Census day is on March 21st Have you received your census 2021 letter? Households across the Isle of Wight are being asked to take part in Census 2021. It’s important you fill in your census questionnaire because the information you share affects the life of every single person living on the Isle of Wight Charities and voluntary organisations often use it as evidence to get funding. It helps businesses to understand their customers and, for example, decide where to open new shops. Plus, those doing research, like university students and people looking into their family history, use census data. It provides important information on population diversity, allowing organisations to know whether they are meeting their responsibilities and triggering action where necessary. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) will send you a letter in the post with an access code and instructions (from March 1st). You can fill in your census questionnaire online as soon as you get yours. Paper questionnaires will be available for those who need them. Here are some Isle of Wight census facts from the last census in 2011 If you don’t get one in the next 138,265 people lived in Isle of Wight. couple of weeks, please get in 761 of you were chefs. touch with the census contact There were 299 boat/ship builders and repairers. centre - www.census.gov.uk 280 people were farmers. 14 of you worked in footwear & leather working You can also request a paper trades. questionnaire if you’d prefer 9,508 of you walked to work. to complete your census that The top language, other than English or Welsh, was way. Welcome to the March issue of Island Magazines. During these difficult times I am very grateful to advertisers, contributors, readers and distributors who have supported this local community magazine which in turn has enabled me to keep publishing it each month. We had some very cold weather during February along with the promise of snow but unfortunately or fortunately (depending how you feel about it) it did not really amount to much and the few flakes we did have only settled for a few hours. As we move into March I hope that Spring will bring some warmer weather so we can enjoy our daily exercise and look more positively to the future. Inside this issue will you find the regular news reports from local councillors which, are always informative and are a good way to keep up with local news for your area. There are also feature articles ranging from postal votes for the upcoming elections, census 2021 and what’s happening in March and I know many of you really enjoy our puzzle section and you will find this on pages 12 and 13. If you have any news or information you would like shared, please do get in contact with me and I will help you as best I can. I hope you enjoy reading this issue and look forward to catching up with you next month.

News Report from Wootton Bridge Councillor Barry Abraham 07800736557 | Email:- barry.abraham@iow.gov.uk As I write my March report it has been announced on the radio that over 15 million vaccines have been given out, no doubt by the time this goes live, that figure will be substantially higher. It is quite staggering how quick the vaccines have been rolled out with a whole army of professional and volunteer workers across the country and to them our thanks must go out. On the Island, council and other public bodies have been hard at work at our vaccination centres. Thanks to all involved in delivering such a service on which so much rests.

school in New Road and how we walked the path before any housing had been built up to the recreation ground for sport.

The developer at Hunters Moon has applied for a further two properties on the site. I have had some comments raising concerns but having looked at the plans I do not think there are any real planning reasons to refuse the application as the site is now going to have over nine units. I have asked planning officers to ask for a contribution for affordable housing. There is a legal requirement on applications of nine houses or more that 35% of the properties must be affordable.

I have raised with the parish council the possibility of a commemorative seat for the former parish council chairman Ken Morris who sadly passed away recently. Ken served on the parish from its inception until his death and was well known in the village where he had lived all his life. Ken was always up for a joke and could always give as good as he got. I think a seat is a small gesture to a man who gave so much. I will miss the father of the parish council as I fondly knew him.

I have been working with residents whose properties back onto the path leading from Church Road to New Road. The footpath N97 has a ditch that has become overgrown and neglected, parts have been piped and the council have now decided to pipe the ditch and back fill the space to stabilise the bank to stop resident’s gardens sliding into the ditch along with their fences. When I recently walked the path, I remembered my school days at the old 4

Where Woodlands Crescent is, there was a pond, and it was a great place for a nature ramble. I cannot remember hearing of any protests at the time at the loss of green fields and ponds. Thankfully society is now much more switched on and will fight for the green spaces and understand what we are losing. That pond was fed by the ditch and what a loss it was, not least to all the wildlife that called the pond home.

