Sandown Report from Heather Humby - Telephone 01983 402024 E.mail heather.humby@sky.com 7, Pier Street, Sandown, PO36 8JR CHRISTMAS IN SANDOWN. Congratulations to all the shopkeepers who decorated their shop’s and windows, and made the High Street so festive. The Christmas tree at the library was donated and decorated by Sandown Town Council, and gave a welcome to the entrance of the town.
became apparent that the information required was not available on any of the suggested contact points… I obviously needed to speak to a human being! I then again waited to speak with a call centre assistant for 17 minutes (I have since been told this is a short time to wait!)
The Methodist Church Christmas Tree Festival, Bay CE Primary School Christmas Fair, and Christmas Fun Day, organised by Sandown Business Association, all added to the town’s celebration of Christmas.
During this wait, I was informed on numerous occasions, by a recorded message that I could go ‘online’ and get the information required.
I have absolutely no criticism with the Call Centre assistants, they were polite and helpful, FIRST ACT - First Act, a Theatre Group for but surely the Isle of Wight Council must people with learning difficulties, presented address the problem, for a large percentage their annual Christmas Production. Snow of Island residents are over the age of 65, and White and the 7 Gold Diggers, at Shanklin many do not have access for on-line services, Theatre. It was a most enjoyable experience, as they do not use computers, tablets or smart and is always a wonderful uplifting part of the phones, and they need to actually speak with festive season. someone who can discuss their problems, and answer questions. Sandown Report from Heather Humby BATHING WATER QUALITY - The quality of the sea water at Sandown, has now been downgraded from Excellent to Good. The reason given is because the outflow of runoff water comes through Shanklin Chine, and runs off from surrounding farmland and parks, that drain back to the sea, via the Chine Southern Water have included our seawater quality, on a list of areas to be investigated for improvement. LLOYDS BANK CLOSURE - A public meeting was held at Sandown Conservative Club, to object to the closure of Sandown’s only remaining bank. It was agreed to contact Lloyds Bank, pointing out the many difficulties that will be caused for local businesses. It was suggested that a mini bank, perhaps opening on two or three days a week, could be an alternative to complete closure. Andrew Turner MP, is to be requested to raise the matter with the appropriate minister. TWO MP’s FOR THE ISLAND? - The plans of the Boundary Commission to split the Island into two constituencies has been supported by IW Council. There will be an East/West division of the Island, with the western constituency including the town’s of Newport, Cowes and East Cowes, plus rural West Wight. The eastern constituency would take in the towns along the north east and eastern areas of the Island, including Ryde, Sandown, Shanklin and Ventnor. The changes are expected to come into force at the next general election. OUR TOWN. Every day, as I walk Charlie, my Dachshund along the beach, I never cease to realise how fortunate I am to be on this Island, and to reside in Sandown. As we enter into the new year, and as a town councillor, I am aware
that Sandown has it’s problems, but their is still so much to celebrate, above all, a friendly community, many of whom volunteer their to local organisations, and who do so much to promote our town in various ways. I am confident that there are now many positive signs, that the regeneration of Sandown is underway, and it’s future is secure, May I wish all Sandonian’s a Happy, Healthy New Year. SANDOWN LIBRARY SURGERY. May I remind you that I am available most Saturdays at Sandown Library, to help with any council related queries or problems, from 11am to noon..

Resolutions…. It’s that time of the year again, when we say goodbye to one year and welcome in another. It’s traditional to make yearly resolutions, which normally get broken before the last of the Turkey is used up and bubble and squeak is on the menu for the fourth day running. We can thank the Babylonians for this tradition as it is believed they were the first to make New Year’s resolutions and the early Christians believed the first day of the new year should be spent reflecting on past mistakes and resolving to improve oneself in the new year. My resolutions are pretty much the same year after year and the reason being is because I break them year after year. They are standard resolutions and include at least four maybe five from the list of top ten resolutions, which are lose weight, eat more healthily, exercise more, be more patient, stick to a budget, stop smoking, save money, get more organised, find a better job and to just be a better person over all. It’s good to know I am not alone in my thinking and planning and failing!!!!! Traditions go back a long way and each country has its different beliefs – take Italy for example… apparently Italians wear red underwear on New Year’s Day to bring good luck all year long. I do hope they wear clothes on top otherwise that will certainly be a sight for sore eyes. Back in ancient times it was believed that noisemaking and fireworks on New Year’s eve were thought to dispel evil spirits and bring
