Well Hello There…
E A F
All I can say about this month’s front cover picture is WOW… I’m sure you will all agree with me that the photo is stunning and is all thanks to local photographer Tara Harvey. Tara knows the secret to such a great shot is waiting patiently while building a trust with the subject. Her patience certainly paid off and she was rewarded with some stunning poses from not just this fox but the whole family.

When Tara isn’t waiting patiently for the perfect photo she is kept busy with her daytime job as a erectafenceiw@gmail.com ‘super seamstress’, where she does alterations to wedding dresses and also every day wear such as shortening trousers, skirts or adjusting the fit on a piece of clothing. As Portable Appliance Testing well as working with a well know bridal (PAT Testing) company, she also has her own business, ‘Alterations by Tara’ and has recently been • Domestic & Commercial kept busy making masks to help stop the • Competitive Rates • All Island Coverage spread of the virus. For more information Call: 01983 754666 for a quote or about ‘Alterations by Tara’ find her page on Facebook or call on 07956 208735. email: info@westwightaudio.co.uk One thing you can also be certain of with Tara is that she is either in front of her sewing machine or behind her camera. A BIG thank you to Tara for allowing Island Magazines to use her photo and I have a feeling that with talent like this her photos will be featured on a few more front covers.

Lockdown has been a busy time for local charity Feline Welfare who were inundated with homeless and stray cats and new kittens. Nikki and her team of foster parents have been kept on their toes ensuring the cats have stayed safe during this period but the time has come to find forever homes for many of them. Our article on page 12 features just a few of the ones ready to move on and they are eagerly waiting by the phone ready for you to call and meet them. On the subject of animals, don’t you think the front cover picture is amazing? We are lucky to have so many talented photographers on the island and you can find the story behind this months star on page 2. This month we have included a rather unusual recipe. Some of you will already be avid fans but some many never of heard of it - check out page 6 and let us know what you think.

Report from Sandown Town & County Councillor Debbie Andre. Tel 07948 757977 Email:- debbieandre4sandown@gmail.com Facebook:- debbieandre4sandown As we continue through the fast-changing way of life that the pandemic has imposed upon all of us, it’s good to stop for a moment and reflect on how we can use this situation to keep the positives that have emerged. As we find ourselves with more time on our hands and much of that time spent at home, our priorities will inevitably have changed. More appreciation of family and friends and how we are all interdependent to a greater or lesser degree. The island has always had a strong community spirit and sense of identity, but we are going to have to ensure that this spirit not only endures, but acts as an enabling force for new initiatives to take root and grow. Greater care for our environment with shopping locally, growing our own vegetables and walking and cycling more. It’s likely that we will have to accept some restrictions to our lifestyles for some time to come so I would encourage you all to embrace these changes and look after ourselves and those whose lives we share. At the time of writing, a “second wave” of the virus is expected to happen from mid October onwards, although it’s not now thought to be as acute. I would urge everyone who is eligible for a flu vaccination to make it a priority this year. There will still be support available for anyone who needs it so please continue to call 823600. I know that there has been a lot of concern about welcoming visitors back to our beautiful island. The IOW Council have launched a campaign to advise visitors of how to stay safe and also how
to protect both themselves and others during their stay with the publication of a “Visitor Charter”. They have also produced a poster to be displayed in accommodation providers advising guests of the procedure to follow if they show any signs or symptoms of the virus. We all need to work together to protect ourselves, but also to support island businesses. As your Ward Councillor, it’s been my privilege to work with leaders within our community to ensure that help is available where needed. I will continue to speak up for residents concerning all matters that are important to you. I do believe that the Sandown community will come out of this stronger, but it’s going to be a long process and I will be actively involved in both promoting new initiatives and progressing ongoing projects to revive and regenerate our town. I will be starting my monthly Councillor surgery again from Saturday 1st August at Yaverland Sailing Club, from 11am until midday, at the outside area, to enable social distancing. I’m happy to hold surgeries more frequently if residents feel that would be of value. Just let me know. A reminder that Cllr Heather Humby is available on 402024 or at heatherhumby@sandowntowncouncil. gov.uk and will resume her weekly Councillor Surgery at Sandown Library when the restrictions are lifted. Stay safe everyone

