Welcome to the April issue of Island Magazines and thank you for picking up a copy. The year is slowly moving ahead and at the time of writing this we are following a Government roadmap which will gradually bring us out of ‘lockdown’ and let’s hope in the months to come we can start seeing a return to normal life pre-covid. Easter is early this year with Good Friday on the second of April and Easter Sunday on the fourth. I hope we are lucky weather wise and have the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors accompanied with a good dose of sunshine. It might even be a chance for either the first picnic or barbecue of the year. This is also a great time to relax and get stuck into our puzzle section on page 18.

Report from Sandown Town & County Councillor Debbie Andre. Tel 07948 757977 Email:- debbieandre4sandown@gmail.com Facebook:- debbieandre4sandown As previously reported, The IOW Council enforcement team had held back on serving a S215 on the owner of Tarvic2 following the fire. I’m disappointed that the building has been left for so long in such a dilapidated state. Enough is enough! Following my request, a case has now been opened by the enforcement team and the enforcement process has started. It’s high time that this site was sorted out. Likewise, with the Savoy site and the Grand Hotel, I have raised these issues once again with the enforcement team. It has been suggested that the former Savoy site may become a car park. Parking remains an issue. If off road parking is limited in your street, it may qualify to be surveyed to see if a Residents Parking Zone could be implemented, but I would stress that this would be subject to over 50% of residents voting in favour. Only 26% of residents in Cross Street were in favour, after a very thorough assessment by the Residents’ Parking Scheme Officer, but I appreciate that there were concerns over having to pay a charge when a parking space wouldn’t be guaranteed. As some residents of the Yaverland Estate will already be aware, I arranged an inspection, which I attended, with both a manager from Island Roads and a representative from the IOW Council Highways contract management team. I’m grateful to residents who came out to give their views at the time of the inspection which was very constructive. I have now had confirmation that a design for a potential proposal to address the serious issues surrounding visitor parking and 4

road safety issues is fully supported by the IOW Council. Residents will have an opportunity to submit their views/ representations at the time of the formal consultation, date yet to be announced. I will continue to work with residents throughout my ward to address parking issues as I appreciate that this can be a cause of great stress. Although we seem to be “back to square one” on the Council’s plans for Dinosaur Isle, I see this as a positive, as there is great potential for the whole area to become an ecotourism destination as an Eden Project, maintaining and preserving Brown’s at its heart. There could be opportunities for community involvement right from the start and what a fantastic way to emerge from the pandemic crisis. We need to be ambitious for Sandown, respecting and protecting our heritage, whilst creating a new and dynamic environment. More details to follow. I have been contacted by residents who have recently received their Council Tax bills and are concerned about their ability to pay the increased charges. Help is available from a variety of sources. For those on the internet, look up IsleHelp and this will direct you to a variety of options, including Council Tax Support. The Footprint Trust will provide free help and advice on saving money on your energy and water bills. They can be contacted on 822282.

Report from Sandown Town & County Councillor Debbie Andre. These are worrying times. Please don’t suffer in silence. I’m available to help and support you along with Cllr Heather Humby. I can be contacted via the details above and Heather can be contacted on 402024 or at heatherhumby@ sandowntowncouncil.gov.uk Although, at the time of writing, face to face meetings aren’t possible, it won’t be long before we’ll all be together again.

MEET THE CANDIDATES Local elections are taking place on Thursday 6th May. Although Island Magazines has no political agenda, we thought it only fair to make space available to all candidates to advertise their campaigns (should they wish to). Not all candidates took up the offer but for those who did we have produced a handy section for you to pull out and keep.

If you are worried about leaving home to attend the polling station there is still time to apply for a postal vote. You have until 5pm on Tuesday 20th April to apply. Either call 01983 823380 or email electoral.services@iow.gov.uk or go online and download, print, and fill out a postal vote application form at www.iow.gov. uk/Council/OtherServices/ElectoralRegistration/Postal-Votes. Once you have completed the form and signed it, you need to send it to Electoral Services, County Hall, Newport, Isle of Wight, PO30 1UD.

