A very warm welcome to the March issue of Island Magazines and thank you for picking up a copy. It looks set to be a busy month, starting with Shrove Tuesday on the 5th and then Mother’s Day, and don’t forget the clocks go forward one hour on the last Sunday of the month. Although we lose a valuable hour in bed we will start seeing lighter evenings. Our ‘Dates for your Diary’ on pages 10, 11 and 12 are packed full with events happening across the island during March. I always like to give a small mention about the weather but I’m really at a loss of what to say this time except did you enjoy the small scattering of snow we had a few weeks back and do you think we can expect to see more of it like we did in March last year or shall we keep our fingers crossed that the cold weather has been and gone.

News Report from - Cllr Wayne Whittle. Tel 07792 670771 Twitter @RydeAbide E wayne.whittle@iow.gov.uk The environment Agency Flood prevention works on the Harbour beach are almost completed, the redundant outfall pipe has now been dug up and removed and the harbour wall has now been put back together, with only rubble left to remove along with some fencing.
IWC will be conducting resident surveys in streets that have applied.
The flood wall in Simeon Street recreation ground is being clad with bricks and a solution for surface water flooding has been found.
I will be defending my title as the Islands fastest pancake flipper at 11am on Tuesday 5th March at Grace Church, Marlborough Road, Ryde.
Six swans were found dead at the Canoe Lake over a period of 2 weeks pre Christmas and DEFRA were notified and sent a specimen, many residents were concerned by this and had asked to be advised of the outcome.
We have to flip as many pancakes as we can in 5 minutes to raise money for the Isle of Wight Foodbank, hopefully there will be many other flipping Councillors.
I was pleased to support a successful RTC vote that provided funding to help Aspire continue its good work in our community.
Wayne
The response from DEFRA was that they had discovered the swans died from overfeeding and pointed out that their natural food is grass, weed etc and not bread or grain. I know we all like to take our children down to feed the ducks/swans (most end up feeding more seagulls) but I guess by coincidence too many people did it at once during early December thinking that the birds needed food. The good news is no swans have died since then. Was pleased to see parking charges will not be applied to Union Street and hope the Isle of Wight parking review outcome supports a continuation of free parking zones. 44

News Report from Councillor Charles Chapman for Ryde South Email:- Charles.Chapman@iow.gov.uk | Mobile number 07970 009608 Welcome and thank you, once again, for reading and responding to my news report. It makes my job as a County Councillor and Parish Councillor worthwhile! My eldest grandson, who is at the Isle of Wight College, and incidentally is thriving there, asked why am I a Councillor when I am ‘way past’ retirement age? I answered by saying that I work to put back ‘something’ into the area where I have lived for the greater part of my life, and to repay to others for the assistance and support that I received when younger. Unfortunately, not always as successful as I would hope and most often with compromise, like Ryde Hospital ( for those who remember it), bus routes which were to be scrappedsaved, green areas and parks, which for those of you know me, are, I feel essential to our quality of life, and countless other items which impact directly on the quality of our lives. Especially: areas like, our Ryde town centre, which provides employment and ‘life’ to our Ryde community. Mentioning green areas: the Arc at Oakfield: Repaving works to the solid areas now completed to paths and play areas and the bench bases have been installed. New benches will be in place for the Spring. Somewhere to go: Visit the bold colour areas, which now painted, makes a striking impact. Artecology is now on site and the Bio Totems will be finished soon, depending on the weather. The Wildlife Trust, has its apprentices working there, with emphasis on preserving and creating natural wildlife areas. Mentioning the weather: I trust that you all enjoyed the snow at the end of January/ February. Many thanks to Island Roads, who were out gritting in all weathers and did a good job. I have been touring around the Ward with them, looking at damaged 6
kerbs, footways and lighting. Once again I rely on your good services in informing me: know of any breakages, vandalism and/or deep pot holes in your street, let me know? My list was quite comprehensive and I have checked that the work has been marked up to be done. British Legion: as you are probably aware I am President of the British Legion Ryde and as such, I presented the awards to sea cadets and was able to present a cheque for £100 towards their funds. Sea Cadets: Anybody interested, joining or being a volunteer, we are in Station Street, Ryde, all welcome. My hobby horse - Ryde Football Club: I was able to present a cheque for £100 towards their funds. My thanks to all those, both adults and young people, who support the Club and have made it such a success. Remember to visit your neighbours and any local persons who are on their own. The worst of the weather is not over yet and the hospital has reminded me of the number of people, both old and young, with broken bones and bruises through accidents and falls. They have asked me to remind you all to take extra care during the bad weather and dark evenings. Flagged up is the Bikeability programme: which is being delivered on behalf of the council by Wight Cycle Training, under their ‘Shift it Scheme’ for further information please visit www.wightcycletraining.co.uk and /or https://bikeability.org.uk/ It’s a worthwhile scheme which attracts many young people. Like many of you, I am looking forward to lighter evenings and Spring being in the air. It’s scary how quickly time flies.