good luck for the forthcoming year. I’m not convinced with this but one tradition that really makes my mind boggle is that in some countries it’s good luck to eat foods like black eyed peas, ham and cabbage because it is thought they bring prosperity. If you want to have a Happy New Year, don’t eat lobster or chicken. Lobsters can move backward and chickens can scratch in reverse, so it is thought these foods could bring a reversal of fortune. Just to be safe I think I might just have a sandwich for lunch on New Year’s Day now. If you want a good New Year tip then I suggest you make sure your car is securely locked as statistics from the National Insurance Crime Bureau revealed that more vehicles are stolen on New Year’s Day than any other holiday. Does anybody know why this would be because I certainly can’t understand it? Another tradition in Colombia, Cuba and Puerto Rico is that some families stuff a large doll, which is called Mr. Old Year, with memories from the past year. They also dress him in clothes from the outgoing year. At midnight, he is set ablaze, thus burning away the bad memories. I would imagine this could be quite satisfying and a cleansing routine, to forget the past and move on to a bright future. Now where did I put that doll which I can dress in that ghastly knitted jumper I got for Christmas… Whatever your traditions are I hope you have fun doing them and good luck with your resolutions I hope you at least last until the end of January and I wish you all a Happy and Peaceful New Year. Here’s what a couple of Shantech Electrical customers have said about them:I had Rob from Shantech Electrical round for two days after we moved into our new house in Freshwater. It’s an old house and I was worried about the state of the wiring. Rob spent the couple of days he was here getting in and behind all kinds of places and up and down in the loft. The work was very thorough, there was no mess and he took the time to actually explain what he was doing and why. All in all a good professional job. (Jamie M – Freshwater)
Shantech Electrical came to put some wiring outside for lighting to go down the garden and into our summer house. The price was good, they turned up on time and left everything clean and tidy, and most importantly it all worked fine. I would highly recommend Shantech. (Louise B – Shanklin) For more information and a full list of services, see their main advert or go to their website www.shantech.co.uk or give them a call on 01983 565922 / 07951 158 510.

Monthly News Report for Shanklin. Richard 07854 083229 Jon 07964 869338 Email. priest.gilbey@live.co.uk We hope that you have had an enjoyable Christmas, and that 2017 has started well. PUBLIC MEETING Thanks again to the residents that attended the December Public Meeting, as well as contacted us with comments, questions and feedback – the Town Council greatly appreciated it, and our guests welcomed the opportunity to discuss a range of issues and concerns directly. The overwhelming show of hands supporting the proposals to invest in Falcon Cross and Tower Cottage Gardens Toilets – improving the quality of both amenities, for residents and tourists - together with the support of introducing minimal charging at those locations, has enabled the Town Council to start planning the development work for early 2017. NB The designs for both locations will be on display at Shanklin Community Library this month, and further details of both projects will be reported on regularly. Residents also raised concerns about flytipping, dog-fouling, and supported the proposals to fund, on a targeted basis, an environmental enforcement officer – the flexibility of the scheme being developed will help address some of the problems faced by the Town, without incurring unsustainable costs to our limited resources. Island Roads outlined their plans for 2017, including work at Vernon Meadow Car Park; Fran Alvarez highlighted the work of Pharmacists in Shanklin, and residents were encouraged to participate in consultations 12
on Island Health Services; the nomination of Scotscombe Allotments to become an Asset of Community Value was fully endorsed; and we were able to welcome our new Police Inspector, Sam Dunlop, to the Town, alongside our local PC Nick Massey. 2017 PROJECTS The Town Council will be taking forward the Public Conveniences projects, which will also include discussions on how to fully utilise all of the space that will be freed up by the developments – with a view to realising income to support the cost of provision, alongside a reduction in running costs and improved security. Plans to move the Town Office will be advanced, within the budget that has been allocated by the Town Council, and enabling the further development of Falcon Cross as a multi-purpose community facility. We continue to support the URC with their 175th Anniversary initiative, in particular the upgrade of the Town Clock – very much an iconic feature of the Town. The Shanklin Lift project should be coming to completion, and we hope to arrange an event to highlight the investment made in the amenity, and how it would complement the wider development of the Spa site which we have championed – the Spa site offers major regeneration opportunities which would considerably benefit the Esplanade and the Town, as well as Tourism and the Island Economy; and we met with the new General Manager of Southern Vectis who confirmed that Shanklin Steamer will be running again in 2017, and we are working with Southern Vectis to enhance the route and the service.
News Report for Shanklin continued... We have arranged meetings with senior managers of NatWest Bank to discuss their proposals to close their High Street Branch– we recognise the need for banking services to local businesses, local residents and tourists, and we will report on our meeting in a future edition. The Town Council will also continue funding for the Road Crossing Patrol, Grass Cutting, Community Library and the other community services it provides: and potential investment in Public Realm developments, such as decorative lighting, will be discussed. CONGRATULATIONS The Public Meeting also provided an opportunity to make a presentation to Pete Wilson, local resident and former student at St Blasius, on becoming Barratt Homes National Apprentice of the Year, as well as receiving Building and National Apprenticeship Awards. Shanklin Footballer, midfielder Gemma Woodford has also won the FA Women’s League Players Player of the Year – a fantastic achievement and recognition that Gemma more than deserves. Congratulations to Shanklin Cricketers Mark Ringer and Matt Lambourne on winning Hampshire League Regional 1 South Batting and Bowling Awards.
