News Report from Wootton Bridge Councillor Barry Abraham 07800736557 | Email:- barry.abraham@iow.gov.uk Heading into November and so far we have had some glorious autumn weather. The two apple trees in the garden have produced heavy crops and I am wondering how best to store them, of course this is something our Victorian forefathers had no problems with, they did not waste the fruit and vegetables that grew in their gardens and at this time of the year the kitchens would have been busy bottling, pickling and preserving the excess. The one fruit that has always puzzled me are sloes, they are absolutely horrible. Who, I wonder came up with the idea of putting them in gin and coming up with something that tastes so nice!
be able to report its findings and recommendations next month.
I have nothing to report on the outstanding planning applications. Thank you everyone who has let me have their views, I will feed these through to the planning officers. Hot off the press I have received confirmation that New Road is at last going to be upgraded or at least the section from the High Street to the junction to St. Edmunds Walk is. The other section is still on going on how best to upgrade it with least inconvenience to residents and businesses, to try and help with the speed. The parish council has agreed to pay for the 10 MPH to be painted on the road.
The little War Memorial in the St. Edmunds church yard lists all the names of the fallen and I always find it sad that so many lives were given up by Wootton which at the time was a small village.
Following the accident on the bridge between an elderly pedestrian and a car, there has been a meeting to push for a crossing on the bridge. I cross it regularly and it can be quite a wait for a break in the traffic to cross it safely. Island Roads and the council are carrying out surveys to see how a safe crossing might best be achieved. The report on the old plane tree is now nearly ready to be published and I hope to
As with every November there will be the usual Remembrance Sunday service at St. Edmunds church. This year is the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice. My own Grandfather, Arthur Flux, left the family farm at Thorness to join the campaign as a 19 year old lad and was in the Royal Artillery. When I was a little boy, he would talk to me of some of the things he had done and would show me the wound in his neck where he had been hit by german shrapnel that so nearly cost him his life.
The parish council has recently sent out a housing survey to all residents, the purpose is to try and establish the housing needs of the village for the future. I cannot overstate how important this document will be if we want to control speculative development in the village. I am advised that around 25,000 vehicles travel through the High Street and Lushington Hill every day and the numbers are growing and sometimes queue from the Cedars lights almost back to the Fishbourne lights and I have sought to establish air quality for the area and I will feed back the results next time. Please do not forget if you have an issue with the council, please phone or email me on the contact details at the top of the page.

SHOP LOCAL THIS CHRISTMAS As the nights draw in there is no getting away from the inevitable. Christmas is now just around the corner. Retailers are gearing up for one final big push of the year, to get them through the dreaded winter months. It can be the make or break for the considerable amount of small businesses we have on the island. Ryde Business Association are asking people to take the Shop Local pledge this year. Chair, Zoe Thompson explains “Ryde is predominantly made up of micro businesses. Independent Shops that are owned and run by just one or two people. We are asking that this Christmas people think local first. From buying meat from your local butcher, and veg at the local greengrocers, to making gift purchases for the family. It really does make a huge difference to businesses and has a positive impact on the town. RBA will once again be running their Small Business campaign running from 29th November through to the 10th December, giving people who support their local shops a chance to win a cash prize. There will also be a late night shopping event on Thursday 6th December, with plenty of entertainment around the town and special offers for shoppers. Spread some Christmas cheer to your High Street, and shop local.

Yoga has slotted very easily into my life and can be fitted in around my daily routine and work life. I don’t see it as a chore and I don’t need specialist equipment or need to go to a gym or anywhere specific to practice it. The benefits I’m seeing at this early stage are all the motivation I need.

Obviously I knew the importance of breathing before, but now I understand it to a much deeper level and how I can control it and use it for a better quality of life. My teacher, Nickie Short is amazing at what she does and she listens to me about problem areas in my life and can see the changes I need to make to move forward so I can be in a better position physically and mentally. I have spoken to her about my asthma which at this time of year is not being as controlled as much as I would like, so she incorporated movements to improve lung capacity and to help me synchronise movement with breath. From previous lessons I have also used the breath awareness techniques to assist when I’m wheezy and have to use my inhaler more than normal. Nickie has taught me a variety of techniques which leave me feeling energised and I can feel my body waking up. The stretches are all working to improve mobility, release tension and bring awareness, whether it’s a pelvic tilt, shoulder rolls, the stepped breath (viloma), Kati Chakrasana or Tadasana, the palm tree pose they are all playing a vital role in my well being and self awareness. Nickie has classes happening in different areas across the island and can also offer lessons on a one to one basis. If you are interested in attending a class or discussing further call Nickie Short on 07799 032824 or visit her website www. yogaisleofwight.co.uk

