Thank you for picking up a copy of ‘Your Local Community Magazine’ and welcome to the February issue. Without wishing my life away, I am always pleased to see the back of January - it’s always a bit of a dreary month and seems to go on forever!!! At the time of writing this there is a warning that a cold spell is heading our way so remember to keep warm and take care of yourself when you are out and about. If you have older relatives or neighbours please always take the time to pop in and check they are ok and to see if they need anything. This issue is packed with news and information and if you are looking to keep your brain active and alert I can recommend trying the puzzles on page 12. Our ‘Dates for your Diary’ on page 8 will keep you informed of events happening locally and across the Island throughout February. I hope you enjoy this issue and I look forward to catching up with you again next month.

Report from Sandown Town & County Councillor Debbie Andre. Tel 07948 757977 Email:- debbieandre4sandown@gmail.com debbieandre4sandown With Christmas and the New Year a distant memory, we now turn our thoughts to finances. February is the month of preparing budgets and I have been working hard at both town and county level to ensure that you, my residents, get the best value for money from your council taxes. By now, the Sandown public consultation that I proposed and was agreed by your town council, will have taken place. I pledged to consult with you on how you wanted your money to be spent in Sandown and I greatly value your input. This is the first stage in the process of drawing up a town plan and I want to engage with as many of you as possible as we move forward. In addition, an Eastern Bay Regeneration Vision has been commissioned and a document produced which can be viewed at: https://issuu.com/ermc_/docs/the_ eastern_bay_regeneration_vision I would strongly urge you to take a look as it sets out a positive way forward for The Bay with some innovative, but ultimately achievable plans that would bring our town back to life. Significantly, this report aligns with the IOW Council corporate objectives and the Island Plan, details of which can be found on the council website at iwight.com. For some time now, I have been concerned about the lack of youth provision, not just in Sandown, but on the island generally. I am currently setting up a youth club in Sandown. As soon as the formalities have been completed, I’ll be advertising the details so watch this space! 4
I was delighted to be invited to attend the SSRFC Christmas dinner a few weeks ago. Despite appalling weather conditions, the lads gave an outstanding performance at the match afterwards against a Fareham team who didn’t see much play at all! The club are currently raising funds to erect a viewing platform and they have my full support. Please contact me if you would like to get involved. As always, I’m available to you if you wish to discuss any council matters. I regularly attend the Yaverland Ladies Club and the Yaverland Residents Association meetings and it’s always good to meet with residents in a more sociable atmosphere to hear your concerns. Also, Councillor Heather Humby holds a councillor surgery at Sandown Library every Thursday from 3pm – 4pm. She can also be contacted on 402024 and at heatherhumby@ sandowntowncouncil.gov.uk

What is not well known is that claimants can have an advance payment of up to 100% of their claim, which should to tide them over the processing period. The UC Advance should be requested when you first apply for UC or when your circumstances have changed your claim. The advance does generally need to be repaid in instalments, but the UC advisor will discuss those details with the claimant. For more information please ring the UC Helpline 0800 328 5644, or the local Jobcentre Plus. Ian Ward
UNIVERSAL CREDIT (UC) – ADVANCE PAYMENTS I sometimes get asked by residents to help them with issues they may have with benefits claims. While I am no expert, I can generally find some information that is hopefully helpful. Just recently there has been much discussion in the media about problems being experienced by people who are moving from conventional benefits to Universal Credit (UC) or those claiming UC for the first time. One of the main problems appear to be the length of time it takes to process a UC claim thus leaving the claimant without enough money to cope during the processing period. 10

Monthly News Report for Shanklin. Richard 07471 471960 Jon 07973 860086 Email. priest.gilbey@live.co.uk The Town Council are in the process of finalising the 2019/20 budget, and ensuring that vital community services and activities continue to be funded within the limited resources of the Town Council, at a time when considerable financial pressures are faced – grounds maintenance, public toilet provision, beach safety, an environment enforcement officer, road crossing patrol, community library and many other amenities will again be prioritised. We are in the process of commissioning an Architect to take forward the relocation of the Library, designing a new amenity alongside Falcon Cross Hall and Public Toilets – there are several practical issues that need to be addressed to ensure best value and the provision of a resource to meet a variety of needs as well as compliment our main shopping areas. We continue to campaign to secure a reduction in the £11,000 per annum business rate charge (in addition to operational costs) for running public toilets in Shanklin; highlight the impact of the proposed IW Council increases in parking charges and how this will effect local trade and business; and further cuts to local services – we will continue to report on any progress.
the seaside award in 2019 onwards reflects the efforts of the Town Council. We also welcome St Blasius Primary Academy’s new Principal, Mr David Burt, and we are sure he will maintain the School’s tradition of involvement with the local community, and actively engaging with partner groups and organisations. Partnership work with Lake Parish and Sandown Town Council is ongoing, and we are currently working on an information project highlighting the location and availability of defibrillators across the bay – recognising how pro-active the community has been to secure these vital amenities. Shanklin Cricket club have started indoor net practice in advance of the new season, junior sides are also playing in the Rew Valley League, and further details are available through the clubs website or contact club officials, including Matt Lambourne and Jack Powell. Shanklin Theatre, after a brief break, have a programme of Sherlock Holmes and the Sign of Four performances, an afternoon Variety Show with Jimmy Cricket, a Spotlight performance of ‘Diva’, and the Lee Memphis Show.

Monthly News Report for Shanklin continued Council has limited resources and is very mindful for any implications regarding the precept. We are also working on applications for Green Flag, South East England In Bloom, alongside the Seaside Award, and thank residents for their help with these initiatives. The Town Council are also very aware of the implications of the IW Council’s draft Island Plan and, with the Brownfield Site plans, on the shape of the Town in the Future – we encourage all residents to read the documents on the IWC website and comment; and this should be considered alongside the IW Councils regeneration plans for the Bay (and thanks to all residents that were able to attend the event arranged by the Town Council last month – we felt it was vital for residents to be fully informed).
Thanks again to all of the voluntary groups and organisations that continue to make a difference to lives of residents and visitors to the Town – you really do make a positive difference. Best wishes Jon Gilbey & Richard Priest Shanklin Town Councillors
