Och Aye The Moo I hope you like this month’s front cover photo of the Highland cows which was taken by David Trevan. Highland cattle with their long horns and their flowing coats, which gives them protection during cold winters, were originally from the Highlands and West Isles of Scotland and are now a welcome sight across the Island. David Trevan is a very keen amateur photographer who lives on the Undercliff and comes across these beautiful animals on his regular walks around St Lawrence. David has a passion for natural history and particularly wild flowers and before he retired he was a lecturer in Horticulture and Countryside Management at the IOW College and trained at the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew with Alan Titchmarsh. He is a keen member of the IOW Natural History and Archaeological Society and puts many of his wildlife pictures online, in particular iSpot, an Open University website and iRecord, a website that enables people to record their natural history finds. A big thank you to David for allowing Island Magazines to share his photo which I am sure you will agree is stunning and has captured the beauty of these beasts. I hope we will be able to showcase more of David’s work in the future.

Dear Readers Welcome to the February issue. Island Magazines is your local community magazine and each issue is packed with news, information, features, dates for your diary, puzzles and much more. It is also an ideal way to find local services offered by local businesses. From accountants, tilers, health & fitness, property maintenance, warehouse discount stores, life coaching, through to electricians and plumbers - this little magazine has them all. Valentine’s Day is on the 14th February. It’s a time to be romantic and show your loved one just how much they mean to you. Even if you are single you don’t need to miss out, instead treat yourself to something special. Later in the month on Tuesday 28th February it’s pancake day and who doesn’t like a nice stack of pancakes on a cold, wintry day. I know I certainly do!!! If you have any news or events you want to share then please get in contact with me and I will do my best to help. I hope you enjoy this issue and I look forward to catching up with you next month.

Monthly News Report for Shanklin. Richard 07854 083229 Jon 07964 869338 Email. priest.gilbey@live.co.uk We are sure fellow residents will join us in congratulating Shanklin resident Glyn Ellis on being awarded the MBE in this year’s New Years Honours – recognising his work over 19 years, with the RNLI, and his contribution to improvements to inshore lifeboats across the UK. Local Councillor and Voluntary Community Bus Driver, Ian Ward was also awarded the British Empire Medal, for his work in the local community, and he is also very active within the Royal British Legion. Also, congratulations to Claire and James Hoyal on the New Year’s Day birth of baby Romy. SCOTSCOMBE ALLOTMENTS Thanks again to residents for attending the December Public Meeting at the Theatre, and for their contribution to the discussion on protecting green spaces in Shanklin, and, in particular, the current discussion over Scotscombe Allotments. Since then we have worked with the Allotment Association, and the site has now been recognised as a Community Asset – which clarifies the status of the site for all involved. In addition, we have facilitated discussions regarding the maintenance of the site as allotments for the foreseeable future and, without wishing to pre-empt further discussions, all parties are working towards a mutually agreeable solution to the current situation. RECENT CONCERNS Following the Public Meeting, attended by the local Police Inspector, we have had 4
further meetings with local Police Officers to discuss the recent spate of high profile incidents, and the need to support residents reporting concerns and helping address resident issues. Hopefully, over the coming months, we will be able to share details of developments, as well as the regular Uniformed Police Presence at Shanklin Community Library (details in the Library) and briefings at Town Council Meetings: we have also contacted the Crime Commissioner regarding concerns and there is a Public Event planned for February at the Riverside Centre, and we have invited him to Shanklin to talk to local residents. We have also met with Regional and Area Managers from NatWest Bank to discuss their plans for their future presence in the Town, and to discuss options regarding future services to residents and businesses, and we hope to have further details for future reports. Also, we met with the new Manager of Southern Vectis, who was able to confirm the continuation of the Steamer Service for this summer, and is also discussing, with his colleagues, the possibility of introducing a Dotto Train Service – this is very much an initial proposal, and may not be possible, but it is being considered. We have also supported the developments to recreational amenities on the Esplanade, are submitting applications for 2017 Seaside and Green Flag Awards, and continue to seek clarification of opening details for the new Lift and Lift Bridge (but recognise the Health & Safety issues facing the £900,000 project): and we have secured the development of

