elcome to the September issue of Island Magazines and as you know I always like to give a little mention about the weather...

In this last month alone, we have had a heat wave that at times was unbearable and we’ve also had monsoon season with serious flooding across the Island. To say it’s been unpredictable is an understatement. Let’s see what September brings us! It seems that almost everyday somebody is being scammed and we have teamed up with IWASP (Isle of Wight Against Scams Partnership) to bring you the latest scams that are doing the ‘rounds’. There are some unscrupulous criminals trying every possible way to get people to part with their money. On page 6 you can find some of the latest scams reported to Trading Standards. In this issue you will find the regular news reports for your area and our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 10 and 11 will keep you informed of local and community events happening across the Island. If you have an event coming up, please feel free to send us the details via any of the means below. We have some great advertisers and as always please support them as it’s been a rough 18 months for many local businesses. I hope you have a great September and I look forward to catching up with you again next month

News Report for Wootton Bridge from Cllr Daryll Pitcher Tel: 07511 045 145 | daryll@planetmail.net Good news. At the point of me submitting this article to print the Post Office is due to open in just a few days, Wednesday the 18th of August at 9.30am to be exact. It will now be operating every Wednesday 9.30am to 12.30pm. I would like to thank both Wootton Bridge Parish Council and Community Action Isle of Wight for all the hard effort put in to make this happen. I am still committed to securing full time provision in Wootton Bridge but for now we have a Post Office available for residents that allows you to do most of what you need, pay bills, send parcels, buy stamps and so on. Wootton Bridge has been relatively lucky during the recent heavy rains however we have still suffered some damage. Due to the widespread and unexpected nature of the events the authorities are hard pressed to react immediately when issues arise. Locally the worst damage was to the newly installed pipework in the gully next to the footpath that runs from Red Road upwards between St Edmund’s Walk and Bridgeway/Rectory Drive. The pipe has been lifted and much of the gravel washed away. I am hopeful that this will be fixed shortly. I think this may have been caused either by an underestima-tion of the potential water flow or because the pipe was only recently laid and hadn’t had a chance to settle and bed in properly. I have recently been working on the issue of the New Road repairs. This is a longstanding issue, and I am not expecting anything to happen this year, but I am pushing for inclusion on the programme of works for next year. This is not a simple resurfacing job, the road requires 4

significant work and will take some time to complete. Maintaining access for residents of Woodside is a serious issue that needs careful thought and planning. I have been saddened by the news of the sudden and unexpected closure of the Church Close Club. Many community groups used this high-quality venue, and I am working to try and protect it for future use followed by a quick re-opening. It is owned by the housing association Places for People who also own the estate that it is part of. It was well used and was run by residents. Community spaces are im-portant for the good of the village so it would be a real shame if we were to lose it completely which is why I am doing my best to save it. A public meeting has been called to allow Wight Building Materials to explain details about their pro-posed plans for gravel extraction from land at Palmer’s Farm. The provisional date of Tuesday 28th Sep-tember at the Old School on New Road has been proposed. This is a very important event and the con-tent presented will no doubt prove controversial. Whether you are opposed, in support or sitting on the fence of such an idea this meeting will be the first chance the community of Wootton Bridge will get to see details. The meeting is being organized by Wootton Bridge Parish Council at my request fol-lowing an offer from the management team at Wight Building Materials to show their plans publicly before official submission.

Trading Standards have some more scams for you to be ake in heavy type that will stand out aware of. Residents ROSEVIEW PICTURE FRAMING have reported scams from the following –

