utumn is approaching and the island is a beautiful place to be during this season. The changes in nature will be visible around every corner and there are so many wonderful walks to enjoy. You really can’t beat island life!

The island has been very busy this year with visitors from the mainland, some are regulars, but many have ventured here for the first time, and I am constantly hearing how lucky we are to live here, to have this on our doorsteps every day... but it does make me wonder if having it here right under our noses we forget the beauty and just take it for granted. I am now going to go about my business with my eyes slightly wider open to take in all the beauty that is right here in front of me. In this issue you will find local news and information for your area, mixed with advertising, features, editorials and of course our puzzle pages which I know many of you are a big fan of. As always thank you for picking up a copy and I’d love to hear your thoughts on anything featured in this month’s issue and please do get in touch with me if you have any news to share or are organising an event. I hope you have a safe and happy month and I look forward to catching up with you again soon.

News Report from Cllr Phil Jordan - Ryde North West. Tel: 07929 376375 | Email: phil.jordan@iow.gov.uk As the last days of high summer hang on to the possibility of an Indian summer and a shortening of winter, Ryde welcomed on a glorious weekend in the middle of September, the Classic Car show’s return to the seafront. After the postponement of the event last year due to covid, hundreds of examples of a broad range of classic and historic vehicles lined the Esplanade area and a fantastic crowd of people turned up to experience and enjoy this free show. In the past, this show was split between Newport and Ryde but after months of negotiations with the organisers the show is now committed to two full days in Ryde for the next five years at least. Plans to return with the show have already begun and when dates are known for next year the information will be published widely. On October 14th, the IWC Cabinet will discuss and decide on the Ryde Interchange scheme. With much local interest and a wide-ranging support for the scheme the recent public consultation has delivered some good ideas that have been considered and improvements to the overall scheme have been planned. The project is part of a £56m Portsmouth, Hampshire and Isle of Wight transport scheme funded by the Dept of Transport to deliver sustainable transport and improved connectivity between the mainland and Ryde and onwards on the Island. The £56m grant funding has been enhanced with joint funding of £30m from private transport providers. In addition to the scheme, the IWC have begun plans to enter an enhanced bus partnership with bus service providers and in turn will be bidding from a £3bn

Government funding pot to improve all aspects of bus travel across the Island working with providers to identify and deliver a better offer and experience for passengers and potential bus users. The funding starts in March 2022. Ryde harbour, along with Eastern Gardens, is still on course for transfer to Ryde Town Council in March 2022 and there is scheduled dredging of three 500 cubic metres of sand from the harbour by the IWC to assist with entry and exit issues experienced earlier this year. The 1500 cubic metre removal of sand is the maximum allowed under emergency powers, but Ryde Town Council have built into their 5 years business plan a capital dredge in year one of ownership alongside improvements to the pontoons and facilities to improve the overall harbour experience over the five-year period. In all, Ryde Town Council plans to invest around £300,000 in total which will be covered by harbour incomes from annual moorings and visitors alike. A new facility is planned for harbour offices and for toilets and showers subject to planning consents and that will be embarked upon once the harbour is transferred to Ryde Town Council. And finally, I am continually researching to find the best way of returning a dotto train to Ryde. I have said I would like this in place for next summer and I am looking towards an electric vehicle which could journey to the top of the High Street, down through the town and along the Esplanade. I know there is much support and nostalgia for such a dotto train and I am determined to get one working in Ryde once again for the benefit of our resident community and for our visitors alike. Watch this space!

It’s Goatober The Isle of Wight’s very first Goatober launched in 2019, in an effort to raise awareness of goat meat, milk, cheese and fudge produced on the Island. Kingston Smallholding Goat Farm, Green Barn Dairy Goat Farm, plus several butchers, meat wholesalers and shops encouraged islanders and a wide range of catering outlets to add goat products to their menus throughout the month of October.

Goat is the most commonly eaten red meat in the world, as many cultures do not eat beef or pork. Goat meat makes up around 60% of the red meat produced worldwide and yet in countries such as the UK – where the wool and lamb trade has dominated – it has always been one of the much lesser consumed meats. However, because of increasing ethnic diversity it is starting to become far more readily available.

What is an Alzheimer Café? An Alzheimer Café is a meeting place that provides informal education and information about the issues surrounding dementia. Alzheimer Cafés welcome everyone who has an interest in dementia; people with dementia, their families and friends and people in the community, who would like to learn more about dementia. Alzheimer Cafés provide an informal, safe, and sensitive environment for, sharing feelings, giving, and receiving support and guidance, and provides the opportunity to make new friends with people in similar situations. Alzheimer Cafés have a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Each month there is a speaker who presents information on a dementia related subject, sometimes from another service, and welcomes professionals and visitors’ who provide updates and information on their areas of expertise. The Alzheimer Café Team will give you a warm welcome, ‘a listening ear’, provide refreshments and signpost people to other services and agencies, where appropriate, to access information and services.

