Sharing a home offers a common sense answer to twin challenges facing all communities – finding or keeping a home. BIG Lottery funding has created the opportunity for Islanders to benefit from this simple approach, which has been up and running in other areas for many years. Here, Age UK Isle of Wight is the torchbearer. The charity’s HomeShare project provides a matchmaking service which brings together householders who have spare space and home seekers who are looking for fresh and flexible alternatives to costly rental or purchase. A simple exchange sits at the heart of HomeShare – housing for help. Householders with a spare room and shared facilities open these up for sharers who, in return, provide an agreed amount of assistance every week with routine household tasks (not personal care) and also contribute to living costs. Every home share is different – shaped to the specific needs and expectations of householder and sharer. HomeShare Co-ordinators help them both to negotiate the details of how they will live together, help one another and get along with one another. The Co-ordinators are also responsible for recruiting, thoroughly screening and carefully matching both householders and sharers, for everyone’s peace of mind.
Established schemes, elsewhere in the UK, Europe, and North America where Vermont’s homeshare has been running for 30 years – have proved that home sharing is a good fit for many circumstances. Householders, for instance, may be finding their homes are becoming oversized for their needs – families fly the nest, relationships may have broken down, or support from relatives isn’t an option. Chores may be difficult or simply leaving too little time for enjoyable activities. While downsizing could relieve the pressure, it may also mean departing loved homes and known communities. For home seekers, sharing can provide flexible, short or long-term time-out from rental or purchase. It creates an opportunity to consider options, save for more permanent solutions, wait for social housing to become available (sharing won’t affect ranking on the homefinder register), or even serve out a probationary period for employment before putting down roots. Beyond the obvious practical benefits, home sharing yields many unexpected gains - peace of mind, new friendships, enjoyable company, reduced concerns and the increased happiness that comes from sharing and helping one another out.
To see how it’s already working visit www.homeshareiow.org or catch up with the HomeShare Co-ordinators at various drop-in events over the summer (details on website), or call Age UK IW on 525282.
Welcome to the June issue of Island Magazines and thank you for picking up a copy. Since the last issue we have had some wonderful weather and like many I have been enjoying the great outdoors. The Island looks beautiful bathed in sun and let’s hope these warm days continue. Picnic and barbecue season is officially here and I’ve been contacted about the amount of litter that has been left after such events. Please either take your rubbish home or find a bin of which there are many about. Nothing looks worse than a beauty spot or beach littered with left over food packets, drink cans, bottles and general waste. June is looking to be a busy month for events on the Island and you can plan how to spend your time by going to the ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 10, 11 and 12. If you want to promote your upcoming event please email us the information so we can share it in the next issue. I hope you all enjoy this issue and I look forward to catching up with you again next month. Best wishes
Debbie

News Report from - Cllr Wayne Whittle. Tel 07792 670771 Email wayne.whittle@iow.gov.uk Twitter @RydeAbide The environment Agency presented their plans for the flood wall they will be erecting along the west side of the footpath in Simeon Street recreation ground in August. It was explained that subject to planning it is intended to have a red brick finish and flood gates that will only be closed during heavy rainfall events. The current works on the Harbour beach will be concluded on the 18th July and the contractors have agreed to let their fencing be loaned to pride and used at their event on the 21st July, the fencing will be removed after, leaving the beach free and back to normal for the summer season. The redundant outfall pipe will be removed from the beach when they return after the season. I had an interview today with a south coast radio station about the flood works on the beach and made a point of stating that only 5% of the beach is quartered off leaving 95% of Ryde Beach open for business during the works and concluded the recorded interview by saying if you live in Portsmouth and have a bucket and spade best bring it to Ryde as we have enough sand for everyone. I was disappointed to hear about the Harcourt Sands developers (zero c) walking away, although not surprised after years of inaction from the owners. I can remember attending the Zero C public consultations in Seaview (where Harcourt Sands sits) with then fellow Ryde Town Cllr the late Dave Knowles (one of Ryde’s greatest champions), we heard attending 4
residents express deep concern about losing the camp and how their fear of any housing becoming second homes making it empty (like Seaview) during the winter. We then proposed a hotel be part of the newly proposed development and were told by Zero C that they don’t do hotels, so it was recommend a subsidised hotel plot be allocated on the site towards the solent side and put on the market to potential hotel providers. This hotel site was finally put up for sale last year as a 5 Star hotel building plot and apparently marketed without success (maybe they advertised it in the Beano) I saw it advertised online but not sure how comprehensive the marketing campaign was. The last I heard was plans had been proposed for a restaurant with self catering units over as an alternative, wasn’t too worried about this as the original plan for a hotel was to try and provide a way to let out second homes for the owners in their absence as previously Harcourt Sands had been able to accommodate block bookings for groups and football teams etc and this would have been a way to continue to offer block bookings. The truth, is that time has moved on and today any second home that’s only partly occupied can be let out on Airbnb by the owners themselves (good for Island tourism) so was happy to see quality housing down there as even it’s sewers and surface water did not impact the Ryde North East flooding problem, as it accesses the Appley pumping station from the east.

News Report from - Cllr Wayne Whittle continued I’ve asked that the regeneration team now pursue a meeting with the owners to find a way to quickly bring this long overdue project forward as it’s such a shame to see a beautiful part of Appley coast fenced off and neglected in this way for far too long. There has been quite a lot of vandalism at Appley of late with wooden beach steps and palm trees broken and burnt on the beach, please do call 101 and report incidents to the police if you see them as the statistic helps to get more policing at that end of Ryde and hopefully a mobile CCTV camera. Hopefully when Beach Soccer move in for the 5 month season it will help to occupy youth with more purposeful ways to use their energy.

