Dear Readers Thank you for picking up a copy and welcome to the August issue. As I write this we are having another mini heat wave and the whole Island has been bathed in sunshine. The beaches have been packed and there really isn’t a better place to spend your summer holidays. There are many events happening throughout the coming month and you will find the ‘Dates for your Diary’ on pages 14 and 15 and if you have an event happening in the future feel free to email the details and we will include it in the next issue. You can read this issue and the other areas we cover online at www.islandmagazines. co.uk and you can also subscribe to receive an electronic version via email each month by emailing shanklinmagazine@gmail.com and type in the word SUBSCRIBE. I hope you enjoy this issue which is packed with news, editorials, adverts and the ever popular puzzle page which really should be enjoyed whilst sitting in the sunshine with an ice cream. I hope you have a great August and I look forward to catching up with you next month.

Monthly News Report for Shanklin. Richard 07854 083229 Jon 07964 869338 Email. priest.gilbey@live.co.uk The £1 million Shanklin Lift renovation has been completed and a daily service is in operation, enabling visitors and residents the opportunity to enjoy the brilliant weather being experienced on the Island this summer, as well as enjoy the range of attractions and activities provided on the Esplanade and Revetment, including the 200th Anniversary of Shanklin Chine. Shanklin will also be benefitting from a £6 million+ investment by Southern Water, a project planned to improve the quality of the bathing water in the Bay, recognising the efforts made by the Town Council to secure the prestigious Seaside Award. The Town Council have also campaigned to secure upgraded recycling facilities along the seafront, as well as try to tackle Spa site fly-tipping, something raised with the Local Authority. We are pleased to say the 8 new duel recycle units are now installed, so thank you to Island Roads and the IWC waste management team for working with us, this will potentially allow for more recycling from our busy seafront as well as reducing litter on the beach. We have also worked with Southern Vectis to launch this year’s Breezer Bus service, including a virtual museum project and audio tour of the route, and students from St Blasius Primary School have helped research the route and took part in the launch. Already Shanklin’s Rowing Regatta and the Challenge and Adventure Dash & Splash events have benefitted from the improvements, and the forthcoming Regatta and Chine celebrations will add to the programme of activity along the seafront. 4
The Town Council have also raised concerns about the threat to our Sunshine recording station, and the potential removal of the station could impact on the profile that has been given to the weather in Shanklin for generations – we have proposed alternative locations and asked for the authorities to review their decision. SHANKLIN PROJECTS Residents may be aware of a spate of vandalism in both Tower Cottage and Falcon Cross Toilets, with significant criminal damage and disrupting the availability of these much needed amenities: hopefully, the £100,000+ Town Council investment in these facilities are well underway and the Tower Cottage renovation is the first location to be completed with the addition on 24/7 CCTV, Falcon Cross will also benefit from a makeover to its facilities to include 24/7 CCTV coverage. All being well both these sites will be completed by the beginning to mid-August. Falcon Cross has also benefitted from a donation from Regal Resins to tidy up the rather unsightly patch of grass under the tree, so a big thank you to Nigel and the crew for doing this. We’ve also had the bin replaced and relocated to a more usable location; this will be swapped for a duel recycle unit as soon as Island Roads have delivery of one, introducing a new recycling location to the Town for general walk-by waste. The Town is also short listed for Green Flag and South-East England in Bloom - recognising the continued investment in Grass Cutting, verge maintenance, hanging baskets and town square troughs: with continued positive comments being made about the War Memorial and our thanks go to Warden Terry Carpenter.
Monthly News Report for Shanklin continued... Our Community Library recently celebrated 5 years of volunteering, recognising the contribution of those involved in providing this much needed and valued public facility, with the introduction of improved shelving being well received, as has improved seating in the Children’s section – there are plans for a Carer’s project in the Autumn, building on the established community strengths. The Town Council is continuing to support the United Reform Church in its renovation plans, including help with the Clock being made operational again. Help has also been given to Shanklin Town Brass Band and the annual August Carnival programme of processions, treasure hunts, and activities for children.

Shanklin Chine: Marks its 200th Anniversary In 2017, the famous local attraction will be celebrating its 200th year as a tourist attraction with a special exhibition, which local Island people will find fascinating. It tells the charming story of the Chine and features sections about the wildlife, nature and art that have made the attraction so endearing for millions of visitors over the last two Centuries. Being the Island’s oldest tourist attraction truly is a spectacle of nature. Shanklin Chines was carved by Mother Nature’s own hands over thousands of years, the stunning tree lined gorge cuts its way from Shanklin Old Village to the sandy beach and esplanade far below. There is no better place to spend an afternoon enjoying a relaxing cream tea, and the Chine boasts such a tranquil and picturesque location for a tea stop with friends and family. The Chine’s “original” Isle of Wight cream tea has been enjoyed by visitors for nearly 200 years. You can stop, relax and take in the beauty of the nature all around you...the perfect place to escape the crowds on the beach below. Visitors are encouraged to return at night in Summer and October for the Chine Lumière, when hundreds of lights illuminate the narrow paths, streams and waterfalls held within. A special return ticket is now available allowing for two visits over seven days to make the most of the attraction both day and night.

