Welcome to the September issue and thank you for picking up a copy. The school summer holidays are drawing to a close but lets hope it doesn’t mean that summer is over... I feel positive that we may have an ‘indian summer’ and let’s hope the warm days continue through to the end of September or even October. This months issue is packed with news and information and a big ‘shout out’ to all budding authors to check out the competition advertised on the back cover. Saturday the 23rd September is “Isle of Wight Day”. It’s a time when the whole community is encouraged to celebrate everything that is good about the Island. There are events happening in towns, communities and villages and you will find a full list of events at www.isleofwightday. com and on pages 10 and 11 you will find the ‘Dates for your Diary’, which gives information on events happening throughout the whole month. I hope you all have a wonderful September and I look forward to catching up with you again next month.

Happy Birthday to The Liquidator Since opening their doors 2 years ago, The Liquidator has grown in size, is holding more stock than ever and has just taken over a large contract which will see a great range of furniture, tools and DIY items coming to their Newport premises very shortly. The Liquidator works alongside ex-catalogue stores and takes delivery of their stock to be sold at competitive prices. Redundant stock, deleted lines and goods with damaged packaging can be found in their showroom. All the items are new and range from pictures, mirrors, sofas, seating, furniture to shelving and laundry baskets. They have recently taken a delivery of sofas from Homebase and Argos and have a great range of items from Laura Ashley. All their stock are limited pieces and the stock turns around quickly and the best advice owner Tony can give is “if you see it and want it make sure you buy it there and then, because the next time you come in it will probably be gone” Based at 16 Pyle Street, Newport, PO30 1JW, they are open Monday to Saturday from 9am – 5pm. They now accept all credit cards including American Express and also offer an Island wide delivery service. 1 person delivery is £10 and 2 person delivery is £20 anywhere on the Island. They also do stock clearance for retail businesses that are closing down and Tony is happy to come and discuss your requirements. Keep up to date with their new stock deliveries by following them on Facebook.

News Reports from Ryde Town Councillor Karen Lucioni Email: karen.rydesouth@mail.com | Mobile 07506930109 www.facebook.com/yourvoicecountsryde Ryde South Surgery - At the end of the year I will be holding a surgery every month for residents to have a place to come and meet with me personally, this will be at Aspire (coffee and tea on me) and I will make sure you all have pre-warning of these dates. Ryde Allotments - During the last few weeks I have visited all the allotments sites in Ryde, and have seen the results of some truly committed allotment holders. I am a member of the Ryde Town Council Allotment Committee, and recognising their efforts (and talent) would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their time and dedication. I have identified and highlighted a few concerns which will need to be rectified, an example being the drains at the bottom of Well Street, which overflow and cause a major flooding issue on the Quarry Road site. I am meeting the local district steward for Island Roads on site to explore the situation and bring forward possible solutions. I will update you on this. Ryde in Bloom - I was very honoured to be elected Chair of Ryde in Bloom for the coming year. The committee, comprising of Nancy, Keith, Lyn and yours truly, have been extremely fortunate to be welcomed by Ryde residents and community groups. We count ourselves as extremely lucky to be afforded the chance to listen to what inspires them to do what they do. I am really looking forward to meeting those community heroes, who make our town look so colourful at the awards ceremony in October. I have met some inspirational people and really hope to “grow Ryde in Bloom the next year. If you would like to get involved, or know someone you think should be put forward, then let me know.

(PACT) - I am also honoured to be elected secretary for the Ryde PACT group, this comprises of shop watch, pub watch, local councillors and other community groups. The group works on priorities for Ryde for example; road safety, anti-social behaviour and community issues. Our next meeting is 27th September and if you have any concerns please do not hesitate to contact me State of the Island Debate - The first state of the Island debate will be held at the Riverside Centre in Newport on the 6th September starting at 7pm until 9pm. The event will give an opportunity for your voice to be heard on Island issues and bring forward suggested solutions which could assist in bringing positive change. I look forward to meeting you at the event, where we can discuss issues which are close to our hearts and endeavour to work together on possible solutions. If you need to contact me please do not hesitate.

