Welcome to the November issue. The clocks have gone back an hour and that extra time in bed was gratefully received. Autumn is in full swing and Winter is just around the corner. There has been a definite drop in the temperature but there have still been some lovely sunny days. For me it’s the simple things in life like still getting the washing dry outside! This month’s issue is packed with news, information and a range of interesting article which I hope you will all enjoy reading. As usual we have some great advertisers offering a range of services including Christmas gifts and ideas. Our puzzles on pages 12 and 13 will keep you busy and if you see yourself as a budding writer there is a great competition being run by Sight for Wight and you can find more details on page 2. It’s been a very difficult year for everyone, and many local businesses have been and still are struggling, so please use their services whenever you can. I hope you enjoy this issue and please let any business owners know about us and how they can advertise and promote themselves in this monthly community magazine. If you have any news or information you would like to share, please get in touch with me and I will always help in any way that I can. Enjoy your November and I look forward to catching up with you again soon. Best wishes
Debbie

News Report from Cllr Wayne Whittle. Tel 07768 118766 Twitter @RydeAbide E wayne.whittle@iow.gov.uk Storms struck during October blowing sand along the Esplanade, the wind was so strong it even sand blasted the paint off of the green railings on North Walk during the storm. Island Roads have been throwing the sand back onto the beach a bit at a time since. A big thanks to John O’Flynn and the West Hands Field Team who did great work clearing debris from the Monkton Mead just before the October Storms and rain began, keeping the river flowing by reducing debris blocking the trash screen. The shelter on Canoe Lake has been painted once again to cover up the graffiti and the barrier fencing has been replaced, as it was broken down by youths having a drunken party in the shelter late one night, the cherub on the Eastern Gardens fountain was also destroyed the same night. I don’t know what it is about our local shelters that attracts the continued antisocial behaviour and vandalism, Fiveways shelter has also had to be barriered off and modified as an attempt to discourage late night congregating.
will now hopefully keep the backed-up traffic pay queues on the pier rather than causing congestion on the Esplanade. Not sure when charging policy will resume. I was pleased to hear the 10 million gateway funding had been won to improve cycling and pedestrian access to the interchange and hope that our local working party will make sure it’s spent on what Ryde needs (remembering how we ended up with the slippery limestone pavements around St Thomas Square that was ordered from France for “Ryde precinct”, I think they thought it was for an indoor precinct as they were very slippery when wet). Work starts on the major railway modifications from January to the end of March and Island line should be receiving the first of its new trains. I’m looking forward to seeing them going up and down the pier. Chapel Road Barn in Binstead has now been completely re-built using all the original stone and bricks to celebrate it’s great history and heritage.
It looks quite nice repainted, but still today The barn is on the Ordnance Survey maps the barriers remain. of the late 19th Century and was one of the last buildings built with stone from the The timid Oystercatcher birds have reappeared on our beaches along with the local quarry. Brent Geese, here comes winter. The old barn once housed cart horses at the turn of the 20th Century and provided I note that Wightlink has moved their extra storage for the village volunteer fire Ryde pier pay parking barrier to the exit brigade, it then transformed into a very side of the pier. News Report from Cllr Wayne Whittle continued busy motorbike garage in the 1940’s and 50’s. It has its own address which is number 8 Chapel Road. Lots of interesting objects were found under the barn most of which are now on display at the area at the back of the barn which can be viewed from the kitchen window - A beautiful Victorian bed frame, pieces of stained glass, a pair of antlers and many local beer bottles.

He’s small but he is mighty… I had no trouble thinking of this month’s front cover. All I had to do was look out my window for inspiration as I have been befriended by a little robin who lives in the hawthorn at the bottom of the garden. I decided to name him and to be honest I decided to keep it simple and he is now known as Mr Robin… he is here all day, every day and has been for the last 5 weeks or so. Most OPEN FOR BUSINESS mornings you can hear his high pitched singing and some particular mornings if he has got out of bed on the wrong side (which happens to us all) he can be very vocal IES and almost aggressive in his tune. This also happens if RR BE PLU K NTS AC MS I have been a bit slack and not filled the feeders to the RRA BL KCU LAC PEA B IES RS ERR standard he likes. ANB LOG S

