Welcome to the March issue of Island Magazines. March signifies the start of Spring and lets hope we start seeing some better weather, perhaps even some sunshine! It looks set to be a busy month with plenty happening across the island and you can find details of events listed in the ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 10, 11 and 12. On Sunday 11th March is Mothering Sunday and towards the end of the month on the 30th is the start of Easter. Unfortunately we lose an hour of well earned sleep in March as the clocks go forward the last Sunday of the month, this being the 25th but on the other hand we will start to see the lighter evenings which is always something to be cheerful about.

News Report from Councillor Charles Chapman for Ryde South Email:- Charles.Chapman@iow.gov.uk | Mobile number 07970 009608 At last, it’s good to see the dark mornings and especially the dark evenings are beginning to recede. As I look out it’s nearly five o’clock and it’s still light, light enough to have a walk by one of my favourite places in Ryde, along by the boating lake. Mind you it’s still raining, and we appear to have had more than our fair share this winter! Never- the- less, we live in a beautiful place, one where, by and large, we share values of family, friends and community.
The Internet cafe is now open at 147 High Street Ryde with the catchy name of 147. Students and youths can use the computers, access help and talk to professional staff. It’s amazing. Tell your kids and young people about it, as with my theme of communities, this is where they often can begin. You can make friends, forge partnerships and begin friendship bonds, which can last a lifetime.
My post is full of letters asking ‘how do we protect our community?’ I know what they mean. In Ryde, we are still engaging with one another, and a smile and a good morning to neighbours, strangers and friends still goes a long way. Each news letter I ask that we ensure that vulnerable people who live in our street or next door are ‘looked in on’ and visited, numbers of you do just that. Thank you. Our schools are still friendly places and our younger children collected by parents or friends. This is how we protect the word ‘community’ and ensure that it’s ‘real’ and that it is still alive and breathing!
Like other areas of the Island, focusing on regeneration, Ryde is not being left out. In my ward, with your support, is the regeneration of the old youth club. If you have ideas, let me know, as it is still flexible as to what we can achieve. Once again I am plugging, building communities. As we are and can only be involved in one, if we all participate.
Early in March from the 2nd to 4th we need volunteers in the Great British Spring Clean campaign, led by ‘Keep Britain Tidy’. This is in partnership with Amey, our waste collectors. To take part please email: waste. contract@iow.gov.uk. Also you can help to keep our streets clean, by reporting fly tipping, and lorries etc. which are shedding waste. As a council we are trying to promote recycling, although we appreciate that we have a long way to go if we are to catch up with our European counterparts. Norway recycles 98 per cent of its bottled plastics!
Something, I really enjoy and which makes my job worthwhile. Not only attending the annual Foyer Awards but being privileged in giving out the Award Certificates. Over the years more than 1,000 young people have been supported to build their independence and resilience. Sovereign plays a major role in this and I know, how hard their staff work.
4
Sovereign Housing are aiming to secure funding for estate improvement. I shall of course, on your behalf support their endeavours. We have enjoyed their support in the past in getting things done.
Notices: Southern Water are renewing the mains in Ashey Road, a huge task. Thank you for your patience and help. St Johns Road and Hill, much needed new man-hole covers are being installed. Island Roads are working on Pot Holes.
Report from Councillor Charles Chapman Continued Please contact them if you find one or two! More work will be done in Bennett Street. Please bear with us, thanks. Time to say goodnight, as the evening is now darkening. So in line with my theme of communities:- Don’t forget Mothers Day on the 11th as you only have one mother. Such occasions bring people together. On the horizon is Easter, please, it may be easier to shop on line, but remember our shopkeepers. They are at the heart of our communities and need your support by using them. Please shop in Ryde. The same goes for our cafes and pubs. Please support our local facilities, as they do so much for us, including, providing much needed employment. I’ll sign off now and wish not only good health and happiness, but a joyous Easter and Spring. You know that you want a better understanding of your situation, to work out what really matters and to make the right choices for you. I am Maggie Currie. News Report from Wootton Bridge Councillor Barry Abraham 07800736557 | Email:- barry.abraham@iow.gov.uk The days are at last starting to get longer, although the weather has remained wet and cold, but looking across the fields next to the Mill Pond, it does not affect the Canada and Brent Geese eating the grass and as far as the Curlews are concerned, the wetter the better as they probe the ground for worms and other things. The hedgerows are starting to show signs of return to life. The hazel catkins are starting to appear and I have found last season’s hazel nuts that have been eaten by dormice, squirrels and mice. The Great British Spring Clean takes place in early March and is something I strongly support and the more of us that take part, the cleaner our community can be but it would be really nice if the trash was not discarded in the first place. Through the middle of January all the electric poles on Lushington Hill were replaced. I did not know that there were so many and the old ones were so bent over. But my concern was the likely traffic delays, and I have to say the contractors carrying out the work have done an amazing job, there were little traffic hold ups and the work was completed by the dates on the roadside signs. I am unaware of any outstanding planning decisions being made. The report on the Plane Tree has been received by the Isle of Wight Council, I have met with officers but I await their final recommendations but remain of the view that the tree can be saved with a slight reduction of the crown. I have asked Island Roads for an update on
New Road to try and pin down a start date for the improvements, I have received a reply but as yet no firm date to start the work. As soon as I know I will report back to you. Along with Island M.P. Bob Seely I met with Woodside residents to discuss how best to protect the area from over development following the spate of planning applications at Woodside and is starting to have an impact on the beauty of the area. The north coast of Wootton is an area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB). It was decided to try and move the boundary inland to cover much more of the land south of the existing boundary and west to incorporate the land at Palmers running down to Kings Quay. Whilst this will not stop development it would mean greater consideration has to be given to impact on the landscape. The track that runs across the Recreation Ground from the High Street, has become very untidy with the limestone surface breaking up and stones are being thrown into neighbouring gardens. The Parish Council and myself are meeting with the Isle of Wight Council with a view to getting it upgraded with a more stable surface. It is now a century since the campaign by the suffragette movement to get woman the right to vote and it brought back to me when it first stood for elections and how many older lady residents would tell you proudly that they always went out to vote at every election because their mothers has campaigned to get them the right to vote and they would never forget that! Please do not forget if you have an issue with the council, please get in contact.

