Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) As from 25th May, Islanders will be able to take more items to the HWRC’s for recycling, but trips must still be essential (if your waste or recycling cannot be stored at home safely or disposed of safely by other means, such as your kerbside or bulky waste collection or garden waste subscription). Vans, trailers and pickup trucks can access the sites, with the appropriate permits.

Hello and welcome to the June issue of Island Magazines. We are still in lockdown, but restrictions are lifting gradually, and we are free to spend more time outdoors exercising while enjoying the beach, countryside and parks etc. but we must stick to the 2 metre social distancing rule. Times are hard for many at the moment, especially charities, and on page 17 you will find how you can help the Isle of Wight Cats Protection and their fluffy little guests. There are so many ways in which you can help. To keep your mind active take time out and enjoy our puzzle section on pages 10, 11 and 12 and find the answers to last month’s puzzles. Since being on lockdown I have been baking more than normal and one of my favourite guilty pleasures is ginger biscuits. Forget shop brought as these are so easy to make and they taste amazing - see the recipe on page 13 and please feel free to email me how you got on and some pictures. This month’s front cover picture really caught my attention and you can find more details on page 8. Inside you will find the usual news reports from local Councillors, features and articles and of course some great advertisers who are offering a wide range of services. I hope you all have a great month and although this issue is online only, the July issue will be back in print and available to collect from distributors across the island. Take care and stay safe.

News Report from Wootton Bridge Councillor Barry Abraham 07800736557 | Email:- barry.abraham@iow.gov.uk a lot of businesses struggling to survive and face a very bleak future. The council was given £64 million to give out as grants for businesses paying business rates and depending on the amount of business rates paid, can claim a grant of £10,000 or £25,000. Not all businesses have yet claimed and are being contacted by the council. Unfortunately there are some businesses that fall through gaps and get no government support and the council is looking at how best it can support them. There is concern as lockdown continues On the Island we have been testing the NHS for families and the possibility for App, thousands of islanders have signed up domestic abuse and the impact can be so and that is a good thing. If you are like me, devastating and we all need to be alert to it, no one deserves to suffer it alone. Help I hate having my phone in my pocket and is available through the council, remember leave it on the kitchen table, in the car or I am here to help if all else fails, do call in the tractor cab on the farm and over the last six weeks I have only left Wootton once me and I will get you support. to go to Newport to pick up some electric cable to do a repair and I never got closer to I have had residents contact me regarding anyone than 10 ft so the app has not had to the fence being erected on the corner be used by me. What does make me laugh of Rectory Drive, the land is in private though is so many people are constantly on ownership, the planning office are aware of the situation and are offering advice to their phones, using Facebook or Twitter, the owners. and they have no idea if they are social distancing or not when walking on the As I write I have been made aware of pavement. soil being dumped on Woodside beach, I have alerted planning and enforcement The council has now put in place a system will be paying a visit. It is an offence to to be able to have virtual meetings using Microsoft teams, the first planning meeting dump like this even if you own the land and honestly why would anyone think it is using this system takes place on the 2nd acceptable? June, there are no Wootton applications on the agenda but I will watch the meeting Please do not forget if you have an with interest. I meet via Microsoft teams issue with the council, please give me a with officers and councillor colleagues telephone call on 07800736557 or email: regularly and it is incredible to think that barry.abraham@IOW.gov.uk. anyone anywhere in the world can take part in meetings. I meet regularly with the council cabinet and it is clear there are Another month of lockdown is now behind us and I am beginning to think that it is never going to end. It is like Groundhog Day and the news on the television and papers make you want to jump in the creek. Do you remember the good old days before lockdown when there were other things in the news to occupy our minds? Would we leave the EU by the end of January and would there be a deal? Come to think of it, that’s a bad example, but it would be nice to know what else is going on in the world.

