Report from Sandown Town & County Councillor Debbie Andre. Tel 07948 757977 Email:- debbieandre4sandown@gmail.com debbieandre4sandown By the time you read this, the summer season will be in full swing and the island will be showcased in all its splendour. Last year was my first full carnival season as an active member and I’m looking forward to taking part again this year. I would urge you to get involved in the many activities that are taking part in The Bay. I have been very active this month in several areas on your behalf. I’m delighted to say that I’ve been working closely with the careers department at Sandown Bay Academy and am very impressed with the events that have been planned to give experience to the Year 10 students in writing their CVs, interviewing practice and meeting with potential employers. I’m very much looking forward to being an integral part of the new school in September which promises to offer all students an excellent learning environment. I have also been involved in two working groups formed from the two Policy and Scrutiny Committees that I’m a member of. One group is looking specifically at “affordable housing” and the barriers to its provision on the island, the other looking at the service provision for “Autism Spectrum Disorders” from the initial diagnosis through to referral and management. I attended a one day conference on homelessness in London, run by the Local Government 10
Association which gave a good oversight of the various government funding schemes just launched. If you have a particular interest in either of these areas, please contact me as I would value your input. I am now also a member of the main Scrutiny Committee which meets at County Hall every month two days before the Cabinet meeting, to scrutinise and make recommendations in respect of forthcoming decisions coming to both the cabinet and full council. The forward plan is available on the council website www.iwight.com and is regularly updated. These meetings are open to the public and I would urge you to attend if there is a particular item that is of interest to you. There is an agenda item for public questions which can either be submitted in advance or asked at the meeting, details for submission are published on the agenda. There has been a lot of work going on to shape the future regeneration of Sandown and The Bay area. Plans for the future of Dinosaur Isle have come a stage further with the go ahead for the procurement process for a development partner. The accreditation of the museum will be maintained and I’m grateful to Jeremy Lockwood and his team for playing such a vital role in both protecting and promoting this fantastic facility that continued over the page
Report from Sandown Town & County Councillor Debbie Andre. could become the British Dinosaur Centre attracting worldwide interest from a wide range of potential visitors.

DENYER PLUMBING SERVICES
What you got there? The little red on this month’s front cover is a personal favourite of mine and local photographer Zoe Cox was able to get up close and personal with this little lady. Zoe has taken the time and dedication to visit her local nature reserve on an almost daily basis (in fact I wouldn’t be surprised if it was more than once some days!) and her perseverance has paid off as Zoe is now in the position where she can hand feed her and stroke her. You can obviously see from this photo how inquisitive she is and wants to know exactly what Zoe has in her hand. This shows the trust that can grow between local wildlife and humans. Zoe is a wildlife fanatic and has thousands of photos of foxes, birds of prey and her favourite of them all, red squirrels. Choosing just one picture for the front cover became a very hard task as she has managed to capture the beauty of them all. This is the second time that one of Zoe’s photos has appeared on the front cover, and last time was the amazing picture of a fox, which once again she gained the trust of, and he was happy to pose for her whilst she took pictures.