News Report from - Cllr Wayne Whittle. Tel 07792 670771 Email wayne.whittle@iow.gov.uk Twitter @RydeAbide I attended the packed “Wight we Want Ryde regeneration workshop” at Ryde Castle, it was good to see our local community coming out en masse to give their time and views on key Ryde issues that were raised at the first session. The Environment Agencies flood prevention engineering works are to start on the Harbour Beach this spring and will finally solve the problem with the sand blocking the Culvert outlet, which will be bypassed. The plans were presented to our local Flood Action Group at the Simeon Arms by the contractors and Environment Agency who explained the benefits of a spring start rather than Autumn. Other than the fact it’s better to get the flood protection in earlier there is also a wider window of opportunity available for the engineers to complete the job in one session. As I write this the Shelter at the bottom of Dover Street is still fenced off due to a long running spate of late night antisocial behaviour and vandalism, the Police and Community safety team are working hard with the youth to educate them against any further repeated instances of vandalism and disturbance at the location. Would like to see the Shelter reopened for all to enjoy in the coming month. I’ve been thinking about ways of creating alternative energy absorbing after school activities to occupy our youth, working with fellow members and officers, along with Luke from Beach Soccer to enable a five month of the year permanent soccer pitch to be set up 8
annually on the usual site just East of Appley Tower. We are currently working with planning to come up with a low perimeter barrier fence to mark the pitch and stop dog fouling. Once set up Luke hopes to have youth events every weekend during May, June and July and FREE coaching and playing Monday, Wednesday and Friday for kids and the women’s games on weekdays over these months too which he wants to see grow, It is hoped there will also be the opportunity to have volleyball and other beach favourites on the site. Ryde Town Council have opened their own Youth Club in the High Street opposite Iceland it’s called “Network Ryde @147” and is well staffed by a team of Youth workers, equipped to offer a drop-in centre weekdays from 3pm till 6pm and evening sessions planned, attendance has been steadily growing since it opened. The flags along Ryde Harbour are looking rather weather beaten and frayed almost as if they just survived the Alamo. I’ve asked leisure services for replacements as this should be a very busy year for Ryde Tourism. Wearing my Regeneration hat the team have bought into a social media campaign conceived by Polly Barnfield OBE called #WDYT or “what do you think” that will assist retailers in Ryde and Newport to set up a media presence to attract shoppers to the Town by computers and mobile phones. The local launch event took place at Ryde Castle on the 8th of February and if our local
News report from Cllr Wayne Whittle continued businesses adopt and use the initiative, it could increase footfall by up to 22%. The daily changes in digital influence will be carefully measured for both the Town and its retailers, let’s see if we can beat Newport in attracting numbers. On your marks... HAVE YOUR SAY ON PARKING SCHEME GUIDANCE - A public consultation is underway on guidance to improve residents’ parking on the Island. The IW council is asking Islanders for their views on the draft policy to request resident parking schemes. The aim of resident parking zones is to improve parking conditions for local residents and which already exist in various areas across the island. However, there is currently no policy or guidance for dealing with requests for new schemes and your local Ryde North East thoughts will help inform that. IW Council has prepared draft guidance for the introduction of resident parking schemes (RPS) which, when finalised, will clearly set out the process to request an RPS, the criteria for establishing the demand and ensuring that zones only proceed where they will deliver a benefit for residents. Here’s the address of the online survey: www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/BVMG7FJ Consultation started on Monday 5 February 2018 and closes on 5pm on Friday 16 March 2018.