News Report from - Cllr Wayne Whittle. Tel 07792 670771 Twitter @RydeAbide E wayne.whittle@iow.gov.uk Ryde Arena - I attended the Ryde Arena Group “Ring around the Rink” event with fellow IOW Councillors and our MP on Saturday 6th October where we joined over 300 residents holding hands and standing shoulder to shoulder around the arena remembering how the skaters had been locked out by the new leaseholder AEW 2 years ago. Skaters have had to travel to Basingstoke and Gosport ice rinks to continue their skating mostly in the early hours to train for competitions, some players from the Wightlink raiders have joined other mainland teams whilst they hope for Ryde Arena to reopen. We meet as a group every 2 months to catch up and follow progress in fundraising and rink developments. The IW Council has been collating evidence regarding the lack of use and poor maintenance of the building in preparation for the last and final negotiation to have the rink reopened or returned to local control after 2 years being broken and dark in the gateway of our Island. The legal position is complex and officers have been carefully working through the issues, I’m now pressing for negotiations to be concluded as quickly as possible so a public statement can be made about the position regarding the rink no later than Christmas #RydeSlide - Although I’m still waiting for a formal cheque presentation the 5 Ryde community groups and charities (Ryde Rescue, Aspire Ryde, Waterside Pool, Ryde Arena Group and the Fire service) have already received cheques for £1,053.85 each, we also raised an additional £400 for Pride. It was a lovely warm sunny event this year and a great time was had by all, would like to thank everyone who bought tickets, our sponsors
and HSS who provide the infrastructure and road closures not forgetting Isle of Wight Council and Island Roads who permit the event to close Union Street. Ryde Flood prevention works - The Environment Agencies flood prevention works are in the final stages in Simeon Recreation Ground, Harbour and Beach, they are expected to be completed by Christmas. The flood wall in the recreation ground will be clad with brick both sides and capped with coping stones, there will also be some planting either side of the wall once the footpath level is raised. I ask all local residents to please pick up the falling leaves on their properties to help prevent them being washed into road drains and gullies. If anyone has noticed a road drain that is blocked that causes dangerous surface water on the highway please report it to Island Roads at info@islandroads.com or myself at wayne.whittle@iow.gov.uk Free PSA test - The Prostate Cancer Support Group and Ryde Lions Club are holding a “Men’s lives Matter” free PSA testing day on Saturday 24th November at the Ryde Marina Bowls Club on Ryde Esplanade from 10.40am until 14.00pm for men aged over 45. News Report from Councillor Charles Chapman for Ryde South Email:- Charles.Chapman@iow.gov.uk | Mobile number 07970 009608 Welcome and thank you for reading this news report. First, what a marvellous summer! I think that we have all enjoyed the daily doses of sun and how it changes our mood. I asked my friends, what, if any, difference did it make to them. All answered that they felt that people talked to each other more and had a more cheerful attitude. Secondly, many of my older folks said how they got out of their houses, even if it was only to go and sit in the garden, something many had not done for some time. Why am I repeating this? Well, lets try to hold on to these feelings throughout the autumn and winter. It’s harder to be ‘smiley’ when it’s dark and rainy so put your summer photos somewhere you can easily see them and remember to reminisce about the summer. I know that some of you shop early for Christmas but there are plenty of fun days to be had before that. Bonfire night, whether you hold it in your garden or attend an organised one, it’s a great event for getting people together. I’ve been asked to remind you about safety! In other words, read and follow the instructions. If you have, and I know some of you have been building bonfires already, check, that none of our furry friends have made their home in them, especially hedgehogs. These are now almost an endangered species. If in doubt, phone the RSPCA for advice. Have a great night and be ‘safe’. The Arc woodland, which is owned by Sovereign, had a Community Day on 21st August which was a tremendous success. Sovereign has made extensive improvements including clearing the 12
infamous Japanese Knotweed. It is now open for people to enjoy the natural beauty of the area. I wish that I could include all the marvellous pics of the day, including the many wild life activities available for our young people to enjoy. There are some great proposals in hand including, log benches, wild life markers and refurbishment of the play area. This is due to start in November. More bins have been requested as overspillage is a continual problem, but we can all help by making sure that rubbish is securely fastened and put in strong bags. I have secured with Sovereign Housing active CCTV. I have now seen this in action and includes night vision. The clarity of this equipment means that any anti-social behaviour can be easily identified and the police notified. Locals have already told me that this has helped. Island Roads are spraying my Ward for weeds etc. We also identified a number of pot holes which I have been assured will be done. Road reconstruction in my Ward has been delayed because of major works given a greater priority on the other side of the Island. Unfortunately there was nothing that I could do about it, but I shall be keeping my ‘eye’ on the situation. N.B. A new information centre is going into County Hall. I will keep you updated as to its opening and content.

These items include: An Accuvein vein mapper which is a portable piece of equipment designed to find elusive veins without distress to the patient by holding the equipment above the skin. This is particularly useful for patients with conditions involving communication difficulties, which make them anxious during medical procedures. Sunshine Radio has been able to replace an outdated studio. The station broadcasts daily and handles many patient requests – a service which can be a great morale boost to patients and their relatives.
A tonometer has been purchased for the eye department. This makes the measuring of pressure in the eyes much less uncomfortable and stressful for patients. The Friends have been delighted to support Care in the Garden, and this has been done by funding the purchase of 15 attractive planters from them to place around hospital grounds. And last but not least for now, the Friends have funded four more vacuum mattresses for the Ambulance service. They are comfortable, warm and adaptable and provide a secure means of extraction for immobilised patients. We continue to raise funds with the help of the Island’s very generous public, and by far our biggest source of income is our shop and our cafes. Please do come in when you visit the Hospital, Laidlaw Centre or the Ryde Health and Wellbeing Clinic.