I have received concerns about the amount of litter from the racecourse roundabout and up Lushington Hill. I reported the complaint to Island Roads who informed me they were going to clean the road shortly as it is on a six-week rota. Unfortunately, litter on the streets is a constant complaint as well as dog fouling on the recreation ground. I do despair sometimes why people throw their rubbish down and expect the council to

News Report from Wootton Bridge Councillor Barry Abraham come along after them to pick it up. The same goes for certain dog walkers, not everyone by no means but the few do give the rest a bad name. Hopefully soon as the days are getting longer, we might start seeing some warmer weather that can start to make us feel better. In the garden snowdrops and daffodils have now made a welcome appearance and even the blackbirds are starting to pair up so hopefully spring is not far away. Take care and have the vaccination when offered and do not believe the nonsense being peddled by some. We can beat Covid, but we all need to do the right thing.

A few scam reports from Trading Standards this week. Be very wary of any unsolicited phone calls, emails and texts and remember NEVER click on links in any messages! • Increasing reports around domestic/white goods insurances. These appear to be very prevalent at the minute and will call you to say that you need this insurance, or your insurance has expired, and you must make the payments. These companies are growing in number and the insurances are worthless. One customer who had taken the insurance out needed to use it as her washing machine had broken, she was met with a wall of silence/excuses. These are not genuine – Do Not be bullied into taking them out. • Reports of phishing emails from the banks, TV Licensing and Netflix have come through. This is a common theme in that your details are invalid, there is a problem with your account, click the link to put in the correct details – DON’T if you do the scammers will have access to your bank account. • Lastly a worrying report from a resident that she received the Amazon scam call, but it came from a local IOW number. This number will have been spoofed by the scammers, but we are far more likely to answer if we think it’s a local number – Be Careful.

What does the month of March offer us? March is normally the month when the Island starts coming to life again with Spring events for everyone to enjoy. Unfortunately this is not a normal year... and as we are currently living through a pandemic local events have been cancelled and put on hold. But all is not lost as there are still some yearly events to look forward to and which you can celebrate in your own unique style, indoors, in your bubble while keeping safe and not breaking any lockdown rules.

St David’s Day - Monday 1st March. St David is the patron saint of Wales and he

is celebrated on March 1st. To mark the day, Welsh people around the world wear one or both of Wales’s national emblems - a daffodil and a leek. ... Patron saints are chosen to be special protectors or guardians over all areas of life.

Meteorological Spring 2021 – Monday 1st March. In meteorology for the Northern

hemisphere, spring begins on this day. The meteorological seasons are divided according to the calendar months. Spring months are March, April and May. Spring is one of the four conventional temperate seasons following winter and preceding summer. Spring is seen as a time of growth, renewal, of new life (both plant and animal) being born. The term is also used more generally as a metaphor for the start of better times, as in the Prague Spring. Unstable weather may more often occur during spring, when warm air begins on occasions to invade from lower latitudes, while cold air is still pushing on occasions from the Polar regions.

Mothering Sunday – Sunday 14th March. Mothering Sunday always falls on the

fourth Sunday in Lent, 21 days before Easter Sunday and is a day honouring mothers and mother churches. Celebrated in the British Isles and elsewhere in the Englishspeaking world. Mothering Sunday is the biggest flower buying day of the year in Britain and Carnations are the flowers typically associated with Mothering Sunday. Mothering Sunday was originally the day when in 16th Century Christian practice one would make an annual visit to one’s mother church, which meant that most mothers would be reunited with their children on this day.

St Patrick’s Day – Wednesday 17th March. The day commemorates Saint

Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland and celebrates the heritage and culture of the Irish in general. Celebrations generally involve public parades and festivals, céilís, and the wearing of green attire or shamrocks. St. Patrick’s Day became an official public holiday in Ireland in 1903 with the passing of the Bank Holiday (Ireland) Act 1903.

Astronomical Spring 2021 – Sunday 20th March - In the Northern Hemisphere, the March equinox (aka spring equinox or vernal equinox) occurs when the Sun crosses the equator line, heading north in the sky. This event marks the start of spring in the northern half of the globe. After this date, the Northern Hemisphere begins to be tilted more toward the Sun, resulting in increasing daylight hours and warming temperatures. With the equinox, enjoy the increasing sunlight hours, with earlier dawns and later sunsets.

