Welcome and thank you for picking up the latest issue of Island Magazines. We have had some glorious sunshine and quite a heatwave so far this summer but at the time of writing this it’s raining... and although I’m not keen on rain it was very much needed, but let’s hope the sun will be back shortly.

The summer holidays seem to have flown by and the Island has been packed with visitors enjoying all the wonderful delights our rock has to offer. It never ceases to amaze me when I come across visitors who seem in awe of the fact that we live here and have everything the Island has to offer right under our noses. It’s comments like this that make me glad to call this home.

News Report from - Cllr Wayne Whittle. Tel 07792 670771 Twitter @RydeAbide E wayne.whittle@iow.gov.uk Ryde has been blessed with good weather for the School holidays, along with the many events that took place. It was wonderful to see the smiling faces of visitors and residents along the seafront day and night for many days. It’s good to see the whole of Ryde Beach open to the public again and firing on all cylinders. The lifeguards have been busy and have provided a great comprehensive service to beach goers and the beach, doing top up litter picks, beach levelling, shoreline patrols, first aid etc. The same can be said for Inshore Rescue who have been out many times this season. They also did a great job tending the tank at #RydeSlide and a big thanks also goes out to Ryde fire service, Aspire Ryde, Waterside Pool, Ryde Arena Group, Cllr Lilley and Cllr Lucioni for their help at the event. It was a long hot day and everyone had great fun sliding down Union Street once again at this well supported community event that would not happen without the time and efforts from HSS, Solent, Island Roads, IW Council along with our sponsors Wightlink, IW Distillery, Goddards, Rosemary’s Vineyard, 4
the Garlic Farm, Dell Cafe and Olivos to name but a few. I’m hoping that we can match last year’s funds raised to be divided between our 5 local Groups and charities along with funds going to Pride from their own extra hour. The Environment Agency will return to the Harbour beach at the end of the Season to remove the redundant culvert and outfall pipe, making final connections and modifications to the Harbour and beach to complete the job. It will be a great relief to our local businesses and affected residents once it’s done. Let’s hope the fair weather continues through into September and we get great weather for Ryde Carnival.

News Report from Wootton Bridge Councillor Barry Abraham 07800736557 | Email:- barry.abraham@iow.gov.uk The glorious summer weather has just broken as I put pen to paper. Cowes Week started with little wind for the yachts and baking hot sun and finished with a wet and windy fireworks night. When I used to go to the event, it always seemed to rain, especially walking the mile or so back to the car parked outside of a friend’s house in East Cowes. Those were the days when the Floating Bridge never broke down! Sadly a swan was found dead in Pump Lane by the dinghy park, by a parish councillor. The swan was entangled in fishing line with hooks still attached. Despite all the pleas people still leave their discarded junk behind in the misguided belief that it is someone else’s problem to clear up and unfortunately a swan has paid the price. The parish council will pay to put up a sign asking people to be more careful with their tackle in the future. I attended a meeting with the parish council at Island Roads offices to hear how they intend to carry out the improvements to New Road. The work will start in September on the section from the High Street down to St. Edmunds Walk. This is a long awaited improvement and hopefully will take place after many past promises, my one concern is that it is done with adequate drainage to protect the houses on the east side of the road from potential flooding. With regard to the 10 mph section, no plan has been designed by Island Roads but the problems were talked through. Most problematic was maintaining access whilst carrying out the work which might be done at night. Island Roads also raised the idea of making the road one lane in parts to reduce speed and this would also help to make the 10
walkway the correct width and make it safe to walk on. As more information becomes available I will report it here but do let me have your views. The Planning Application at Palmers Farm has given me a lot of feedback from residents. I am meeting planning officers to discuss with them residents’ concerns which focus mainly on three areas. Highway access and traffic generation and the impact on other neighbouring roads, impact on the environment and the lack of capacity of public services in and around Wootton. The hot weather has been creating problems on the farm, the fields have been starting to resemble the Australian outback and the cows and their calves are now being fed winter baled silage which I would not usually start until October. The rain over the last few days has magically made the fields turn green and the animals are picking it off as soon as it grows. Speaking to my arable farming friends, they tell me that they have finished the harvest but yields are down and the consensus is that it is the earliest finish since 1976. There was recently an accident on the Bridge when a person was knocked over, whilst I do not know the circumstances, the volume of traffic does make it almost impossible to cross, even for the most sure footers of us. I regularly get asked about the possibility for a crossing on the bridge, I have asked the council to look at the problem and as have the parish council. Please do not forget if you have an issue with the council, please get in touch by any of the means above.
Barry Abraham.