Cloud Bread Like many others I have recently ‘tweaked’ my diet and one of the main things I’ve given up/cut down on is carbs but one thingt I am really missing is bread. On my quest to find an alternative that wasn’t carb loaded I came across ‘cloud bread’, duly named for it’s light fluffy texture. I was promised it will satisfy my cravings without undoing any of the benefits I have already achieved. For those who don’t know, Cloud Bread is high in protein and extremely low in carbs, making it the perfect sandwich bread for those on a low carb, gluten free, or grain free diet. They take a bit of getting used to but are so easy to make and you can freeze them or keep in the fridge for up to 3 days. Here is my simple tried and tested recipe. Ingredients 4oz cream cheese 3 egg yolks 1 teaspoon baking powder 3 egg whites Salt and pepper Method Heat over to 150C/130C fan/gas2 and line 2 large baking sheets with baking paper. In a large bowl whisk the egg whites with the baking powder using an electric whisk, until stiff peaks form. In another bowl whisk together the egg yolks and cream cheese until smooth, pale and frothy. Add salt and pepper. Next, fold the egg whites a spoonful at a time into the yolk mixture. Be as gentle as you can so you don’t knock out too much of the air. Carefully dollop the mixture onto the prepared baking sheets and gently spread into even 4 inch circles. If the mixture is a little runny when you get to the bottom of the bowl don’t use the last few spoonfuls - only use the fluffy mix on top. Makes approximately 6. Bake for 20 minutes or until lightly golden in colour. Allow to cool for a few moments before carefully removing with a palette knife. 6

Monthly News Report for Shanklin. Richard 07471 471960 Jon 07973 860086 Email. priest.gilbey@live.co.uk We’d like to thank all neighbours and residents for getting in touch regarding the arrangements that have been put in place during the pandemic; the Town Council have worked with partner agencies to open our Public Toilets (Chine Bluff, Rylstone, Falcon Cross, Tower Cottage and Esplanade/Hope Road), with deep cleans and Covid 19 signage, increased cleaning and other special measures. NB Spa Site toilets are owned by IW Council, and the Town Council continue to press for a redevelopment of the site to include purpose built provision as soon as possible, following the Town Council’s campaign to secure £1 million investment in the lift. Over £30,000 has been invested in the Hope Road toilets, in addition to the improved signage from previous years, and further consideration is being given to further improvements. The Town Council are working with partners in Lake Parish and Sandown Town Councils, to address the concerns over some jet-skiers causing problems for other sea users, and although progress has been delayed during the pandemic, councillors have been working of measures to respond to the issues raised and start planning for 2021. Thanks to all of the volunteers that have been involved in providing collections of meds and food shopping deliveries for shielding and vulnerable residents of the Bay – although many volunteers have returned to ‘day jobs’ and some residents are able to ‘un-shield’, the support network
is still in place and prepared for any future spike. The Central helpline is 01983 823600, and is based at County Hall, and if residents wish to volunteer, please contact Community Action at the Riverside Centre on 01983 524058. Increasingly services, such as the volunteer provided 22 and 24 local bus routes, are returning to their normal programmes, with increased capacity of buses and local shops have worked extensively to ensure safety measures are in place to enable shoppers to use the range of shops the Town offers. (please wear face coverings when travelling on public transport and inside all shops) NB: Many local restaurants and food outlets have signed up for the new Government ‘Eat Out and Help Out’ scheme, on Mondays/Tuesdays/ Wednesdays, and residents are encouraged to support local businesses at this challenging time. Thanks also to the local schools for their contribution to the VJ Day 75 projects – plans are in place to hold an event at the new Community Library in Shanklin, as well as wreath laying at memorial, and launch of a commemorative film ‘Growing Up In The Bay’. Following the success of a Seaside Award, both Sandown and Shanklin have received this prestigious award, the Town Council have highlighted ongoing concerns about coastal erosion, the coastal path, and access continued over the page
Monthly News Report for Shanklin along the revetment; concerns have also been raised about the work in the Town Square. Shanklin Cricket Club and Bowling Club are both returning to play; and Shanklin Football Club has received news that funding is going to be provided for new goalposts for Women’s and Men’s Teams, as well as funding for pitch improvements, in addition to the development of a new youth team. Looking promising for the future. Churches across the Town have re-opened within the updated guidance, and details are available on the respective websites. These have also been incredibly difficult times for local shops and businesses, and we know the community will support them as much as possible during current reopening, and recent times have highlighted the tremendous community spirit that exists in Shanklin and across the Island. Take care and stay safe Jon Gilbey & Richard Priest

