Monthly News Report for Shanklin. Richard 07471 471960 Jon 07973 860086 Email. priest.gilbey@live.co.uk Dear Residents Shanklin Town Council is in the process of agreeing a budget for 2020 onwards, recognising the likelihood of further reductions in service provision by the Isle of Wight Council – already there is an indication there will be a reduction in bedding plants provided along the revetment (this includes the roundabout near Palestine Steps and on the Pier Apron) which will impact on Tourism and local businesses. The Town Council are also, following complaints from residents and visitors, considering options to provide public Toilet provision near the Lift (Spa Site): the Isle of Wight Council closed the public toilets several years ago (following the earlier closure of the Toilets on Osborne Steps), and the Town Council agreed to fund seasonal opening pending the regeneration of the Spa Site (which was a priority of the Town Council). Regeneration of the Spa site has not progressed, the Town Council were not given the freehold (at the time when Falcon Cross, Tower Cottage, Rylstone, Chine Bluff and Esplanade were transferred) and the toilets have now been assessed as not fit for purpose – hence the need to return the toilets to the IW Council for maintenance, consideration of options, and pressing the Local Authority to take forward plans for the site. The Town Council are also actively encouraging residents to participate in 4
the Local Authority’s consultation on the Public Space Protection Order draft – a draft plan that covers Dogs on Leads and Dog Fouling, as well as anti-social behaviour and drinking alcohol in public places. Shanklin has always recognised the need to balance the needs of all residents and visitors, including dog owners, and also recognise that appropriate signage and the provision of dog bins are part of a pragmatic approach to achieving that balance – alongside the adequate enforcement of policies, policies that are respected by responsible dog owners. The Town Council will continue to fully consider the proposals, and submit its views, but recognise residents need to express their views to ensure the final policy is as fair and balanced as possible. Members are also mindful of ensuring investment in future Carnivals and Regattas, the relocation of the library, specific projects such as the Esplanade Clock (owned by IW Council), and the commemoration of VE and VJ Days in 2020. TOWN ACTIVITIES AT CHRISTMAS Guy De Belder and the team of volunteers, in memory of Club Stalwart Dave Porter, at Shanklin Cricket Club (Westhill) are in the middle of an extensive renovation programme in advance of the 2020 season, following their successes in 2019. continued over the page

Report from Sandown Town & County Councillor Debbie Andre. Tel 07948 757977 Email:- debbieandre4sandown@gmail.com Facebook:- debbieandre4sandown As you read this, we will be heading towards the General Election, or it may even have happened. Whilst this is a very unsettled time for our country nationally, we must continue to fight those issues which affect our daily lives, within our community. There are many people who give up their time and skills selflessly to help others. I recently discovered a dedicated resident Dot Perrett, who collects food from local supermarkets for distribution within the community. I introduced her to another of our “Community Champions”, Ali Smith, who runs the Gaslight Café and works tirelessly for our community. Now they are working together and new initiatives are coming from this. I recently met with Janet Mackay, who I’ve known for some years and is the current President of the Lions Club. She is a fabulous cook and was offering to give basic cookery lessons, free of charge. It occurred to me that there might be a link here with the Foodbank and I’m hoping that an introduction will bear fruit (no pun intended). If you haven’t paid a visit to the Sandown Carnival Shop in the High Street, you could be missing out on a real bargain! The staff there are all volunteers and do a fabulous job in keeping the shop stocked up with clothes, shoes, bags, gifts, ornaments, games and even vinyl records. Thanks to them, much needed funds are 10
raised which go towards running our terrific Sandown Carnivals, allow us to participate in carnivals across the island and our everpopular Sandown fireworks. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to the Motivational Preparation College for Training. Up to 30 young people attend at any one time. High standards are asked of all recruits and the training is varied, mixing physical activities with the opportunity to improve academically where needed. This style of education appeals to many who find more conventional teaching difficult. It is designed for those considering a military career and the list of successful applications to our Armed Forces is impressive. There has been a lot of concern over the water quality in the Bay. Keith Herbert, IOW area manager for Southern Water, came and spoke to residents at Yaverland Sailing Club and answered questions about how our water is treated. His presentation was well received. My thanks go to Yaverland Sailing Club for hosting us for the evening. Please let me know if you have any concerns about a neighbour struggling to cope, especially in these cold winter months. People find it hard to cope for a variety of reasons. Being a good neighbour can make a huge difference. Together we can build a strong community that cares.

Abuse has Evolved You don’t need a bruise to be abused. You don’t have to hit to hurt. Abuse is no longer just physical! Just because a person doesn’t put their hands on you, that doesn’t mean they aren’t abusive. ABUSE is control, blatant disrespect and hurtful words.
It doesn’t just happen to women. Men can be victims too. Break the Cycle CIC has been running since 2016 and was founded by Maggie Currie after she realised there was a gap in the support needed by people who had suffered domestic abuse. She has worked tirelessly to obtain grant funding and donations to run the FREE Mind the Gap courses which are aimed at anyone who has suffered abuse in any form. Their regular 12 week courses are attended by local men and women and they can learn how to rebuild their It is NOT okay confidence and move forward positively in their lives on their • To be humiliated in public own terms. The sessions help • For you to be forced to do something you do build support networks, learn not agree with new skills and increase • To be told you are ugly or unattractive self-belief.
• To be forced to choose between your friends or partner/wife/husband • To be controlled • To be made to feel guilty for somebody else’s anger. It is their issue and not your fault.
These FREE to attend courses have produced amazing results by those attending. They have changed the thinking of some people in such a way as they have made the decision not to commit suicide. Others have discovered they are valuable members of society after continuously being told how worthless they were and some have gone on to start their own businesses, gone back into education or, just as importantly, escaped from their abusive relationship and now live confidently on their own terms.
The next courses begin in January 2020. The women only course begins on Tuesday 7th January at 10am and the men only course begins on Thursday 9th January at 6pm. Both courses are run at The Riverside Centre, The Quay, Newport. For more information or to book your place call 01983 754666 or email hello@breakthecycle. org.uk

