Senior Kitizens

Island Magazines has got together with the Isle of Wight Cats Protection Adoption Centre to let you know about some of the wonderful senior kitizens who are waiting for their forever home. You will definitely fall in love with these older cats and please don’t let their age put you off. Cats regularly live into their late teens or older these days, so most seniors will have many years of love to give. Older cats are usually more homely and have great personalities making them wonderful companions. Will is a very handsome 8 year old short haired black and white cat. He can be both chilled out and playful and likes to chase string and play with toys and other times like to be quiet and by himself. He doesn’t want to live with other animals and definitely likes the outdoors. Dizzy is a sweet natured independent mature lady. She doesn’t ask for much - a warm bed, yummy food and fuss. She is a 13 year old Tabby who doesn’t want to live with other cats and although a little older she is still young at heart. Dizzy cannot be rehomed to some areas of Ryde or Yarmouth. Maisy is a black and white 14 year old who really just wants her own comfy space in a quiet loving home. She can be very affectionate and loves a gentle stroke now and then. She doesn’t demand much attention but she’ll quite happily come to you when you approach and will purr away. Maisy seems very content to just chill out, so she could possibly be an indoor cat.

Suki loves the company of humans but not other animals. She enjoys being made a fuss of and will happily rub around you but she is not a hugger. Suki is Tabby and white and is a young 10 year old. Her dream home is a nice quite place to relax with a garden to nose around and a comfy armchair for naps. Suki cannot be rehomed in Ryde. Dora is a stunning 16 year old tortoiseshell and white cat. Dora’s owner went in to care, and she misses having a soulmate around. Dora likes pottering about in the garden. She isn’t the world’s biggest lap fan, but will happily follow you about. She has lived with a doggy before so may be ok to do so again.

FOSTER CARERS NEEDED

Do you have a spare room and time to make a difference? Cats Protection is in need of fosterers who can devote some time and love to socialise kittens or care for a cat not ready for adoption. You supply the love and CP will supply the rest and pay for all medical costs. If you are unable to commit to having a cat full time this could be for you? All support and training given (online training) Please call CP if you think you can help.

Welcome to the May issue and thank you for picking up a copy. May is set to be a busy month, what with the two Bank Holidays and lots happening across the Island. You can find details of these events on the ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 10, 11 and 12. We must now keep our fingers crossed for some good weather.

This month we have teamed up with Isle of Wight Cats Protection to find some forever homes for their Senior Kitizens. These mature cats are still so loving and wonderful companions and we had the hard task of choosing just five of them to be the stars of our feature, which you can read on page 2.

Island Magazines @islandmagazines

This months front cover certainly made a splash and you can read about the photographer on page 7. On page 14 you will find an interesting question and answer article on waste and recycling. As usual this month is packed with news and information and is supported by some great advertisers. I hope you have a great month and I look forward to catching up with you soon.

News Report from Wootton Bridge Councillor Barry Abraham 07800736557 | Email:- barry.abraham@iow.gov.uk This year must have been the wettest start to spring for many years, every day has just brought more rain and as I write our Hereford cows have started calving and usually by the middle of April, they are mainly born outside in the field. Sadly not this year. They are all still under cover. No doubt the gardeners among us are as frustrated as I am! Hopefully a week or two of nice sunny weather will put it right. There might be some good news to report on the Plane Tree in the next few weeks. Things do not seem to be as bad as the first report, commissioned by the IWC had painted its future. A more detailed report has been done and I hope to report its findings next time. The saga of New Road continues, I have asked Island Roads for an update on when the upgrade is likely to be started. As I write the drainage surveys have been carried out and are in the process of being evaluated and no date has been given to start the work, but it is possible late summer early autumn. I will keep you posted. On the planning front I have asked that the Darwins application be determined by the Planning Committee. This is for a dozen more holiday units on the field opposite the main holiday park. Whilst I have supported Darwins previous application and they have done a fantastic job with the site, I am concerned that going outside the main park will have a major impact on Woodside and will bring forward other similar applications. The telecommunications Arial on the Recreation ground attached to one of the flood lights has also been given the go 4