Roseview Picture Framing OFFER A UNIQUE AND TRULY PERSONAL SERVICE

• A call from someone claiming to be from TV insurance, stating that their See our website for further insurance had expired and it needed to be Tel : 01983 404885 information renewed. They claimed the resident owed £180 but they didn’t have any insurance and REMEMBER WE COME TO YOU had recently changed their television. The www.roseviewpictureframing.co.uk caller then insisted that they needed to pay E: info@roseviewpictureframing.co.uk and they couldn’t pay in instalments, they went as far as to demand they use a credit Tel: 01983 404885 card, go overdrawn or borrow money from a friend. Luckily the resident reported this to a trusted contact who confirmed that this was definitely a SCAM. • We have received reports of callers ringing residents to say that they want to check their meters, implying they are from SSE. On checking the number online there are large numbers of “An excellent team complaints about it. If offering an in doubt check with SSE invaluable service” to confirm if the call is genuine NEW! Book online www.mobilevetsurgery.co.uk • Action Fraud Stress-free Islandwide “Friendly & reliable has received over 700 professional yet Home Visits & reports from members very caring” Central Vet Surgery of the public about fake emails purporting to be from the NHS. The emails claim to be able to provide people with Keyhole CT a “digital passport” Surgery Scans that “proves you have been vaccinated against 01983 212999 Watergate Rd, Newport, PO30 1XP COVID-19”. These emails are fake, and the links within them lead to genuine-looking websites that steal your personal and financial information. Remember, the vaccine is free of charge. At no point will you be asked to pay. • Emails have been received purporting to be from the HMRC stating ‘ if you do not reply to this email with the details required, you will not be eligible for any refunds from HMRC’ – this is a SCAM and legitimate organisations will never contact you in this way.

Tractors…. For the past couple of years, the front cover of the September issue has been reserved for anything tractor themed! Two reasons for this… since a very young age I have always had a love of tractors and secondly when you live on an island, during harvesting season, you are never far from a tractor, ploughed field, farmland or dare I mention it stuck behind one in traffic. I have recently moved from my central rural location at Arreton and must admit I miss seeing the tractors, trailers and all manner of agricultural machinery passing my window.

Thankfully, I have been able to satisfy my fix of tractors by tuning into the much talked after TV show, Clarkson’s Farm. When this was first brought to my attention I ummed and ahhed about watching it as I was no Jeremy Clarkson fan… However, I can be the first to admit I was wrong, and this is probably the best show I have seen in a long, long time. I take my hat off to farmers across the nation as I have learnt so much about farming, more than I could ever have imagined, much of this is thanks to Clarkson’s side kick, experienced young farmer Kaleb Cooper who also brought the show to life. I won’t ruin it by telling you anything more. It is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video and I rate it ‘ten thumbs up’. News Report from Michael Lilley for Ryde Appley and Elmfield 07769 551 578 | Michael.lilley@iow.gov.uk | www.michaellilley.uk I hope you are all well and hopefully Autumn will be better weatherwise - less rain and more sun. Although we are out of lockdown and restrictions are over at present, Covid19 is still prevalent, and you need to take care. There is to be a programme of vaccination boosters along with flu-jabs and please can all 60-year-olds make sure you are fully vaccinated for the Winter. Our health is the most important thing. IW Day and Thank You Day – Saturday 11th September 2021 – Near Hovertravel on Esplanade - Ryde Town Council are hosting a big thank you day as part of the Classic Car Extravaganza event for all Ryde residents and organisations that supported their fellow residents/neighbours and the most vulnerable during Covid19 and the past 18 months. There were over 600 active volunteers in the Town, care workers, shopworkers, those in the NHS and so many who went the extra mile in supporting our community. Local people have nominated many and on this day I as Mayor will personally thank them. They range in age from 90 to 7 years old. They are real heroes and heroines. One of the Awards will be for Hovertravel staff who kept this lifeline service going throughout 2020-21 and made sure so many got to hospital in Portsmouth safely and returned. A big thank you to you all. 90th Anniversary – 13th September Celebrations of Schneider Trophy - On the 13th September 1931, Ryde Pier was the start and finish of the World’s sea-plane race where the British Team won with their Supermarine plane recording the world record speed at the time. The Supermarine,