The robin is officially Britain’s national bird and they have been associated with Christmas as postmen in Victorian Britain were nicknamed “robins” because of their red-breasted coloured uniforms. So, the robin on the Christmas card came to represent the postman who delivered the card. Robins are known to have spiritual and symbolic meanings and signifies loved ones are still with us after they pass away, bringing us a sign from heaven, encouraging us to move forward with acceptance and determination. Above all, the robin red breast symbolises passion, a new beginning, and re-birth. Therefore, if the bird flies into your life you will be blessed with happiness and joy. I take a lot of pleasure from feeding the birds, and this small task means so much to them as the winter weather can have a severe impact on them and they can use up to 10% of their body weight during one cold night, and unless able to feed well every day to replenish its reserves, a prolonged cold spell can be fatal. Once they know food is available, they will be back time and time again.

News Report from Councillor Charles Chapman for Ryde South Email:- Charles.Chapman@iow.gov.uk | Mobile number 07970 009608 It’s been an up and down time, and not only with the weather! I know of so many people who are very apprehensive about the future. People, of all ages and with differing jobs and roles in life. The young dental nurse, who recently contacted me, who is covering for other colleagues who cannot get into work, teachers who are doing their best for their pupils, shop workers who have so magnificently worked throughout this pandemic, without a break, often taking the brunt of customers fears and worries, bin workers collecting rubbish keeping our streets and homes clean, front line workers, who have worked tirelessly keeping us alive, business owners of all kinds, hospitality industry, which provides so many jobs on the island etc. I can only reiterate that, we can only work together and support each other in any way we can. I recently picked my grandchildren up from school and it was uplifting to witness the way these young children have blossomed since being back in school, with their friends. It reminds all of us to look out for neighbours and friend and perhaps to think before ordering online, as convenient as it can be, that we need to support our neighbourhood shops as this is where our children, will get work. It’s where our communities thrive, but there has to be a High Street left to employ people. For my Ward: Island Roads are still continuing with road works, repairs and where necessary resurfacing. Bennett Street is to be completely re-surfaced and hopefully will be finished by the end of November. We have issued letters 8
explaining what is being done, as it is a major construction and one that I have been lobbying for years as the concrete floating basis, built ages ago, has started to move. Sorry for the inconvenience, but it really will be worth it, once finished. The helpline contact number is 01983 822440. I am still actively lobbying for our street signs to be kept clean and repaired. There is nothing more annoying when you are looking for an address, then no signs or vandalised signs. Please let Island Roads know if this is the case in your area. British Legion: Remembrance Sunday 8th November at the Shrine in Lind Street. This year will be very different to previous years due to Government Compliance surrounding Covid-19 pandemic. There will be a service by the Branch Padre, standards will be present, and wreaths laid while observing the rule of 6 at all times. Dark night reminder: I been asked by the road safety group to make sure that you wear reflectors or light-coloured clothing when walking or cycling, at night. It is always surprising how quickly the dark nights take over. There is good news for Ryde with the multi-million pound boost for travel and public transport improvements in Ryde. This ambitious scheme will improve large sections of roads and transport in Ryde, including cycling and pedestrian areas. The entire length of the esplanade to Appley will be modernised to cater for all kinds of transport, including our legs. The pier scheme will provide a safe walking and cycling track along the length of the pier.
‘Bits & Blogs’
As the nights draw in nothing beats sitting down with a good book, but one better than that is a book written by a fellow Isle of Wighter… ‘Bits and Blogs’ is the work of Poppy Fields who moved to the Island permanently after being made redundant from her job of 25 years. Before that she lived between the Island and the mainland and her book follows the ups and downs of life, many of which we will all be able to relate to. Written as a collection of blogs her funny, light-hearted, emotive, and touching anecdotes about her life can be enjoyed and they also make it easy for the reader to dip in and out of this entertaining book. Poppy is just a typical wife and grandmother who now works part time in Morrisons. She shares colourful stories about several weird and wonderful episodes in her life H.G.M – from the day-to-day quandaries of a Harbour Garden Maintenance middle-aged, bingo-loving, accident-prone, hot-tub-dipping, sweet-fanatic mother, Gardening • Hedge Trimming her continuous battle with her weight Garden Clearance (and frustrations with Fat Clubs!), and Patio/Drive washes a very Sober October to raise money for Fencing & repairs/painting Macmillan in memory of her dear late 07547 617513 friend. Along with her love and pride for Hgm1979iow@gmail.com her close-knit family, and an abundance of Hgm Hgm hilarious moments that will literally have you laughing out loud, the author also reflects “An excellent team on some poignant offering an and sad times in her invaluable service” life that will resonate NEW! Just like that October is behind us. Heading into winter is always a daunting time for shops and hospitality, but none more so than this year. With businesses having lost months of trading time to Covid, and the continued uncertainty it is very much a rocky road ahead, demonstrated UK wide with the loss of several of the multi nationals. Yet, in Ryde we are seeing a mini uprising from our local independent businesses. Lockdown saw shops, café’s and restaurants investing in websites to provide click & collect and delivery services. Embracing an online presence to showcase products and keep in touch with customers has increased. Well demonstrated by local shops like Bellissima and Sugar & Spice Lingerie based in Union St. They are doing weekly live streams for people to tune into every Wednesday – creating an interactive ‘shop window’ that customers can engage with from the comfort of their own home. We have local pubs, like The Solent Inn, Monkton St, investing in cosy blankets, so their customers can continue to make the most of the outdoor seating and social distancing even on chillier days, and bars and restaurants continuing to diversify menus and entertainment to attract new customers whilst continuing to manage restrictions. We even have brand new businesses opening including, Pickle & Dill who will be bringing a fantastic range of food & drink as a new deli on Union St, Isle of Wool are opening at 2 High St providing yarns and craft materials, and it is wonderful to see Vegan Craft Pizza opening their own café on the Esplanade, after providing a pop up service during lock down. Although none of us are certain what the next few weeks/months will bring, we are confident that with your support, Ryde will still be standing and open for business.

