Welcome to the August issue and if you are a regular reader of Island Magazines I would like to take this opportunity to thank you on behalf of myself, advertisers and contributors for picking up a copy and supporting this popular community magazine. If you have only recently come across this publication I hope you find it an interesting read? Our main aim is to play a key part in the local community by sharing local news, information and supporting local businesses by offering them a platform to promote themselves and the services they offer. I always like to give a little mention about the weather, and all I have to say this month is wow.... it’s been hot! The Island is getting busy and the calendar is full with local events and carnivals and you can find details of these on pages 14 & 15. There is a lot of hard work from volunteers in the preparation of these events and I hope you get the chance to enjoy some or all of the carnivals that the various towns host. It’s what summer on the Isle of Wight is all about.

Shanklin Chine celebrated its 200th Anniversary Year in 2017 making it the Island’s oldest established tourist attraction. Millions of visitors have passed through the stunning tree-lined gorge, gazing at its breath-taking natural beauty...an inspiration to generations of visitors for two Centuries. A Sight of Nature Conservation - Shanklin Chine is now a registered Charity (1173736) to ensure it is preserved for future generations. The wondrous Chine here is a very greatlion; I wish I had as many guineas as there have been spyglasses in it” John Keats - July 1819 There are few places on the Isle of Wight, let alone England, that can boast such a tranquil and picturesque location. The Chine truly is a natural spectacle, carved by Mother Nature’s own hands over thousands of years. It cuts its way from Shanklin Old Village to the sandy beach and Esplanade far below...and is the perfect place to spend a lazy morning, afternoon or evening. Seasonal Exhibitions, Tea Gardens, Nature & Heritage displays and Gift Shop - visitors of all ages can enjoy a trip through our glorious Chine. Wander amid the natural tranquillity until dusk, and then enjoy the hundreds of lights illuminating the narrow paths, streams and waterfalls during the summer whilst enjoying performances from our talented performers playing every week through July & August.

Report from Sandown Town & County Councillor Debbie Andre. Tel 07948 757977 Email:- debbieandre4sandown@gmail.com debbieandre4sandown This last month has been very much focused on my involvement with and commitment to our Sandown Bay Academy students. I accompanied a group of Year 7 students on a taster day at Southampton University. The students were set a variety of tasks and challenges designed to give them a taste of university life and to show them the opportunities that exist, to inspire them at an early stage. SBA are very fortunate to have Mrs Adams as their careers adviser and I would like to express my personal thanks for her dedication and commitment in creating such excellent opportunities for her students. Also, at SBA last month, I was delighted to attend the opening of the Baylink Olympics. This is a sporting event over two days that is wholly organised by the students themselves and it was inspiring to see so many of our island primary children taking part.
Cretaceous past. Sandown has the potential to become the British Dinosaur Centre and a worldwide tourist attraction. I am also very keen to promote “Plastic Free” and have become aware of how much plastic we use and the detrimental effects that it’s having on our environment. This has recently been highlighted at both an Environmental Conference on the island and a plastic/ environment forum, both of which I attended. There are some small changes that we can all make individually, such as refusing a straw, using a reusable cup and making use of all the recycling facilities provided that can make a huge difference collectively.
I have once again been in touch with Premier Inn and am very pleased to be advised that the remedial measures, necessary before the building of the hotel can take place, are at the point of being agreed with the owners prior to being implemented. The building will start in earnest in September, after the summer season, and it’s planned that the new Premier Inn will be open in time for next summer.
Finally, I would like to say a huge thank you to the residents of Yaverland who abandoned the World Cup to come out and spend an evening of Q and A with their local councillor. I’m very grateful to their chairman, Len Norman, who organised the evening. Some specific concerns such as on road parking by visitors to the beach came out of that session and I have met with the district steward to discuss options and also called a further meeting with residents to see what measures can be implemented and what impact those measures would have.
The go ahead has been given for the procurement process to start to look for a development partner for Dinosaur Isle. It is very much hoped that an investment partner can be found who will work with the existing team and Friends of Dinosaur Isle, to both promote, protect and expand the existing museum as well as developing the surrounding grounds as a year round visitor attraction fit for the technological age in which we now live, but showcasing our

Monthly News Report for Shanklin. Richard 07471 471960 Jon 07973 860086 Email. priest.gilbey@live.co.uk Following a good summer to date, we are approaching Carnival Season with Shanklin’s on Wednesday 1st and the illuminated on Saturday 4th, followed by the Regatta on Thursday 9th – the Town is fortunate to have volunteers, supported by Shanklin Rotary and the Town Council, that make these events possible for residents and visitors alike. Both the Regatta and Carnival have a full programme of activities, from pedestrian walks to band performances, and work with Rowing and Sailing Clubs to ensure a comprehensive menu of entertainment for all the family. Carnival week also sees an opportunity for the unveiling of Shanklin’s Town Clock, at the United Reformed Church (High Street/ Landguard Road), which, after years of silence, will now be chiming again (probably from 8am to 8pm) and resume its place as a focal point of Shanklin: the Clock Tower was originally damaged in World War 2, and public subscription enable it to be rebuilt, and support from the Town Council, together with a grant and help from IW Council Officers, has resulted in the restoration of the Clock and honouring the memory of residents that died in the War. The re-opening also provides an opportunity to see the History of the Clock, and a special DVD is being produced of memories of residents of major moments in Shanklin’s history – it has been produced to benefit local charities and copies will be available in the Community Library. SHANKLIN COMMUNITY PROJECTS Shanklin Voluntary Youth and Community 10
Centre have been awarded the Green Flag Award, for its support of Green Projects and Initiatives in the Centre, and across the Town, working with Green Town Volunteers on litter picks and a range of recycling initiatives: the work of Val, Bridget and Christine in the Community Garden has won plaudits from the community and the Green Flag is more than deserved. Hopefully, thanks to the work of volunteers and supported by Town Councillors and local hoteliers, the Town should see the reinstatement of the Sunshine recording equipment – helping Shanklin highlight our position at the top of the sunshine league. The Town has also been shortlisted for South East England in Bloom, and are hoping to build on recent successes on Bronze and Silver Awards, as well as best Coastal Town of our size – judges have commended the work at the War Memorial, in Tower Cottage, along the Esplanade, and across the Town – their 3 hour visit also included local youth projects and the British Legion display: again thanks to all that took part and help show of the community spirit that exists. The Town also hopes to mark August 3rd (100 days prior to 11th November Commemorations) with a couple of reflective events, as well as highlighting the significance of events 100 years ago, and the part played by residents in both world wars. AND FINALLY Shanklin Bowling Club are also hosting an open day, to enable past and possible future members to try out the sport and enjoy the facilities available at the Club in Brook Road,
Monthly News Report for Shanklin on Sunday 12th August 2018: and the Club has a rich history and is featured in the DVD of Growing Up in Shanklin. Shanklin Bandstand plays host to Toco Bonito (18th), Lucid (Bank Holiday Monday 27th), Martin Hoy (12th), Bob Howarth (14th and 28th), Sandown & Shanklin Military (1st, 15th, 22nd, & 29th), Wight Diamonds (19th), and the Town Brass Band (5th) – a very full programme thanks to Martin, Karen and all involved. Shanklin Cricket Club are hosting their annual Fun Day, normally on Bank Holiday Sunday (26th) – and there are a range of fetes and fayres for the community during the month with the library posting further details. We hope that residents, and visitors, enjoy a great Summer and continued sunshine – it really helps the volunteers that provide the events looked forward to by the community.
