John has served as organist at Ryde Parish Church for over twenty years and was chairman of the Isle of Wight Festival of Music, Drama and Dance for thirteen years. In retirement on the Isle of Wight, John has found the time to write his first book, The Vackie Heroes, based loosely on his time as an evacuee in 1941–2 in Ilfracombe, a place which holds many happy memories for him even of those dark days.

Report from IW Councillor for Ryde North East - Wayne Whittle, Hunters Way, Binstead Hill, Ryde, PO33 3RP. Tel 07792 670771 E: wayne.whittle@iow.gov.uk Twitter @RydeAbide It was nice to see our Town, seafront & beaches enjoyed by visitors & residents during the School Summer Holidays this year, its almost a shock with a quiet Esplanade now as the Holidays are over. It was without a doubt the best summer holiday weather, Ryde has enjoyed for years, let’s hope its the shape of things to come. The Ryde Beach Lifeguards were busy this year and did a fine job treating, assisting and rescuing bathers on a few occasions. I’m pleased to report the Beach and Esplanade was kept clean and tidy throughout with many visitors impressed with its quality and condition (although there were a few complaints of litter in my adjoining Ward Appley), many were also impressed with the floral displays in Ryde (I hope we win a few of the in bloom awards). The most prevalent complaint I received this summer was about the loss of Ryde Deckchairs as many elderly visitors need and expect somewhere to sit when visiting the Beach.
to put in place new arrangements for the four still unfunded crossings in Ryde. I’m disappointed to report residents who live around Canoe Lake & Esplanade have suffered an extremely noisy and unsettled summer with lots of late night antisocial driving, loud exhausts and music from offending vehicles that make North Walk their base late into the early hours night after night during the summer. They all rightly repeatedly reported the goings on to myself and the Police and continued to do so, but I was disappointed that despite the many reported incidents no CCTV camera was provided as a way to deter the late night racing and antisocial behaviour. We have had the CCTV pole camera put on North Walk in the past when this type of activity has flared up. I will be taking up this problem and the many local burglaries around Nelson Street and adjoining area to the next police action group.
There are still many local residents left angry and frustrated with the long term dumped/ The Carnival pleased many with all three parked cars around the ward, I would ask processions returning to their original you all to report these vehicles to me (make, consecutive dates also gaining the Funfair model, colour and registration) if they are still once again, it was sad the illuminated there and I will continue to pursue action. procession suffered at the hands of the wet Until we get the much needed and repeatedly weather but 2 out of 3 isn’t bad. requested limited waiting time restrictions and resident permit parking zones around I’m glad Ryde Arena is now fully open again our residential Streets this local problem will with Ryde Town Council generously providing persist. over 10k for new refrigeration equipment. We should soon be hearing from the I was also pleased that fellow Ryde Town Environment Agency about how things are Council Members voted to fund the School going with the funding requests for the much lollipop crossing patrols whilst work continues needed Monkton Mead flood prevention 4 project, let’s hope they have been successful.

Shanthi Peace, Rest, Calmness and Tranquillity… These are feelings that each of us should embrace on a daily basis but in todays hectic lifestyle they are sometimes hard to achieve, Carla Fisher, owner of Shanthi, a new businesses which has recently opened in Wootton is very familiar with these feelings as for the past 10 years Carla has been training in Reiki and Crystal Therapy and can apply these natural therapies to people and animals. Reiki is a gentle hands on therapy that was developed in Japan in the late nineteenth century with its aim to access the universal life energy, which brings balance to the mind, body and spirit. Reiki is not connected to any religious beliefs and does not replace medical treatment but works alongside traditional and western medicine. Crystal Therapy is an ancient healing system concerned with treating patients holistically through the precise placement of crystals and minerals on or around a fully clothed person to induce a deep relaxation, release stress and pain and to promote energy balance with the physical and subtle bodies. Gutter Clutter We are now into Autumn and the leaves will be falling from the trees and they could potentially be falling into and blocking your gutters which in turn could make your insurance null and void as most insurers now claim that gutter clearing falls under general maintenance and is something that should be looked at regularly. When your guttering is blocked the rain water will over flow and will eventually cause damage to the structural elements of the building, water will erode the building material and can ultimately cause damage to the foundations, drainage system and the paving. Internally, damp will appear and create mold and mildew that is not only bad for the building but also your health. Having your gutter cleared once a year will significantly reduce the risk of any blockages caused by leaves, moss or any other debris. This means that the water from your roof will flow directly to the drainage system and away from your property reducing the risks of damage to your property. Island Garden Timber Care offer the latest technology in gutter clearing saying goodbye to costly scaffolding and ladders their hi tech powered vacuum with portable video camera allows them to survey and clean gutters from ground level. Island Garden Timber Care also offer a patio, path and driveway cleaning and can get them looking like new again and they can also apply an appropriate high grade sealer which will make future maintenance much easier. News Report from Cllr Michael Lilley – Green Councillor for Ryde East Ward Email: michaellilleyiow@gmail.com or call/text 07769551578 October is now upon us and we are heading towards Christmas. My main focus this month is raising the issues of older residents of Ryde as October is Celebrating Age month, campaigning against the poor roads and road infrastructure of the town, raising awareness of the importance of school crossings and road safety, questioning the need for proposed housing developments on green sites, and celebrating local life-saving heroes/heroines.
which will eventually go to Ryde Town Council for discussion with recommendations and proposals to make Ryde more accessible and friendly for its older residents.
