Another month has passed, and our summer was extended with some beautiful sunny days in September. As I write this the sun is still shining but there is now a definite nip in the air both early in the morning and late in the evening showing us that Autumn is here. Autumn is a great season and I always use the time to have a good clear out when putting away the summer clothes and bringing out jumpers and boots. The island is a great place for autumnal walks, and we get to see the countryside change with the season. This is also the time of year when you need to give yourself a health check to get you through the next few months. As well as Covid hanging around, now is also the time when colds, coughs and flu viruses are looking for their next victims. On page 7 you will find some top tips on how you can help yourself and boost your immune system from local Nutritionist Michele Newton. Inside you will find the regular news reports and some interesting feature articles and advertisers. On pages 10 and 11 you will find the puzzle section, which is great for keeping your brain active especially while the nights are drawing in. I hope you enjoy reading this issue and I hope you all keep safe and well and I look forward to catching up with you again next month and in the meantime if you have any news you would like to share please do not hesitate to get in touch.

News Report from Councillor Charles Chapman for Ryde South Email:- Charles.Chapman@iow.gov.uk | Mobile number 07970 009608 We have now moved into Autumn: It’s been a most peculiar year! One, which even the oldest of my Ward members, says the like of which, they have never experienced. A very important step back to normality was our children going back to school and the opening up, however limited, of social meeting places. During my years in Office I tried to support, encourage, and where possible, preserve various meeting places: be it art galleries, youth groups, pubs, coffee house, preschool clubs, lunch clubs etc. I have repeatedly gone on and on about the importance of such places. The importance of the internet and electronic links has never proved so vital or effective as during the ‘lockdown’. People have used, relied and experimented with friends and family over the internet. Online shopping has doubled and even quadrupled, already local shops have closed and giant delivery companies have increased their staff by thousands. We are all questioning when and if our High Street shops will fully return. The emphasis being on the IF. It’s up to us now how much of our future local services will survive. In fact, it’s up to you. I’m of the older generation and try to be open about what is needed for our local communities to flourish. I’m all for change but as the saying goes, ‘don’t throw out the baby with the bath water’. For our mental health we need places to meet, to shop, to talk, to socialise Change of subject… I would like to take this opportunity to thank our bin collectors who have carried on doing their job throughout this pandemic keeping our 4
streets and homes clear without any fuss or bother. I am always grateful, and stated so, to the many disciplines who worked so tirelessly throughout the months and continue to do so. In addition, I have sited Island Roads, our post service and, where possible, named others. It has been pointed to me out to that our rubbish collection force doesn’t always get the recognition that they deserve. It’s times like this that we need to recognise that we are dependent on each other for our society to flourish. Despite the ‘lockdown’ the Scooter Rally, held in Ryde, although much reduced in numbers, went well; it helped our local economy. As always, it was well organised, with some fine examples of motors and equipment. We have organised a ‘ride out’ and prize giving for as soon as possible next year and we all hope that ‘environmental circumstances’ allow it to take place. The Ryde Town and Parish Town Council have agreed to go forward with the purchase of St. Thomas’s Church. Many of you already use the gardens with its spacious and welcome open space at the top of Ryde High Street. It will provide additional services especially for our young people, as we have lost the battle over Wells Street Youth Club. It will provide a useful space as a gallery, indoor market and work area. It will bring an historic building back into public use as it is part of our heritage. It no longer has a spire, which I believe was removed sometime in the 19 century. Anybody who has any information or pictures about continued over the page
News Report from Councillor Charles Chapman for Ryde South the church and its spire, can you please drop them into the Ryde Town and Parish Council Office in Lind Street. I have been asked to remind you to download the NHS test and trace app which is free to download and to use. Please remember that it is for your smartphone so it’s with you as you move around. The app does not use GPS or record locations, so you cannot be tracked. I know that the latter concerned several of you, so I double checked its validity. On my usual Ward Walk, I reported subsidence in Harding Road and Great Preston Road and a number of potholes. I
have been told that the subsidence is being monitored and that the potholes will be filled. In the New Year I am looking at a mainland scheme which uses local volunteers to identify potholes and ensure that they do not get overlooked. I will keep you updated.

