Island Hares Once again Island Magazines is thrilled to be able to feature such an amazing photo on the front cover and if you haven’t already guessed the photographer is of course ‘Hare Whisperer’ Nick Edwards. Nick isn’t just known on the Island for his passion of these mesmerising animals as earlier this year another of his amazing hare photographs made him a finalist in the huge and prestigious Sony World Photography Awards 2019. Out of over 326,000 entries from 196 countries, Nicks Island hares were chosen to be in the final selection, handbook and exhibition! What an achievement and well done Nick. They say that all good things come to those who wait and you will often find Nick waiting patiently at dusk and dawn in various locations across the Island ready to capture the hares in their natural surroundings. He is such a regular visitor to these locations that it almost seems on some occasions that the hares are waiting for him to give him exactly what he wants and this month’s front cover star certainly didn’t disappoint with this pose!! Hares aren’t the only topic of Nick’s amazing photography skills and his website www.wightseen.co.uk is home to his collection of pictures of varied subjects captured here on our beautiful Island. His prints are also available to purchase via Available Light Gallery in St Thomas Square, Newport.
Another month has flown by and here we are with the June issue. As I write this introduction the sun is shining and I really hope that June is the start of the summer season and we get to enjoy many more sunny days here on the Island. I have already had my first picnic of the year at the beach, it was lovely and sunny one moment and the next it was raining, thankfully not heavy but I was in a difficult conundrum; do I pack up and run to the car as quickly as I could or do I ride it out and get wet. Well, I did the latter but after 20 minutes I gave up! This months front cover is amazing and all thanks to local photographer Nick Edwards. You can read all about Nicks passion on page 2. Keeping on the wildlife theme, on page 10 you can read all about helping to save hedgehogs here on the Island. June is a busy month with events happening across the Island and you will find our ‘Dates for your Diary’ on pages 12 and 13 and don’t forget Father’s Day is on Sunday 16th June. I hope you all have a great month and I look forward to catching up with you soon.

News Report from Cllr Wayne Whittle. Tel 07792 670771 Twitter @RydeAbide E wayne.whittle@iow.gov.uk Work has started on the children’s splash park at the Eastern end of Canoe Lake, where the Waterside Trust are installing a new water feature that has been funded by Ryde Town Council. It’s a large overhead bucket that fills, tips and discharges it’s contents on the children playing below, it should prove a great addition to the play area within the splash park.
There will also be the Elite soccer “Beach Soccer Championships” at Appley Beach on the 8th and 29th of June. The New Carnival company - Mardi Gras on the 29th June and ReVamp Festival at Panfield School on the 30th June. So a busy month to come.
Let’s hope we have a nice long warm sunny summer again this year so our children can enjoy it.
I was pleased to support the successful election of Ryde’s new Mayor Cllr Lilley and Deputy Cllr Axford at the Ryde Town Council AGM.
The Flood Wall is now completed in Simeon Recreation Ground, some trees and shrubs have been planted along parts of the wall
Let’s make that much needed Ryde Place Plan so we can finally win some government funding for Ryde.
Some residents raised concerns about the lack of watering, noticing the wilting branches. I’ve informed the environment Agency along with fellow residents so hopefully a more regular watering rota can be put into place. Don’t forget to come to Ryde where you can observe the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings that begin on the 5th June and run till the 9th where 2 million tourists are expected to attend across the Solent in Portsmouth. There will be various associated events taking place for the whole week, with some attended by the USA President himself. Project Opera Diva’s Gala at Ryde Methodist Church on the 1st of June. 4

News Report from Ryde Town Councillor Karen Lucioni Email: karen.rydesouth@mail.com | Mobile 07506930109 www.facebook.com/yourvoicecountsryde Please look out the Ryde in Bloom entry form, which is available from Ryde Town Council. As chair of RIB I look forward to coming to see your beautiful gardens and inviting the winners to the awards in October. Be proud of your garden and let us celebrate it with you. It can be small or large garden and I would love to see more shops in our town get involved. I am honoured to have attended Oakfield Youth FC awards, how I enjoy those afternoons. I started giving this award 4 years ago. This club has grown 4 times bigger in that time, but one thing is for sure, this is a great club full of commitment from players, family and friends. All the coaches are volunteers and do a wonderful job. The respect that this club has for each other is a joy to witness and is something very special. If you would like to help the club, even if it is helping with putting out corner flags, please contact the club or give me a call on 07506930109. Through my work on the Sensory impairment working party I asked to be set up with a motion I brought to full council last month and sitting on the Ryde access forum, I actively campaign to make sure people with physical disabilities are not at a substantial disadvantage to others and that we as a 8
caring town take reasonable steps to avoid these disadvantages. I will continue to support this. As I progress my work, I will update you all. I am lucky to be coming into my 7th year as your town councillor for Ryde South. I have thoroughly enjoyed every minute and will continue do so. My work is dictated by the needs and wants of you, the residents and businesses. I encourage you to keep talking with me and let us collaborate to make our town all you want it to be. I am available to you and acknowledge emails, calls, and social media or letter requests within 48hrs. The new “We are watching you” campaign posters will start appearing soon. Most of us respect where we live and work. These are to remind those who don’t to please start. They will be about Dog fouling and fly tipping, both a big issue for our town and island wide. If you would like to have a poster for your window of either issue, then please do let me know on the above number.