and the on-going fly-tipping hot-spots in the Town.
PUBLIC TOILETS – FALCON CROSS AND TOWER COTTAGE As highlighted at the Public Meeting, costs have reduced since the Town Council took over the running of all 6 Public Toilets, with opening hours being extended on some of the locations and increased response time to issues using the dedicated number provided on each block– public feedback has been very supportive of the actions taken, as well as for the planned improvements.
In addition, we have (individually and together) been able to attend meetings of Hyde WI, Carers, Age Concern, and other groups, and hope that we can progress some local initiatives over the coming months.
We have met with specialist public toilet designers, and outline plans for 3 ‘state of the art’ public facilities at Falcon Cross and a further 3 at Tower Cottage are being prepared – these will include eco-efficient water and energy systems, improved maintenance, and with each site having a fully accessible facility. In addition, there will be technical features allowing for minimal charging, flexibility of opening, and external security measures – freeing up resources, which would also allow the remainder of both sites to be available for alternative usage as well as possibly generating a small income to help offset costs: this could be a model for the other sites in Shanklin, as well as across the Island. COMMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC We are grateful for the continued feedback from local residents and we hope to take forward concerns raised, in particular regarding security on the Spa site, Bus Stop in Church Road, the need to clean-up the Old Village Duck Pond (hopefully completed by now), trees and the grounds at Rylstone,
Thanks again to all that contributed to the recent Public Meeting, and for taking forward the initiatives highlighted at the Meeting – 2017 is going to be a busy year, but with Town Council and other colleagues in Shanklin, and within limited resources, we hope to protect the services provided and secure the improvements that residents want. Sandown Report from Heather Humby - Telephone 01983 402024 Email heather.humby@sky.com 7, Pier Street, Sandown, PO36 8JR SANDOWN HONOUR WALK - Have you noticed how how Sandown’s Honour Walk is growing, with the ever increasing number of commemorative tiles being erected on the sea wall of the Esplanade? Should you wish to place a tile commemorating an event or a person, please contact Mrs Mereweather, Secretary of Sandown Community Partnership, Tel: 404415 who will send you the required form to complete. Ceramic tiles are 12” x 12” and cost £50 each, there is a limit of up to 50 letters on the tile, which will be engraved with your chosen wording. TEMPORARY VENUE FOR SANDOWN TOWN COUNCIL OFFICE - Sandown Town Council offices are now situated in the former part of Sandown Town Hall, once used by South Wight Borough Council. (Entrance to the office is gained through the door on the left of the main door). The office is open from 9.30am until 12.30pm, when the Town Clerk and her assistant are available. Members of the public wishing to attend meetings of the council, should note that all meetings will also be held at the Town Hall. DATES OF FUTURE MEETINGS OF THE COUNCIL - Planning and Environment Committee. 13th February and 27th February, commencing at 6.30 pm Town Council. 27th February, commencing at 7pm. Residents attending meetings of the council, are allotted fifteen minutes, prior to the meeting, to put questions to the council. St JOHN’S ROAD CLOSURE - Serious concern is being expressed by businesses situated in St John’s Road, which has been closed to traffic for some weeks, due to a dangerous structure situated in the road, which necessitated in placing protective scaffolding around the building. It is felt that the banning of traffic 10
from the road, although necessary, is causing loss of passing trade, and it is urged that IWC take whatever action is needed to resolve the problems caused by the unsafe building. REGENERATION OF SANDOWN - With proposals for extra facilities at Sandham Garden’s, and the welcome announcement that the former Wight City site has been purchased for development, I believe that at long last we arestarting to see the long awaited regeneration of our town. Hopefully, the remaining dilapidated eyesores will now also receive attention. (I am sure I do not need to identify them!) CONGRATULATIONS - To, Cllr. IAN WARD. for receiving the award of the British Empire Medal for his services in setting up a voluntary bus driving scheme, after the Wightbus service was terminated. Ian has thanked Southern Vectis, and community bus volunteers for their support. OUR LOCAL SHOPS. It is always sad to see local shops closing, however we are always grateful to those shops which manage to remain open in the winter months, sometimes at expense to themselves, and help to provide a service to those who are unable to travel to the ever increasingnumber of supermarkets in our area. As a ‘veggie’, I sometimes have to shop out of town, but try to shop locally whenever possible, believing in the old adage....... ‘Use them or lose them’! PROPOSED £600.000 REBUILD FOR COMMUNITY CENTRE - Sandown Town Council have agreed to borrow up to £600.000 to demolish the Broadway Centre, and build a community centre, and also erect houses on the site. The council hope that the scheme can be progressed before planning permission runs out, which would necessitate the council reapplying.
Sandown Report from Heather Humby
GAIL’S HOME CARE
I had always wanted to retain the Broadway Centre, which was formerly the Victorian built, Sandown CE School, sadly however, due to it’s deterioration over recent years, it was felt that it is now past redemption and is no longer fit for public events.
For all your housekeeping needs. Regular, fortnightly, monthly or one off cleans. All catered for by a friendly, honest, reliable housekeeper with 25 years experience and D.B.S. checked For more details, please contact 07961 615959
Personally, rather than build a new community centre, I would have wished to see our town hall brought back into community use, and it is my hope that eventually, a community trust will be formed to attract the funding required for it’s refurbishment. The town hall, situated close to the town centre, could then again become a hub for locally based services, organisations, and town events.