News Report for Wootton Bridge from Cllr Daryll Pitcher Tel: 07511 045 145 | daryll@planetmail.net It has been a busy month with regards to planning. Wootton Bridge Parish council had to hold an extra meeting in order to meet deadlines regarding two planning applications. We took the opportunity to receive a presentation from James Brewer of the Planning staff regarding the Draft Island Planning Strategy. This document is very important as it will influence the type, location and number of houses built on the island for many years to come. I was keen that the Parish Council make a submission so that the views of Wootton Bridge could be heard and so I was very pleased that councillors had the chance to get an indepth explanation prior to deliberations on it. At the time of writing WBPC have not yet held their main meeting which will create the submission so I cannot give any details yet as to what has been put forward. One very important thing that Mr. Brewer mentioned was that it was in the interests of Wootton Bridge for our Housing Needs Survey to be up-to-date when the new Island Planning Strategy comes into effect. This should be towards the end of next year or in early 2023. As a result, WBPC are looking to update our Housing Needs Survey in about twelve months’ time. This was roughly when it would need doing anyway as the previous update was in 2018. On a similar note I was disappointed that a planning application came in for an area that is excluded from development in the new draft plan. I fear this was a factor in it being brought forward now under the old plan which does allow it. I would not be surprised if island wide other similarly excluded areas came forward prior to the new plan taking effect. 10

I recently had the pleasure of addressing the New Road Residents Association AGM. I was able to bring them up to speed on the latest developments and give advice on how we move forward in trying to get this road resurfaced. As mentioned previously there are complex issues to allowing the work to take place and these are being worked on. I am hopeful that I can get the Parish Council to help me secure Church Close Club. I am putting together a bid to have it designated as an Asset of Community Value which should mean that it is more difficult to knock it down or close it permanently. For this to work I need the support of the Parish Council which I am hopeful of obtaining. The rules require that the application must come from a recognized organization rather than an individual so I cannot submit it myself, but the Parish Council can do it on behalf of the residents of Wootton Bridge. There are a few upgrades at the Parish Council offices. Many will have noticed the new flagpole flying the Isle of Wight flag. The intention is that the pole will also double as the village Christmas tree. It will save a tree per year and should also save the Parish Council money. There are also some signage improvements planned that should make the office easier to find. Now that the Post Office is up and running focus is shifting to recreation ground improvements which I wholeheartedly support.

‘The Beast’ Last month’s front cover of the tractor received lots of compliments and my inside story about my love of tractors caught the attention of one local resident, Geoff Horsnell, who contacted me to tell me about his ‘pride and joy’ and invited me over to meet the old girl! Geoff is the proud owner of a Fordson Super Major and brought her in 2017 from a farm in Steeple Ashton, where she had sat for many years unused but thankfully covered over. She is still in her natural colours, as she would have been when she came off the factory line (Empire Blue for everything but the wheels which are Fordson Orange), obviously she has one or two marks on her but what 60-year-old hasn’t? Her engine purrs and she is in great shape. Geoff does the odd favour for his neighbour by topping one of her fields ensuring she keeps in good working order. This tractor is affectionately called ‘The Beast’ and this name came about after her recent cameo role in a drama that was filmed on the Island. She was spotted by a location scout who happened to see her sitting on the driveway and after photos were sent to the Director, she was offered a scene in the drama ‘The Beast Must Die’. On the day of filming, her scene took place on the road leading down from The Needles New Battery and involved her having a very near miss with an Aston Martin being driven by the leading lady. Meeting ‘The Beast’ really made my day and having a ride on her made my year!

Being silly by Maggie Currie As children we have an instinctual grasp of humour and appreciate all that is silly as a matter of course. Even the smallest absurdities provoke joyous gales of giggles or laughter. As we get older, this innate ability to see the value of silliness can diminish. Work takes precedence over play, and we seem to have less incentive to exercise our imaginative minds by focusing on what is funny. When we remember childhood, we may recall the pleasures of dressing up in funny costumes, reciting nonsense poems, making up strange games, or playing pretend. This unabashed silliness nourished our vitality and creativity. We can take in this nourishment once again by giving ourselves permission to lighten up and be silly. Too often we believe it serves no purpose to encourage our inherent silliness that is an inborn aspect of self. We may believe it is at odds with the grown-up culture of maturity. We play yet we don’t lose ourselves in play, and our imaginations are never truly given free reign because we regard the products of irrational creativity as being valueless. Yet silliness itself constitutes a vital part of human existence on many levels. Our first taste of ethereal bliss is often a consequence of our willingness to dabble in what we deem outrageous, nonsensical, or absurd. We delight in ridiculousness not only because laughter is intrinsically pleasurable, but also because it serves as a reminder that existence itself is fun. Skipping, doodling, and singing funny songs are no less entertaining than they were when we were children. We need not lose all interest in these cheerful and amusing activities, but to make them a part of our lives we must be ready to sacrifice a little dignity and a lot of fear. Silliness should be regarded as a priority because so much of life is inescapably serious. Through the magic of imagination, you can be or become anything–a photographer, a professional athlete, a dancer, a pilot. Whether you take hundreds of silly pictures, revel in the adulation of your fans as you make the winning catch, boogie down rock-star style in front of your bedroom mirror, or turn your desk into a cockpit, the ensuing hilarity will help you see that light-hearted fun and adulthood are not at all incompatible. If this has resonated with you in any way, please get in touch. I offer coaching and mentoring to you – for you to make the changes you want to in your life. Build your confidence in your abilities. To help you to have more fun, more freedom and less stress. That is it. There is no catch. I believe in you. Get in touch today to book your coaching sessions.