News Report from Ryde Town Councillor Karen Lucioni Email: karen.rydesouth@mail.com | Mobile 07506930109 Throughout the period of lockdown local residents have continued to assist those in need across Ryde. I wish to personally thank all those who have volunteered to be part of Ryde Town Council initiative with over 200 wonderful residents also playing their part. I think one thing we have learnt from this sad and unprecedented time is that ‘our community cares’ and I hope that the lessons learnt by myself and others are not forgotten but utilised and enhanced. Government, councils, and others have successfully pulled support together in a matter of weeks. Whilst working in the community in my keyworker role, I have noticed wonderful displays of art/craft in gardens, on doors and in windows, proving that talent and imagination has not been left to one side during lockdown. As many of you know I am active on social media and through this I keep in touch with many of you. A new phenomenon is the arrival of artistic contributions. I am now bringing forward an idea whereby works of art and craft during this period within Ryde can exhibited for the rest of our community to see and appreciate. I would love all age groups to be involved, this can include stories, poems, carnival pieces or anything you have created in your time in lockdown. please contact me as we need a real 6
community-wide contribution from the young to the not so young. I am happy to say that the planting in the town has taken place and is it is looking wonderful, I also know that Mike Fitt (Ryde resident and Chair of the Royal parks Guild) has pulled together with a group of volunteers to assist with the planting on the seafront so that the plants are not lost this year. Thank you, Mike, and everyone who volunteered for this, you are all amazing. The one fact I am certain of, is that throughout this time we have shown our resilience and I am proud to be part of our wonderful Ryde community. I know that we have missed many of our summer events this year, however I look forward with optimism that in the future these vibrant and exciting times will come again for us to share. If you would like to contact me please always feel you can contact me via social media by using my name, or via the contact details above.

Is it safe to come out yet? This month’s front cover star will bring a smile to your face, just like it did to me. I think there are many captions that could fit this photo but I feel that if cows could talk and with nothing but the Coronavirus being in the news they would just want to know ‘Is it safe to come out yet?’ This great shot was taken by Gemma Hobbins who was out on some daily exercise around Newbridge and she just happened to glance up and saw this cute face looking back at her. Thankfully, Gemma was quick enough to grab her camera and get a shot as she flew by on her bike.

Rustic Ginger Biscuits I call these rustic as there is no piping or cutters used and will therefore all be slightly different and you can make them as big or as small as you like. You can easily increase or decrease the quantity of ground ginger used depending on personal taste. The recipe uses 2 teaspoons, but I normally use 3 and a bit as I do like a strong ginger flavour. Ingredients 113g soft brown/golden sugar 100g butter or margarine 2 tablespoons of golden syrup 2 teaspoons of ground ginger 1 teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda 227g self raising flour Heat oven to 190°C. In a saucepan gently stir and warm the butter, syrup and sugar until butter is melted and well mixed. Remove from the heat. Sieve together flour, bicarbonate of soda and ginger and stir into the melted butter, syrup and sugar mix. Form into a soft dough. Place small balls (about 1 teaspoon of mix) onto a greased baking tray. About 12 per tray and flatten slightly. They flatten and spread during baking. Bake for 12 minutes or until the colour is right for ginger biscuits and the top looks slightly rough. Remove from oven and cool slightly on the tray then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely. Enjoy with a nice cup of tea‌.

News Report from Cllr Wayne Whittle. Tel 07768 118766 Twitter @RydeAbide E wayne.whittle@iow.gov.uk I’m writing this report during week 9 of lockdown so forgive me if anything I write is already out of date by publishing, as things tend to change very quickly. At the IW Council the once two weekly cabinet meetings have increased to three per week as we have had to make swift decisions to keep up to speed with daily changes that see our officers and directors re-assigned and working hard delivering Government authorised support initiatives and by delivering things in a new way locally that support our residents, businesses and charitable sector, via hubs, business grants, housing, mental health, care etc. Leisure centers, museums, libraries and many Council facilities have closed, with parking becoming free in many locations. I was pleased to see the tip finally re-open. In Ryde the Town Council team have worked long hours with Aspire and volunteers, delivering medicine and food to support our local residents who have found themselves confined to their homes. Zoe Thompson chair of Ryde business Association has delivered regular information bulletins and updates supporting and advising our local business on obtaining Government small business grants and employee furlough support and keeping them up to date on frequent changes in Government policy, and has been working on a recovery plan for our High Street and Town via temporary interventions to aid safer social distancing measures in getting around town as more
of our non-essential retailers and businesses begin to open. I’m proud to have witnessed everyone pulling together as a community to help one another through these challenging, dangerous and uncertain times. During lockdown, whilst unable to work weekends anymore, I’ve had the opportunity to walk around Ryde and it’s surrounding countryside and really appreciate what a beautiful place we are blessed to live in, the air and water has been the cleanest and clearest I’ve ever seen. To say the way we live our life has changed is an understatement and I feel that some of the new ways we have found to interact and work (if we can) will become the norm, like Skype, Teams and zoom online meetings and working more from home. I was pleased to hear about new Government funding to encourage more cycling and walking and hope we can make good use of it on our Island and Town. The sand is finally being cleared from around the Harbour arm along with gardens, roads and pavements, sand will be dragged back from the slipways and sea walls in an attempt to prevent it blowing from the beach again, obviously the North Easterly and North Westerly winds don’t help Our lovely Ryde flower beds should be planted by the time you read this, as some lockdown restrictions are loosened continued over the page