Fancy something a little different? Why not try your local community radio station.
Vectis Radio broadcasting on FM 104.6 and online www.vectisradio.com/listen is a distinct and different community radio station based in Newport. From their Riverside Centre studios they broadcast a wide range of music, chat and information aimed at the local Vectis Radio on FM 104.6 community. The music mix includes many and online tunes that aren’t played on mainstream radio www.vectisradio.com/listen stations. In particular the station plays local music at least once an hour during the day and welcomes local bands/musicians to submit their tracks for inclusion on the ever growing local music playlist. Vectis Radio is run entirely by volunteers, every penny earned from advertising and fundraising is required just to keep it operating. Vectis Radio is also home to the award winning 4Ps Training Course which enables young people, many with additional needs, to improve confidence and communication by using the basic principles of radio. More details of this course can be found at www.4PS.org.uk. If you are interested in finding out more the station holds a regular open/coffee morning at it’s studios on the first Saturday of the month.

Save our Hedgehogs Isle of Wight We are hedgehog carers for the island and our work involves offering advice, support and information to the public and we also take in injured or sick hedgehogs to help them recover before releasing them back to the wild. Hedgehogs are at threat of extinction with numbers declining rapidly so helping everyone be more aware is really important. If you want to encourage hedgehogs into your garden make sure you have small square entry points, always have water available and you can provide dog or cat biscuits too. If you think a hedgehog is in trouble. Place in a light coloured towel in a high sided box and call Jacquie or Zoe on 01983 613145 who will offer the advice you need. Some key things to be aware of. If a Hedgehog is seen in the daylight it might be in trouble, as they are nocturnal animals. They might be a new mother moving a nest especially if she has been disturbed. Watch for signs she is moving her nest. If not, it probably needs checking over. In the autumn the juvenile’s born will likely be too small to hibernate so they will need to come to us for the winter. Be careful when clearing your garden too as we see many strimming injuries, always feel around before gardening. If there is obvious injury or you are just not sure always call us so we will take them in. We visit vets if need be and rehabilitate them often releasing them back to where they were found. We attend events across the island and take hedgehogs along for people to see and our Facebook page has lots of helpful hints and tips and is the place where we provide updates of the hedgehogs we have looked after. 10
News Report from Wootton Bridge Councillor Barry Abraham 07800736557 | Email:- barry.abraham@iow.gov.uk I start my June report with congratulations to Wootton Community Primary School, on their latest Ofsted report which is deemed good in all areas and good in overall effectiveness. The previous inspection was the school requires improvement, so much hard work must have taken place by all concerned to make such a dramatic change. Having served as a governor for several years at the school I know how it can seem a thankless task at times, giving up evenings to attend meetings that can last for hours and there is no financial reward, but with this result none is needed. Well done everyone. Last month I wrote about the Mill pond and the lack of sluice gates. I wrote to the Environment Agency and I have received a response. It appears that one of the sluice gates came off in December last year and the Environment Agency will not replace it but they are not the owners. The Mill Pond is privately owned and the sluices are part of that land holding. I have asked for a meeting with them as yet I have had no response. Sadly the losers at the moment is the wildlife. As I look out over the pond most seem to have disappeared. Park Road Bridge is going to be upgraded, whilst I am not against the bridge being upgraded I am concerned that safety issues are not being addressed. With a busy cycle track crossing it, the speed of traffic is an issue, it is not obvious to strangers that it is there. Speed is also a problem, by the bridge itself by the Palmers Brook industrial estate and Care in the Garden nursery. I have arranged to walk the road with council staff and residents, to look at the issues in early June.
This morning I awoke early and could not get back to sleep so went for a walk to see the cows. The sun was still hidden behind the horizon and as I opened the porch door I was met with the dawn chorus of birdsong, there really can be no better sound and right at the front was a blackbird on a branch of silver birch. They have such a beautiful song, it was worth getting up so early just to listen to such a wonder of nature. One thing that I still have not seen is the return of the swallows, usually in the early morning by now they can be seen flying low over the fields and over the backs of the cows, picking off the low flying insects which are in plentiful supply. I truly hope they turn up soon. I cannot believe that such a beautiful small bird is killed to eat as they migrate from Africa in some countries, it really is about time these barbaric practices were confined to history. Nothing to report on the planning front at the moment. Concerned residents have raised possibilities of an applicant coming forward on Station Road, I have spoken to officers and they are unaware of anything at this time. Because of the European elections the Isle of Wight Council has had to cancel meeting because of purdah, much needed discussions cannot be made. Sadly Cllr Carole Wolton has resigned from the PC. Carole has been a hard working councillor and I for one am sorry she is leaving the PC and wish her well for the future. Please do not forget if you have an issue with the council, please call or email me. 11