Waste of Space Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust launch public appeal to help turn unloved spaces in our towns and cities into vital natural space for people and wildlife. Natural and wild places have provided a lifeline for people across the Isle of Wight and Hampshire over the past year, providing essential outside space to relax, exercise, play and spend time with friends and family. Access to these wild spaces and connection to nature is known to benefit people’s physical and mental health, leading to reductions in depression, anxiety and obesity and strengthening people’s immune systems. However, the pandemic has highlighted vast inequalities in access to green and natural spaces. One in eight households have no garden and rely entirely on public open spaces, particularly in urban areas. In a survey conducted by the Trust in June 2020, over 96% of people said that nature played an important role in relieving stress during lockdown and expressed a need for more natural space in our towns and cities. Urban wild spaces create healthier communities, reduce loneliness and social isolation and provide safe places for children to play. They also provide cleaner air, combat climate change, help reduce flooding and act as havens for wildlife as part of a county-wide Nature Recovery Network. The Trust is asking local people to map the ‘wasted space’ in their communities, the unloved scraps of land around our houses and streets that could, and should, do much more for people and nature. This could include tall buildings with the potential to have swift boxes on, paved over surfaces which could be filled with colourful planters or simply a space which needs a litter pick and a place to sit to transform it. The Trust want local people to help find creative ways to make space for nature within our towns and cities. Debbie Tann, CEO of Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, says: “Wildlife has been squeezed into smaller and smaller spaces just at the time when people need nature more than ever for their health and wellbeing. Our Wilder 2030 campaign is calling for 30% of land and sea to be restored for nature by 2030, and for people to join us in taking action for wildlife. This must be the decade of nature’s recovery and rewilding our lives. Any area, no matter how small, will contribute to a Nature Recovery Network, and help rewild where we live. This will help transform towns and cities into places where wildlife can thrive and people are happier and healthier.” “Our Wilder Communities Officers, will provide support and advice, including how to talk to your local council, ways to identify what wildlife might already be living in your community, and how to make a space that benefits people and wildlife. We’ll also be engaging with local councils and landowners to get their support so they can work together with communities to make changes which create better urban spaces for everyone.” Together we can rewild where we live. Monthly News Report for Shanklin. Richard 07471 471960 Jon 07973 860086 Email. priest.gilbey@live.co.uk Hopefully, more and more residents will have received their vaccine jabs by now, and plans are in hand for preparing shops, businesses and pubs to open within the guidance – subject to the progress that has been made in recent months continuing. All of this could not have been achieved without the work of volunteers that have helped out at the medical centre, as well as the residents that have continued to provide deliveries of shopping and medications to all those shielding – it has been an incredible community effort that we know has made a difference to those that have been helped. Thanks also to all involved with Shanklin Community Library’s home delivery service – it has been supported by a connecting communities grant, with Maria and the team enabling local residents to get books and jigsaws delivered to their homes on a regular basis. Volunteers have also maintained the 22 and 24 Bus services, reaching from Blythe Way to the Esplanade, as well as to Yaverland, Perowne Way, and Lake – all involved give up their time on a weekly basis, and there are plans to increase the number of journeys once the situation permits and to fit in with shops reopening. The new guidance has resulted in local outdoor sports, such as Football, planning a return early in April – volunteers have been working, within the guidance, to make clubhouses and grounds ready to resume the season (local fixtures should start on 14

the 3rd April and finish 29th May 2021, to avoid overlap with Cricket season). Shanklin Cricket Club have benefitted from voluntary efforts over the winter, and the clubhouse has been renovated and is ready for the new season – more details in future editions; and grounds work has started at the Bowling Club. Members of Shanklin Town Brass Band have been selected to take part in the Kapitol Cory Online Championships, and the Band’s efforts are available on the YouTube channel – we know they are preparing for the coming summer and we are all hopeful that they can resume playing in the near future. Shanklin Town Council have set a budget for 2021 onwards, with funds set aside for a major project on the toilets at Chine Bluff and follows the funding of Tower Cottage and Falcon Cross amenities, as well as investment in the Esplanade: hopefully, the project with include family friendly provision, as well as increased accessibility, whilst recognising the limitations of the location and respecting the heritage of the site. Hopefully, local churches, the Theatre, and voluntary groups such as Age Concern, will also be able to start planning to reopen (but may continue with the online activity that many have been able to offer their members), and work started on plans for the 2021 summer. Although delayed, work on the railway line is continuing, with the Bridges at continued over the page

Monthly News Report for Shanklin Skew/Lake and near Gatten & Lake school nearing completion and benefitting pedestrians for years to come. And readers are also reminded that, at present, the local elections are planned to take place on Thursday May 6th, 2021, with polling stations at Shanklin Youth Centre, Falcon Cross and the County Ground – again thanks to all the volunteers that have made this possible. Finally, we can only thank again all of those that work in care, maintain essential services, and those that have given up their time to help others since the pandemic began – this has been a really sad time for many people, and we hope there is light at the end of the tunnel soon.

Take care and stay safe, and please take the vaccine if offered one. Jon Gilbey & Richard Priest Promoted by Richard Priest of 2 Maida Vale Road, Shanklin, Isle of Wight, PO37 7DB

Report from IW Councillor Ian Ward for Sandown South & Cabinet Member for Infrastructure & Transport Email: ian.ward@iow.gov.uk Telephone: 01983 403193 Mobile: 07772559093 ISLAND LINE REFURBISHMENT DELAYED FOR SIX WEEKS Due to unforeseen problems the refurbishment of Island Line had been delayed for approximately six weeks so the service won’t restart until mid-May. There are rumours going around that it won’t be finished until September, while that may be accurate as work will continue after the new service re-starts. SANDOWN REGENERATION New Medical Hub In Sandown The IW Council has agreed to sell the old Civic Centre in the Heights to the NHS so it can be converted into an NHS Medical Hub to provide specific services and treatment. This is a really good investment for Sandown from which our residents in Sandown and the surrounding area will undoubtedly benefit. Beachfield Road Development Gets Underway By the time you read this the development scheme in Beachfield Road for 10 new houses should be underway. I have spoken to the developer and he is keen to get the housing development underway during March/April. This is another positive step forward in Sandown regeneration. FLY TIPPING & LITTER – SPECIAL EFFORT TO TACKLE THE PROBLEM The IW Council has set up a special task & finish group of councillors to see how we can deal with the ever-growing problem of Fly Tipping and Littering. Sandown suffers from both these issues, as does the whole Island, and I think there is little excuse. Apologists for this irresponsible littering blame the Tip or the rubbish collection system. We are extremely lucky that we have our Green Town Volunteers who dedicate much of their time to clearing litter etc; other areas are not so lucky.
