It’s a Way of Life When I first took the step to embrace and learn yoga I thought that I would be throwing myself into the ‘downward facing dog’ and ‘tree’ positions, and working on ways to make me more supple, but as yet I haven’t tried these poses and I have now realised that there is so much more to yoga than I first thought. If I had to compare it to anything I would have to say ‘an onion’ ... there are many layers to it and it is very versatile. This may sound like a cliché but yoga really is about physical and mental wellbeing and for now I am working more on breathing, stretching and meditating.

Report from Sandown Town & County Councillor Debbie Andre. Tel 07948 757977 Email:- debbieandre4sandown@gmail.com debbieandre4sandown As another year draws to a close, I thought that it would be good to reflect on some of the events that have shaped Sandown and The Bay this year. The opening of The Broadway Centre, the demolition of the Carlton Hotel and Wight City, the ongoing development of Sandham Gardens and the formation of the Bay C of E School have seen a renewed confidence in our town. Whilst some sites in Sandown remain an eyesore, we can now look forward to seeing the new development at the Wight City site take shape, the construction of our very own Premier Inn, and a new Dino mini golf course, in addition to the new go-kart track, with more attractions to come. I’m confident that we will continue to address the sites in Sandown that detract from our stunning beach and wonderful seaside town and I will continue to work with all concerned to effect the necessary changes. Watch this space! I continue to represent you on a number of committees at County Hall as your County Councillor as well as representing you at town council meetings. I would actively encourage you to contact me with your various issues as your views are important to me. Don’t forget, Councillor Heather Humby runs her “Sandown Surgery” every Thursday afternoon between 3pm and 4pm at Sandown Library. No appointment needed, just turn up. Public attendance at our town council meetings has grown substantially this year and I’m genuinely grateful to all residents who have engaged with councillors and become involved in shaping our community. I look forward to working on a town plan 6

to shape the future of Sandown and ensure that taxpayers’ money is being spent in the most effective way for the benefit of all residents. We now have a new website: www.sandowntowncouncil. gov.uk Please take a look at our new website. Dates of council meetings together with agendas are listed. Please come along as I welcome your involvement. We have just celebrated the 100th anniversary of the end of WW1 and I was privileged to attend several events and show my respect on behalf of residents. One of these events was a commemoration at Christ Church, Sandown, attended by the Brownies who had beautifully decorated pebbles in remembrance, which were laid on each WW1 grave in the churchyard. It also reminded me of the Holocaust Day Memorial Service that I attended in January where we remembered those who died not only in the Holocaust, but in other genocides. I feel privileged to be able to represent you on such occasions and am deeply touched by the continued support shown by the community turning out in all weathers to show their respect to those who so bravely gave up their lives for us. I would like to thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve you as your elected County and Town Councillor. It’s been a life-changing year for me, full of challenge and learning, including being selected for a leadership programme with the Local Government Association which I will complete early next year. Thank you for your continued support and confidence in me.

Christmas Recycling Tour By Cllr Michael Murwill - Cabinet Member for Waste Management The IWC, in partnership with Amey, are undertaking a ‘Festive Reduce Reuse Recycle Tour’ around the Island during November and December to inform residents of what can be recycled over the Christmas period. Below are the venues during December: pop along and pick up a free recipe card and recycling booklet.

THIS ADVERT COULD BE YOURS FOR JUST £16 For more info email

islandmagazines@gmail.com or call 07880 587931

They would also like your views on waste and recycling services and an online survey is now open until January 4. It is an opportunity for householders to put forward suggestions for future improvements or ideas on how the Island can recycle more. The council is responsible for the collection, treatment and disposal of household recyclables and waste on the Island — which is delivered through a contract with Amey. The survey can be completed online by going to https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/ r/9Z5GBTY and paper versions are available at County Hall, libraries across the Island and council help centres. Once the closing date for the survey has passed, the information will be reviewed and used to identify possible improvements to the existing services.

It’s that time of year again, The Salvation Army in Newport will be holding their Christmas Day dinner. You may be the only person that has spoken to some of the elderly folk that come in a while. Finally help is needed to clear away. They will also need guests collected from their homes. Could anyone help collect and return guests at the end of the day? Entertainment - They would love to entertain their guests. Food - Carrots, sprouts, stuffing, pigs in blankets, parsnips, roast potatoes, gravy, turkey, peas, Christmas pudding, cream, custard, mince pies, milk, tea, coffee and Christmas cake. Report from IW Councillor Ian Ward for Sandown South & Cabinet Member for Infrastructure & Transport Email: ian.ward@iow.gov.uk Telephone: 01983 403193 Mobile: 07772559093 SANDOWN REGENERATION UPDATE - There is a lot of IW Council supported regeneration activity taking place in Sandown that does not hit the headlines, so I thought I’d write a brief update on the various projects that will go towards achieving my aim of enhancing Sandown as a tourism ‘Destination’. Despite the occasional negativity, Sandown is clearly moving forward and the outlook is very good for us. DINOSAUR ISLE – Culver Parade. Plans to make our Dinosaur Isle Museum into a more attractive tourism destination are progressing well. Invitations to tender have attracted three bids which are being evaluated. SANDHAM GROUNDS – Culver Parade The development of Heritage GB leisure attraction is progressing well. The new Go Kart track has been installed and is already operating. The Adventure Golf attraction has received planning permission and will be ready for the 2019 season. The HighWire attraction has also been approved and is now scheduled for 2020. The planning application for the new Beach Huts has been submitted. Heritage GB has completely refurbished the toilets and the parks drainage system. PIER STREET TOILETS – Sandown Seafront. Plans for the development of a commercial leisure development have been drawn up and invitations to tender will be issued following a Planning application for the site which will be submitted in January 2019. 14