It’s Good to Have Them Back… It’s great to see the re-opening of The Friends of St Mary’s Hospital Shop. This wonderful community venture touches the lives of many. All the money they raise through the dedicated work of their volunteers is ploughed back into the hospital, buying vital equipment for patients and professionals. It’s been a tough year so far for the Friends, not just with Covid-19 but at the beginning of the year they were relocated from their prime position and had to basically start again. They may have been dealt a blow, but they have bounced back with even more determination. Their new shop is just past reception on the ground floor and not far from the main entrance to the Hospital. Over the years they have raised over £1.5 million and they want to keep building on this and desperately need your help. Please support them by using the shop at the hospital which is stocked full of goodies to tempt you - gifts, cards, news and snacks. They have not been able to re-open their cafes in outpatients, the Ryde Wellbeing Clinic and the Laidlaw Centre as Covid-19 has made this impossible for now. Their ward trolley service which also brought a smile to patients faces has also ceased operating and this has impacted hard on everyone. The staff and volunteers always remain positive and they hope that some time in the future they will be serving you tea and coffee again.
E A F
They look forward to welcoming you into the shop and please support where you can. You can also donate via the many collection boxes across the island. They have supported St Mary’s staff and patients for 32 years now and with your help they can keep on doing that for another 32!

Local business Four Seasons Cooking Academy is owned by nutritionist and food safety specialist Michele Newton and she has some wise words for us all… “The colder months are approaching and now is the time to get your immune system fired up to help you beat any seasonal viruses that will be lurking around and to give you a fighting chance to keep yourself healthy and ready to fight whatever is thrown at you” Michele has kindly put together a few immune boosting foods and health tips to get us going. You can find more information on the Four Seasons Cookery Academy Facebook page. Tip 1. Jumbo Oats topped with Berries and a small drizzling of local Honey will keep blood sugars stable for hours. Tip 2. Please, please take a supplement from now until March at least. Even more important now. Go for a top strength tablet or spray. Many of us are low in Vitamin D, even with the lovely weather we’ve enjoyed. Tip 3. At the first sign of a cold/sore throat, make our tried & tested ‘potion’. 1/2 tsp Turmeric mixed into a paste with half a squeezed lemon and a drizzle of (preferably local) honey. Add enough hot water to make a ‘shot’ and down the hatch! Take 3 shots per day. Tip 4. Sweet potatoes contain your full daily need of Vitamin A and a third of your vitamin C requirements. Delicious baked, they will also keep your blood sugars stable. Tip 5. Garlic not only strengthens the immune system, but also has antibacterial properties. Tip 6. Vitamin C is essential for a strong immune system. Our body doesn’t store or produce it so include a variety of items daily, such as oranges and orange juice, peppers, kiwi fruit, broccoli, blackcurrants, strawberries and bananas. Tip 7. Green tea - rich in antioxidants - substances that can slow - or prevent - damage to our cells. Try to have 2 cups a day. The mint flavoured one is lovely. Tip 8. Dark Chocolate (+70%) is superb for our immune system. It contains iron, magnesium, manganese, potassium, zinc and selenium - alongside being a powerful antioxidant. Melt a few squares into hot milk to make a delicious - and nutritious - hot chocolate. Tip 9. Kiwi fruit has a packed list of nutrients. Exciting studies are starting to show that 5 per week can reduce asthma induced wheezing. Wow! Tip 10. WELLBEING...... we have all been sorely ‘tested’ this year and this lowers our immune systems for sure. Talk to family/friends about how you’re feeling; exercise and try to take each day as it comes.

