Monthly News Report for Shanklin. Richard 07471 471960 Jon 07973 860086 Email. priest.gilbey@live.co.uk The Town Council continue to highlight residents concerns about the quality of bathing water in the Bay, and it is understood that the planning application to improve quality has been withdrawn – this has serious implications for tourism, as well as other users of the Beach and Bay, and we will continue to work to achieve the improvements the multi-million pound grant from 2016-17 should secure, including the potential of regaining the Blue Flag. We have also contacted the Regional Crime Commissioner and Local Senior Officers, detailing the serious concerns residents have about recent and ongoing incidents, sadly resulting in fatalities, and we will continue to highlight the need for greater visibility and on street presence - recognising resource constraints, but also the cost of not responding to increase levels of anti-social behaviour. Thanks to all involved in the South East England in Bloom visit to Shanklin, with Judges visiting various community locations and meeting residents – they were highly complimentary of the displays around the Town and we will report back on the outcome of the visit. Work is also progressing with the proposed Library, and construction drawings are being completed and meetings with planners organised – consideration is also being given to having solar panels and creating other environmentally friendly features. We have also started preliminary work with partners across the Bay, to put together a 4

fitting and full programme of events to mark VE Day in 2020 – we are very mindful of the events we organised in Shanklin in 1995, the last year when the May Bank Holiday was moved (the 75th anniversary of VE Day falls on Friday 8th May 2020). We would like to thank Den Larner and all volunteers involved with Shanklin Carnival (Wednesday 7th and Saturday 10th ); and John Fleming & the Regatta volunteers (Thursday 15th August) for putting together a full and fun festival of activities for residents and visitors alike. This year’s Carnival Programme includes a special Keats wordsearch, celebrating 200 years since he visited Shanklin and penned ‘A thing of beauty and a joy forever’, with Dave Woodward (Keats Cottage) donating bed and breakfast to the winning entrants. NB Shanklin Community Library are also hosting a small exhibition of John Keats’ works, with a selection of books available to borrow. Thanks also to Shanklin Town Brass Band for a very full programme from 3pm (unless other time noted) at Rylstone: (Saturday 3rd) Toca Bonita, (4th) Town Band, (Monday 12th and Sunday 25th ) Trident Concert Band, (Sunday 11th) Wight Diamonds, (Tuesday 13th and 27th – 7.45pm) Bob Howarth, (Wednesday 14th & 28th – 8pm) Sandown and Shanklin Military Band, (Sunday 11th) Wight Diamonds, and (Sunday 18th) Martin Hoy. NB With more to follow in September, and over Christmas. continued over the page

Monthly News Report for Shanklin. continued Shanklin Theatre again have a full programme of shows including Showaddywaddy (4th), Best of the West End (Thursdays 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th); as well as Tributes Acts for Bee Gees/Jive Talkin (3rd), Cliff/Wired for Sound (6th), Beatles (14th), Abba (17th) and The Jam (31st); alongside the Savoyards’ performance of Sister Act from Friday 23rd to Monday 26th August. And finally, we would like to wish all visitors and residents a safe and sunny summer, and trust you have an opportunity to enjoy some or all of the events planed in the Town in the coming weeks and months.

Report from IW Councillor Ian Ward for Sandown South & Cabinet Member for Infrastructure & Transport Email: ian.ward@iow.gov.uk Telephone: 01983 403193 Mobile: 07772559093 CROSS SOLENT TRAVEL FOR OVERNIGHT STAYS IN HOSPITAL I wrote in my May 2019 report that both cross Solent ferry companies provided discount fares for Islanders travelling to the mainland for hospital appointments. The discount applies to day r eturns for the patient and a companion; if the patient is a child then two adults are allowed. What was not clear was if the discount applied should the patient need to stay overnight or longer. I sought clarification from Red Funnel and Wightlink who have now both stated that patients who were staying overnight for one or more nights do also qualify for the discount if you can show that an overnight stay is required. To claim the overnight rate, you must present your appointment letter/card from the hospital indicating that you need to stay overnight, along with proof of your address that matches the appointment card. Proof of address could be either driving licence, passport, household or council tax bill. In addition, If you need to travel multiple times with your car please contact their Customer Services number to get a special rate. (Red Funnel 02380 019192 – Wightlink 0333 999 7333) SANDHAM GARDENS PLANS FOR NEXT YEAR Heritage GB who already run the Dinosaur Golf and Go-Karts in Sandham Gardens have planning permission for a new High Nets attraction that is unique to the

