Welcome and thank you for picking up a copy of Island Magazines. We are now into the autumn months and no doubt like many you have been busy packing away the summer wardrobe and unpacking boots, jumpers and coats in preparation of the crisp mornings that will soon be upon us.
text or call Island Magazines on 07880 587 931
Autumn is one of my favourite times of the year and we are very lucky living here with the countryside on our doorstep and amazing scenery that changes with each season. For dog owners its great news as it means our furry little friends are now allowed to play on all the beaches around the island. Halloween is at the end of the month and although the island is slowing down after summer there are still events happening and you can find our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 10, 11 and 12. You will find the latest news and information for your area inside along with some great local businesses advertising their services. I hope you all have a great month and I look forward to catching up with you soon.

News Report from Wootton Bridge Councillor Barry Abraham 07800736557 | Email:- barry.abraham@iow.gov.uk As we move into autumn, mid-September gave us some lovely weather during the day and as I write we are a week away from the autumn equinox so more darkness than daylight for a few months.
The council is now looking at all the evidence why they are unable to meet the housing numbers and are ever likely to do so, given that we are an Island. With this evidence the administration believes it can make a case to central government for a Last month I wrote about the release of the much lower target and concentrating on White Tailed Sea Eagles and I was intrigued the delivery of more affordable housing recently to learn that one had made its that is undelivered for our Island people way to Essex via London and the Thames, constantly on the housing register. My cabinet work on the Island plan is on-going and it is fair to say there is a lot of public concern regarding the housing numbers imposed by government housing targets. The council, as planning authority, has not met the targets for the last three years, despite giving outline permissions that could have delivered them. In fact the council has never met government housing numbers under the present planning policy, the Island Core Strategy. 4
With the onset of dark and colder weather, we need to be aware of our older residents, many of whom live on their own and maybe struggling and need help. If you are aware of anyone, do let me know and I can make the relevant officers know so they can get the help they may need to keep them in their own home. If you have an issue with the council, please get in contact with me.

I believe that Island people deserve to be listened to and have their issues represented properly to government by putting Island People First and at the centre of democracy. I would vote for the needs of our Island People, be transparent, inclusive and community focused.
I believe that our Health & Wellbeing comes first and that Education can be used to bring change, positivity, employment and reward. We need more NHS and Teaching staff to reduce waiting times and raise education standards. I believe that our island is changing for the better and that we continue to work together within communities to change attitudes, support one another and create our own destinies. Regeneration is not just about building houses it’s about creating better employment opportunities, family choices, mental health and environment matters and it requires improved investment. News Report from Cllr Wayne Whittle. Tel 07792 670771 Twitter @RydeAbide E wayne.whittle@iow.gov.uk The methodology and Parking service officer Tracey complete comprehensive Cunningham carried out a Resident findings of level 1. and 2. Parking Survey of Ryde North East over were presented along with the course of 2 months during the the report to the Ryde North East Action summer. The survey investigated all Group Meeting on the 10th September at levels of eligibility for Belvedere Street, the Simeon Arms. Daniel Street, Dover Street, Monkton Street, and Winton Street along with 2 Following the assessment of off-street extra streets that had been requested to be added by Heath Monaghan at the 21st parking availability and parking stress levels it was recommended that resident May NERAG meeting, Trinity Street (from Wood Street to Melville Street) and Wood parking schemes are put to the resident vote in Daniel Street and Wood Street. Street. There were 3 distinct layers to facilitate the scheme moving forward ... 1. Current off Street Parking That that no more than 50% of car owning residents have or could have parking available within the curtilage of their own property, Or within 200 meters walking distance by way of garage or private off street parking. 2. Current Parking levels That there should not be less than 75% of the available kerbside space occupied during the identified core hours of 8am - 6pm Monday to Saturday inclusive (although in our case Sunday was included). 3. Majority support from residents That if 1. and 2. are successful a full consultation by IWC will be carried out and if it returns an excess of 50% of the total number of residents in that location along with those who are directly affected vote in favour of the new scheme being implemented (ie a clear majority will need to issue a mandate to proceed, as well as considering any special circumstances that may present themselves). 8
Although Winton Street did not meet the criteria, if Monkton Street residents vote in favour of a scheme and displacement factors affect Winton Street, Winton Street will be revisited for a further parking stress survey. I would like to point out that if any supported resident parking scheme affects further streets, a new parking stress survey will be carried out if later requested on those impacted streets. It’s been a long journey for the residents of Ryde North East and will be interesting what requested outcome returns from the vote. If you would like to discuss the scheme or just need further information you can contact tracey.cunningham@iow.gov.uk or call her on 01983 821000 extension 6699. I’m pleased to say I supported a successful vote at RTC full council meeting in September to invest in a Ryde Place Plan, the Newport Place plan has proven a useful tool to accompany Government Grant funding bids, we hope to have a Ryde one completed in the New Year.

