Dear Readers Welcome to the December issue and here we are hurtling along heading towards Christmas and the New Year... and what a year its been. The Rotary recently did a big shout out for their Christmas Shoebox Appeal and you didn’t disappoint with your generosity, and you can find out the final figures on page 2. There is plenty happening across the Island in December whether its lantern parades, Christmas fun days, Christmas Fayres or concerts you will find something for everyone on the ‘Dates for your Diary’ on pages 10 and 11. If you would like to talk rubbish then the Isle of Wight Council and Amey would like to hear your views about the current waste collection. Go to page 9 for full details. Please keep using the businesses that advertise, between them all they offer a wide range of services. Monthly News Report for Shanklin. Richard 07854 083229 Jon 07964 869338 Email. priest.gilbey@live.co.uk We are finalising arrangements for the Town Public Meeting to be held at Shanklin Theatre between 6.30pm and 8.30pm on Monday 5th December 2016. Island Roads will be represented at the meeting, and will be able to update residents on planned roadworks for 2017, as well as their other public realm responsibilities; we will also discuss the Town Council’s proposals to develop our Public Toilets (Jon recently signed Freehold Agreements and secured grants towards capital costs); Allotment Holders from Scotscombe Allotments will also be able to inform residents on the progress made towards protecting the site, which has housed allotments for over 100 years; and there will also be a presentation on the work of Pharmacies, and the threat that a quarter of Island Chemists could close in the near future. We have both raised concerns regarding the action of the Isle of Wight Council over the allotments and the implications for residents, and have involved MP Andrew Turner in this – we have also supported an application to make the site a Community Asset: and we have raised similar concerns over IW Council plans for the running track and fairway sports centre. The Meeting, like previous ones, will provide residents the opportunity to help shape and influence Town Council funding proposals and priorities for 2017, and beyond: the pressure on the local precept is increasing, and we are grateful to all residents that have contacted us over cost saving ideas for the public toilets and other amenities in the Town. CONGRATULATIONS Francisco Alvarez, Pharmacist at Regent Pharmacy, recently received a National Award recognising his work providing outstanding 4

public health services and enhanced patient care in the community – Francisco is a credit to his profession and, with other Pharmacists in Shanklin and on the Island, make a real difference to the lives of residents. Pete Wilson, of Barratts, also achieved Regional and National recognition in the recent Apprenticeship Awards, as well as receiving Barratts Apprentice of the Year – Pete is a former student at St Blasius School, and is actively involved in Shanklin Football Club: a credit to his profession and his family, and we look forward to following his career. Also, congratulations are due to Shanklin Theatre, senior volunteer Roy receiving an Ageing Well Award, and the whole team winning IW Radio Local Hero Customer Service; and Ron Bavin received the Tourism Ambassador Award for his work promoting the Island. Thanks to Tom Bodman and all at the Royal British Legion Club, and Branch, for all of the Remembrance Day events - the Festival at the Theatre, Church Service, Legion Service and at the Memorial. Thanks also to Southern Water over the good news about improvements to Bathing Water Standards; and also to resident Peter Wilson on being shortlisted for a national construction award. We would also like to thank Lake Parish Council for inviting us to contribute to their efforts to keep Public Conveniences in Lake open, we know that IW Councillors Ray and Alan are also working on this, and other projects of benefit to the whole Bay.

News Report for Shanklin continued... Volunteers from Shanklin Green Town, the Theatre, Community Library and Town Council also received South East England in Bloom Coastal Town Award from Brian Capron (Coronation Street) and Jenny Funnell (As Time Goes By) when they appeared at the Theatre. FORTHCOMING PROJECTS We are working with the local branch of the Royal British Legion, to provide a permanent memorial to all Fire Personnel and local residents who died in World War 2 bombing raids on the Town – local artist Karl Stedman has researched the events of the time and a fitting tribute is being developed to commemorate all those that perished in the war. Following vandalism at Shanklin Football Club, we are working to support the Club developing its facilities, improving its amenities, and offering young people the opportunity to take up the sport – the Club dates back to 1888 and continues to run womens/girls teams, alongside men and youth sides. The Town Council is also supporting the Christmas Fun Day, Carol Concert at the Crab on 19th December (with the Town Band), Christmas Tree Exhibition at the Methodist Church, and the traditional Trees in the Square and Old Village – Panto’s at the Theatre add to the celebrations. We hope you have a special Christmas and great 2017. Regards Jon Gilbey Mayor, Shanklin Town & County Councillor

