Welcome to the September issue of Island Magazines. I can’t believe we are here already as it only feels like a couple of weeks ago that summer started. We have some beautiful landscapes on the Island and there’s nothing better than a field of hay bales, wheat or sweetcorn. Just travel less than five minutes from any town centre and you will be in the midst of the countryside with fields of all varying colours and crops. No doubt like me you have noticed the tractors, trailers and balers out in force going backwards and forwards at all hours of the day while they frantically work to harvest the crops. I’ve always had a keen liking for tractors so I don’t mind coming across them on the roads. I always add extra time to my journey at this time of the year and rather than stress I can relax and enjoy the views over some of the most picturesque landscapes in the country. This month we are giving a BIG shout out on behalf of Feline Welfare and some of their residents who are looking for their forever homes. Read more about them on page 4. I hope you all have a great September and enjoy the last few weeks of summer...

Feline Welfare have lots of adorable guests staying with them and all these gorgeous cats are looking for love and a place to call home. They range from 12 weeks up to 13 years of age and they all deserve safe, genuine homes with people who REALLY care. Some have had a sad start to their lives so will need time, patience and understanding, but even those who are timid initially learn to trust you and will be WONDERFUL pets. Here are just a few of the really special ones that want you to pick up the phone and call so you can come and meet them. Call anytime on 521778 For more in-depth information about each cat you can visit their website www.felinewelfareiow.co.uk. If you are unable to adopt or foster but would still like to help please consider making a donation to them in order that they can keep doing the good work that they do. You will find all the info on the website. Sylvester has had a tough start to his little life, but he is surprisingly confident all things considered. He is used to being with a large group of cats so would like to go to a home with one or two friendly felines. He will be timid initially but with love, patience and time he will become your friend for life. Vinnie is a mainly white boy and is 13 years young. He is a loving boy and needs a caring home in a safe area. He has always been a single pet and would like to keep it this way as he wants his own personal 'human slave’. He is very affectionate and just LOVES human company. He recently had surgery to remove part of his ear flap. He has recovered well and is raring to go !!!! Rupert (tabby/white) is 6 years old and he is very affectionate. He does get on with other cats but he may well take over his humans lock, stock and barrel, so more than one lap is essential!!! Rupert is such a contented boy and wants a home to call his own. Meet Lloyd (black/white) and Harry (white/black). These gorgeous boys are 2 years old and they are looking for a loving home where they can stay together. They are neutered and vaccinated and really are ready to start their new life in a safe and loving home. They are REALLY affectionate boys and will make gorgeous pets for their new ‘parents’ or should we say ‘human slaves’ !!!! 4
Garfield is looking for a loving, safe new home with someone who really cares. He is 9 years young and he needs a home as an only pet. He has recently had a tough time but he is still happy and content with life and has plenty of love to give.

News Report from Cllr Wayne Whittle. Tel 07792 670771 Twitter @RydeAbide E wayne.whittle@iow.gov.uk After raising residents concerns with Island Roads resurfacing works for Monkton Street have been put back to September in order to avoid obstructing Ryde Carnival. The Environment Agency are providing a personalised flood works completion letter for local residents that can be used to update insurance companies on the new lower risk locally. If you would like one please contact me providing your name and property address and I can get the EA to email you one. This is needed as most insurance companies work from historic flood maps. The flood group have been promised a similar letter from Southern water related to their huge surface water tank that has worked well since installation. Problems with pumps have continued to disrupt the new big soaker tilt bucket from working in the splash park, the bubbling pond and water shower are working fine but disappointing that the old pumps have come to the end of their life and had to be replaced. Unlucky that the new replacement also failed to work... when it rains it pours. Hopefully a solution will be achieved before the end of August. Don’t forget to come out and enjoy the Classic Car Extravaganza on Ryde Seafront from 11am on Sunday 15th September, hope we get a fine sunny day for it. 6
The local parking zone survey has been taking place to decide what parts of the Ward meet the criteria for resident parking and limited time waiting. Parking officers will present their findings and suggestions to the Ryde North East Action Group at the Simeon Arms at 5pm on Tuesday 10 September