Clocks go forward – Sunday 28th March. Clocks go forward one hour at

1.00am on the last Sunday of March. It starts the period of British Summer Times (BST), or Daylight-Saving Time (DST) so that mornings have one hour less daylight, and evenings one hour more.

News Report from Cllr Wayne Whittle. Tel 07768 118766 Twitter @RydeAbide E wayne.whittle@iow.gov.uk The emergency Appley sinkhole repairs carried out by Southern Water contractors have caused huge damage on connecting roads and pavements around Canoe Lake caused by heavy vehicles and tankers attending the repairs driving onto pavements. After contacting Southern Water, they have assured me that they will be making good all associated damage once the sinkhole and sewage pipe damage is repaired. I’ve asked them to prohibit their contractors from using pavements as roads. Have been advised that the major and essential sinkhole and sewage pipe repairs will take some time and must be fixed asap to ensure our local shared sewage and surface water sewers keep flowing. I was very disappointed to hear the Isle of Wight Council had been unable to reach a satisfactory conclusion to the arbitration proceedings with AEW over the reopening of Ryde Ice Arena. IWC initiated action on the basis that AEW was in breach of its lease having failed to use its best endeavours to keep the facility open and operational at all times. This followed its unilateral decision to close the rink in October 2016 and its unwillingness to discuss realistic approaches to reopening the facility before it started to deteriorate and require significant investment to reopen as an ice rink. 8

The Isle of Wight Council legal advice at the time, on the information available, was that we had a good case to make to recover the building or have it reopened. However, during the arbitration process AEW disclosed significant additional information, previously unknown to the council, that changed the balance of the legal advice so that our claim would be very unlikely to succeed in court. Much as I and the whole community of Ryde and the Isle of Wight feel wronged and aggrieved by the actions of AEW we cannot afford to risk further public money pursuing an action we are advised would not be successful. Despite the fact that we are now over four years since AEW denied the people of Ryde access to the ice rink. IWC have used the arbitration process to discuss with AEW other plans it might have for bringing the building back into use which might meet the wishes of the community, especially in this key seafront location. However, it takes two parties to negotiate and for as long as AEW is only interested in siting a supermarket on the site then there is nothing further to discuss with them as this will not be supported by RTC, IWC and community. In the discussions, that have now ceased, it was made clear to AEW that the Full Council resolution I proposed in September 2017 still remains a clear and consistent policy. So, until AEW can come up with a credible use for the building IWC will not allow AEW to use of the council’s adjacent land for any purposes. continued over the page

News Report from Cllr Wayne Whittle continued For as long as AEW demands either an unrealistic sales price and/or an equally unrealistic rental value for the bullying and disregards of the council’s position, we can only assume it has no real interest in reopening the building or investing in the area. So, Isle of Wight council must now review its position and see whether there are any other alternative strategies it could use to find a pragmatic way of securing a new future for the building with the full support of our community. Once again, a multitude of ever increasing tons of sand on the Harbour beach is causing problems for our parks, highways, footpaths, road drains and Harbour access. Discussions are taking place between RTC and IWC about best solutions for sand management, my personal view is moving it around will remain ineffective in the long term and the only sustainable solution is to completely remove 3 feet of sand from the whole beach.

Beach sand can be Watergate Rd, Newport, PO30 1XP 01983 212999 washed to remove salt the same as the shingle that’s dredged from Bembridge Harbour, that is treated and used for building, the council should be talking with Wight Building Materials who could remove the sand, treat and recycle for building use. 9

Claire Shand, electoral registration officer at the Isle of Wight Council, said: “The elections will take place at erectafenceiw@gmail.com a time when COVID-19 continues to present risks to public health. Depending on the infection rate, measures taken to control the spread of the virus may change as we approach May. “We are working hard to ensure polling stations will be safe places to vote, but you can choose to apply to vote by post or by proxy instead. If you are thinking about applying for a postal vote, then please do so as early as possible. To vote in the elections - either at a polling station, by post, or by appointing someone you trust to vote on your behalf as your proxy - you must first be registered to vote, which can be done online in just five minutes. News Report from Councillor Charles Chapman for Ryde South Email:- Charles.Chapman@iow.gov.uk | Mobile number 07970 009608 I can’t believe that it’s the March issue already. So much has happened and is happening that it’s difficult to perceive what would be of interest to you. First thank you for the support that you have given to me over the past months with your feedback and especially your comments: high on the list were your comments about the cost of parking and the idea of suggesting that the cost could be wrapped up in the price of the ferry fare with the knock-on effect of free parking for the island.

