Whilst writing this the sun is shining, the temperature is in the early to mid-20’s and it looks like Summer has arrived... but I am also aware that this can change at the drop of a hat and one part of the island may be enjoying the sun and yet another area at the same time can be taking shelter from the rain. s summer finally here???

We are very lucky to be surrounded by some amazing beaches that are just perfect for swimming and are ideal on those hot days when nothing is more refreshing than a dip in the sea, whether it’s just your big toe, up to your knees or are really brave and commits fully to the task in hand. Inside this issue you will find news, information, some great advertisers, the puzzle pages, our ‘dates for your diary’ section and much more. Our aim has always been to reach out to the community to share news and information and if you have community news you want to share, please get in touch with us via any of the means below. I hope you have a great August and get the chance to enjoy the freedom of meeting up with family and friends after such a long break and you get to enjoy our beautiful island which, come rain or shine, is one of the best places to live. Keep safe and I look forward to catching up with you again next month.

Report from Sandown Town & County Councillor Debbie Andre T:- 400744/07948 757977 E:- debbieandre4sandown@gmail.com Facebook:- debbieandre4sandown It’s been a busy month with lots going on in Sandown. The arrival of the Beryl scooters has had a mixed reception. I think they’re going to be a welcome addition once the initial excitement settles down. I’m told that they do have some safeguards built in such as a very slow maximum speed if taken onto the revetment. This is a trial so if you have any comments to make, please get in touch with me. I’m aware that some areas of our town have been subject to flooding in recent weeks. I recently met with our new Community Resilience Officer and together we are working on a Community Resilience Plan which will look at how best to plan for these situations as well as ways to prevent them from happening in the first place.

I have had several reports, from different sources, about a certain individual who is buying up non-runners, stripping any saleable parts from them, and then dumping what’s left around the College Close and Faulkner Way Industrial estates and neighbouring residential streets. As many of you will know, we now have a fabulous team of PCSOs in the Bay area and I’m working closely with them on a range of issues. I have reported this individual to them and expect to see this practice stop in the near future.

Many of you will have seen the press release regarding a proposal for Dinosaur Isle, put out by a dedicated group of enthusiasts. My Cabinet colleagues in both Regeneration and Environment & Heritage are working hard to develop a plan with the local community This brings me on to Southern Water and the that we can all embrace and that protects and issue with sewerage and effluent being passed sustains our cherished heritage. Life is very stressful and difficult for many at the moment and the past 18 months in particular have not been easy. Some people have taken stock of what is going on and addressed how to cope with these changes in a positive and therapeutic way and found comfort in holistic therapies.

Seashell Healing Crystal Healing Reiki Angel Reiki Reflexology Indian Head Massage

Yvonne Todd is the owner of Ibon’nu Holistic Therapy and has been practicing Reiki for over 20 years and holistic massage for 13 years. Her range of therapies include Angel Reiki, Reflexology, Indian Head Massage, Crystal Healing and more recently Seashell Healing Therapy. Not many people have heard of this relatively new therapy which uses the energy of the seashells along with the body’s own energy. The moons influence on the ocean means that the seashells hold the energy of both the ocean and the moon making them very powerful. Shells have been used for centuries in healing, protection, spiritual and psychic awareness.

Seashell Healing is extremely therapeutic and uses the energy of the seashells along with your bodies own energy. For more info email islandmagazines@gmail.com or call 07880 587931

• First of all a reminder about the Loft insulation phone calls that have been plaguing Island residents. Do not respond to these calls and do not permit a “surveyor” to visit your property. They would, without doubt, find a problem in your loft and then charge you extortionate sums to “fix the problem” • If you are trying to renew important documents online be very careful as there are many copycat websites out there who will charge you to process the application (The DVLA charge will only be for the Driving Licence or Passport etc) it is likely you will also not receive the documents you have applied for. Always use official government websites when carrying out these transactions • Fake Amazon emails are circulating saying that you need to update your account – this is a SCAM do not click on any links • Be wary when buying items on Facebook from apparently local sellers. Reports have been received about fake accounts who will advertise items for sale, take your money and then you receive nothing. If you have paid through Paypal friends and family you will also have no recourse to a refund • Reports of rogue traders again on the Island. Do not engage with anyone who knocks on your front door and offers to do work for you – they will not be genuine and you could find a £20 job turn into a £2000 job and these traders can be intimidating and persistent. As always forward any scam emails to report@phishing.gov.uk and scam texts to 7726. Ensure that you use valid and trusted websites and that any trader you employ is reliable and trusted.

News report from Chris Quirk & Michael Beston IOW & Shanklin Town Councillors. christopher.quirk@iow.gov.uk or michael.beston@iow.gov.uk Chris 07802 705831 and Michael 07885 644426 Bay Safety Marker Buoys Update The replacement buoys were delivered to the Island on Tuesday 22nd June and installed in the Bay during the first week of July. Cowes Harbour Services (CHS) took care of the scheduled installation. The safety buoys future dates for installation and removal will take place early May and September respectively. The IW Council has funded the cost of the replacement Bay buoys, whilst the Bay area Local Town and Parish Councils will fund the cost for storage, removal and replacement each year. Island Line Upgrade Update The arrival of the second new train marked an important step towards the completion of the Island Line upgrade later this summer. With two trains now on the island, preparations are making good progress and on Thursday 10th June the new Class 484 train conducted an important ‘gauging run’ through the tunnel at Monktonmead to rubber stamp the engineering work that has taken place there. The train was towed by a road rail vehicle known as a ‘unimog’ as the power to the line was switched off whilst engineers carried out inspections and tests.

The infrastructure works on the line are mainly complete including the new passing loop at Brading including platform overlays and signalling (although snagging is now taking place). Shanklin, Lake and Sandown stations have now been repainted and the new platform height adjustment work has been completed. Wi-Fi connection and customer information digital display boards have been installed. The old Island Line class 483’s have been relocated to their new homes at the Steam Railway, Holliers Park and in storage for the London Transport Group. The Rail Replacement bus service is running well along the route including the link to Havenstreet. Milestones such as these bring us closer to the completion of this exceptionally complex project, however, with so many variables; it is still too early to give a definitive date for the railway to reopen. Everyone involved in the project continues to work tirelessly to bring the trains into service as soon as possible. continued over the page

News report from Chris Quirk & Michael Beston continued Shanklin Performing Arts Centre Update Shanklin Performing Arts Centre - Community Interest Company was incorporated on the 24th Sept. 2020. When the old Library closed, Shanklin Theatre Community Trust offered to buy the building from the Isle of Wight Council and is now in the final stages of completion. The intention of acquiring this building is the need to expand professional shows at the Theatre, but also the need for community use. It is the intention of the Trust to apply to the Arts Council for a substantial grant, and create a multifunction rehearsal space, dance studio to make it possible to have shows at the Arts Centre when the show capacity is too small for the Theatre. Major work is required to the building, including outside walls and a

new roof replacement. A full electrical inspection has now been completed and the intruder alarm system has been upgraded. A full asbestos survey report has been received and items have been identified for removal by a specialist company.

Gus Jonsson is one of the Isle of Wight’s most sensitive and descriptive storytellers. Vectis Days, his second volume of autobiographical memoirs is out now. Like volume one, Vectis Voices, it continues his childhood memories of growing up on the island, exploring themes of family, friendships, forbidden loves, health and wellbeing and social acceptance in a post-war working-class society. Vectis Voices and Vectis Days are essential reading for islanders and available now from Ryde Bookshop - 135 High St, Ryde, W.J. Nigh & Sons - Shanklin, and direct from www.brandicat.com
