineering for this project. The Ryde Slide is now confirmed and booked for Sunday the 16th July in Union Street, tickets will be a straight £10 each for a definite seat as we have now dropped the lottery. You can purchase tickets on our website at rydeslide.uk you can also sponsor the event via a link on the same website, but don’t delay as we only have 400 tickets left. The slide event will be bigger this year so don’t miss it.

Summer Solstice If like me you are just getting into the swing of summer but haven’t yet had the chance to fully enjoy the longer, lighter evenings, then I suggest you get your skates on because on Wednesday June 21st its Summer Solstice. Even though this midsummer date is when we get the most daylight of the year, it also marks the time where the days start shortening ahead of winter. The midsummer date is set based on the sun’s tilt towards the sun, which hits its maximum at 23° 26′ and falls between June 20th and June 22nd in the northern hemisphere. The ‘longest’ day of the year marks the middle of summer because the tilt of the Earth’s axis is most aligned with the sun, providing us with the most daylight of the year.

News Report for Wootton Bridge Town and County Councillor Barry Abraham Email:- barry.abraham@iow.gov.uk Firstly can I thank all the people who voted for me but I represent everyone in the village whether you voted for me or not and I will do my best for everyone. This is not my first time on the Isle of Wight Council, I represented Wootton Bridge from 1998 until 2013 when I stood down, not really expecting to stand again. So what changed my mind? I have struggled for years with my weight and 10 years ago was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and started taking medication. The pounds piled on and 2 years later I had to start injecting myself with insulin. My blood sugars did not improved, and my insulin level kept going up. When I reached 19 stone my knees were in a bad state and when I visited the diabetic nurse, she was concerned about my blood sugars and said that I needed to control them better with insulin. At this point I decided that I needed to get myself in order, the nurse asked “did I really mean this and I was offered the chance to go to a diet meeting on a 12 week course. This course I took up and still regularly attend weigh-ins and stay to the meetings afterwards, because I know if I do not do that, I will start to gain weight again. Now two and a half years later and four and a half stone lighter, no longer on insulin, my knees are much better and I have more energy. During my campaign, I met a lot of people with various concerns and views on what is happening around Wootton and the Island in general. One of the problems with being a councillor will be how to act on the issues raised, because clearly some of the views were in direct conflict with other ones expressed, so I guess I will not be able to
please all the people all of the time. The roads, despite the improvements that have been delivered by the PFI and Island Roads, still remain a concern. New Road in particular has to be one of the worst on the Island yet to be upgraded and I will pursue this issue with officers and Island Roads to find out when this is likely to be upgraded and will report it back to you. Another concern raised, is the lack of civil enforcement of dog fouling and littering that takes place around the village. Unfortunately there is a very small minority of people causing quite a large problem and I will be asking the IWC to look into this issue and see how we can best tackle it. It might be that we have to speak to national government to get more flexibility with the police to work better with the council and the parish. We have been lucky not to have had any large scale housing proposed around Wootton as some areas around the Island have and I hope this remains the case as I believe it offers very little to the community other than putting pressure on services and roads. To finish, a couple of weeks ago I was walking in our fields along the mill pond opposite Lakeside and was really surprised and delighted to see an Osprey fishing in the creek. Did anyone else see it? I know at least one other person did see it so I know I was not seeing things! Barry Abraham. 15
