And that’s it. 2019 - done. Welcome to the January issue and Happy New Year to you all. I hope you all had a good Christmas and you managed to grab a little time to relax with family and friends. It’s not just a new year to celebrate but also a new decade. It’s been an amazing year for Island Magazines, we are continuing to grow and reach more islanders every month. I enjoy hearing the positive feedback from readers, advertisers and contributors. I am very lucky in that I can say, I do love my job and enjoy every minute of putting each issue together. Although January tends to be a little quieter our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section still has plenty to offer including regular community events. Take a look at page 10 to find out what’s on. I hope you all have a great January and remember to keep warm and well as I’m sure there is cold weather on the way. I look forward to catching up with you again next month.

Report from IW Councillor Ian Ward for Sandown South & Cabinet Member for Infrastructure & Transport Email: ian.ward@iow.gov.uk Telephone: 01983 403193 Mobile: 07772559093 SANDOWN REGENERATION – STILL MOVING FORWARD I am confident that Sandown will continue to move forward during 2020. We are now attracting considerable commercial investment which is the main driver for regeneration. For years we heard little but complaints etc that discouraged those thinking of investing in our town. I promote Sandown whenever possible and always encourage investors to see Sandown as ripe for investment. This year will see the completion of the Premier Inn around June/July; the continuing progress of the development at the site of the old Wight City building; the expected start of the old Pier Street toilet development and as well as the two projects below, Dinosaur Isle and Sandham Grounds Sky Nets. We still have our challenges, such as the old Ocean Hotel site etc; but Sandown is now attracting more investment than any other Island coastal town. DINOSAUR ISLE – TWO BIDDERS EMERGE The regeneration plan to make Sandown’s Dinosaur Isle Museum a more family friendly and modern experience by partnering with a company that is entertainment focused rather purely historical is moving forward. The potential partners are the 4

Winchester Science Centre and Dino Parqe which currently have sites in Germany and Portugal. Both these establishments have been visited and I’m sure would make good partners. It must be remembered that the Isle of Wight Council has guaranteed the status of our Museum to ensure it does not become a purely entertainment facility. WORK CONTINUES ON SANDOWN SOUTH’S DERELICT BUILDINGS The IW Council’s Enforcement Team are continuing to monitor the redevelopment of the building on the corner of Station Ave/Fitzroy Street, Although the owner has now engaged a developer; the enforcement team are continuing to monitor progress and are preparing the compulsory purchase case. The future of the High Street Kebab shop is also being processed by the planning department. SANDHAM GROUNDS – THE HIGH ROPE SITE WILL BE COMPLETED FOR SUMMER SEASON In the Autumn the sponsors of Sandham Grounds Adventure Park started the construction of its latest facility, the Sky Nets attraction. The steady development of the Adventure Park will attract more tourists and Island residents to Sandown; which can only be good for the town.

Report from Sandown Town & County Councillor Debbie Andre. Tel 07948 757977 Email:- debbieandre4sandown@gmail.com Facebook:- debbieandre4sandown No matter the result of the recent general election, the needs of our community here in Sandown will remain the same for some time to come. There will still be the homeless, the hungry, and the lonely in the heart of our community. Some of us will have made resolutions that we will probably already have broken. My New Year’s resolution to you all is that I will continue to work within our community, bringing people together to provide hope and support. We are so fortunate that we have many organisations in Sandown who work tirelessly and give of their time freely to help others. I am frequently reminded of those seemingly small acts of kindness that happen that have the power to change lives for the better. We have several care homes in Sandown and I would urge you to consider paying one of them a visit. There are some residents whose family may live on the mainland and they can go for weeks without any visitors. For a couple of years, I had a relative staying in a care home in Sandown and I thoroughly enjoyed my visits, getting to know other residents and listening to their stories of “the good old days”. January is also a good time for clearing out the clutter, including any unwanted Christmas presents. Why not clear some space and take your unwanted items to any of the charity shops in our town? They would love to receive your items. Don’t forget the Independent Lifeboat collection point down on the revetment. The crews are all volunteers and provide a fantastic, much needed service. They are also still fund raising for their building works to provide better facilities at their

lifeboat station. If anyone is struggling to pay bills this winter, don’t forget that you can contact the Footprint Trust on 822282 for free, impartial information about how to be warmer and save money on your winter fuel bills. They will also help you to find out if you qualify for the warmer homes discount offered by some energy suppliers to those on certain benefits. This is a confidential service. Please remember Foodbank when you’re out shopping and also any surplus food that you have after the Christmas festivities. If you’re like me, there’s always something left over in the cupboard that didn’t get eaten. Foodbank also run cookery courses called “Eat Well, Spend Less” which help people to manage on a budget and to cook delicious, healthy meals from scratch that are low cost too. Finally, I hope that you all have the opportunity to get out and about this month. We are so lucky to live in a place where a short walk can find us on rolling hills, on a stunning, sandy beach or enjoying one of the many cafes and restaurants in our town. Don’t forget Councillor Heather Humby’s councillor surgery at Sandown Library every Saturday from 11am – 12pm. I’m aware that not everyone is online and I want to be available to you to hear your concerns. In any event, please feel free to contact me using the details above, or Cllr Humby on 402024 or heatherhumby@ sandowntowncouncil.gov.uk Happy New Year Everyone!

New Town Clerk for Sandown I met up with Richard Priest recently to congratulate him on his new position of Town Clerk for Sandown Town Council and here is what he said. ‘It’s really good to be a part of Sandown’s Community again, having spent my early years in the Town – living behind the Commercial Pub and going to St John’s Infant School. My early memories are of steam trains at Sandown Railway Station; learning to fish off Sandown Pier (and collecting driftwood before the revetment was built), and catching the Bus in Beechfield Road, when it allowed 2-way traffic. I have many happy memories including sitting on the steps opposite the pier, in the 1960’s, when the Queen came to Sandown; playing on the stage at Eastern Gardens and on the miniature train nearby. In addition to my current role working with residents, Sandown Town Councillors and Viv, Jenn & all at the Broadway Centre, I hope to use my knowledge of Sandowns’ past to contribute to Sandown’s future – the Town, as part of the Bay and our Island, has a wealth of resources in the community, and by working together we can help realise the opportunities that exist. Thanks to all those that have already popped in for a chat and the kind welcoming messages – hopefully we can catch up in the days and months ahead (possibly when I’m driving No 24 community bus around Yaverland, normally on Thursdays).’

I’m sure you will all agree with me that this month’s front cover is exceptional and this is all thanks to the wonderful and talented Darren Harris who is a wildlife enthusiast with a passion for birds of prey, who sits quietly observing and learning the habits of the vast range of wildlife we have on the Island.

Darren has created an amazing portfolio of pictures which are now available to buy at Forest View Nursery in Newport. His photos show every tiny feature and detail of the subject and they come to life in front of your eyes which makes it very tempting to reach out and touch them. They make wonderful gifts for family, friends or just for yourself and every household should have a masterpiece like these adorning their walls.
