Report from Sandown Town & County Councillor Debbie Andre. Tel 07948 757977 Email:- debbieandre4sandown@gmail.com debbieandre4sandown It’s your Council. Get involved and have your say…… I’m sure, like me, at the start of every year, you make resolutions that you wonder how long you’re going to be able to keep? Last year I resolved to try to make a difference to my community of Sandown, stood for election, got elected and am now resolved to represent my residents to the best of my ability for the remainder of this 4 year term as your town and county councillor. Whilst I’m not suggesting that you all stand for election, although some of you may consider it, there are many ways in which you can contribute and make a real difference to your community. Some decisions are made at county level and some devolve down to town councils. As both a county and town councillor, I have a good overview of the ongoing issues at both levels and am working hard to find solutions. I continue to attend full council meetings to represent you and am an active member of two policy and scrutiny committees and the adoption panel, along with many other local groups and organisations, including the Sandown Forum. So far, some of the issues that I have taken on are education provision in Sandown, parking, disabled access, road safety, neighbourhood policing, lost dogs, bus services and youth provision, to name a few! I’m grateful to all of you who have contacted me with your concerns. Please continue to contact me and urge other residents to do the same. I’m here to represent you first and foremost.
The fight to keep secondary provision in Sandown is nearly at an end and we will know the final decision soon. I will continue to support staff, parents and students at SBA and would like to thank the student council for allowing me to attend their meetings. Once the all through option is confirmed, there will be a lot of work to do to establish the new centre of educational excellence and I will be working closely with all concerned to ensure that the best possible outcomes are achieved. Please take a look at the IOW Council website: www.iwight.com You’ll find lots of useful information and also consultations which I would urge you to complete. One of the new offers that may be of interest is a kerbside garden waste collection to be introduced at the beginning of February. If you sign up before 28th January, you will get a special rate of £50 and two extra months. Please contact me if you would like any further information about your council. On a lighter note, it has been my privilege to represent you, my residents, at a number of functions including the inauguration service at Newport Minster, the Armed Forces service, Sandown Remembrance Day Parade, the “Lights of Love” service at Brighstone, and a visit from our German friends of our twinned town of Coburg. I look forward to the year ahead and am more resolved than ever to see through to fruition, those projects which I’ve been involved in to date and new projects on the horizon. I hope that 2018 will be a good year for all of us on this wonderful island that we call home.

“Helping people to lose weight is the best job in the world”, says Local Slimming Consultant Professional sleeper? Island caretaker? Wine taster? The idea of getting paid to do something we truly love is the holy grail for most of us, however, a local weight loss Consultant says she’s cracked it and all with eating real food, without ever going hungry and enjoying the support members receive from her slimming group. Julie Benson has run a Slimming World franchise for over 14 years after losing weight herself, with the Slimming World organisation and changing her life for the better. Since then, she’s made it her mission to help others transform their lives and has helped people from Shanklin lose an incredible 3440lbs or 246 stone between them in 2017. “This really is the best job in the world as far as I’m concerned,” says Julie. “Having lost weight myself I know what an enormous difference it can make to your life and so being able to help people make the change I have really is the most rewarding thing”. For more information or to join Julie’s group, pop along to Falcon Cross Hall, Falcon Cross Road, Shanklin on Tuesday at 5.30 pm or 7.30pm or call her on 07813 635202. 6

Take a trip down Memory Lane with Age UK Isle of Wight For many of us, the New Year is a time to look back, reflect on the year that has just passed, reminisce on the highs and the lows of the past 12 months, and to look to the future. However, for some, this can present more of a challenge, in particular, those with memory loss or dementia. Dementia is a progressive disorder affecting how the brain works, particularly the ability to remember, think and reason. Symptoms can include • Memory loss • Struggling to follow • ‘Fuzzy’ thoughts conversations • Disorientation • Mood / personality changes Being forgetful doesn’t necessarily point to dementia. As we get older, many of us experience the above symptoms, the causes of which can include stress, thyroid problems or vitamin deficiencies. If problems like these start to affect your daily life, or someone that you care about, make an appointment to discuss them with a GP. Age UK Isle of Wight have been supporting local, older people on the island since 1973; they run weekly Community Memory Groups around the island, with the aim of bringing together and supporting those with memory loss or dementia. Groups run at: • Brading (Wednesdays) • Freshwater (Thursdays)
• Lake (Tuesdays) • Newport (Mondays)
• Cowes (Mondays) • Ryde (Thursdays)
Groups are welcoming and friendly, and offer cognitive stimulation through a range of reminiscence and social activities, discussions and games, and, importantly, they also provide respite for a carer or loved one. What Community Memory Group members say about their groups – “Very stimulating, the groups really make us think” “A nice, friendly group, plus we get tea and biscuits!” “We all get on well and learn new things, the activities really help you try to remember, and some things really do stick” Age UK Isle of Wight’s Community Memory Groups run between 10am- 3pm, with half day options available. Costs are: full day £25.50 / half day £14.00. Lunch can be provided for £5, or members are welcome to take their own packed lunch. To learn more about Age UK Isle of Wight’s Community Memory Groups, contact Age UK Isle of Wight via the following methods: Tel: 01983 525282 | E: activity.groups@ageukiw.org.uk | W: www.ageuk.org.uk/isleofwight

Songs From My Heart by Sara Kouvaritakis
Sara Kouvaritakis was born on the Isle of Wight, and during her childhood she and her siblings enjoyed a lot of freedom. They spent many happy days playing on the beach, swimming in the sea or fishing from a little boat. In this way the sea became a part of her identity, and the movements of the waves and shifting sand have had a profound effect on her work as a musician, painter and poet. Sara studied the clarinet at the Birmingham School of Music, and she has had a lifetime affair with painting. She now lives back on the Isle of Wight.
Vackies in Trouble By John Lea
In the seaside town of Ilfracombe, many of the homes have taken in evacuee children, known locally as Vackies. They have come from the cities to escape the Blitz, but Ilfracombe too is not without its dangers. On the hill above the harbour stands the old chapel, boarded up and in ruins. It used to serve as a lighthouse, but now it is wartime and the lantern no longer burns. The path to the chapel is treacherous and overgrown. lt is definitely out of bounds, but John Lea and Murray Pierce, two of the Vackies, decide to explore...
