Your Local Community Magazine
Dear Readers Welcome to the August issue and thank you for picking up a copy. The school holidays are here, the Island is once again becoming a hot spot for holiday makers and personally I still don’t think its warm enough to go swimming in the sea yet!!!! The weather is hit and miss at the moment and that is all I am going to say about it! August on the Island really signifies Carnival time and its a great time to get out and about to other towns and join in the fun. You will find details of carnivals and other events happening in August on the ‘Dates for you Diary’ which are on pages 6 and 7. As usual you will find news and information in this issue along with some great advertisers who are always grateful for your business so please keep using them. I recently met with a family who experienced a life changing tragedy last year and are now helping other families and you can read all about it on page 14. I hope you enjoy this issue and look forward to catching up with you again next month. Debbie

Monthly News Report for Shanklin. Richard 07854 083229 Jon 07964 869338 Email. priest.gilbey@live.co.uk August, in Shanklin, promises to be a month to remember for visitors and residents alike – Shanklin Carnivals are on Wednesday 3rd and Saturday 6th, followed by the Regatta on Thursday 11th, and we would like to thank all of the volunteers that make these annual events possible, and for the fun and enjoyment they provide for all that take part or view as spectators.

By now the Lift should have been re-opened, and the plans for the longer term (including new Bridge) will have been on public display, and we are working on plans for the opening of the £800,000 project in Spring 2017.

Shanklin Chine became one of the earliest tourist attractions on the Isle of Wight, with records of the public visiting dating back to 1817. Immersed in a plethora of history there is something truly unique about this Island attraction visited by many millions of people since it opened during the reign of King George III.
This year visitors will get the chance to view a rare and special collection of previously unseen landscape photographs from the pioneering Victorian photographer Julia Margaret Cameron, including a photo of Shanklin Chine’s waterfall. Visitors can also learn about the history of one of the greatest secret successes of the Second World War, the PLUTO fuel pipeline for operation Pluto (Pipeline under the Ocean) supplying fuel to allied forces in France. With seasonal art exhibitions, a Victorian tea room, nature and heritage displays and a gift shop, visitors of all ages can enjoy a trip through Shanklin Chine... a wondrous secret discovered and enjoyed by so many visitors over its historical reign as the Island most original tourist attraction. Perhaps one of the most stunning aspects of Shanklin chine not to miss this summer is the Chine Lumière... where the whole of the tree lined gorge is illuminated with beautiful lighting from top to bottom every night until 11th September. It’s certainly a spectacle to behold and well worth the visit to experience the lights alone.

Sandown Report from Heather Humby - Telephone 01983 402024 E.mail heather.humby@sky.com 7, Pier Street, Sandown, PO36 8JR NEW BANDSTAND FOR SANDOWN? - In past years, Sandown has always had a bandstand, and for many years it was situated at Ferncliff Gardens, and then replaced by Sandown Town Council at Eastern Gardens, which, following a severe storm, collapsed. The council then attempted to re-establish the bandstand at Eastern Gardens, but due to various problems, and the proximity of flowerbeds, decided it was not practicable option. As president of the Sandown - Shanklin Military Band, I am aware that the band would like to be able to return and perform concerts in andown, as they currently do on a weekly basis at Rylstone Gardens, Shanklin. It is therefore my intention to request Sandown Town Council, together with Sandown Community Partnership, to explore the various options to obtain a new bandstand and bring concerts back to Sandown, both for residents and our many tourists. SANDOWN GREEN TOWN VOLUNTEERS - What an excellent job our Green Town volunteers are doing for our town. They tend our flower beds, and also pick up much of the litter discarded in our parks. Recently, I saw two volunteers, armed with litter pickers, removing debris from the roadside. As the care of flowerbeds and parks and gardens is now largely the responsibility of Sandown taxpayers, their community spirit is to be applauded, and deserves the thanks of all residents.
suggestion from a member, that business premises within Sandown should be asked to bring ‘Flower Power’ to the town, by erecting hanging baskets outside of their premises. It is felt that a High Street bursting with blooms, would make the town more attractive to both residents and visitors, and encourage more people to ‘shop locally’. SCHOOL CROSSING PATROL PROVISION Sandown County Councillor, Ian Ward has informed Sandown Town Council that it is untrue that Isle of Wight Council are to request local councils to pay for School Crossing Patrol’s. IWC is currently negotiating with schools to persuade them to meet the costs from their school budget, and to date this is proving to be successful. PUBLIC CONVENIENCE TRANSFER TO TOWN COUNCIL - I have always maintained that making local councils responsible for public toilets, was unfair to the taxpayers of Sandown Bay, however it is good news to hear that Isle of Wight Council are at least considering the transfer of freehold documents of toilets, to town and parish councils. It is hoped that local councils will also be given a one off grant of approximately £1k per toilet to help with maintenance.

Imagine being in the situation where you go from being fit and healthy leading a happy life without a care in the world to being told you have a brain tumour… Well this is what happened to Mark Grimes and everyday this is happening to children and adults across the world, the UK and on the Island. In a matter of moments your whole world can be turned upside down and vigorously shaken. The positive to this story is that Mark has survived and a year since being given the devastating news and undergoing brain surgery he has now returned to full duties at work as a fire fighter. Unfortunately this is not always the case for everyone… Mark and his wife Kathryn have taken this tragedy and learnt that this could happen to anyone, the tumour wasn’t hereditary and is not curable but it is controllable and through their journey they have realised that they were alone most of the time, there was only the minimum of help and support from others here on the Island and this is where The Wight Brainy Bunch originated. The aim of The Wight Brainy Bunch is to support and raise funds for Brain Tumour Charities and Smile4Wessex for intensive research purposes and for ongoing support to all patients. More closer to home they have set up a support group which is not just for the patient, but also for family and friends as they all need help and support for the changes that are taking place in their lives. The support group is held on the last Tuesday of the month at Wessex Cancer Trust, Lugley Street, Newport from 6pm -7pm but most times it runs over as new friendships are made and built upon. Anyone going through any brain trauma/injury is welcome to go along. You will be able to meet with other people who are going through or have been through the same and they may be able to offer advice and support so nobody need ever feel alone. The Wight Brainy Bunch has been holding fund raising events and in June they had their Mad Hatters Tea Party which raised a further £654 and so far in total they have raised £15,032. They hope to continue to raise much more than this and through their ongoing dedication they will be able to support many more Island families coping with this devastating disease. In an ideal world enough money could be raised so that facilities were available here on the Island to cut down on the stress of having to travel to the mainland for consultations and appointments. Their next big event is the Blue Light and Black Tie Charity Ball which is being held on Saturday 3rd September at Ryde Castle. Tickets are £35 and include a 2 course menu and you can book your tickets at www.thewightbrainybunch.org.uk/product/blue-light-black-tie-charity-ball-tickets or by calling 07850 255984. Please support this charity as much as you can as you never know who might be next to be affected by this disease as I bet you didn’t know that 16,000 people each year are diagnosed with a brain tumour and more children and adults under 40 die of a brain tumour than any other form of cancer. Before I met Mark and Kathryn I had no idea about these statistics and meeting them has opened my eyes and now I know why they are so passionate about The Wight Brainy Bunch and helping other families. 14