Feline Welfare - Isle of Wight
Registered Charity: 1084722
The recent lockdown has resulted in Feline Welfare being inundated with cats, not just strays and abandoned cats but many of them needing medical assistance. Her furry visitors all have one thing in common, they are looking for a loving and caring home, whether this is via full adoption or with foster parents!! New arrangements are in place allowing prospective owners to spend time with any cats they are interested in adopting. Skype and Hypnotherapy Times are changing and with these changes we must find new ways to carry on living and dealing with issues that affect our lives. Den Clare is a well know name across the Island and has worked with thousands of local residents helping them with a wide range of issues. With Covid-19 still fresh in all our minds, Den took the initiative to continue helping and supporting his clients through the pandemic by holding consultations via Skype. They are a big success as his clients can relax in their favourite chair or in bed, be warm and cosy while feeling safe and this helps them to drift into alpha rhythm relaxation and let go of controlling restrictions which were so annoying and blighting their life.

Den Clare has now been in practice for DENCLARE3@GMAIL.COM 40 years. He first studied complementary medicines at the age of 15 and has been a registered healer with the National Federation of Healers since 1976. His Hypnotherapy training began in 1968 and is still ongoing. I asked Den if he could explain what Hypnotherapy is and how it works:-
“Hypnotherapy involves the relaxation of the conscious mind to enable reprogramming of the subconscious, which is merely a computer. Having said that it is the most complex and amazing computer of which we understand very little. From a very early age we are conditioned by suggestions from parents, social groups, religion and various other sources, many of which are very negative and attach firmly to the deeper mind. The effect can be felt many years later and can be very controlling. Repetition strengthens habits. So, stopping smoking, losing weight, gaining confidence, coping with stress and many other debilitating actions can be changed for the better. Hypnotherapy allows these unwanted habits to be tackled, and with the introduction of Skype this can be achieved without even leaving home”. Act now and call Den on 866999 to discuss your needs and how he can help. Typical problems which Den can deal with include, weight loss, stopping smoking, exam nerves, eating disorders, fear of flying, tension, lack of confidence, nail biting to name but a few!

Report from IW Councillor Ian Ward for Sandown South & Cabinet Member for Infrastructure & Transport Email: ian.ward@iow.gov.uk Telephone: 01983 403193 Mobile: 07772559093 PROGRESS WTH OCEAN HOTEL SITE I have been in discussion with the Agent of the Receivers of the Ocean Hotel. The Ocean Hotel is just one of 22 properties that belonged to the Carlauren Group; of which 3 are on the Island. The receivers are dealing with these 3 first because of their cross Solent location. 70 people have bought apartments proposed for the Ocean, each has a lease and therefore have a vested interest. Clearly, those buyers will not recover their investment, but negotiations with them is showing some promise and if agreement is reached with them the Ocean could be up for sale within a matter of months. I will keep you updated as things develop. SANDOWN BAY – BEACH MANAGEMENT - WORKING PARTY ESTABLISHED During the Lockdown people understandably made use of our beaches but there were fears and complaints about lack of separation between bathers and jets skis and other issues. My efforts to establish who was responsible to supervise such matters concluded that local by-laws and old rules had become obsolete. It is impractical for the Portsmouth based Maritime Police to cover the whole of the Island. This situation affects all the beaches on the Island, so I raised the issue with the IW Council Cabinet, and we decided to try and establish a beach supervision regime that was fit for purpose. We now have a working party that will focus on the Bay Area first but will include the whole of the Island. BLACK BAG BLIGHT – HAVE YOU GOT ALL YOUR WHEELIE BINS? The Island is blighted by some residents dumping black waste bags and household waste in and around litter bins, on street corners and in parks etc. Much of what is in the black bags is recyclable waste that should go into our green recyclable bins. However, what I have discovered is that some households do not have their full quota of green or black wheelie bins. Each household, including flats, is entitled to have one green and one black bin like those in the picture. If you cannot accommodate 14