News Report from Councillor Charles Chapman for Ryde South Email:- Charles.Chapman@iow.gov.uk | Mobile number 07970 009608 Tourism is an important source of revenue to this Island, something which is often swept under the carpet or totally ignored. Being tourist savvy is even more important now with onset of Brexit. We need to attract visitors; both local and international. Our council needs to invest more in tourism; it provides jobs, revenue and futures for our young people. Recently on my mainland visit I was looking at ‘attractions’ in other council areas, it dawned on me that although we have some great attractions locally, we need to look at how other successful organisations promote their areas. Sophisticated water and theme parks attract both young and old. Theatres and outdoor park areas with dedicated picnic and entertainment places are, in many areas of the country, flourishing. We need to ‘pull together’ the many brilliant attractions that we have and consolidate them with major central investment which will attract people from the mainland and even further afield. Part of this task is to tackle ferry prices. Our ferries are a public service and should not be subject to the huge daily fluctuations in prices. My post bag, especially at this time of year, is full of grievances about the cost of the ferries. Something which is raised on an annual basis then seems to get forgotten. Now is the time for both tourists and islanders to make their voices heard at Westminster. 8
Our fire service has been combined with Hampshire, we now need to protect our hospital service to ensure that it doesn’t become a local triage, servicing mainland hospitals. This can only be done if we, islanders, make our voices heard and ensure that part of the 48million for the South East are spent in improving our hospital service and not in depleting it. As many of you are aware, I walk my Ward regularly and was out with Island Roads and can assure locals that Great Preston Road repairs are now underway. The Ward drain survey is also underway and I am pleased to announce a second weed spray for September. Again let me or Island Roads know of any areas which are of concern to you. The paddling pool on Ryde Sea Front is now fully open and when I visited there recently was very busy. Again my thanks to Town and Parish Council for the brilliant flower display. I believe our gardens could win at Chelsea. My thanks to my Ward for all their support and I wish you all a very pleasant summer.

A Reliable Garden Maintenance Service by Chris Morris-Perry
My name is Chris and I am the owner of Ryde Reg Garden Maintenance Services and I have been tending gardens for the last 6 months on the Island and before that in London. I studied for my RHS and City Guilds qualifications while working in Whitehall which was no mean feat! I have a love of gardening from working with my Grandfather who was a good friend of Percy Thrower, who those of a certain age will remember! I am experienced in all aspects of horticulture; lawn maintenance, hedging, weeding, pruning and planting out and topiary (I don’t do hard landscaping, fencing etc.). I may not be the quickest gardener, but what I may lack in speed I make up for in knowledge, quality and thoroughness. I am not a slash and burn merchant and always turn up when I am supposed to! No job is too small. Feel free to call me on 07747615567 for a friendly chat about how I can help you.

News Report from Wootton Bridge Councillor Barry Abraham 07800736557 | Email:- barry.abraham@iow.gov.uk As I write my September report, Cowes Week is underway and the weather is thoroughly miserable. The wind is doing its best to blow the runner beans across the garden and Mrs Abraham has cheerfully told me that she will not need to water the garden plants , as with this wind there will be few plants left to water! The Red Road junction on to the High Street is to be patched up by Island Roads to make it safe for pedestrians to cross without falling into a pothole. I would like to say it is being resurfaced but because it is a private road this was sadly not possible. The footpath that runs from Red Road to Church Road has had some clearance work by Island Roads. I am sure that more work needs to be done to stabilise the ditch. I am working with council staff to make sure this work is done before the autumn. The Planning Application at Palmers Farm is still in the process of being determined. I regularly receive up-dates from the case officer. I have read the Highways representation which is quite extensive and at present recommends refusal of the application. The Highways report is available via the planning application on the council web site – www.iow.gov.uk TCP/29905/F, P/00741/18 . St. Edmunds Walk is due to be resurfaced at the end of August and letters are being sent to residents and I am waiting to hear when Mill Square resurfacing will be rescheduled. Lushington Hill’s pavement upgrading is well underway.
to attend the meeting but have asked Island Roads for a briefing. I have raised the condition of Rectory Drive and Footways, these are concrete roads and there has been problems trying to resurface concrete in the past, but I am told there is a new material that makes tarmac adhere to concrete. When I have more information I will let you know. I have recently attended meetings regarding the release of White Tailed Sea Eagles on the Island, there is absolutely no doubting that these are spectacular birds and are a top predator. I have to say that I am concerned with so called re wilding, when sea eagles became extinct in the UK and apparently the last one to disappear may have been on the Island but the Island and the south coast is a very different environment from the one they inhabited previously. But despite concerns raised by those in attendance the releases have gone ahead. I hope that my concerns are unfounded. Work to create the coastal path around the Island is ongoing and at present negotiations are taking place with the owners of Norris Castle and English Heritage, custodians of the Osborne Estate to overcome their concerns. It is hoped once these have been resolved it will be possible to cross into Wootton without needing to use Brocks Copse Road. As a keen watcher of the environment I was talking to a friend about the lack of rabbits around these days, on the farm when they used to be in abundance, when one appeared in the garden and proceeded to dig a large hole in the lawn!
I had hoped to be able to give an update on the proposed work on the second phase of Please do not forget if you have an issue with work on New Road, unfortunately I was unable the council, please get in touch with me.
