EXCITING TIMES FOR RYDE – An update from Ryde Business Association. It has been a very busy few months, but good things are happening! Earlier this year RBA and other local organisations, had the privilege of meeting the panel from Historic England and giving a tour of the town. The report produced highlighted the challenges, but also indicated the fantastic potential for Ryde. As a result, RBA worked directly on a funding bid for the High St, of which Ryde was selected, meaning a boost of £480,000 to kick start improvements. In addition, we have been pleased to see support from IW Council and Ryde Town Council on the submission of another funding application, this time for the Town Hall. So what does this mean for businesses? Any improvements to the town will be positive. Making Ryde an even better place to live, work and visit, helps to encourage people to the area, and in turn the shops and businesses will benefit. On the lead up to the winter season, everyone is encouraged to consider ‘shopping local’. We’re going to make it even easier for you to do that, with our late-night shopping event, Thursday 5th December, and the Christmas shop local campaign running throughout the month. To keep up to date with what the town has to offer, head to our new website www.weloveryde.co.uk or follow us on social media. Zoe Thompson – RBA Chair

Welcome to the November issue of Island Magazines. I don’t have much to say this month on the weather except that it’s been very wet and it feels like it’s rained for weeks!!! Fingers crossed that by the time you read this the rain will have stopped and we’ll get some nice dry crisp days. Remembrance Sunday is on the 10th of November and the month is packed with Christmas Fayres and firework/bonfire events taking place across the island. Our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 12, 13 and 14 will keep you busy. Please remember that if you are having a firework display in your garden please let your neighbours know so they can ensure their family pets are kept safe and secure. Inside is packed with news and information including an update from The Friends of St Mary’s. There are some great local businesses advertising and please support them by using their services as much as you can. I hope you all have a great November and I look forward to catching up with you next month.

News Report from Wootton Bridge Councillor Barry Abraham 07800736557 | Email:- barry.abraham@iow.gov.uk I have just returned home from the planning site visit at the proposed development at Palmers Farm, the weather outside is quite unpleasant which has given me the incentive to write my report. The planning committee was shown the site and the road access. The planners have given the application a recommendation of approval. I do not support the development and will speak against it at the planning committee. The development is too far out from the centre of the village in my opinion and is certainly not sustainable. The affordable element is nothing of the sort and certainly will not be affordable to any young person in Wootton. The roads are pretty poor to say the least. I will report on the decision in my December report. Residents have raised with me the current state of Upper and Lower Woodside Roads that run from Palmers Road down to Woodside. They have also asked what the status of the road actually is. I have walked it many times over the years and have always believed it to be a track with public access. I have asked the Isle of Wight Council Rights of Way manager for his view as it does not appear to be on the Rights of Way register. I will report back at a later date with more information. The bridge at Park Road is being upgraded to strengthen it, this is being done as part of the Island Roads PFI project, unfortunately the much needed safety work at the bend is not being done at the same time, so I have asked on residents behalf that the weight and width restriction be kept in place to stop large vehicles using it, at the moment the work is causing tailbacks on Lushington Hill. 6

With the wet weather we are having at the moment and with dark evenings, the road drains and gullies can become blocked and cause water pooling on roads. If you see a road or lane where this is a problem, please do let me know and I will report it to Island Roads and get it dealt with. Abandoned cars have been reported to the parish council and myself and whilst these are not on the highway, I have asked council property services if the land they are on is council owned land, if so I will get officers to see if they can be removed. If the land is privately owned, it might come be that the landowner has to have them removed which does seem to be somewhat unfair to have to dispose of someone else’s dumped vehicle. I have contacted Island Roads for an update on when and how the work will be carried out on New Road’s second phrase. It does appear a plan is coming forward but Island Roads are not yet in a position to make the information available yet. I will keep the pressure on them. I had hoped to have seen the work well underway by now. Island Roads have also informed me they do not propose to upgrade Mill Square this year as planned. Following on from the tragic death of a pedestrian crossing the road at the bridge last year, a traffic and pedestrian survey has been carried out. As yet I have no information but when it becomes available I will let you know. Please do not forget if you have an issue with the council, please do get in contact with me.

The Friends of St Mary’s Hospital Update By Lesley Myland You may have recently heard via various sources about the Friends’ foyer cafe moving to another location within the new outpatients department in the North Hospital. Naturally we are sad about this - we have been serving our customers in the foyer for 32 years. However, our amazing team of volunteers and staff have a very positive approach to this development. We are working hard together to ensure that the Friends’ charity will keep on functioning to support the patients and staff at St Mary’s. We plan to keep our amazing team together as far as we can. We will have a bigger shop and will still be running three cafes. Ward trolley services will still go round daily, sometimes twice daily. So there is still lots to do and we will do our best to maintain our reputation for a caring attitude and good service. In the meantime, here are some of the things we have given grants for, as always with the objective of enhancing care and staff well being. We have provided the maternity unit with 5 relaxing and reclining chairs so that partners can wait in comfort for their new babies to arrive, no matter how long it takes! We are very proud of our contribution of £1500 towards the Memory Room for dementia patients in Colwell Ward. This provides a place to relax and enjoy distraction therapies especially designed to be familiar, calming and absorbing. The room is also used by non dementia patients. Note the twiddlemuffs which were made by Friends volunteers and customers with wool kindly donated by members of the public after an appeal. We gave Children’s Speech and Language Therapy 2 iPads and a range of toys designed to help with speech, attention and listening skills which in turn help with other communication skills. As soon as we are settled in our new home in the North Hospital we hope that all our customers will still come and join us for their cuppa! That way we can continue with this support for the patients and staff at St Mary’s Hospital.

News Report from Cllr Wayne Whittle. Tel 07792 670771 Twitter @RydeAbide E wayne.whittle@iow.gov.uk I was over the moon to hear Ryde Town Council had won their bid to access “Heritage High Street” funding and would like to thank all the Councillors who supported the vote in favour of. Winning this bid generates a good profile which in turn can compliment further bids for other related funding. Whilst writing this report I’ve just returned home from the October RTC meeting where fellow members voted unanimously this time for expressing an interest in a further lottery funded “Heritage Horizons” programme that provides grants in excess of 5 million pounds for “transformative and innovative” Heritage based proposals such as Ryde Theatre/Town Hall. Ryde Theatre has been a matter of great concern locally for many years in its dilapidated state and is mentioned in the RTC position statement as a priority issue. The funding programme is the only major grant source for large projects like the theatre so RTC submitting an expression of interest to the fund with the support of the IW Council’s Regeneration Team is fantastic news for Ryde. At this first stage RTC would not be committing to purchase, lease or fund the project, if successful IWC would want to discuss how to support the project going forward.

10

Winning bids tends to make you feel upbeat and hopeful in winning further bids and I’ve got a good feeling about this one... It would be great to get our local Town Hall/Theatre back up and running in top form for community use via a not for profit trust like “Shanklin theatre”. We need interested parties to come forward to create a group like “friends of Shanklin Theatre” to manage the assets art and community focused future. The Environment Agency has now completed its remedial works on new drains to let water escape from waterlogged gardens in lower West Hill Road through the flood wall, via none return valve, so it can once again make its way into the Monkton Brook. We even managed to get Monkton Street resurfaced in October, better late than never. If you’re out and about in the Ryde North East area drop in and have a coffee at the new “Monkton Arts and Lounge Coffee Bar” in East Street, there’s always something going on down there and such nice folks running the place, it’s brought “Monkton Village” alive (just around the corner from Monkton Street Shops) nice cake too.
