Welcome to the October issue of Island Magazines and you are probably, like me, wondering where the time has gone and how could we be in Autumn already! The weather has changed recently and you can feel the chill in the air especially early morning and in the evening although we have still had some nice sunny days. If you are a dog owner you’ll be pleased to know that from the 1st October our little furry four legged friends can once again play on the beaches that were out of bounds to them during the summer season. I know my own little dog Alfie, will be excited by this news. October is a bit quieter on the events side than previous months but there is still plenty happening across the Island and you can find all the information in our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 10 and 11. If you have an event happening please feel free to email the details for inclusion in future issues. Once again this issue is packed with news and information and I hope you enjoy reading it. Until next month....

The newly suggested boundaries are interesting Perfect weather, we won the most popular to say the least with my ward “Ryde North carnival award and it was the largest carnival East” being divided into 3 and a new Ward I’ve seen for years with the best turnout of with a suggested name “Ryde Central” being spectators to watch it. introduced running from Dover Street to Cornwall Slip and extending back to Well I was talking to 3 families who had come Street following the Monkton Brook south over from Portsmouth on Thursday morning and it’s Solent boundary includes only the (main Carnival day) for 4 days to watch Ryde Harbour and harbour beach. News Report from - Cllr Wayne Whittle continued Lastly I was very disappointed after spending months working with the police and Island Roads researching much needed new mobile CCTV cameras that Ryde Town Council could own and deploy at hotspots around Ryde with police agreement after discovering our existing Islands CCTV cameras were in short supply due to the fact that although the PFI contract deployed and monitored them it did not have allocated funds to replace worn out cameras and I had found it impossible to get cameras in my ward at the request of residents for 2 years. My disappointment was because the paper that went to RTC that set out the type and costs of 2 cameras was criticised as an infringement on public life (big brother watching you) and ineffective by the Chairman of planning and then voted down, the icing on the cake came when the same chairman proposed RTC purchase 16 iPad’s to make councillors more professional at a cost of almost 5k at the next meeting?? Priorities need adjusting in my view. I will be seeking member support to get the CCTV camera paper back on a future RTC agenda. Best regards

Wayne

say on the boundaries, please go to https://consultation. lgbce.org.uk/node/12655 have your say! Whatever the outcome be assured YOUR VOICE COUNTS and I will endeavour to still ask your views and represent you all, whatever ward I stand in.

Ryde Access Advisory Panel I am very honoured to be part of this panel; the Ryde Access Advisory Panel is a consultative mechanism to ensure the views of disabled people are considered when Ryde Town Council is assessing proposed projects.

Council Agenda I have been part of a few controversial issues that I have had to vote with integrity on. First being, should we (Ryde Town Council) buy new iPads for all 16 councillors because of the new GDPR rules and the other approving some funds to buy moveable CCTV to cover problem areas. I have voted against the iPads and for the CCTV.

Accessibility to any new buildings or services for example. Suggesting improvements that would have a huge impact on the life of residents and tourists. This is an Isle Access project and I am extremely supportive of them and all that they do. If you would like to attend or have your views represented, please get in touch. I will put the dates of the next meeting on my website. If you do not have access to a computer, please let me know and I will keep you informed.

I did try to ask as many of you as possible how you felt about these issues beforehand. I represented those views which most of you expressed. I have taken GDPR training a few times now and done extensive research and will not be convinced the town council needs to supply all 16 councillors with iPads to be compliant. I do believe we would as a town be helped by moveable CCTV to tackle those areas not only solve to solve crime, but to deter Boundaries Commission it. I would urge you all to take time to look At present the commission is not only at our agendas and if there is an item you looking at the parliamentary seats for the have a view about please me know, so I can Island but also the local election wards. Hares aren’t the only topic of Nick’s amazing photography skills and his website www. wightseen.co.uk is home to his collection of pictures of varied subjects captured here on our beautiful Island. His prints are also available to purchase via Available Light Gallery in St Thomas Square, Newport. All of Nick’s photographs are amazing but I am particularly drawn to his hares as there is something captivating and mystical about them. We were lucky enough to feature one of his pictures on the front cover of the October issue last year too... I can’t wait to see what he will pull out the bag for next year. Diary of a Yoga Journey I’ve started on a journey... I’ve been wanting to take this journey for years and I am always mumbling my favourite mantra ‘I really want to learn yoga’. I normally say it most when things in my life aren’t going to plan which in my case is when I am feeling unwell and stressed. I have been suffering from back pain, I’m not alone in this common complaint but something changed this day and I finally pulled my finger out and have done something about it – I did some research, I asked around, and then I made the phone call to a friend of a friend who is a yoga teacher and there ladies and gentleman is how I have taken the first steps on my journey. We have discussed what I want from yoga, how I envisage it fitting in my life, my goals and much more. I have opted for one to one lessons and this is down to my own personal preference as I don’t feel ready to attend a class with others just yet, but never say never! My instructor Nickie Short is going to be by my side every step of the way and already I have learnt some new tools to help me manage and deal with everyday stresses. I have so far experienced how to connect and encourage my body to relax whilst being aware of my breathing and learning how to control it for a better quality of breath. Simple stretches for the lower back and learning how to synchronise breath and movement will help me with the back pain. We also covered awareness of posture and how being aware of my feet and waking them up can improve posture and balance. I feel my first lesson has gone really well and Nickie has sent me notes with instructions of everything we covered so I can carry on the good work at home. Already I am counting down the days until our next meeting. If I remind you of yourself then please do as I have done and take the first step. It seems more daunting than it really is. Call Nickie Short on 07799 032824 for a relaxed chat and visit her website www.yogaisleofwight.co.uk for more information how you too could benefit.