News Report from Wootton Bridge Councillor Barry Abraham 07800736557 | Email:- barry.abraham@iow.gov.uk Well here we go again, we are told that another wave of Covid is just around the corner, the government and councils across the country are being locked down in a hope of stopping the virus in its tracks. On the Island we have a small increase in numbers but by the time you read this who knows where we will be.
One of the biggest issues raised with me is work to trees, they may be subject to a tree preservation order (TPO), again check with planning. It is better to make the call or go online than have to suffer the stress after the work has be carried out. It is also a good idea to talk to your neighbour about what you intend to do.
The council continues with its monitoring of the situation and how the virus impacts on its services and public health remains at the forefront of offering advice on what to do to remain safe. What we do not need at the same time, conflicting advice that keeps coming from various parts of UK government. If this is a national emergency, as I believe it is, then there should be a governing body overseeing the countries response and not politicians trying to outdo each other which seems to be happening at present.
This time of the year is when the council starts to look at its budgets for the coming year. Covid has had an impact on its existing year’s budget so potential shortfalls have to be looked at which are many, despite extra government support for some areas. The council is also looking at its recovery plan for the Island for the next year. So will be lobbying government for extra resources to get the island and community back together.
I will now get off my soapbox! There are again no large planning applications coming forward for Wootton, just small householder applications. During the lockdown there has been a number of complaints to planning enforcement about work being carried out by residents to their homes and gardens to the annoyance of their neighbours. If you do intend to do work to your house or garden, check first with planning to make sure no permission is needed, some work is permitted but might need building control permission. If this process is not followed it might come back to bite you in the future if you ever want to sell your property. 8
One of the side effects for me of the virus is having so many meetings on zoom or teams, rather than having a meeting face to face, is the impact on my eyes. It makes them dry and sore and it certainly does nothing for your posture, slumped over a laptop all day. To change the subject, we are having a wonderful autumn at the moment, all the hedgerows are a glorious sight and a fantastic larder full of seeds and berries, all brightly coloured, for the small birds that rely on them to get through the winter months ahead and there has not been so many acorns on the oak trees for a number of years. Also on the farm we have a hedgerow that has a nice thick area of hazel which has continued over the page
News Report from Wootton Bridge Councillor Barry Abraham had a good crop of nuts. It is always nice to see the squirrels making the most of them but to me more importantly, there is plenty of evidence to see where the dormice have been although rarely seen, it’s just wonderful knowing they are there. Take care and remain safe. Please do not forget if you have an issue with the council, please give me a telephone call on 07800736557 or email: barry.abraham@IOW.gov.uk.

News Report from Cllr Wayne Whittle. Tel 07768 118766 Twitter @RydeAbide E wayne.whittle@iow.gov.uk Whilst writing it has been a lovely September so far and I enjoyed watching some classic cars turning up on North Walk, for what should have been classic Car Extravaganza day but was, yet another great IW cancelled event.
Many different species of migrating bird are beginning to return to our beaches and we even attracted new Barnacle Geese to the Canoe Lake this summer, can hear quite a few new bird calls early in the morning
Just like some scooterists found, their forward booked Island accommodation for the 2020 event were still in place, so can’t blame anyone for honouring those bookings and if nothing else, the few that come kept the spirit of the event alive in our memory.
As the beach slowly returns to its wild self, its great fun coming out with binoculars and doing a spot of bird watching.
I’m pleased to see the visit IW bid to UK Cabinet office was successful and has injected 80,000 pounds worth of social media and targeted Sky TV advertising to over 50’s for September and October, going out Nationally within a 200 mile radius. It is the most resource ever spent on advertising our Island as an autumn destination and with the fair weather this has appeared to have worked so far. I’ve even seen some new coach companies turning up in Quay Road Car Park, let’s hope it continues to successfully promote our island as a top class destination Here’s the link to watch the Sky TV advert if you haven’t seen it already https://youtu.be/s2_TtKwIqOM Well done Visit IW on doing such a good job for IW PLC during such challenging times.

I have been assisting local residents in getting the memorial plaque in the Memorial Gardens maintained, the black inside the etched letters has faded leaving the story of the Royal George sinking hard to read. I will be taking this up with council officers and southern Water as an attempt to find out who’s responsibility the maintenance contract falls under. I cheered on and met the cyclists at the Western Gardens on Saturday 5th September who took part in a 6,700km, 64-day ride around Britain that started and ended in Ryde, raising money for charities. Look forward to our Island hosting the final leg of the Tour of Britain in October 2022, that will start in sunny Ryde.

One client said: “Maggie intuitively knew that the path I was on wasn’t the way I truly wanted to go. She allowed me to see that my passions were elsewhere and opened my mind to the possibilities ahead of me. I changed my path and have never looked back. Maggie was totally right.” There is no such thing as a FREE seminar. There are many ‘coaches’ out there who will try and sell you their latest programme which is allegedly for your benefit. A lot of these people are actors and accomplished sales people. Rest assured Maggie is none of those things. FIVER FEST RYDE Ryde will once again be taking part in ‘NATIONAL FIVER FEST’ which runs from the 10th-24th October. Businesses around the town will be offering incentives to spend a fiver, as that’s all it takes weekly to make a real difference to our local economy. The FIVER FEST campaign sets out to reinforce the message that local people, shopping little and often in their town is what helps to keep things going. For Ryde if every adult committed to this each week, £2.7 million would be generated for the town…and the best bit is, when this is spent in the independent businesses, a significant amount more of that money stays local. Look out for the Fiver Fest posters at participating businesses.