designed by R J Mitchell was the prototype for the Spitfire and the rest is history. There is a reenactment of this famous race and there will be a historic fly-past Ryde and back of flying boats. My Dad was at Ryde Pier in 1931, aged 12 and he went onto work with Mitchell before the war and Barnes Wallace. He worked on the Walrus Flying Boat made at Saunders Roe in East Cowes in 1940/41. Deckchairs are back on Ryde beaches! Yes, deckchairs and other beach equipment are back after many years for hire on Ryde beaches. There is a hire cabin on the Harbour. This project has also created jobs. Lifeguards and Waterside Trust - Again, this year, Waterside Trust has provided a fantastic team of Lifeguards on the beach and trained youngsters in lifeguard skills, so we have future safeguards. Sinkhole at Appley and Flooding - I have been campaigning and lobbying Southern Water about the disastrous sinkhole which has spoiled Appley and Ryde beaches this year. Southern Water are telling me the work will be completed at the end of October, but I am not convinced but will report in the October Issue. I am trying to get compensation for the Town. Many residents suffered flooding and I am asking Southern Waters to fit No Return Valves to Ryde homes most at risk of flooding. Save Westridge Farm Campaign - Sadly, the West Acre Park planning application for 465 homes was approved by IW Planning Committee, this is being appealed by myself and others and I keep residents posted of developments in the Autumn.

News Report from Cllr Phil Jordan - Ryde North West. Tel: 07929 376375 | Email: phil.jordan@iow.gov.uk Some good news for Ryde and those that access the pier to join up with the fast passenger services to Portsmouth. Wightlink have decided to remove charges for travelling up the pier and will, in turn, remove barriers for entry and exit. They tell me they have looked at all possible options that might provide a satisfactory and sustainable solution - including Number Plate Recognition systems – but have finally decided that to improve access from the road and assist an uninterrupted flow up the pier the most favourable way is to cease charging and remove barriers used for that purpose. Instead, a 50p charge per customer travelling on the Fast Cat will be incorporated into the fare price for a single journey to offset the current income from the charges to use the pier. The outcome of this should be a reduction in any tailbacks of vehicles queuing for the pier entrance and prevent congestion in the general seafront area. At the same time, the old tramway running up the centre of the pier is being covered over with boarding to provide a pedestrian and cycle away all the way up to the end of the pier which will at last separate those walking the pier length from the vehicles that travel back down creating a much safer environment for all. I’m informed that the cycle way and pedestrian walkway will allow travel through the station area and up onto the pier without interruption and in an improved way to the current layout. Work on this part of the pier is due to start early next year and should be finished by March 2023. 12

Work continues on the inspection of the pier for the purpose of allowing the new trains to be able to progress up to the pier end and any works that might be required to enable and strengthen the support for the trains will be undertaken with some haste. It’s important that the rail link is restored urgently and for the new trains to get running and provide that important travel link from Shanklin and all the stops in between to the mainland. I understand the current target date, depending on the inspection outcomes, is due for the autumn and fingers crossed that happens. Further along the seafront, Ryde Town Council are still in bi-weekly talks with the Isle of Wight Council regarding the transfer of the harbour and an agreed date for March 2022 has been set for the final completion of the harbour and Eastern Gardens to RTC. The harbour remains problematic with sand build up and there are complexities with licences that are required to enable sand removal but there is a plan of action and the Town Council do intend to invest in the harbour to improve facilities and services once the freehold is transferred next year. Works at Appley continue on behalf of Southern Water and we are being told that works may be completed by October. The loss of the car park has had a big impact on parking in Ryde and the actual visible above ground pipework has not been helpful at all for our beach offer to visitors though I am aware the company have engaged with organisations affected by the works and assisted in some recompense continued over the page

News Report from Cllr Phil Jordan - Ryde North West. where necessary. With the Classic Car show arriving for the weekend of the 10th, 11th, and 12th of September where a huge crowd of visitors and exhibitors are expected I do hope that the works are not an inconvenience to all concerned. Finally, as summer fades and we head into autumn in the coming months, it’s good to know that the re-introduction of the deck chairs on our beach has been a great success. Demand has been high, and I know many people have taken advantage of the three giant deckchairs placed along the front to take pictures and snaps of their visit to our town and our Island. We have created jobs for a number of young people under the Kickstarter scheme we run through Ryde Town Council, and we are planning to increase our offer for next season in 2022. I am determined to re-introduce the much loved ‘Dotto train’ back into Ryde and looking at possible ways of doing that to be ready for next year. It might have to be an electric vehicle for now and the future, but I have seen many examples of these vehicles which are worth considering. Maybe we can join up the top of the town with the seafront as well. Now that would be a real winning formula for Ryde. Cllr Phil Jordan