One Great Island of People, Living in Many Communities Caring and Creative, Inclusive and Dynamic Striving to achieve equality of opportunity in all things and living life to the full
INSPIRATIONAL FUTURES
Our Island is steeped in history, has a workforce and community spirit to be proud of and its location inspires innovation and creativity I Believe that Island people deserve to be listened to and have their issues and concerns strongly represented at the highest levels of Government. By putting Island People First and at the centre of democracy. I will be voting for what best fits the needs of our Island People, in a way that is transparent, inclusive and community focused.
Our Health and Well-Being comes first
above all else and we must support our local NHS, and health workers in finding new ways in addressing the shortfalls of staff and funding. We must invest if we are all to live a good and long life. I will continue to fight for better funding with improved Health and Mental Healthy Services.
I Will Inspire Island Residents, encourage community development, raise peoples spirits and help improve our Island’s Profile. Our people are innovative and creative. I will seek to promote all that is good about our Island. The World We Live In Is The Source Of All That We Are And Hope To Be.
The Isle of Wight and United Kingdom is well placed with its innovation technologies and can make a significant contribution in supporting the reductions of pollutants. There are financial and employment rewards for our businesses in creating environmental innovations. Our Island is in a great position to test new technologies and green innovations. We must take climate change seriously.
ple when peo s en p p ha ly on , Change te, are engaged get involved, voer to demand it. and join togeth I would want to see a small Island visitor tax introduced to fund Cross-Solent Patient Transport and environmental projects. We need to assertively address safety concerns, have more police on the streets and respond quicker to criminal activity. Restorative justice needs to reflect the wishes of victims better. Environmental Health requires improved enforcement powers. Our Cross-Solent ferry operators need a centralised, co-ordinated out of town vehicle check-in. We cannot block Yarmouth, Fishbourne or East Cowes highways. We need to raise education attainment standards across the board, in Schools Higher Education and within existing workforce populations. This requires diversity of learning. We do need a fixed link feasibility study. The outcome of which must be put to our Island people in a referendum. Our people will decide what kind of Island they choose to live on in the future. Our Island is well placed for green innovation and testing technologies. We cannot keep building houses without providing services, jobs or infrastructure.

Especially when that often means that by February New Year’s resolutions are a distant memory”. Since Slimming World was founded in 1969 it’s helped millions of people to reach their dream weight. There’s no magic pill when it comes to weight loss and the best weight-loss plan is the one you can stick to. Report from IW Councillor Ian Ward for Sandown South & Cabinet Member for Infrastructure & Transport Email: ian.ward@iow.gov.uk Telephone: 01983 403193 Mobile: 07772559093 WISHING ALL RESIDENTS, A HAPPY CHRISTMAS & NEW YEAR As we approach the end of 2019, I would like to thank all those residents who have supported me throughout the year and worked with me to make our community a better place. As we look forward to 2020 let’s hope the national political scene settles down but equally important for us, that Sandown continues to attract significant investment to continue our regeneration efforts. We still have obstacles to overcome but I will do my best to overcome them during the coming year. SANDOWN TOWN HALL – BATS & BIRDS DELAY REFURBISHMENT - The refurbishment of Sandown Town Hall has been delayed by the discovery of nesting birds and roosting Bats. Although the birds (Pigeons) are not protected; nesting birds are protected. However, they will stop nesting in December / January and work will be done to ensure that they cannot re-enter the building. Investigations are also underway to determine the legal measures that need to be taken to secure the building from Bats. Hopefully, this situation will not delay the refurbishment too long. WATER QUALITY IN SANDOWN BAY IS GRADED AS EXCELLENT - After reports of ‘Raw Sewage’ being discharged into Sandown Bay I contacted Southern Water’s Area Manager who explained that this is a technical term and not actual raw sewage as we would imagine. The water treatment centres have a defined capacity that normally cope well with wastewater
that requires treatment. However, on the rare occasion that we have very heavy rain or storms the amount of water accumulating may overwhelm the treatment centres capacity so that untreated water can be discharged directly into the sea with the prior permission from the Environment Agency. Southern Water pointed out that our water quality in Sandown Bay was graded as Excellent in 2018 and they expect the same Excellent grading this for 2019. Simply cut a small end on the diagonal off the swiss roll and position on the side and sandwich together with a small amount of frosting. Cover the remaining swiss roll with the frosting and using a fork along the length to give a log like effect. Sieve some icing sugar over the top for a snowy feel and decorate as you wish with either marzipan or plastic decorations. It’s ok to cheat at Christmas... it’s called good time management.
