Welcome to the February issue which arrives with a big sigh of relief that we made it through January; the month that goes on and on and on, which wasn’t helped with all the rain and wind that we’ve experienced recently. On a positive note you will notice that the evenings are slowly getting lighter which means that Spring will be with us shortly. This months issue is packed with news, information, features and much more. Our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 12 and 13 will keep you busy with events happening across the Island. This month also sees Valentines Day on the 14th February and near the end of the month on the 25th is pancake day. We have some great local businesses advertising with us and please do support them by using their services and remember to tell them you saw them advertised here. I hope you all have a great February and I look forward to catching up with you again next month.

Report from Sandown Town & County Councillor Debbie Andre. Tel 07948 757977 Email:- debbieandre4sandown@gmail.com Facebook:- debbieandre4sandown February is the month where we consider budgets for council spending for the next financial year. Like many of us, myself included, this is usually the time to tighten the purse strings post Christmas as we all consider the state of our finances. Both within the Isle of Wight Council and Sandown Town Council, in this seemingly unending time of austerity, despite recent assurances that those days are over, providing statutory services whilst balancing the budget have become a real challenge, especially with year on year savings imposed where the fat has already been stripped away. This leaves little scope for new initiatives outside of our statutory responsibilities. Initiatives that could make a real difference to people’s lives. To this end, I have been looking at local funding sources where money has been ring-fenced for certain areas. I have found that there is a sum of money around £4000 available for Los Altos Park. I’m now working with our clerk to identify a project where we can utilise these funds for the benefit of our community. At a recent meeting of the Sandown Forum, I was reminded of the hours that are given up so freely and by so many in our community groups. If you are not already a member of a community group and you have time to spare, even a couple of hours, please get in touch with me, stating your area of interest and I can let you know which groups there are and how to get in contact with them. We are very lucky to have so many willing volunteers. Watch this space for news of a volunteer fair in Sandown coming soon! 4

There are some residents within our community who have, through no fault of their own, become socially isolated. If you become aware of such an individual, please contact me so that they can be offered support. Sometimes it can be difficult for someone to re-engage with society if they have been isolated for some time, but support can be offered, if not always accepted. Works are progressing well at the Premier Inn site and I’m told that they are “currently on course to complete construction and open [our] doors to the new hotel and restaurant in Summer 2020.” The update also states that recruitment will take place roughly 3 months before opening and it’s company policy to recruit as many staff as possible from the local area. I am currently waiting for an update on the Esplanade Hotel from the IOW Council Enforcement Officer. I have asked if the future plans of the new owner are known. In the meantime, I have alerted her to the safety issues that currently exist with this property which cannot be allowed to remain any longer. Don’t forget Councillor Heather Humby’s councillor surgery at Sandown Library every Saturday from 11am – 12pm, or you can contact her on 402024 or heatherhumby@sandowntowncouncil. gov.uk Please get in touch by the means above if you have any issues that you would like to discuss. I’m happy to meet up for a chat if you prefer.

Café Bridge Coming Soon The Isle of Wight will soon be playing host to its very first Café Bridge, and organiser Philip Watson is excited to be bringing this event to Yarmouth. The invitation is open to all standards of bridge players and he hopes players from across the Island will support the event and help raise some much needed funds for The Mountbatten Hospice.

What is Café Bridge? This daytime event involves playing bridge with pre-dealt hands in Yarmouth’s finest licensed establishments. Walk to the next pub with your partner after each round, guided by a roadbook and map given to you at registration. Soup and sandwiches are provided wherever you land up at lunchtime. Café Bridge started in Holland, and is now widespread in the UK. It combines playing bridge in social surroundings with walking around a pleasant British town – all while raising money for a good cause and giving bridge some needed publicity. On 26th March, island residents will have the chance to join visitors from Hampshire, Surrey and Dorset at Yarmouth’s inaugural Café Bridge day. Pre-booking is required – use the link on the main advert, or call Philip on 07712 018645 with inquiries. The organisers look forward to welcoming you in March.