How to survive Valentine’s Day as a single person by Maggie Currie Take advantage of you and really look after yourself on this day. Turn the focus of your attention to you. Buy yourself something special, something you will really love and appreciate. It maybe something that you wouldn’t usually think of buying for yourself, but on this occasion it feels right to do it. Here are some more suggestions for you to feel special on this loving day: • treat yourself to a day being pampered at the spa. • treat yourself to a special meal and enjoy it in the comfort of your own home. It can be a take away delivered to your door. Use your favourite crockery, buy a bottle of wine and enjoy your chosen feast. • watch your favourite film or read a good book. • How about you and some of your best friends getting together to watch a few of the worst romantic comedy films you can find. Have a fun evening with people you love to be with and who love to be with you. • Make a Valentine’s Day resolution to love yourself. Resolve to take some evening classes or to go on that trip you have been promising yourself. Resolve to try new restaurants or to try new recipes. Make a resolution that you will make a start towards the dreams you know you want to achieve. • If you have children why not make the day special for them as well as you. Buy some little gifts - chocolates, stuffed toys, model cars etc. - and make a present hunt game with clues, and they can fun trying to find the gifts and you will have fun watching them. Whatever it is you choose to do, whether it is on your own, with friends or with your children, make sure it is fun for you. Do not: • Find a stranger to spend the night with. You will regret it in the morning and make it worse for yourself when the next Valentine’s Day comes around. • Watch tv programmes filled with loves stories. • Get all dressed up at work as your colleagues will jump to conclusions and make your life a misery all day. • Sit at home being miserable and feeling sorry for yourself because you don’t have someone to share this sill day with. • Beat yourself up for feeling miserable and lonely. A great thing to do would be to wait until February 15th and then treat yourself to a heartshaped box of chocolates at half price, or buy some flowers for yourself for half price. Remember, it is just one day. It will all be over in the morning. Plan your life around yourself and learn to really love yourself again. This will not only be fun and interesting, but loving yourself is the basis of beginning your new life as the new, confident you. 14

If you’ve never given blood before you’ll probably wonder what the Blood Donation Sessions are and what happens there. They can take place at regular intervals at your local community centre, church, or sports club. Giving blood saves lives. The blood you give is a lifeline in an emergency and for people who need long-term treatments. Many people would not be alive today if donors had not generously given their blood. We need over 6,000 blood donations every day to treat patients in need across England. Which is why there’s always a need for people to give blood. Each year we need approximately 200,000 new donors, as some donors can no longer give blood. Most people between the ages of 17-65 are able to give blood. Around half our current donors are over 45. That’s why we need more young people (over the age of 17) to start giving blood, so we can make sure we have enough blood in the future. You can book an appointment to attend or register to be a donor online at www.blood. co.uk or by calling their Helpline on 0300 123 23 23.