SANDHAM MIDDLE SCHOOL SITE – Perowne Way. This is to be an Independent Living complex of 82 new homes with shared community facilities. Plans have been drawn up and a development brief will be sent out this month and a planning application will be submitted in Spring 2019. It is hoped that this complex will generate around 35 new local jobs. WIGHT CITY SITE – Culver Parade Demolition and preparatory work is underway for a residential development of 47 homes and ground floor commercial premises. Building work is due to start imminently and phased over 3 years. PREMIER INN – Sandown Sea Front. Planning permission for a 100-bedroom hotel has been granted, ground works are underway, and is scheduled for completion in the Autumn of 2019. DOG MESS - LITTER BINS - DOG BINS = CONFUSION? - Lots of residents express concern about the discarded bags of dog mess dropped on our pavements, thrown in hedges and gardens. What is difficult to understand is the number that are dropped near litter bins. I can only think this is done by dog owners who are trying to do the right thing but are unsure if they can deposit their ‘deposit’ in the litter bin? Well, I can confirm that dog mess bags can be placed in both Dog Bins and Litter Bins. Merry Christmas to you All.

Monthly News Report for Shanklin. Richard 07471 471960 Jon 07973 860086 Email. priest.gilbey@live.co.uk Shanklin has succeeded, alongside partner Councils and organisations, for securing the removal of Business Rates for providing public toilets – as residents will know this has cost Shanklin Town Council (and local council tax payers) £11,000 per annum in addition to the costs of providing public conveniences for residents and tourists. We continue to request this is implemented as soon as possible, to enable the Town Council to reallocate these funds and consider developments of other sites within Shanklin – we recognised the poor condition of the Toilets when the IW Council closed them and were committed to a programme of improvement that did not disadvantage the local community. The recent national success, in the ‘Loo of the Year’ awards, highlighted the prioritisation made by the Town Council, supported by the Community, and Platinum Awards, voted on by visitors to the Town, were again awarded to Tower Cottage and Falcon Cross Amenities. TOWN PROJECTS We would like to thank all involved in last months World War 1 Centenary Commemorations, pupils from St Blasius and Gatten & Lake designed mugs, wrote poems and planted Living Crosses as part of the Commemorations; St Saviours Tower Captain Keiran Downer organised a special Bell Ring for the 105 Shanklin residents from WW1 named on the Memorial (together with the 78 Sandown and 58 Lake Residents); St Pauls had a Bay Service; and the Brownies and other youth groups 16

created special poppies; the Local Library hosted an exhibition and members knitted 105 poppies which Curator Terry Carpenter and Green Town Volunteers placed on the Memorial Gates; Age Concern organised a special day for their members: culminating in the Remembrance Day service attended by almost 1,000 residents, and we are grateful for the contribution made by all involved. The Library project has moved forward, with a structural engineer providing a report regarding the renovation work proposed, and the Town Council hope to commission an Architect to design the proposed Library/Office/Hub, and we have also sought guidance from our Auditors to ensure any VAT issues are dealt with prior to commissioning the facility – but recognise that staying in the current location will have increased maintenance costs. Funding has also been allocated to provide Christmas Trees and decorative lighting across the Town, with the Christmas Carol concert at the Crab from 6.30pm on Monday 17th December, with Shanklin Town Brass Band also playing at the URC (8th December) and other locations in the Town. Shanklin Theatre host a programme of Pantos from Snow White (Theatretrain), Goldilocks (First Act) and Sleeping Beauty (Spotlight); and this is alongside shows by the Osmonds, Jason Mansford, and Robert Powell. Monthly News Report for Shanklin continued their annual Xmas Tree exhibition, and the Carnival Association are planning a Santa Day, at Falcon Cross, on Saturday 15th December. 2019 ONWARDS The Town Council have highlighted concerns about the proposed introduction of car park charging after 6pm, the impact this will have on the night time economy, and to local voluntary groups who provide activities in the evening for free, this includes the local Theatre and local youth groups; and concerns have also been expressed about the increases proposed for the lift and the impact this could have on Tourism – previously public meetings have been held to discuss issues such as this and we are awaiting clarification if similar meetings are planned. The Town Council have allocated funding to take forward the Library Project, continue funding for grounds maintenance, and a range of other initiatives including support of the Town Brass Band in its 25th Year. In closing, we would again like to thank local residents for their support and interest in all things Shanklin, and wish them a peaceful Christmas and prosperous 2019. Best wishes Jon Gilbey & Richard Priest Shanklin Town Councillors