Need Help to Plan Your Journey to a Mainland Hospital - People Matters IW are part of the Age Friendly Island Campaign and have a project funded by the Lottery which provides practical information about travel During the last 3 weeks, I have presented £100 options and costs for those of us who have to attend appointments at mainland hospitals. each to DASH (formerly IW Women’s Refuge), Ryde Food Bank, and In-Shore Rescue and wish Please call or email 01983-821000 ext: 2838. to highlight these organisations as local heroes/ 9.00 to 1.00pm weekdays travelchoices@ peoplematteriw.org. The volunteers at www.peoplematteriw.org/travel who keep these important charities/projects going selflessly support others every day and I Save Westridge Farm (Hope Road) Campaign, was honoured to thank them. Scarecrows, Bats, and other Developments As reported previously, Ryde Town Council had Age Friendly Island & Celebrating Age Month recommended against approval of planning - October is National Celebrating Age Month and in September I went to my second meeting permission for Hope Road development for 80 houses on an active dairy farm. The application as a Ryde Age Friendly Champion along with is now due for a decision by IW County Council Cllr Karen Lucioni and Cllr David Woodward Planning Committee but at the earliest this will at St. John’s Church, High Park Road. One of be 20th October 2016 and could be postponed the first priorities for the Ryde Age Friendly further as Planning Officers are asking the Steering Group has been to explore how we can improve access for frail and older residents developer for further reports on wildlife particularly bats. Local residents are keeping who need support for the areas of Ryde they up the campaign against the development can benefit from. We are looking at working by making colourful scarecrows and putting with Isle Access on initially mapping the need of older residents in Ryde East, Ryde South, and them up in front of their homes. Some of the Scarecrows have slogans such as “700 years of Ryde North-West Wards. farming on this land could be lost” and “Only 10 dairy farms left on IOW”. See the Westridge I am speaking to many local older residents Farm Facebook page for up-to-date details who have a range of mobility and disability and pictures of scarecrows. www.facebook. issues and how they find it difficult to at times walk down the street as cars are parked on the com/savewestridgefarm pavements, there is no road by their house Rosemary Vineyard, Sharon’s Vineyard, and so they have to go onto the road in their wheelchair, and due to sight issues cannot see surrounding land on Ashey and Smallbrook Roads, are being developed and a planning overgrown hedges which hit them in the face. application is pending. This site has significant As a Ryde Age Friendly Champion I am ecological significance. gathering these stories to be part of a report
News Report from Cllr Michael Lilley Roads – Speed, non-resident parking and poor road conditions - As reported last month, I am still getting contacted by residents in Ryde East about the state of the roads, parking by nonresidents and the speed of some drivers on a daily basis. This increased greatly when a burst water main happened on Great Preston Road which was delayed in repair due to Island Roads tarmacking across the water valves. I have put in a Ryde East formal complaint to Island Roads on the overall state of the roads and asked for an up to date audit on the roads in the Ward. This is a priority for me and I am starting a series of walks in the Ward to record the state of roads and discuss with local residents on what needs to be done. I am also writing to the Police Superintendent on the Island about the Speed of cars on Marlborough, High Park and Great Preston Roads. I am still trying to get a Speed Watch project set up. Saving Children’s Lives – The importance of School Crossings & Dangers of Traffic - Ryde Town Council voted at its September meeting to provide £10,000 to keep 4 school patrols going in Ryde that were cut by Isle of Wight County Council. The Council felt that it could not risk the possibility of a child losing their life whilst trying to find a long-term solution. One of the patrols is for Oakfield School and the High Park Road Crossing. Many local residents have spoken to me about the increasing danger of the High Park/St.John’s/East Hill/Appley Road junction and the Marlborough/Appley Road junctions and how the speed of traffic is increasing, how parked cars are blocking view, the increase in lorry traffic, and the difficulties of crossing points. We need a whole review of the walk ways and crossing to Oakfield School. There is a pelican crossing but many do not use it. Many children walk to school on their own and without attendance of a school patrol, an accident could happen. I was glad to vote with other Councillors on making sure the patrols continue but want to see a long-term plan for Oakfield School.