Sandown Report from Heather Humby - Telephone 01983 402024 E.mail heather.humby@sky.com 7, Pier Street, Sandown, PO36 8JR SEWAGE ‘PONG’S’ - The odious smell from Sandown Sewage Depot, that has affected many parts of lower Sandown for many weeks has become the main complaint from residents, at my weekly ‘surgery’. I have now been informed that the IW Manager of Southern Water, admits that there is a problem, and that it relates to the odour control system, which has broken down, resulting in the system being turned off to allow maintenance and repair. Hopefully the necessary work will be speedily undertaken. PROPOSED DEMOLITION OF THE FORMER SANDHAM SCHOOL - IW Council have applied for planning permission to demolish the former Sandham Middle School. As a former long time governor of the school, I am saddened that the school has been allowed to become so vandalised, that demolition is now proposed. I understand that in the meantime, a twenty four hour guard is to be placed at the school. Surely this should have been done when the school was vacated? To date, following demolition, no proposals for the use of the site have been proposed, although housing is sure to be an option considered by the IWC Regeneration team. The school was comparatively new, with a large assembly hall and spacious rooms, and could have been adapted to become a Community Centre for the residents, and been a hub where various agencies including Social Services, Police, Age Concern, etc, could have a presence. At their last Planning meeting, held on 7th November, Sandown Town Council voted against the demolition of the school, and requested that consideration be given to creating a Community Centre for the Sandown area. CLOSURE OF LLOYDS BANK - We have lost our Post Office, and now our last remaining bank 12

is to close. Lloyds Bank will close it’s doors on 24th April 2017. This will cause inconvenience to all customers, especially small businesses, who will have to travel to the branch in Shanklin. THE ‘LOST DUVER PROJECT FOR SANDOWN BAY’ It was great news to learn that Tesco’s ‘Bags of Help’ programme have given £8000 to the ‘Common Space’ not for profit organisation, who are working towards the revitalisation of Sandown Bay. There are three short listed projects, and residents have been urged to turn the £8000 into £12000, by casting their vote at their local Tesco Store. The project is called ‘The Lost Duver’, and the aim is to replace some of the coastal landscape, which once flourished in the area. CONGRATULATION’S - John Davies, Sandown Town Crier, who recently entered the Town Crier’s Championship, and was awarded seventh place. Ben Holbrook, and the committee of Sandown Carnival Committee, who, on November 5th again provided Sandown with a variety of events on the Esplanade, culminating with a firework display. Eric Knight, a big thank you on his retirement as a School Crossing Officer, for having helped a decade of school children to safely cross the road. The familiar sight of Eric will be missed, I am sure all Sandonian’s will wish him a happy retirement. Marion Cook, Sandown Town Council Clerk, who on behalf of the Council, organised the Service of Remembrance at the War Memorial, which was attended by both residents, and visitors to the town.

Sandown Report from Heather Humby SOUTH WIGHT SPORT CENTRE - The Centre, currently managed by IWC, have been given notice by Sandown Academy, that it intends to take over the community management of the site in September 2017. It is understood a draft for dual use, dating back to 2011 had never been signed by AET, who operate the academy. BOUNDARY COMMISSION - The Boundary Commission are to hold a twelve week public consultation period on proposals to split the island into two constituencies, roughly split into East and West. The consultation period will close on 5th December, but as the public hearings are to be held on the mainland, officials are asking as many people as possible to either write or go on line and submit their representations. LIGHTS OF LOVE SERVICE The Sandown Christmas Tree Festival will be held at the Baptist Church from 10 am to 4 pm on 16th and 17th December. The Lights of Love annual service will be also be held at the church on Saturday 17th December at 6 pm. Sandown Fun Day will be held on Christmas Eve, organised by SBA BUDGET TIME Sandown Town Council will soon be discussing their budget for 2017-2018. I remain to have concerns on the amount of services that were once funded by IWC and have now been foisted upon Sandown Town Council taxpayer, and fear there may be more to come, …but possibly not until after the May election!... or am I being cynical? SANDOWN FORUM At their November meeting members agreed to ask Andrew Turner MP, to request that the Island be granted status as a separate county authority, to that of Hampshire, and be restored to its rightful place within the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary. The

island is currently classed as a district. The Police and Crime Bill, currently passing through parliament, contain provisions that will allow such amendments, as the `Home Secretary has an order-making power which enables geographical changes to be altered. Sandown Library Surgery I am available most Saturday’s at Sandown Library, to endeavour to help with any council related queries or problems, between 11 am and noon. May I wish all Sandonians, a Happy Christmas, and a Peaceful New Year.
