Welcome to the December and Christmas edition of Island Magazines. Like me you are probably wondering where the year has gone and the mild weather we have been experiencing certainly doesn’t make it feel like Christmas is just around the corner... but believe me it is!! 2017 has been a great year and Island Magazines has gone from strength to strength and this is thanks to our advertisers, readers and contributors who have continued to support our local community publication. I enjoy receiving emails and phone calls from readers passing on positive thoughts and also keeping me informed with local news and information. Please keep using the services of our advertisers and remember to tell them you saw them advertised here and you can keep up to date with events happening on the Island by going to our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 8 and 9. I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and to once again thank you for your support. I hope 2018 brings us all good health and I look forward to catching up with you soon.

In addition to commending the quality of the new amenities, judges highlighted the improved lighting, security and surrounding decor; and commented upon baby changing facilities, provision for disabled people, safety features such as alarms and needle disposal, and the technology used to reduce utility wastage. This Award, in addition to South East England in Bloom and Seaside Awards, reflect the national bench marking achieved by the Town, and we thank all residents and businesses for contributing to this and for continuing to make Shanklin the destination of choice (in the Staycation top 15).

Plans are also being developed to ensure the Centenary Commemorations of the end of World War One are a fitting tribute to the residents of Shanklin to whom the War Memorial was originally dedicated – with the Royal British Legion and local Churches, we hope to involve local schools, youth groups Further developments, such as the investment and community library, as well as other in Decorative Lighting, continued investment in organisations, in a Town wide project. It’s that time of year again, The Salvation Army in Newport will be holding their Christmas Day dinner. They will also need people to help serve guests during the meal and to chat and share fellowship. You may be the only person that has spoken to some of the elderly folk that come in a while. Finally help is needed to clear away.

Report from Sandown Town & County Councillor Debbie Andre. Tel 07948 757977 Email:- debbieandre4sandown@gmail.com debbieandre4sandown It struck me that, at this time of giving, it’s not the material gifts that we give to others that matter, although they will undoubtedly be well received, it’s the sentiment behind the gift that really makes a difference and touches people’s lives. One of the most enjoyable aspects of being your Sandown North county councillor is meeting “local heroes”, especially at events where they receive recognition for their generosity of spirit and time. They are often unknown to the community at large, working quietly behind the scenes, contributing a vital service that touches the lives of many people, often less fortunate through no fault of their own. I met such givers from all walks of life; from young children who are praised for turning their lives around, making a difference and triumphing over adversity at the High Sheriff annual awards ceremony, to our more senior residents, such as our own Heather Humby, who have faithfully served the residents of Sandown for many years.

Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, contribute a valuable service to our community and brings its own rewards. There are many ways to get involved and it’s also a great way to gain experience which can enhance a CV and increase the chances of getting into paid employment. Community Action Isle of Wight are based at the Riverside Centre in Newport. They “exist to support the 1,500 or more voluntary and community organisations for the benefit of the Island and its residents. We aim to support the maintenance and development of community amenities and services, to help the Island have thriving communities where people get involved, help each other, and have access to the services they need.” If you are thinking of volunteering they’re a great place to start. I appreciate that Christmas can be a stressful time for everyone as well as a joyful one. As your elected representative, I’m available to you as a “first port of call” so please get in touch with me if you need support from any of our public services or voluntary groups. If I have the information that you need, I’ll always do my best to get help for you.

I recently attended a meeting of the Youth Council, together with the Chairman of the IOW Council, Lora Peacey-Wilcox. It was truly inspiring to see young people engaging in debate over the issues of the day and the fresh approach that they brought to the discussions. On a lighter note, I hope to see many of you They have been invited by the Chairman to over the festive season at the various events, bring their issues to Full Council on behalf both in Sandown and around the island, of our especially the Sandown Christmas island’s Eve Fun Day organised and run by youth. the Sandown Business Association. It just remains for me to wish every one of you a very Happy Christmas and New Year. 14