ahead. I have been told that the applicants do not intend to go ahead with the project. The cold weather has had quite an impact on some roads right across the Island and I have noticed more pot holes than usual if that is possible! If you see a pot hole that is causing problems that appears to be getting bigger and nothing being done about it, do give me a call or send me an email, likewise with drainage gullies and ditches. Island Roads have now put up the signs for “Care in the Garden at Palmers Brook after declaring their old chalk boards dangerous. Good luck to John and his team, keep up the good work. Plastic has now become public enemy Number One and the Council now has an ambition for a plastic free Island. The one thing I will be glad to see the back of is the throw away cups and spoons. Some people take the throw away literally when you see how many are now littering our roads and lanes. I have recently attended a meeting with Southern Water to hear their plans for the future and how they are planning to make sure we do not run out of water and also how they are planning to clean the water still further than they do at present. Hopefully the next time I write, the weather will be warmer, drier and sunnier and the BBQ will be out of the shed! Please do not forget if you have an issue with the council, please get in touch via any of the methods above. Barry Abraham.

News Report from - Cllr Wayne Whittle. Tel 07792 670771 Email wayne.whittle@iow.gov.uk Twitter @RydeAbide Well Spring is here (been a long winter) the waterfowl on Canoe Lake are acting off sorts at the moment as they commence their sometimes brutal courtship rituals, be careful as you drive around the lake as they are totally oblivious to anything other than their mate and tend to occupy the roads much more this time of the year. The Canada Geese are also back again... New play equipment has been installed at the Appley Sand Park but frustratingly the park cannot be opened due to the soggy conditions, officers will open the park as soon as the ground has dried up. If you like spending your Summer on the beach the Waterside Trust are advertising for new Lifeguards to train and attend Ryde beach and pool this season, they need new recruits to join their lifeguarding team from May to September. If you’re interested and aged 18 and upwards email Todd on rydebeachlifeguards @gmail.com Cross Street is looking snazzy with many new brightly decorated specialist independent retailing and catering businesses now all open ready for the summer. The High Street has a new Mountain Warehouse outlet opening soon opposite Costa Coffee, its good to see this long vacant unit brought back into use. The Environment Agencies flood prevention works are now in full swing on the Harbour beach with the piling almost complete, ready for the pipe to be laid.

After the strong winds and storms this winter there has been much sand displacement on the remainder of our beaches, as we know our talcum powder like sand is fine and soft and it can blow en masse from one end of the beach to the other during strong dry winds. People pass my business complaining about the stones that have washed up, this usually is not always the case, most were already there, the reason they appear is because the wind blows the sand but cannot blow heavier stones, so they become exposed until we walk on them or the beach cleaning machine (that starts in May) drags the sand back to the top. We do collect some stones on the shore line and shingle bank that runs North from Puckpool point and the theory is its because of shingle dredging in Bembridge Harbour or caused by the large vessels entering the Solent that reverse their propellers to slow down and throw up shingle from the seabed. More than likely a bit of both but if one thing is for sure since Ryde Harbour was built we have collected a multitude of Sand on our beaches (was once a 15ft drop to the beach from the sea wall), hence the essential EA works to put the outfall into the much lower harbour and also the cause of me constantly asking Island Roads to jet out our local road drains and gullies that fill with sand every time the wind blows from the North.

Questions and Answers regarding your green/brown lid garden waste bins and other bits Q - Can you tell me how the money is collected for the garden waste scheme? A - Subscriptions can be made online at www.iwight.com/waste click on the garden waste web page for the link to ‘do it on line’ or call 823777 for the councils waste service direct line at the contact centre

Q - How often does it gets emptied? A - Fortnightly Q - What can go in it? A - Green garden waste – no soil or rubble – branches up to 20cm think

Q - What do people do if they decide after a year or two NOT to continue?

Q - WHAT will be the changes when the Forest Road site opens?

A- Subscriptions have to be renewed each period, if they are not we will come and collect the bin.

A - Changes will be to the treatment process not to the collection service. Fleet will operate out of Forest Park. Recycling will be sorted, graded and baled for the market here rather than in Cambridgeshire. Black Bag Waste will no longer go to landfill instead it will be sorted to pull out the dirty recyclates and the remainder will be shredded for fuel.

Q - What will happen to this type of waste? A - It goes to the Biffa Windrow Composting at Standen Heath (next to Lynnbottom) where it is composted – I believe they use Wight Reclamation as their operator and the compost can be bought through them. Q - Can you clarify what the cost is for the Green/brown lid garden waste bins:

Q - Where do I put my dog poo or cat litter? A - In black bag.

A - Regular Subscription (29 January 2018 onwards)

• 3 Year (through to 31 March 2021) = £180
