Spring is just around the corner... although the island has taken a battering recently with storm Ciara and storm Dennis the temperatures have been very mild up to this point. For weeks now there have been signs of Spring with daffodils and crocus already in bloom in gardens and hedges. Mothering Sunday is on the 22nd March and don’t forget the clocks always change on the last weekend of March, so this year, that falls on Sunday 29th. With the warmer weather coming soon seasonal businesses will soon be opening their doors to locals and visitors. The island will start coming alive with local events. Our ‘Dates for you Diary’ section on pages 12, 13 and 14 will keep you busy and there is something for everyone including regular community events or one-off social engagements.

News Report from Wootton Bridge Councillor Barry Abraham 07800736557 | Email:- barry.abraham@iow.gov.uk As I write my report for March the sun is streaming through the window and our two cats are stretched out on the carpet where the sun’s rays have created a warm patch. We have just had Storm Ciara and Storm Dennis. It does make me smile that we need to name a storm. I have to say that I do not understand the logic of it, other than you know who to blame if the tiles blow off your roof or your garden fence is now in a garden three houses away. Afterwards, like all vandals, they create havoc and just disappear never to be heard from again.
Some of our village trees have become festooned with plastic and other waste. It is such a problem despite all the talk of using less packaging, everything seems to use so much more, this is not helped by online shopping. I recently bought a household appliance that duly arrived in a brown box. On opening it there was another brown box inside, on opening this box there was a smart box with a picture of the product and of course opening it up, there was all the packaging protecting my new product that was wrapped safely in a plastic bag, all this for a new kettle that was a I have again been in correspondence with replacement for one that only lasted for Island Roads trying to arrange a meeting a few months. Catching Our Breath By Jessica Garbett Yoga Therapist – Yinspire Yoga Therapy “I’ve been so busy, I just need to catch my breath” How often do we find ourselves saying that or something similar? Our nervous system hasn’t evolved to handle this pace of life – our threat response system treats the sound of a text message the same way as the roar of an attacking animal, and respond to someone cutting in on us at the traffic lights the same way as a threat on our life. This sense of “always on” can become overwhelming and leave us tired and stressed, maybe depressed or anxious. Into this melee comes our breath – pausing for a few moments and noticing how we are breathing, slowing our breath down and bringing it down from our ribs to our belly, gives us that precious time to literally “catch our breath” and regulate our responses to life around us. As a Yoga Therapist much of my work comes down to teaching simple breath practices to support the nervous system. Used for 20 minutes or so a day these are proven to improve the resilience and functioning of our nervous system, and improve our emotional health (Benson, Relaxation Response 1975). If you struggle with issues like Chronic Pain, IBS, Back Pain, or Stress, Anxiety and Depression, then Yoga Therapy may well be able to help – visit www.isleofwightyogatherapy.co.uk to learn more.

News Report from Councillor Charles Chapman for Ryde South Email:- Charles.Chapman@iow.gov.uk | Mobile number 07970 009608 What a wet winter! My family and I thought that it would never stop raining and many of you have told me that you have felt the same. Believe it or believe it not, such weather conditions cause havoc to our pavements, roads and drains. So please, have patience if you are avoiding damaged areas, mud embankments, new holes in our roads where you live or work. To be ‘effective’ conditions have to be right to implement lasting repairs. Even the grass areas, especially those adjacent to pavements, have suffered! On walking my Ward this month, I noticed some street signs that are not so secure, as they were last month, where the rain has washed away around their base loosening the foundations; mud instead of grass on embankments and our many newly planted trees have been adversely affected. Any help that you can do outside your homes to help maintain our immediate environment would be appreciated, after all we all share the same walkways, roads, grass areas and enjoy looking at and rambling on our very wet green areas. My focus this month is on gambling. Whether it’s the dark nights or the continuing wet weather but I have had a number of concerns from folks worrying just how easy it is to play on line, buy lottery tickets, spend money on gambling machines, sometimes using rent money and in some cases even their own children’s money to gamble. Then going to use pay-day loans and credit cards as solutions to debts caused by gambling, but the high interest rates charged only makes the situation worse. So much so, that it is putting some families into long term debt. Several of my younger 6
constituents have told me that in addition to the ease in finding ways of gambling, has come the ease in borrowing money from friends, using their student loans and any other ways they can raise the funds to continue gambling. This is not just your neighbours problem or the ‘guy’ down the street, we all get dragged into it whether we are the user, family or friend or to the long term the damage to our communities, in which we all live. Gambling is beginning to affect more and more families and it’s a bit like an unwanted growth it’s just keeps on spreading and needs to be stopped. There is help and nobody is on their own! We need to eradicate the stigma linked to people who gamble to excess. What can you do to advise somebody in need: get them to phone Samaritan 116 123 (24 hours) or www.samaritans.org Or contact their GP for further advice. Something that we can all do, is write or contact our MP and/or any other interested parties to voice your concerns about the growth in gambling and lotteries. The increase in advertising on tv and on the web has reached alarming proportion, we all now need to voice our concerns. In addition there has been a proliferation of lotteries. Some very genuine, raising money for specific charities, others including our own National Lottery paying shareholders an excellent return on our money. If we must have all these additional lotteries surely they should be non profit making, continued over the page
News Report from Councillor Charles Chapman for Ryde South with all proceeds going to ‘good causes’ and not into shareholders pockets? What I am hoping for, is that by writing this today to emphasis that gambling is just as damaging to our communities as drugs and violent behaviour. It is a hidden menace which affects so many people, both young and old. We have secured from the council monies for ongoing ‘Rights of Way programmes’ which will aid the ‘Arc’ programme at Oakfield and by linking ‘Rights of Way’ areas across our Ward. Ryde has been selected for a front line service to improve public access. The new help centre at Ryde will be based at Ryde Library, with changes to public spaces by providing a check in service and a designated area for more individual advice and guidance. It’s long been a moan of mine that the cost of travelling to Newport, both in time and money, is unacceptable. This centre will help all of us who live and work in Ryde. After all Newport may be our Capital, but Ryde is its ‘Gateway’. There are many other changes in the pipeline which I will try to update as and when. Nothing I can add to, other than to wish you good fortune in the coming months and ask you to look out for your family, neighbours and friends.