A Journey of Discovery for Everyone by Nickie Short My name is Nickie Short and I teach yoga on the Isle of Wight. I have lived on the Island for 16 years with my family and I love dog walking, swimming in the sea and sharing this wonderful part of the world with my husband and friends. Since leaving school I have spent 30 plus years working with people with a wide range of physical and mental health problems, learning difficulties, physical disabilities and those who are generally finding life challenging. I have been practising yoga for 30 years and teaching for almost 20. When working with groups or individuals I take time to determine where they are now, where they want to be and how helping them work through the challenges from A to B. Although everyone is different there are many common themes: people lack awareness of their physical needs, lack self confidence, want to find some ‘peace’ or contentment, want to feel less stressed, get anxious, experience pain (physical and emotional) and lack of sleep to varying degrees.

News Report from Wootton Bridge Councillor Barry Abraham 07800736557 | Email:- barry.abraham@iow.gov.uk I cannot believe that I am writing my March report and by the end of the month it will mark a quarter of the year has already passed. The big February decision was setting the annual budget for the next financial year, as I write, all the consultation work has taken place and all that now needs to happen is to have the council meet with reams of paper to read and make the final decisions. I have been attending meetings since last September looking at what is the best way to deliver services with much reduced finances. My main priority has always been to protect as best as possible the most vulnerable in society. New Road refurbishment part one has now been completed and it does look very smart after so many years and I hope residents are happy with the end product, sadly the refurbishment part two from St. Edmunds Walk to the unadopted part of New Road I have nothing to report on but I continue to keep raising it with Island Roads. Last month I mentioned about looking out for older and vulnerable people during the colder weather and I would urge that we still do this. The weather in March can still be some of the worst of the year. If you have concerns about a resident and you are unclear what to do, please do raise it with me and I will make sure that help and advice is given to any person. I am pleased to see that the former Hamiltons shop has opened as an Italian restaurant and I wish the owners of “Cebo all the best. It is good to see our High Street retaining all of the shops, albeit not the traditional type of businesses. 14
One piece of sad news is that Party in the Park will not be taking place this year, and it is down to lack of volunteers. It has been run by the same people since it started at the Queens Golden Jubilee. So if you enjoy this village event and want to see it in future years, please come forward and speak to Liz at the Parish Office. I am sure she will welcome you with open arms. Last month I mentioned that we had not seen the geese that usually turn up for the winter, I am now pleased to say that they have turned up on the Mill Pond and between 200/300 of them are now happily grazing our fields adjacent to the Mill Pond. Planning at Palmers Farm is still waiting to be determined, the application will be determined by the Planning Committee. I will inform residents when this will be happening but it is likely to be sometime. The one thing as we come to this time of year is the lengthening daylight which is most welcome. It is also great to see the snowdrops, crocus, daffodils and other spring flowers blooming once again. In the hedgerows the hazel is starting to produce catkins, a sure sign that spring is not too far away and the road verges will offer up some fine displays of wild flowers. The council is looking at how it can reduce verge cutting to encourage these plants and have even better shows. Please do not forget if you have an issue with the council, please call or email me with your concerns.