Life Before Lockdown!! I am at the stage where I refer to my life ‘before lockdown’ and life ‘during lockdown’… and I am shocked by the changes I have automatically made Let’s go back to ‘life before lockdown’ for a minute - I went about life at quite a fast pace, everything I tackled was at 100mph. My life back then was very structured, planned and did not really have much room for change. I thrived on being busy, running around, completing multiple tasks kept me going, made me feel alive. I didn’t have time to sit down quietly for a cup of coffee, I even found it hard to sit and watch thirty minutes of TV. Basically, I couldn’t sit still, and I couldn’t entertain myself and I found my own company rather boring!!! Added to this I was a terrible worrier, I worried about everything, I worried about things that didn’t need worrying about. Now let’s go back to the 23rd March and Boris’ announcement which immediately sent me (and nearly everyone else) into a state of panic. The first thought I had was what am I going to do for 12 weeks, then I thought about not having an income and then my biggest fear was worrying I was going to catch the virus. I lived in a panic fuelled shell for a little while and I was no longer in control of my own life, or rather that is what I thought!! The first couple of weeks of staying home and worrying about everything were hard and I knew I couldn’t go on like this so something had to change. I remembered something that my friend kept telling me which I had never fully been able to take onboard before. She said “worrying doesn’t actually solve anything, it won’t change the outcome and some things in life just can’t be controlled or changed so why waste your time” (thank you Maggie for these wise words). I thought about this and yes Maggie was right, I needed to ease up and at least try and enjoy the journey as I couldn’t change anything the Government had decided and worrying about the virus wasn’t going to stop it in its tracks. Fast forward 8 weeks and I am still at home. I now potter, I have started growing my own vegetables, planting flowers, baking, and I even sit in the garden and just watch the world go by. I plan meals, and I make time for a coffee and don’t mind sitting quietly, I’ve even found that my own company isn’t as bad as I thought, in fact when I talk to myself I sometimes say some funny things!!! My life has slowed down, and I am a lot less stressed. The only structure to my day is I always get dressed and put on all my make-up. I can while away many hours without actually doing anything… It’s a surreal life we are living in at the moment but myself like thousands of others are getting through it hour by hour, day by day. I’m looking forward to life after ‘lockdown’ and I plan to take my new skills with me and choose to live life at a slower pace and I might even stop and smell the roses. There are different paths to take in life and I was on the rough, pot holed road but now I’m ready to travel down the newly resurfaced road where I can admire the scenery at the same time. At least I feel I can take something positive from this pandemic.
Please Help... Kitten Food and Litter Appeal Five weeks ago in the middle of lockdown staff at the Isle of Wight Cat’s Protection arrived at the centre to find seven kittens without a mother in a cardboard box in the carpark. They were all very underweight and were only around four weeks old. The smallest weighed only 306g. The centre staff took them home and have been hand rearing them. It was an up and down journey as the littlest suffered from dehydration and she very nearly didn’t make it. She needed hourly feeds but she pulled through. Today, they are now all fluffy, bouncy and lively eight week old kittens!! Tearing about the house playing. They are all eating kitten food and are all using their litter trays which is amazing. Of course, this means that the centre are getting through a lot of kitten food and litter. Combined with all the other kittens in foster they are currently dishing out a staggering 68 meals a day to ensure these little fluffballs have full bellies and never feel hungry Please, please help them by donating kitten food and litter or money donations. They have a drop off point outside their main gate which is monitored and for those that can’t get out to the centre they also have an updated amazon wish list if you would like to donate that way: https://www.amazon.co.uk/hz/wishlist/ls/4Q6UKAO2H7GN or donate via justgiving.com/campaign/IsleofWightAdoptionCentre These and other kittens and cats will be up for adoption shortly so don’t forget to check out their website www.isleofwight.cats.org.uk during June. They will be operating a hands free homing process within strict Covid-19 guidelines.