about the Island. In order to ensure the survival of our unique shops and local centres it’s important that our larger businesses, national organisation i.e. Health services etc., use local services when choosing a franchise/supplier for their organisations. Despite many objections, local reservations and many other issues raised by both local people and further afield the development on the boundary of Ryde might go ahead. Recently I wrote and spoke out against the ‘joining up’ of various locations i.e. Binstead with Ryde, Carisbrooke with Newport, Bembridge with Forelands the list goes on. To ensure that our Island retains its uniqueness and its attractability for current and future tourism, our main source of income, we must stop it becoming a building site and housing development.

Second was the concern that many of you share with me as to the privatisation of the NHS by the backdoor. We have already learnt that some of these ideas have been put on ‘hold’ and that collaboration between departments is now being highlighted rather than being outsourced. It’s up to all of us, who want to preserve our NHS, to make this work. This includes You will notice that I haven’t mentioned the Council who are major partners in any the ‘elephant in the room’... Not Because I am not concerned but because I see people such collaboration. struggling with it daily. The pandemic! It’s not going anywhere and somehow; Third, locally! We need to keep services we must accommodate it into a longerlocal. Too many services are being centralised, instead of support being given term life’s reality. Currently, we are still stabbing in the dark, but the resolution to existing local services and expanding and courage of individuals, groups and them where they don’t exist, because friends ensures that we all have a future they have been moved to Newport or and that that future is positive. To that end the mainland. Local services need to it is even more important that we keep our be re-situated to serve local people. It’s local services, shops and employment in ‘unbelievable’ that Ryde was served with house. Additional housing, not targeted local health centres and its own hospital, which was moved to Newport, in the belief at the indigenous population, is neither acceptable nor wanted. Already the that it would improve its effectiveness and growth of second homes impacts on our save money. It’s important, where we already strained resources, with the knockcan, that we all support Island businesses on effect, which so often such populations otherwise we will lose what is unique 14

News Report from Councillor Charles Chapman for Ryde South have, that our local communities become fragmented; with too many of our young people having to leave the Island to find work and even somewhere to live. Too many in my Ward are having to wait for decent accommodation and, what really worries me, having them having to move away from both family and friends. Covid19 has clearly shown us the importance that both family and friends have on our physical and mental health. It has also highlighted the importance that a stable and local community have on being able to support people in their homes.

I’m still able to ‘Walk my Ward’ as part of Call: 01983 754620 for a quote or my exercise routine while social distancing with my face mask so I can report and email: info@westwightaudio.co.uk get things done. What is noticeable, even www.westwightaudio.co.uk though it’s winter and has been incredibly cold and wet, is the lack of conversion. Passing people on my walks has led to a general greeting, but I do miss the general chit chat and update on people’s lives. For those who are able and have a laptop, the site ‘People Matter IW’ is an excellent site, signposting organisations which may be able to help you. Coronavirus Ryde Support Hub telephone number 01983 716020 (Aspire Ryde) are a local organisation which can support people in many ways, including assistance with those in need both financially and mentally. I cannot stress enough the problems caused through isolation and loneliness. The ‘Good Neighbour’, scheme which many of you participated in before the pandemic has lost its momentum, due to social distancing and the need for household bubbles. Even so, if you can telephone or facetime somebody who is alone, it would be appreciated. One of my constituents (who is in her late 80’s and has recently lost her husband of over 60 years) is using videos sent to her by her former pupils/friends on cheerful and amusing chats. She had never used ‘What’s App’ or her husband’s smart phone before but is giving a lot of joy and encouragement to an ever-growing group. Now is the time to look up what help there is and to use it, should you so wish. Island Roads are very busy in Ryde, particularly in the Ward, their signs keep being moved which is causing problems, mainly for motorists. Please, if you see anybody moving these signs or you realise that they have probably been moved contact Island Roads. 15