News Report for Wootton Bridge Town and County Councillor Barry Abraham Email:- barry.abraham@iow.gov.uk hopefully it will shortly be known how Island What a difference a month makes, the last Roads are going to upgrade this part of New time I wrote it was so hot and now in peak Road. holiday season, it is wet and cold and the evenings are getting noticeably darker earlier. The future of the Plane tree on the Bridge remains in the balance, further investigations My ‘Moan of the Month’ is the amount are ongoing over its future. As it is so close of rubbish that is being thrown out of car to the road clearly no chances can be taken windows and discarded by people parking up, eating their pre-packed sandwiches, can with public safety. of drink or takeaways and then lobbing the On the isle of Wight Council I am cabinet empty packages out of their car windows member for Planning and Housing and and driving off! I am constantly picking up the council is now starting the process of empty packages, used nappies, cans, plastic reviewing the Island local plan, this will set bottles etc. Why do people think that it is acceptable to litter the country side and then out how the Island will plan its future in terms of housing and regeneration and it leave it to somebody else to pick it all up! is important that the public participates in You brought it with you, you take it home this process as it will affect all of our lives. with you and put it into your bin! The Pennyfeathers developers have been told to have their section 106 Agreement On the planning front in Wootton the back to the council within seven days from applications to build on land at the former the last planning committee, (this is a legal cattery off Palmers/Church Road and on agreement between the council and the Lushington Hill are still to be determined, developer laying out the commitments and both lay outside the recognised building obligations the developer has before he line. I am meeting with the planning officer moves onto the site) or it will be brought dealing with the applications in the next back to the committee to see what action it week and will have a clearer idea how they may wish to take. will be dealt with. Along with two parish councillors and Liz, the Wootton Bridge parish clerk, I had a village walk with Island Roads. New Road is of concern because of its bad state, it is due to be resurfaced in the next few months in sections. What is proposed is to do the drainage first then the pavements. This is going to be crucial on the lower side of the road so as not to cause flooding to households, and lastly resurfacing. The section with the 10mph is more problematic, tests have been taken to establish the structure of the sub soil and 8

On housing I would like to see how the council can start to address the shortage of social and low cost housing, so many young people are being left behind and this does need to be sorted out. Most planning applications coming forward do not address this issue and the large housing associations do not seem to be helping the situation. And to finish, last month I mentioned swallows had taken up summer residence, I can happily report that the eggs have hatched and parents are now busily feeding their offspring.

News Report from - Cllr Wayne Whittle, Hunters Way, Binstead Hill, Ryde. Email wayne.whittle@iow.gov.uk Tel 07792 670771 Twitter @RydeAbide As you should all know by now the long awaited double yellow lines have been painted on the East side of East Hill Road. It took a few years but they appeared overnight running the whole length from top to bottom and will make East Hill Road much safer during school drop off and pick up times once the Autumn term starts. I attended the local parking meeting at Aspire Ryde and heard residents views and needs strongly expressed regarding permit parking and time limited waiting zones within Ryde North East. We do suffer locally from commuter parking and dumped vehicles due to the lack of zone parking orders on our streets and I was not surprised to see a well attended meeting support the introduction of zones. Heath from Aspire, and his group will now organise a further wide-ranging resident survey to gather the data necessary to make this requirement for a whole zoned area an official locally endorsed request. I have discussed this issue with the Cabinet Member who is currently working on a tailored policy to address the problem. Once our survey is completed and if it’s returned in favour, I will pursue the implementation of a resident Permit and limited time waiting zone. The RydeSlide was a great success this year and raised £5,000 to be divide equally between Inshore Rescue, Aspire Ryde, Wight Ice Leisure Ltd, Waterside Trust and the Fire Service charities. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our charities for all 14

their hard work assisting the event on the day along with our sponsors HSS, Wightlink, The Needles, Isle of Wight Radio, Island Echo, Solent Co and Isle of Wight College as without their time, energy and financial support there would be no RydeSlide. We are now investigating possible dates for next year as we are trying not to clash with the Rhythm Tree Festival. We had a problem on the Harbour Beach at the end of July when the Monkton Brook storm water exited the culvert towards the West instead of the usual North that takes it straight out to sea. This happened because the sand on its North face had become so high it had blocked the exit completely and the water had made its own path out the side towards the West, this was thankfully corrected and levelled off by the Council and Environment Agency. It’s just as well the Environment Agency are diverting the outfall pipe into the Harbour at the end of the season as the increasing sand will only get worse with time, they have recently submitted their application to planning. The Environment Agency are still visiting and communicating with local residents who have boundaries that border with Simeon Street Recreation Ground to agree the siting of the new flood wall. They have asked me to include this information in my report as a way of bringing the coming engineering works to everyone’s notice just in case they have been missed and may also want a visit to discuss their boundary, please contact me on wayne. whittle@iow.gov.uk if you want to talk to the Environment Agency.