When looking for inspiration for this month’s front cover, I immediately thought of the saying ‘Mad as a March Hare’ and it was only natural that my first thoughts turned to local ‘Hare Whisperer’ Nick Edwards to use one of his many amazing hare photos. News Report from Cllr Wayne Whittle. Tel 07792 670771 Twitter @RydeAbide E wayne.whittle@iow.gov.uk The sand build up that’s been causing problems for vessels entering and exiting Ryde Harbour will be removed, the cause of this problem remains debatable. Some say it’s the new outfall pipe inside the Harbour some say it’s the rising sand. I think everyone who’s lived in Ryde for the last 30 years or more will know we have collected sand since the Harbour was built in 1990, at first it was an improvement because before the Harbour was there the beach sat 12 to 15 feet below the sea wall. The harbours surrounding sea defences (gabions) were standing about 15 to 18 feet high above the beach sand when the project was completed, if you look at the harbour and beach today the sand is less than 18 inches from the top of the Harbour and Esplanade seawalls The sand now blows from the beach into the Harbour, Eastern Gardens, Esplanade and Canoe lake, filling road drains and causing highway flooding during times of heavy rain. Years ago the Isle of Wight Council tried carting the sand from the Harbour beach and depositing it on Appley beach to cover the shingles, it remained there for less than 3 months before it was once again washed back down to the Harbour beach.
a sandbank extending North West towards the pier head. I fear if we do not start removing some of the beach sand it will inevitably render our Harbour redundant as the sandbank continues to extend further North cutting it off. I have discussed this issue with the Environment Agency and Isle of Wight Council who are now looking into the situation. Next time you pass the Harbour beach have a look for yourself as it has risen more than 12 feet in the last 30 years, it won’t be long until it’s level with the top of the seawall. Had a walk around to our buzzing Monkton Village Arts Cafe to see Mo Martin’s lovely Art exhibition and enjoy a coffee, her art is so very bright and cheerful, the whole concept of the Cafe with its art theme has proven a great local success as a community hub and has brought the place alive, indeed now becoming as colourful and vibrant as Mo’s art. I did try to get the Boundary commission to name the new Ward (currently known as Ryde North East) Monkton Village as within its review the commission intended to call it “Ryde Central’, we did however end up with a partial compromise and have now been officially designated the name of “Monkton Mead”, So basically Monkton Mead now has a village and long may it prosper.
When sand is washed west from the Harbour beach it is lost from the beaches West of the Pier as it tends to travel North into the Solent and that movement is now dropping sediment that is creating I was pleased to support the adoption of 10

We provide personally tailored levels of care, helping people to enjoy life with support but as independently as possible. Our Memory Lane Community offers dedicated care for people living with dementia. Walking around our Memory Lane Community you will find a place that has the feel of a family home. We provide social stimulus and promote inclusion to ensure meaningful engagement between residents. As well as the main social area, we have a beautiful quiet room with a lovely view of the wildlife garden. This room also doubles up as our six foot cinema screen for those afternoons at the movies. A focus on meeting the needs of individuals is vital to the healthy, well-balanced life style we want everyone to enjoy. Our emphasis is on person-centered care. A range of activities ensures daily living is pleasurable and rewarding. We are proud of the quality of our home cooking, hospitality and housekeeping, which minimise the worries of everyday living and leaves time to enjoy relaxation and hobbies. With three attractive lounges and two dining rooms, Orchard House provides plenty of opportunity to socialise - or find a quiet corner to relax. As part of a winter initiative we also host a ‘Don’t Dine Alone’ event which runs on a Monday to Friday 12.30 – 2.30pm. This provides an opportunity for the older person, who may be socially isolated to come to the home and join our pre-lunch drinks soiree with other people and then enjoy a complimentary home cooked three course dinner in one of our lovely dining rooms. Booking is essential. Please call in for a coffee and a tour - you'll be welcome anytime. We will always be happy to talk through how we can help you and your family.