News Report from Wootton Bridge Councillor Barry Abraham 07800736557 | Email:- barry.abraham@iow.gov.uk As we turned from summer to autumn the weather has been very kind, so much different than last year, which was so wet right through until the spring. Although Storm Alex did its best to make the start of October so wet with 1.25 inches of rain falling across the whole of the UK. We are told this is a record for one day since 1891. October has over the years, had some extreme weather, as I write we have just celebrated 33 years since the great storm of 1987, what a night that was! We lost several large oak trees across the farm and three big macrocarpa trees that had been a feature of the Wootton Bridge skyline for the best part of 100 years as old postcards of the bridge looking east can attest to. Fortunately, no serious damage was done apart from taking down the power cables and a very big hole in the ground and the landscape changed for years to come. I have been asked several times as a councillor to support tree planting schemes on the Island which I have done, and Wootton has benefited from such projects. So, despite all the damage caused by the great storm, some good came from it. Residents of Gravel Pit Road and Red Road have received letters that their household waste would no longer be collected from the front of their properties if they did not fill in the potholes on the roads. I have tried to help residents find the owners of private roads, many are not registered at the land registry and it becomes almost impossible to prove who owns the road, some residents own the road directly outside of their house to the middle of the road but other parts of the road, the deeds are lost or in a cupboard somewhere and never see the light of day. 14
Because of the situation, Parliament in the 2000’s held an enquiry into the state of private/unadopted roads and moved the liability from un-found owners to the frontages themselves. I have offered to help where I am able and I had a zoom meeting with Red Road residents recently to go through the main issues which are health and safety related, hopefully the issues can be resolved and the waste collections can continue as before. One thing that has been highlighted is that residents, either because of disability or age-related illnesses, may be entitled to an assisted collection, meaning the waste will be collected from your house. If you think you might be entitled to an assisted collection, contact the council or contact me. The Covid pandemic is on the rise again, thankfully the Island rate remains low and hopefully will remain so. It has been suggested that social distancing dots should be placed on the pavement outside the takeaways and chemist on the High Street, my view is very much that people are aware of the rules and in the main abide by them and there is no need for them and in any case, who is going to enforce them? It really is coming to a sad state if we have to employ people to tell you where you have to stand! Take care and remain safe. Please do not forget if you have an issue with the council, please give me a telephone call on 07800736557 or email: barry.abraham@IOW.gov.uk.