8

Island and SE England . This represents another ÂŁ750,000 investment into the Gardens. Heritage GB has a similar attraction in Yorkshire and experience shows that people travel for around 2 hrs to use the attraction. This should bring yet more visitors to Sandown which can only benefit our town. OCEAN HOTEL / KINGS BAR ON SANDOWN ESPLANADE There has been much speculation and rumour about the cessation of work on the site. I eventually managed to contact the Project manager who wrote to me explaining that the company had to suspend work temporarily because of unforeseen problems, but did say that work would restart as soon as possible, and she would confirm the actual start date as soon as she knew. As the summer season has started, I did ask if the site could be screened if work was not going to restart soon. I understand that the company may have financial problems but at the time of writing this is unconfirmed. I have asked the IW Council officers what action can be taken regarding the screening of the site.

Boom Boom!! This month’s front cover certainly shows the trust that can develop between wildlife and a photographer. Whilst relaxing and basking in the sunshine this beautiful creature was happy to be digitally captured by David Cramp.

David is a ‘hobby photographer’ but started out in his school days as an artist, drawing and painting subjects that caught his eye and on occasions a bit of photography with a box camera. He then moved on to a different type of art and made a career as an antique restorer/french polisher but when digital cameras first appeared on the scene his interest in photography returned and has now become an extension of his art. What David would have previously painted he can now capture with his camera. His images are for his own personal use but are gaining plenty of attention when shared via social media. David says “there is no way in the world I could take photos to order – the subject has to be something that just catches my eye” and I am sure everyone will agree that this picture really does catch the eye.

Report from Sandown Town & County Councillor Debbie Andre. Tel 07948 757977 Email:- debbieandre4sandown@gmail.com debbieandre4sandown This month, I’m going to devote my entire article to addressing what I can only describe as the “desecration of Sandown”. I’m well aware of the strength of feeling within our community regarding the increasing number of demolition sites that seem to be taking over our town. That a large proportion of the seafront of the “best beach in Britain” has been reduced to a pile of rubble is unthinkable.

The former Savoy Hotel site: the authority has been advised that working drawings are currently being produced by the land owner’s representatives with a view to proceeding with the redevelopment of the site in the near future. In the interim, the authority has requested that the land owner ensures that the site is kept secure and tidy. I will be checking regularly on progress.

As a resident of Sandown, I am frustrated that, just as we seem to be achieving regeneration and improvement, our hopes and aspirations of a renaissance are dashed by developers who show no respect to the community and act in such an irresponsible way. As your County Councillor, it only makes me more determined than ever to ensure that we are doing everything within our powers as an authority to take action to stop this downward trend.

The Grand Hotel: following my meeting with the enforcement officer, an enforcement case will now be opened and the authority will make progress enquiries with the owner.

With this in mind, I requested a meeting with one of the IOW Council’s Enforcement team to talk specifically about each area of concern and to identify what possible actions can be taken. It’s fair to say that the authority’s powers are limited and some involve legal action and the associated costs which pose a financial risk that has to be considered on a case by case basis before proceeding.

The Ocean Hotel and Kings House: the CarLauren Group who own this property have confirmed to the IOW Council that works will recommence in mid-August, if not sooner, in removing the waste material from the land. That implies that they are only going to clear the site, not continue with the restoration. I’m not satisfied with this response and will be seeking further clarification from CarLauren of their intentions for the future of the site.

Here is a summary of where we stand on specific sites: 14

continued over the page

Report from Sandown Town & County Councillor Debbie Andre. Tarvic2 and the St Moritz Hotel: I will be in contact with the owners of both properties to establish their intentions for their fire damaged buildings. Both sites will need to be fully secured with windows boarded and hoarding erected to prevent unauthorised access.

Blankets of Animals is a small charity set up by animal lover Sam English. With the help of local residents who have been making a steady stream of six and 12 inch knitted and crocheted squares which in turn go to Sam who makes them into blankets. Sam then posts to animal shelters on the Island and across the UK. Sam also collects knitted dog coats and fully made blankets and she would like to give a big shout out to all readers to see if anyone is interested in knitting squares, making the final blankets or helping with posting the packages.