News Report from Ryde Town Councillor Karen Lucioni Email: karen.rydesouth@mail.com | Mobile 07506930109 www.facebook.com/yourvoicecountsryde I am disappointed to have to tell you that the Ward I have been elected in twice since 2013 is disappearing in 2021, I will continue to represent you all until that time. I am giving those that are interested the website that you can see the new ward boundaries, you will be able to look and see what area your home will sit in. I will have to stand in a different ward in May 2021. https:// consultation.lgbce.org.uk/node/12655 A while ago I brought a motion to Ryde town council to look at being able to have some deployable cameras for trouble hotspots. A lot of work has gone into collating the information on how we could move forward, however with the staff being cut from the control room, we have had to take a few steps back. I believe the police had not been consulted when the decision was made, and I am told that some manpower has been put back in. I am still hoping that this project can happen and keeping a very close eye on how we can move forward. In September I was looking forward to meeting the Police and crime commissioner, however it was cancelled due to his ill health. I had asked a few questions regarding the policing of our town. I was hoping to let you know the response to those questions in this report however I will update you as soon as I can. Thank you to all those who got involved with The Respect Ryde Project beach clean for Isle of Wight day, also those businesses that donated prizes for the most plastic collected. Another gentle reminder not to park on pavements, in front of driveways and or park disabled bays in residential areas if
you do not have a blue badge. I am aware that we need look after our, children, elderly, sensory impaired and disabled. Please think when parking - can people pass safely? The new traffic lights are up and running, if anyone has any questions please do give me a call. The sensor to change the lights is just before the stop line. So, you need to be parked on this, no going over the white line as you may not activate them, the lights will only work if they know a car is waiting. This includes motor bikes and cycles. You will clearly see the sensors as they are darker than the road. With Halloween coming up please be mindful and respectful when out with your children, try to make sure you know who is taking part in your street and not bother those others where knocking on their door may bother or upset them. Be safe and have fun time together. Remember the applications date for applying for a grant from Ryde Town Council closes on the 11th October and forms can be found on the councils website www.rydetowncouncil.org.uk under council services. Union Street parking, please be aware that there will be one-hour parking 7 days a week and one zone for the length of the street, so no more jumping from one side of the street to another to get long parking. I am hopeful this will help to keep our high streets going as they need all the support they can get. Shop Local, support Ryde. Remember that the petition I delivered to the IW Council last November managed to keep this one hour free for us all.
Early Detection Gives You a Fighting Chance One man dies every 45 minutes (around 11,800 men every year) from prostate cancer and it is now the leading cancer found in men but statistics show that if caught in the early stages, treatment is 80% effective. Mention the words Prostate Cancer and PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) Testing and most men will immediately conjure up an invasive and embarrassing testing procedure but in reality it is a simple blood test that is pain free and takes less than 5 minutes This simple BLOOD TEST measures the amount of antigen produced by the prostate entering the blood. It is not a diagnostic/direct test for cancer, but gives an indicator of the health of the prostate. Regular testing showing an increasing reading can indicate a prostate problem, a high reading should trigger further tests to determine if there is a need for any treatment. Unfortunately despite the increasing number of prostate cancer diagnosis and mortality, there is not a regular screening test, and some GP’s are reluctant to offer a PSA test to men over 50 years. Without screening, around 47,000 men are diagnosed General symptoms with prostate cancer each year. of problems with