Report from IW Councillor Ian Ward for Sandown South & Cabinet Member for Infrastructure & Transport Email: ian.ward@iow.gov.uk Telephone: 01983 403193 Mobile: 07772559093 PLANNING PERMISSION FOR THE OLD KEBAB SHOP IN SANDOWN HIGH STREET AGREED At the meeting of the IW Council Planning Committee in December I put forward a strong case for the old Kebab Shop and adjoining property in Sandown High Street to be granted planning permission for its proposed renovation and extension. Planning Officers wanted to reject the application, but I argued that such commercial investment and development was key to Sandown’s regeneration etc and the council should be facilitating investment, not obstructing it; we have to live in the real world and apply common sense. I’m very pleased to say that committee members unanimously supported me and voted for the application to be agreed!! UPDATE ON THE OCEAN HOTEL ON SANDOWN SEAFRONT The IW Council Planning Enforcement Officer has been in contact with the Official Receiver who is handling the collapse of the Carlauren Group properties. The Receiver is handling 25 of their properties of which 3 are on the Island. The sale of Ocean Hotel is one of their first priorities, however there are 80 lease holders, several unpaid tradesman and suppliers who must be paid before the hotel can be sold. The IW Council is pressing the Receiver to make the site secure and screened 10

properly; but the Receiver has yet to acquire the funding to pay for that work. There will be a very long legal process and the Receiver cannot yet give a timescale for a satisfactory outcome. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED – LEARN TO DRIVE A BUS/COACH – GET A PCV LICENCE Would you consider learning a new skill to provide a great service to your community? The IW Community Bus Partnership (IWCBP) is always looking for new volunteers to drive our local community buses. You will be taught to drive a bus and get a Passenger Carrying Vehicle (PCV) Licence; all your training and associated costs are covered. The IWCBP currently carries around 35,000 passengers per year but we would like to extend our service. Most volunteers drive once a week, but you can do more or less, depending upon your availability. All you need is a clean car driving licence. If you are interested, please contact me. DON’T WASTE YOUR UNWANTED CLOTHES Unfortunately, we continue to see bags of unwanted clothes being left alongside Charity Bins rather than the clothes being placed within the bin. Often the charity bins may not be emptied for weeks and bags left along-side may be cleared as fly-tip and go into landfill. Unwanted clothes can be bagged separately in any colour bag except Black and placed with your recyclable rubbish bin (green) which will then be collected and properly recycled.

Monthly News Report for Shanklin. Richard 07471 471960 Jon 07973 860086 Email. priest.gilbey@live.co.uk Hopefully, residents have continued to see the ongoing progress made in the renovation of Falcon Cross Toilets to accommodate the Town’s Community Library – our contractors have started work on the insulation, wiring and internal structures.

by residents and tourists alike; and extra investment may be made restoring the Esplanade Clock, as well as working with local community groups and schools on the 75th Anniversary VE and VJ Day Commemorative events (similar to those of May 1995).

The Town Council have worked with Library Services to maximise the shelving space, as well as developing other community resources, linking with Falcon Cross Hall and the new Town Office, to ensure the provision of an integrated resource, as well as providing new services in the future.

Also included is funding, if possible, to reinstate the water fountain on the Esplanade and outside of the Crab in the Old Village – and we would like to thank Tina Derbyshire, who is retiring, for all her work, and that of her family, for the community of Shanklin.

Councillors have included additional security, given recent incidents at the location, and to protect volunteers and users in the future – this is in addition to ensuring the amenity is as futureproofed as possible; and the Town Council have initially allocated some funds for story telling in 2020. Shanklin Town Council is continuing the process of agreeing a budget for 2020 onwards, recognising the likelihood of further reductions in service provision by the Isle of Wight Council – we are planning a consultation event this month to help set priorities and shape the budget for 2020/21 and beyond. The Town Council have also planned to allocate indicative extra funding to maintain the Carnival and Regatta, as well as increase the promotion of these traditional events, which are supported

The Youth Centre is working with local groups and residents to produce an ‘anthology’ of the Town – with the project scheduled to coincide with the planned spring opening of the new community library. Shanklin Theatre hosts Michael Portillo on Saturday 1st; Comedian Jimmy Carr on Friday 7th; Count Arthur Strong on Saturday 15th; Spotlight’s All You Need Is Love on 16th; the Thriller ‘Revenge’ on 20th, 21st and 22nd; and the Fureys on 28th. Congratulations to Sandown FC, and former Shanklin VYCC, Goalkeeper Dougie Stephens who is now playing senior football on the Island for the 7th Decade – the Mayors of Shanklin and Sandown have presented Dougie with a special certificate recognising his unique achievement.

Monthly News Report for Shanklin Shanklin Football Club are looking forward to the 1/4 final of the Hampshire Cup, with a home game (at the County Ground) against the winners of the Clanfield/Whitley cup replay good luck to Manager Paul Haward and the Team.