Report from Sandown Town & County Councillor Debbie Andre. Tel 07948 757977 E- debbie.andre@iow.gov.uk debbieandre4sandown It’s now been over 2 months since I was elected and I’ve been busy listening to you, my residents, and trying to tackle the issues raised by you. Here’s an update on progress so far: Toilets - One of the biggest areas of concern amongst Sandown residents at the moment, quite rightly, is the appalling state of our council toilets, especially with the summer tourist season getting into full swing. As many of you will already know, I have made regular visits to the four toilets currently managed by the town council and not just because I needed to use them! Namely, Yaverland, Eastern Gardens, Pier Street and St John’s Road. I am liaising with Marion, our town clerk, to effect repairs in the interim, but will also be speaking to other town councils to see how they manage their toilets to keep them up to the standard that we all want to see. The good news is that we now have an environment committee who have been tasked to deal with such issues and I will be making recommendations in due course to be taken on to full council. I’m very grateful for those residents who have contacted me to highlight specific issues with the toilets, even with videos. For anyone who thinks that the life of a councillor is a glamorous one, think again! Training - As a newly elected councillor, in order to serve you best, I am undertaking as much training in the various aspects of my new role as I can. This month I have been attending sessions organised by the Isle of Wight Association of Independent Councillors, along with several other 16
Sandown Town Councillors. These sessions go into some depth about the responsibilities and remit of being a town councillor and are also helping to dismiss some of the myths that exist. I look forward to putting the knowledge into practice. There is also a chairman’s course coming up later in the year that I will attend along with other councillors from your Sandown Town Council. I’ve also been attending briefing sessions organised at County Hall to inform councillors about the Highways and PFI contract and the Waste Management Contract. In my role as your County Councillor, I can escalate matters to the highest level in order to get the best chance of a resolution and am now gaining a greater understanding of what can and can’t be done to assist and represent you, my residents. T-Rex - I am now receiving invitations from various island organisations in respect of my role as your elected councillor. One such invitation came recently from Dr Jeremy Lockwood, the Chair of the Friends of Dinosaur Isle Museum, who offered to show me around the museum. I couldn’t resist such an opportunity and was quite amazed at the breadth and scope of the team. The collection dates back to the 1860s and includes finds as recent as the previous week. Apparently Compton Bay is a treasure trove of fossils just waiting to be discovered. Island enthusiasts often bring their finds into the laboratory where they are painstakingly freed from their solid masses, to be

Many residents already keep in regular contact with me and I very much appreciate your support. I welcome your input and urge you to contact me, via any of the above contact details, with your concerns, so that I can try to get the information needed to resolve any issues before they become bigger problems. Thank you for putting your trust in me. I will always try to “Put Sandown First”. Together we can bring our wonderful town back to life.

Bringing the Surgery to your Doorstep by Dan Forster The Mobile Vet provides an Islandwide veterinary service in their bespoke mobile vehicles and also have a fully equipped veterinary surgery at the IOW Pet Centre, Watergate Road, Newport. New services on offer include CT scans and laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery. They are the only vets on the Island to offer these services. Laparoscopic surgery is standard for all human patients as it is significantly less painful. The surgery involves operating through two tiny incisions in the abdomen and utilising cameras & specialised tools through the holes. Patients are up and about much faster than an old fashioned spay. No more head collars and owners do not have to take days off work to look after their pet. After securing several awards for customer service & innovation, including a recent Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation and a trip to meet the Queen at Buckingham Palace; the team continue to offer a personalised approach with extended consultation times at the base & in clients’ homes allows the Mobile Vets to connect more with their patients/clients. Although the option to visit the base or have a home visit allows diversity, the home visitation service remains at the heart and soul of the business which continues to focus on providing an exemplary customer service whilst maintaining a professional and caring experience for its patients. Perfect Homemade Burgers It’s definitely BBQ season and you can’t beat the taste of a homemade burger. This recipe is just 6 ingredients and takes less than 20 minutes to make so you won’t be tied to the kitchen. This recipe is using beef mince but you can easily substitute it for turkey mince for a more leaner option without losing any of the taste. These burgers can be cooked on the BBQ, under the grill, fried or in the oven. Sandwich your burger between a floury bap or a ciabatta roll, top with fresh lettuce, sliced tomatoes, red onion, cheese and a spread of relish. These will be loved by adults and children alike

Top tip: The eggs and breadcrumbs aren’t essential but will help bind the ingredients together. Serves 4 Ingredients • 500g good quality mince • Good pinch of oregano • 1tsp salt • Pinch of black pepper • handful of breadcrumbs or 2 slices of bread • 1 egg, lightly beaten Method 1. 2. 3.

Place the ingredients in a large bowl and mix together or whizz all the ingredients in a food processor until the mixture starts holding together. Shape the burgers into round flat discs with wet hands. To get perfectly round shapes, press the mixture into a metal pastry cutter. Don’t over-handle the burgers Place the burgers on the barbecue or in a frying pan and cook until they’re done all the way through and there’s no pinkness in the middle. To check this, press down the top of a burger with a fish slice - if there are pink juices oozing out, then cook for a few more minutes. Serve on a lightly toasted ciabatta with salad and toppings and enjoy!!! 19
