Dear Readers Welcome to the March issue which looks set to be a busy month, first we have Mothering Sunday on the 6th March and then on the 25th March is Good Friday and the start of Easter. Both of these events are early this year and lets hope we have good weather for both and that Spring will have finally arrived by then. The weather over the last month has been a good mixture of wind and rain. Our lovely Island took a battering from storm Imogen recently but we survived and surprisingly there was very little damage. In this months issue you will find the ‘Dates for your Diary’ on page 4 and 5 and we have teamed up with Lost Pets IOW in an attempt to reunite missing pets with their owners and you will find more information on this on page 7. The pets missing are from different areas on the Island so please spread the word to family and friends. We have some great advertisers and please keep using their services and remember to tell them you saw them advertised here. I hope you all have a lovely Easter and remember to eat plenty of chocolate!!!! Until next month...

News Report from Cllr Ian Stephens - Ryde West - Lantern Cottage, The Orchard, Pellhurst Road, Ryde, Email:- ian.stephens@iow.gov.uk Mobile:-07970 009523 The Isle of Wight Council (IWC) budget is extremely challenging, and this in turn puts pressures on the local Town and Parish Councils (T&PCs). Cuts made in support grants from the government have caused a total rethink of local services and facilities, which can affect the delivery of support to them. Indeed the IWC has had to put total emphasis on the services driven by legislation and the so called discretionary services/facilities are under threat. This puts pressure on the T&PCs to take over various services such as public toilets, and public realm which includes areas such as flower beds etc.

Report from IW Councillor for Ryde North East - Wayne Whittle, Hunters Way, Binstead Hill, Ryde, PO33 3RP. Tel 07792 670771 E: wayne.whittle@iow.gov.uk Twitter @RydeAbide At the recent Ryde Flood Group Meeting and prioritising opening (even if in part) members were told by Ian Miller from the hopefully by November/spring at the latest. Environment Agency that the favoured scheme option to solve the Monkton Brooke flooding This meets with the wishes and needs of was completed and an open day was planned. our local residents and wider community, Residents were invited to go along and look at the plans that show how the new outfall pipe will be diverted into Ryde Harbour and were invited to give their views, issues, ideas and concerns to the Ryde Flood Group and attending Agency’s. The Scheme once approved will need a 600k contribution from the IWC assisted by the Southern Regional Flood and Coastal Committee backed by local Levy funding. Ian said he was confident of funding support and the scheme implementation should start in 18 months time. The new EA scheme is designed to cope with the once in a hundred years climate change flood risk. Even with the new outfall diversion in place the Monkton pipe will only be able to cope with 50% of the water in the brook during times of heavy rain so upstream ponding and flow reduction methods accompanied by emergency barriers for Simeon recreation ground and higher Brook walls should hopefully deal with the remaining flood water. I and Cllr Fuller (executive Member for planning & licensing) have met with the Mr Spiker owner of the Royal York Hotel to express our deep concern and find a positive way forward, we had a long frank and meaningful discussion and he has assured us he is now forging ahead with re-developing 12

the sooner this Hotel is tastefully updated, occupied and put back into good working order the better.

After 2 years of closed Roads and digging its fantastic to finally see the Memorial Gardens & Canoe Lake coming back to their former glory. Canoe Lake subsidence repairs and water level control outfall pumping station works are now finally completed, the surrounding footpath is now completely resurfaced looking clean and tidy. The Memorial Gardens at the Eastern end of the Strand that now house the massive Southern Water flood storage tank are being re-turfed and landscaped, new wooden benches have replaced the old cold steel ones and a large mound of earth has raised as a central focal point to be planted and the commemorative plaque will be put back. It would be fitting to have a local reopening and Royal George memorial remembrance ceremony once its all done. I have been working with Aspire Ryde community Group and Cllr Jordan as an attempt a getting upper Dover Street under the same parking order as Lower Dover Street in order to free up some parking spaces for the Aspire users and residents. I did a door knocking survey last year with the MP in the surrounding district where local

residents expressed frustration in the lack of parking spaces due to ferry commuters vehicles filling the streets. We have contacted the Executive Member putting forward our local needs and concerns and he has assured us that once the new parking strategy is in place we will be able to contribute our local priorities into the wider ensuing consultation. Cllr Jordan has assured us the publication of the new parking strategy is only weeks away.

Movement Growing Against Oil and Gas Extraction on the Island Licenses awarded for oil and gas drilling on the Island In December 2015 a license was awarded to UK Oil and Gas Investments (UKOG) and Solo Oil to explore for oil in a 200 sq km area on the Isle of Wight. This decision came just days after the close of COP21, the historic United Nations Climate Change Conference that resulted in a historic agreement by 195 countries to tackle climate change. To keep to this commitment and safeguard our future we must keep fossil fuels underground, meaning no new oil and gas wells, not here, not anywhere.