News Report from Ryde Town Councillor Karen Lucioni Email: karen.rydesouth@mail.com | Mobile 07506930109 www.facebook.com/yourvoicecountsryde Onwards and Upwards together As I embark on the second year of this four-year term serving residents, I hope you have found my articles both interesting and informative. On the 6th July Ryde Town Council are holding an open day for residents to meet their Town Councillors and ask them questions. Unfortunately I am unable to attend due to work commitments, however I would like to reassure you that I am contactable all year round, by phone 07506930109, email karen.rydesouth@ mail.com Facebook Cllr Karen Lucioni and website www.karenlucioni.co.uk. I have, as many of you know, considered myself to have an open-door policy with you, and very much welcome you to contact me anytime if you need my support or questions answered. I offer my commitment to listening and representing you in the most transparent and open way. I look forward to hearing from you throughout this coming year. At every Town Council meeting I am given the opportunity to ask questions of the Police, and if there is a question you would like me to ask on your behalf then let me know. Many of you have asked me in the last few weeks about the shingle that has built up on Appley Beach. I am assured the beach is mechanically raked every other day, with litter picked, and beach bins emptied - Starting various dates April/May and then continuous throughout the Summer. I am 6
advised that the raking activity will assist in the reduction of shingle. Any worries or concerns do let me, or the Town Clerks know. The Bus Shelter Isle of Wight would like to appeal to those who can commit to supporting the project. Training is provided with a focus on Safeguarding. To find out more please visit www.thebusshelteriow. co.uk also please let me know if you can spare anytime to join the volunteer programme. Due to a lack of interest, unfortunately I had to cancel the minibus trip for the elderly as the numbers did not make this a viable event. I will be talking with others to see how we can progress this further in the future. Thank you to those of you who did contact me. The Local government boundary commission is carrying out a review of the Isle of Wight and it is important you have your say. Tell them what you think. The review will agree new council ward boundaries across the Isle of Wight. Consultation closes on the 9th July 2018. For more information and interactive maps visit; www.lgbce.org.uk or if you would like to write to them contact me and I can give you the address in full.

News Report from Wootton Bridge Councillor Barry Abraham 07800736557 | Email:- barry.abraham@iow.gov.uk I cannot believe that I am writing my June report already. The May weather has not been too bad. As I write this, Walk the Wight has taken place and when I went to the Blackwater country store, there were hundreds of people crossing the road from St. Georges Down, some in fancy dress, it really is good to see so many people stepping out for such a good cause as the Hospice.
The parish council is just about to commission a housing needs assessment for the village, this will help to find out the likely need for future house numbers. Every resident should receive a questionnaire seeking views so I hope you will be happy to take part, the parish council is hoping for a good response to make it a meaningful process.
I attended a meeting recently with South West trains, listening to their ideas for the future of Island Line. Whilst I am an infrequent user of the service, as most residents must be by all accounts from the amount of subsidy the line receives from central government and it is the drive to reduce the subsidy that has brought about the need for change. There was talk about returning the line back through to Newport which of course would mean Wootton might once again have a “main line station. I am not sure how practical this might be but who knows. As a young person I watched the last train come through the line with my cousin who lives in Station Road.
The litter bin by Kennedy Close has been replaced, the previous one had been vandalised and was removed by Island Roads.
I am meeting Woodside residents with Natural England to listen to a presentation on their plans for the proposed coastal access. I will feed back next time. Nothing to report on planning, I continue to meet officers on outstanding applications. I meet regularly with planning officers as cabinet member for Planning & Housing. The Island planning review is still ongoing. The public consultation has been put back from June until October, this is an important date to remember as this will set where development is likely to take place over the next fifteen years. 14
We are lucky to live in such a beautiful place as Wootton but it never ceases to amaze me how people continue to throw their litter out of the car. I have mentioned this before but still it is done. I sometimes wonder what their homes must be like. I have litter picked through Firestone Copse Road and an hour later sandwich packages have appeared along with drink cans and sweet wrappers. On a more pleasant subject, as you may remember, I do like to keep my eye on what happens around the farm from a natural environment perspective and spring is the most glorious time of the year for me. The whitethorn is now out in full bloom around the hedges and the larger trees that I have allowed to grow around the farm. The Oak trees, because of the cold early spring, are quite a bit later this year and are only just starting to come into leaf. The swallows have returned and are starting to get their nests ready for their first clutch of eggs. Please do not forget if you have an issue with the council, please get in contact either by phone or email.
The Island’s Gardening Competition and Awards - 2018
The 2018 WIGHT IN BLOOM competition is now open for entries, and you have until midday on the 30th of June to enter. There are great prizes to win, including Liz Earle products, Red Funnel ferry tickets, gift vouchers and gardening tools. The overall winner takes home the Peggy Jarman Trophy, which was introduced last year in honour of the original Wight in Bloom coordinator If you’ve never entered the competition before, make 2018 your year. There are eleven categories within Wight in Bloom, including small front gardens, commercial categories, best window box, schools entry and water feature. Judging will take place in July and the shortlisted finalists will be invited to attend a free awards ceremony in September with prizes presented by Alan Titchmarsh, patron of Wight in Bloom. This year the judges will be awarding bonus points for greener gardening. You may choose to make your garden wildlife friendly, recycle, or reduce plastic in your garden. The keen eyed judges will be on the look out for great ideas put into action in this year’s competition. There are three ways to register your entry: 1..
